OT: Favorite Football Food

Hokie Kickoff is 2 months from today!!!!! Woooooo!!!! Football season is all about friends, food, fun, and HOKIE wins (and our favorite NFL teams). I am super excited about being in Lot 18 and hanging out with everybody!!!! In thinking about tailgating and football, I got to thinking about food. What is everybody's favorite football food and drink?

Tailgating: Turkey Legs, Smoked Chicken, Pepperoni Pizza Cheeseball, Cake Batter Cheeseball, Caramel Apple Sangria, Captain and Coke

Home: Smoker Day (ALL the smoked meats--see the addicted to Smoking Meat Thread for a full list), Taco Dip, Buffalo Dip, Smoked Chicken Wings.

These were my top favorites that I can think of right now.

For early games, these qualify as food. Bloody marys made w Olde Bay spiced vodka, zing zang bloody mary mix, bacon, feta stuffed green olives, shrimp w cocktail sauce, a shake of louisiana hot sauce, pepper, some smoked sausage on a stick, and a celery stick. Yummm!

Apparently so. Probably call them something else though. Turns out we actually have a Boston's in Jax, but it's way up by the airport.

Need you to email me a list of places to eat in the area. Especially BBQ, wings and hole in the walls. Same for anyone in JAX if you are reading this.

Fried Seafood - Safe Harbor
Clam Chowder - Beachside Seafood ($), surprisingly good philly steak sandwich too.
Oysters - The Fish Co ($7 doz on Wednesdays)
Cuban/Dominican - El Mofongo
Wings and Pizza - V Pizza
Fried Chicken - Publix grocery stores, there has to be crack in there. Hanger Bay is also good.
Steak - Marker 32 ($$)
BBQ - Mojo's
Cajun - Ragtime ($), great gumbo.
Dive Bars - Gingers (get a Rocket Bomb then get out)
Sub Sandwiches - Publix again. Great selection and really good wheat bread.

Worth checking out:
Clarks Fish Camp - Food is decent, they have exotic menu items like kangaroo and snake. Also has a ton of taxidermy displays and a live alligator.
Brucci's Pizza - $1 slice, $1 beer/wine on Thursdays
Hanger Bay - Fried Chicken and Ramen... it is an odd combo but they do both well.
Casa Marina ($) - Great all you can eat/mimosa/beer brunch for $30 on Sundays.
The Conch House - Further south in St. Augustine, but decent food and spectacular views on the water.
There are lots of local breweries as well. Intuition near the Jag's stadium, good menu of food too. The Green Room at the beach. Engine 15. River City, also has a good food menu.

Going out on a very short limb and guessing you live or work pretty close to me. You also covered a lot that I left out (figured Mayport would be too much of a hike for Fireman, so most of my spots were south of Beach.) Only spots I haven't been are Mufongo cause I hadn't heard about it, and Gingers because I have heard about it.

You two need to follow the local alumni group. A new group of officers took over and is trying to make it a better functioning group.

I liked the facebook page a while back. If I'm not on a boat, I may go to the trivia night next week.

I am off Kernan, but work at NAS. I can't recommend the pernil at El Mofongo enough. It is closer to base off Timuquana, but the pork and plantains are great.

You're not wrong about Ginger's...

Also live off Kernan. Work at Mayport. Definitely gonna hit that place up, cause Mambo's just doesn't cut it. Got spoiled when I lived in Virginia Beach cause there was a fantastic Cuban place a block away.

No question. Wife and I would saute' peppers and onions and then grill the Johnsonville Italian sausage. Eyes and noses of other tailgaters would always come our way. Also good in a non football environment.

Breakfast - tailgate egg/beef/cheese casserole - Mimosas and Bloody Marys
Lunch - Burgers/hotdogs - Beer
Dinner - more Burgers/hotdogs - more beer

After the game - whatever leftovers are available - more beer while the lots clear out

I just picked some of this stuff up for the weekend to try for the first time. I can't wait to try it. I'm generally just a Tito's and Zing Zang type of guy occasionally using cucumber vodka.

Bartender in Ocean City, MD came up with the recipe. I support this brand when I drink Bloody's. And it's pretty solid without anything added other than vodka...whatever flavor.

I'm a man! I'm 44! Hokie thru and thru.
@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

Celery salt for rimming
1 lime wedge
4 oz. Tomato Juice
2 oz. premium vodka
2 dashes Tabasco Sauce
2 tsp. prepared horseradish
2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch celery salt
1 pinch ground black pepper
1 pinch smoked paprika

Pour some celery salt onto a small plate.
Rub the juicy side of the lemon or lime wedge along the lip of a pint glass.
Roll the outer edge of the glass in celery salt until fully coated. Fill with ice and set aside.
Squeeze the lemon and lime wedges into a shaker and drop them in.
Add the remaining ingredients and fill with ice.
Shake gently and strain into the prepared glass.
Add garnishes.

Yum and I have to get that one with old bay seasoning too. Up in the Midwest it's like another meal. Last one I had was garnished with a pickle, sausage, olive, cheese, lemon, lime and cane with a beer chaser. XD some come with a chicken wing.

Proud Hokie since 2004.

Add a teaspoon of old bay to this one, or even use old bay to rim the glass. As with all bloodys, finding a good base is pretty much the entire battle - the garnishes make it fun.

Yes, there is nothing like a midwest bloody mary - I remember the ones up in Wisconsin being a meal, it's absolutely fantastic!

Good idea! you use a specific vodka or tomato juice?

VT Football: It'll get after ya!

Proud Hokie since 2004.

I've used the Bakon Vodka before - adds a neat flavor to it - with an added swirl of sriracha to spice it up. I try to avoid the cheap vodkas, Titos is a great option for not a bad price. Campbells Tomato Juice (the one in the 46oz cans) - for some reason, I think the canned juice tastes better than the plastic bottles. Probably me just having old school nostalgia with puncturing a can with two holes like it was done back in the day haha.

Not great on it's own in my opinion, but does wonders in a bloody mary.

I have a new food that is going to be coming to the Lot 18 tailgate this fall. Smoked salsa! It is amazing.

Can confirm... ^^ This is AH-MAZING!

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

Damn, that looks and sounds delicious.

It has a nice smoky flavor with good heat (you can always adjust the heat to your own preference). We are planning to try it mixed with queso too.

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

If I'm watching a game at home, I will almost always do buffalo chicken dip. I use the Franks Red Hot recipe, but I add chopped celery into it, use more buffalo sauce than they call for, and sprinkle shredded cheese on top to form a bit of a crust. And I use celery sticks instead of Tostitos to scoop it out.

If I'm at a game, I do brunch at Boudreaux's and then go make friends in the tailgate lots.

Going to have to bring this one to the tailgate... pit beef sandwiches. Damn good.

It was friggin amazing, we got a meat slicer as a wedding gift last fall and slicing thin is an important part of the equation.

When the Ballast Brewery opened we bought a kegerator. Currently have the Fathom IPA tapped, will add a Mango Even Keel at the end of the week when they rack one off for us.

I have enjoyed the Ballast brews for years before they opened up out here as my Brother lives in San Diego. Great IPAs, and I am not a sour person, but Sour Wench is amazing and if you get the chance give it a try.

I have an order in for the Mango Guava Sour Wench. Not sure when it will get made again. If you ever see it on tap, try it.

Oh man the event they had there featuring like 8 variations of Sour Wench was awesome. Mango Guava was my favorite but all of them were top notch.

Same goes for their Victory at Sea day. Their take on a Peanut Butter Porter is my favorite I've found of the variety so far.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Victory at Sea Day was amazeballs. The whiskey barrell one was on-point. And the cereal one wasn't bad either. Yes, fruity pebbles cereal. There were bits floating in the beer.

Fruity Pebbles floating in beer??!! That sounds terrible on all accounts.. Or it sounds like somebody was hungry and out of milk and didn't want to eat dry cereal....

They had like 20 different varieties of Victory at Sea. One of them they put in the keg and conditioned the beer on it. And when they poured, chunks came out. They had peanut butter, oreo cookie, peppermint, orange chocolate, mexican hot chocolate, and chai spice among others.

Your added description does not help.

And when they poured, chunks came out.

The only chunks I want in my drinks are ice and maybe some fruit...

And the visual I got for the Fruity Pebbles was some kid with a bowl of cereal using milk instead of beer.
