Bronco The Quote Machine

This has been quite an up and down week with some more good news coming today. At the end of the day it is still the offseason and we need entertainment and none other than good 'ole Bronco has provided this. This has to be tough to hear as a player on the team, a recruit, and also the donors/season ticket holders/whatever they call themselves. LOL @ uva

Sounds like he's gone off his meds or wants to get sacked.
Anyway we can bug the LOLUVA AD's office tomorrow? Im guessing he going to get an ass chewing Patton would have been proud to deliver

Tangentially related only: Hue Jackson has decided Browns players have to earn their helmet stripes in practice. I really don't know how to feel about this but it sounds like a #TotalHardThingsTogetherMove

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Not the first team do something like this in the NFL. Not sure about more recently, but Cowboys players all had to earn the star for it to be put on the side of their helmet in camp.

Well, the lack of helmet decals for the Browns certainly makes sense.

Agreed. It has been rumoured that the Brown helmet image is to be a steaming pile of poo. However, this just speculation as nobody has earned the honor to wear it yet.

I never met a project that couldn't justify a new tool.

Considering that more than half the players on his roster have been signed by him, 27/81 is pretty crappy self evaluation. Not to mention that the only "stars" on last year team were the ones that he inherited.

"I want to play the worst Power-5 team that we can play."

Well he crossed that one off the list this spring.

Here is the thing, they didn't, because Bronco said they weren't good enough to have a spring game.

You just need to do what we do and have that team as your last game of the season every year. Makes for great momentum going into the post season.

You should read the other story the same guy posted recently. The one with the statistics about NFL players. Think he'll get fired over something like that?

doubt he will get fired for making up statistics, but here is the article being referenced...

http://www.dailyprogress.com/cavalierinsider/mendenhall-doesn-t-want-players-sole-focus-to-be-nfl/article_201f4f68-6d0c-11e8-99c5-1716473989c4.html

Mendenhall listed two unverifiable statistics to discuss his reasoning for not wanting his players to solely focus on an NFL future.

"Knowing that statistically ... 85 percent of the makeup of the NFL, those young people all come, 85 percent from single-parent homes," Mendenhall said. "So that's one dynamic."

Then, Mendenhall discussed another statistic.

"The lucky ones that make it to their second contract — that means there is some sustainability — when they leave the NFL, they are all of the following — this is 78 percent, almost 80 percent," Mendenhall said. "They are divorced, bankrupt, a substance abuser and disabled, all four. That's almost 80 percent of the lucky ones that make it to their second contract."

When asked where Mendenhall got those sets of numbers, a UVa Athletics spokesman said, "No idea."

Edit: added link and relevant quote.

Based on results, I can totally see a guy just like Tommy working in the UVA football department (minus the part where he finally figures it out at the end, of course).

I'm pretty sure he's the guy with the big whistle.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used."
- The BoD

Maybe he got those numbers by taking a pseudo-class at UNC?

"Mendenhall said he's trying to "change the world" with his team. He wants to do this by cultivating a strong internal team culture that has its alumni across different communities acting in a positive way."

Ah, taking one out of the ole Butch Jones "champions of life" playbook I see. No better way to build a strong internal team culture than to vocalize that you feel less than half your team is capable of competing at the level they need to be.

Thanks! No way I could have done that from my phone in an efficient manner. Appreciate the assist.

UVA vs Rutgers 2019 neutral site game at FedEx seems pretty fitting.

Wow, would be a lot of empty seats for that one. My eyes just got bored reading both those teams names next to each other.

Just noticed UVA scheduled Liberty in November for senior day in hopes of securing a win. I wouldn't be shocked if Liberty won.

It's Time to go to Work

Nah he still said it's likely UVA makes a bowl this year.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

That man's delusional. Look at this schedule and find me 6 wins. Then look again remembering that these teams are playing LOLUVa. Every FCS team on this list has their game circled as their chance to rack up a win on paper against a P5 team. Every FBS team has the game circled as a chance to rest their starters and get their bench warmers some "meaningful" minutes.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they go 4-8 with a loss OOC (probably to Indiana?) and a random upset over an ACC team on an off week (Duke?)

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

oh, and for a laugh, I compared the ticket prices for LOLUVa's home games vs ours.
LOLUVa:
mean price - $20.42
median price - $21
max price - $28
min price - $14

Tech:
mean price - $57.71
median price - $37
max price - $176
min price - $15

they have three games at or below our lowest price. All our home games but W&M ($15) are going for more than their highest game (UNC @$28).

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Tech may not blow the doors off our schedule, but there's a legitimate chance UVA starts that season between 0-9 and 2-7. Yikes.

Richmond, Ohio, Liberty, GT (because they can actually beat them, ahem), UNC, and Indiana is not a stretch- and I hate UVA as much as the next guy.

I'd put down a boatload if money that says they don't beat GT, UNC, and Indiana. Personally I would predict them to lose at least 2 of those and all 3 wouldn't shock me.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

They haven't won at Georgia Tech since 2008.

I thought the same of last year's LOLUVA schedule. Who knew that UNC would be so horribly bad or that Duke would play so poorly or that GT ... Well they seem to have GT's number, so I can't argue that W.

Uva actually moves the ball/scores points on GT's 80th ranked defense. It's weird.

I know a guy who went to the LOLUVA spring festival, and he went to a meet & greet with Bronco, held for major contributors. He said Bronco was confident tht they could win 8 games this year. what world he lives in and what league his football team plays in, I couldn't tell you.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I can get to 7 if I'm REALLY generous. But they still have to win three conference games. And I don't think WE'RE going to beat Duke, Pitt and Georgia Tech.

I've been cutting back on the drinking.

Bronco is smoking something, I'm just not sure what. I hope they extend his contract!

he's clearly trying to under promise and over deliver, but he still reached too far.

Mmm...27 seems like a stretch when it looks like he can barely field 11 ACC caliber players.

He didn't say that the 27 could be on the field at one time. He's probably stacked deep with something like 6 ACC punters, 7 ACC kickers and 4 ACC long snappers.

Bud/Wiles 2020

Worst part about this is he apparently held this emergency "State of the Program" meeting to say all of these things unprompted. As an attempt to avoid the media "twisting his words". No, the media isn't twisting your words, Bronco, you're just goofy and say dumb shit.

So his goal is to get 85 ACC caliber players by year 5 and then start trying to win?

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

UVa: "Where you go to schedule the weakest teams to play in front of the fewest fans."

Apparently, also with the fewest ACC-caliber players.

The unfortunate truth is that saying these kinds of things might shorten his coaching career at UVa, though much of what he said is probably close to the truth.

Still more ACC-quality players than fans that they had at their spring game.

I feel like this is something you tell your wife when you get home after a bad day. If I was a hoo fan I'd kill myself I'd be pretty pissed at that comment.

“I turned down 12 other opportunities. You know what I mean?” - Fuente

I read it as a not so veiled shot at Mike London. And lowering expectations... not dumb.

This is year 3 for Bronco and his roster had been getting progressively worse each year because his recruiting sucks. If all the things that London did badly, recruiting was one of the few he did somewhat well.

This is all on Bronco, and it's been a joy to watch. I'm not kidding, that program may never recover from this.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

London wasn't as good at recruiting as it appeared.

He did (inexplicably) pull in some top talent from Virginia, but that was balanced with lower-than-average overall recruiting, similar to the guys Bronco gets.

While this is largely true, to Alum's point, that was still good to keep his recruiting classes solidly in the 25-30 range. They usually had decent skill position talent on both sides of the ball due to London's 2-3 VA blue-chip guys.

London landed those blue chip recruits by offering all the dude sthey did 7 on 7s with, regardless of talent. So that left a lot of crap on the roster when the blue chips didn't pan out due to shite coaching.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

There are proper ways to lower expectations, that was not one of them. He could have easily said "We are starting to get some of the pieces we need but we still have some gaps. It will be a few more years on the recruiting trail before we have all of the pieces we need to be competitive in this league." Doesn't call out 2/3s of his roster to the public while setting the expectation that they will not be competitive yet.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad to see things as a dumpster fire in Hooville. I just think he did a horrible job communicating.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

I think he's prepping them to not make a bowl this year.

At least that's what I'm hearing.

But they agreed to wear a loluva outfit on the football grounds. They should KNOW this already.

I'm a man! I'm 44! Hokie thru and thru.
@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

If that's a shot at Mike London, then Bronco's even dumber than we thought.

81 players on the roster. Basic math indicates that you bring in about 20 players each year. If this is Bronco's third year, he should be responsible for 60 of the players on that team. Best case scenario for him is that he's brought in all of those 27 players (45% of his recruits). Worst case scenario is that he's only brought in 7 (11%). Either way, those numbers are a bad reflection on him.

Bronco said that only 1/3 of London's recruits remain in the program -27 players. Are they the 27 ACC caliber players?

The truth is, coaches often say their teams suck. Hatin-Ass-Spurrier was famous for it. Saban even gets in a few comments every off-season about Bama not performing to expectations. When these coaches make them, the comments come off as laughable. We know they'll still field competent, successful teams.

What makes Bronco's quotes so damaging is just how true they are. Their classes under Bronco have been ranked 63rd (mostly by London), 58th, and 60th, with a grand total of zero (ZERO!) four star players. They just lost the most prolific defensive players they've had in a decade in Blanding and Kiser.

UVA hasn't been good, and they're only getting worse. All this under the fourth-highest publicly paid coach in the ACC.

Last time I registered a domain on one of those "discount" registrars, it came with so many limitations. I had no direct access to the zone file, had to pay for any subdomain beyond the first, and it was a pain to direct the domain to my own server and was incompatible with CNAME, so I couldn't really host it anywhere but a static IP or their own hosting service.

For those of you who don't know, a .com registration costs $15.50 per year, so any registrar that charges less is losing money on the deal in exchange for offering additional "services" that typically end up costing more in the long run. What this person is giving up by registering 6 different domains (all the different extensions) for only $1 I have no idea.

le sabre is hailing the audio as a chance to see that, no really, Coach BM's comments are really accurate and inspiring, not defeatist and shittily throwing CML under the bus. They were quick to grasp at any straw to make them seem less pathetic.

If you want to read a truly straw grasping reaction, head on over to STL. While there is never enough context in "tweet reporting," STL basically argues Blum sensationalized the quotes. Not really. They are direct quotes.

https://www.streakingthelawn.com/2018/6/11/17448296/virginia-football-me...

This kind of reminds me of the Bud Foster "we're imposing fines" deal. If UVA just admits this was a terrible quote, their AD says they've had a talk with BM and this isn't how we feel about our players etc, the damage is staunched and they can get on the recruiting trail trying to repair it. Instead, they double down on all of it. Only UVA......

Which also reminds me to be thankful for Whit. He's the man.

From the article: "Many of those ACC teams are a step ahead of Virginia currently."

Many? How about all but UNC?

The Cuse only has 1 commitment, so LOLUVA is ahead of them too, simply based on counts.

Not related to BM's comments, but I strolled over to le sabre and noticed that they picked up a commitment from a European D-lineman that camped with them recently. I looked him up and he's unranked by 247 and his film looks like a bunch of plays from an 8th grade scrimmage. Good size but hard to tell what they got. The funny part is one of the comments states that they hope other Europeans commit because "all of them are serious athletes and if they were American players would be 4* or maybe higher." All of them. 4* or hell, maybe higher. BM leaves no stone unturned in his search for ACC caliber players. They've solved their recruiting issues.

All Hokie FB related sites will meltdown the day an actual Frenchman commits to UVA

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

So on a related note, I was driving down to Williamsburg yesterday and was just outside of Richmond scanning the radio trying to find some tunes when I landed on the biggest homer UVA sports radio show. Guy was saying they could win at least 8 games next year because they return a lot of talent and the schedule lines up nicely for them. I was shaking my head and wondering what alternate plane of existence these morons are living in. Seriously is it stupidity or are these people just that out of touch?

first, they don't return that much talent, considering their D was propped up by Blanding, Brown, and Kiser. Second, this is the same returning talent that gave up 452 yards and 49 points to Navy AND failed to score an offensive touchdown in what was the only bowl game they've seen since 2011. This was their superbowl and they shat the bed. So yeah, go ahead and put a lot of faith in your returning talent...

Also, every team lucky enough to have LOLUVa on their schedule is thinking "man, this schedule lines up nicely for us. A guaranteed win!"
