Florida State claims to be the real DBU

Is imitation the highest form of flattery? Who wins the D-back battle in September?

yawn.... every school that has placed a DB in the NFL in past 10 year claims to be DBU.

To answer you question... With all the new starters and freshman starting on defense, I am putting a lot of money on F$U.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

FSU is replacing a lot from a squad that already played poorly and learning a new system. I know we might not be at top form but I wouldn't assume they are either.

Yeah methinks parts of this game are gonna be sloppy af. It'll just be a matter of can we have it together more than them.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Sure that's understandable but their recruiting has been better than our in recent years, so I trust their talent to be able to ready the ship faster than us. Plus its @ FSU which counts for a little.

I have heard Earl Thomas introduce himself as being from DBU and he went to Texas.

they claim Jaylen Ramsey is Deion sanders around here, so it makes sense that they would think they're DBU.

Texas and UF are the only schools with a claim other than us. FSU has had bout 3 good DBs go pro recently so they think they hot shit but they for real garbage.

I think Ohio State and LSU can also make a claim. So can FSU if we're being objective.

I think LSU claims it way more than any other school

So does Florida, Texas, and LSU.

Yeah?

LSU and Florida are the only schools that I'd say could really claim that over us. Maybe Texas and recently Ohio State has had a slew of DBs drafted. Little to early to put them up there as we'll need time to see those OSU DBs develop in the league.

I wouldn't say they have the claim over us, but only almost equivalent.

Depends on how far back you go I guess. From 00s on, I'd rank DBU LSU, Florida, VT, Texas. In the past 5-8 years, FSU, Ohio State and Alabama have seen an uptick of DBs being drafted. I'd be interested to see how many draftees, as well as compare the longevity of careers from the DBs from these 7 schools since 2000.

I guess it also depends on how you define "DBU". All of those other teams are good at a lot of things, but our biggest strength over the last 15 years has been at DB, and we're putting about as many in the NFL as these other powerhouses.

Effectively, of our greatest successes recently in terms of former players going on to have great careers in the NFL, a majority of them have been DBs. That is why I call us DBU above all the others.

From what I understand, Barnett (the new Defensive Coordinator) will shift FSU to more often playing with one more linebacker than last year, shifting to using 4 backs instead of 5 on many downs. Jimbo used a "Star" defensive back that was like a hybrid between a safety and a corner. On many plays this position will now become a fast linebacker. Think that gives up some opportunity for a few good long balls?

While enrolled at Memphis in 2007, a kid in class claimed that Memphis was the DBU. My roommate and I (both from the Roanoke area) both roared in laughter out loud in unison. We asked him to name 'all the DBs' UM had cranked out, all he could name was Mike McKenzie. Needless to say, the debate deflated from his end rather quickly. We didn't exactly provide a rebuttal school to crown DBU, but is sure as hell ain't Memphis... haha.

Whoever coined it first get's to be "DBU". Any other school who places corners and safeties in the NFL needs to get their own nickname.

The others could be "Corner College", "Safety State", The Blanketing Institute of Technology, among others.

As much as I have orange and maroon glasses on this one... I have to step back and objectively say we all need to acknowledge the true DBU:

FOSTERS: Australian for defense

True story: upon moving to east Texas two years ago, I saw a family wearing a "DBU" sweatshirt at a playground in some combination of purple and yellow. I couldn't help but mutter something along the lines of, "wrong color scheme", knowing it should be maroon and orange. I was then politely reminded it was not an acronym on football, but literally the initials to Dallas Baptist U.

Oops.

If it ain't orange, it better be maroon...and if it ain't maroon, it better be soon!

This is like when I lived in Colorado and was talking to a guy at a party who said he went to UNC...I mentioned something along the lines of Tarheels cheating and he responded asking what the hell a Tarheel was. I said, "Uh, you went to UNC... University of North Carolina?" He says, "Yea, it's actually University of Northern Colorado."

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Yeah, I lived in Colorado for a bit too. We were out with some new friends, and I was wearing a VT polo. They politely said, "whoa, we didn't know you were from Vermont." I politely responded with, "whoa, you don't get out much."

I honestly have been approached probably half a dozen times in 3 diff time zones with people thinking Vermont, not the Hokies when they see my VT. Crazy talk!

If it ain't orange, it better be maroon...and if it ain't maroon, it better be soon!

True story: when I was a little kid, I knew pretty much one thing about Hokie basketball: we were pretty bad at it.

One day I was flipping through the channels and found a basketball game between VT and UVA where UVA had a number by their initials (which I understood to mean they were good), and the VT team (wearing white, to my credit) was leading by a decent margin. I went and found my dad and told him that some team from Vermont was beating UVA, and he played into my ignorance until the end where it showed the full names of each team. My mind was blown.

You sure it wasn't UMBC?

We can be Defensive Back Institute & Safety University or DBI&SU

We could be the real PSU...Pick Six University!

would change to CBI&SU, since stating safeties is redundant with defensive backs.

Hokie Love!

we are the holder of the official bowl appearance streak.

We also put a DB into the NFL in the first round of this year's draft before FSU and then we put in another one 12 picks later. #RealDBU

Tremaine is a LB so that doesn't help us with the DBU claim.

Is a LB not a DB? It's not a CB, but it's not an offensive back.

Defensive backs (or the secondary) includes cornerbacks and safeties. Linebackers are a separate group from them as is the defensive line. The primary responsibilities of each group are very different. Tremaine was a linebacker and played the backer spot in Foster's scheme.

You may be thinking of the whip/nickel position that Foster uses which has become hybrid LB/DB position. The whip spot used to be a linebacker but in recent years has become more of a DB position due to more teams using spread offenses. This was Mook's position last year.

Uhhh, you wouldn't happen to be forgetting about that other first round pick would you?

'Cause we had two of em.

And I was incorrect for doubting. My bad. Should read more.

This is all in response to the original comment:

We also put a DB into the NFL in the first round of this year's draft before FSU and then we put in another one 12 picks later. #RealDBU

I am interpreting that as two DB's from VT being selected in the 1st round with our first DB being selected before FSU's first DB.

First round picks from VT and FSU:
Pick #16 - Tremaine Edmunds - Linebacker
Pick #17 - Derwin James - Safety
Pick #28 - Terrell Edmunds - Safety

I'm trying to point out that Tremaine is a linebacker, which is not a defensive back position. Therefore, we did not have a DB selected before FSU in the 2018 draft and did not have two DB's selected in the first round.

Thanks for the corrections. You were correct in your assumption that I assumed that LB was considered a DB. Legs for you sir.

Devil's Backbone Unlimited??

We put the K in Kwality

Starting with the 2000 Draft, and including Supplemental Drafts, 939 DBs from 186 schools have been selected.
- 32 Schools have had at least 10 drafted DBs
- 7 have had at least 20.
- 2 have had at least 25. Virginia Tech (25) and Ohio State (28)
- Virginia Tech leads with 18 of 19 years having a DB taken

Since 2009:
- 8 schools have had at least 10 DBs taken.
- The Hokies rank t-4th (13) behind Ohio State (15), LSU (15), and Alabama (17)

Since 2014, the Hokies rank 2nd (8), behind only Ohio State (9)

Fun Fact: Despite being a DB coach at both New Mexico and BYU, and being the HC at both BYU and UVA, Bronco MendenLOL hasn't had a single defensive back drafted into the NFL.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Excellent work

Non-P5 Schools you'd have a better shot at making the NFL as a DB with as opposed to UVA (6 drafted DBs since 2000):
- Louisiana (7)
- Southern Miss (7)
- Boise St (8)
- Houston (6, but have more recent success)
- San Diego State (6, same as Houston)
- San Jose State (6, same as Houston)
- UCONN (7)
- Cincinnati (9)
- UCF (8)
- USF (8)

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

As a funny follow up. Played in a member-guest golf tournament this weekend. I have a Cobra Bio Cell+ driver, in orange. And made my own headcovers, in Hokies colors. And use orange tees. We played thru a group, and got a comment about the orange. Told em it's "Hokie colors." I get a comment about UVA, and one of the guys said he went there. One of the guys we were playing with went to loluva for grad school, so I call him UVA-lite. (He never got a chance to wear a tie to a football game.) He gets up to the tee and skies one. Guy from the other group, without skipping a beat, goes "That's what Community College gets you kids!!!!!" Perfect.
