New Bowl games on the horizon.

It figures that I leave Myrtle Beach and they make get a Bowl game.

Does that say "yay" or "gag"?

Yes, it does.

(The original line was "yay", but "gag" works just as well.)

I'm pretty sure it's Laurel.

I hear both.

Then again, I can also hear "Kevin" if I try hard enough.

Rhymes with Real.

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

at this rate all you will have to do is beat the worst power 5 team in the country and you're in. LOLUVA needs to start keeping score at the spring fling if they want to go bowling.

Is this where I come to complain about bowl games rewarding mediocrity?

Seriously though, Chicago as an ACC bowl destination? We get the best bowl destinations. Right up there with Detroit and New York 👌.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Cmon, be fair now... for allowing Notre Dame to park their Olympic sports in one of the best conferences, in exchange we -perhaps- get to hold onto the Champs Sports/Camping World bowl if ND doesn't take a higher ACC spot. I mean, what a deal that is! wow. ND has really raised the ACC bowl profile as we were told they would when we agreed to this absurd affiliation.

Before the deal, VT had never played Notre Dame.

With that deal, VT has a 1-0 record against them, and plays them at home this year.

I'm OK with it.

Since this isn't 1974, I'm still not OK with it. I'll be better with it when Swofford can parlay it into a netwwork deal even 75% of the SEC's... but don't hold your breath.

ACC bowl destinations are pretty good. New York is a great destination, as are Miami, Nashville, and Annapolis. Jacksonville, Orlando, and Charlotte aren't ideal, but they are cheap cities and easy to get to. Detriot and El Paso are the only bad ones IMO.

Let's look at other conferences:
B10 has Pasadena, Orlando, San Diego, Jacksonville, Nashville, NYC, Santa Clara, Dallas, Tampa, and Detroit
B12 has New Orleans, Orlando, Houston, Memphis, Phoenix, Dallas, Tampa
P12 has Pasadena, San Antonio, San Diego, Santa Clara, Vegas, Phoenix, El Paso
SEC has New Orleans, Orlando, Memphis, Charlotte, Nashville, Tampa, Birmingham, and Shreveport.

P12 has some great destinations, but they are inconvenient for an east coast fan base. Personally, I think our bowl destinations are way better than the B12 - Excluding New Orleans, I'd rather go to any of my top 4 ACC bowl destinations over any B12 destination. B10 Line up is pretty good, but again - three of those are in Cali and not easy to get to. As far as SEC goes, NOLA, and Nashville are fantastic destinations, but nothing else there is really exciting (though I admit, nothing other than Shreveport is that bad).

TL;DR - I don't think the ACC bowl destinations are worth complaining about. Give me a big city with good bars and restaurants, that's easy to get around, and I'm happy.

It would make complete since to pick up Chicago and get rid of El Paso. That is a trade off that I would make every single day. Not sure how Wrigley Field is going to work out but Chicago is an amazing city.

So, we just received commitments from a bunch of speedster wideouts who could be crashing into the ivy, catch after catch after catch after catch

Apparently when Northwestern played Illinois there a few years back, one endzone was a few yards shorter so they made it so that all offensive drives went the other direction. According to Wikipedia, they recently retooled the dugouts and are rotating the football field 90°, back to the orientation that the Chicago Bears used for 50 years before moving to Soldier Field.

Which brings up the question: Why isn't the bowl game at Soldier Field? 23 Dec looks good to me.

Or heck, any date after 16 Dec. Not like the Bears are going to be in the postseason this year.

The Poster Formerly Known As The Spirit Of Bernard Basham

Soldier Field probably asked for more money. Potentially significantly more money.

You forgot about Shreveport....ugh

Here's the Facebook post linked up there.

I'm guessing the number of bowl tie-ins is more "this conference can have this many bowl contracts" and not "you can only send this many teams." It's probably going to be a complete non-factor, other than a few monetary reasons on the back end.

I really like his suggestion for the G5 champs at the end of the post.

84 teams and Uva still won't get in. smh.

WAY TOO MANY BOWL GAMES.

(I'll still watch them all.)

and that's precisely why there isn't too many bowl games.

Then you're part of the problem...

Ha, relax. It's not a "problem". If you don't want to watch, you don't have to. I will choose to watch.

Those few weeks in December are some of my favorite of the year. I'm all for expanding. Hell, let 2-10 UVA into a bowl game. I'd love to see them get smacked around by some C-USA school.

Bowl games are bar conversations come to life. "What if you took the 3rd best ACC team and had them play the 4th best B1G team?" Now we know! Then there's the added benefit of it being an exhibition after the teams have had an entire season to learn plays. Flea-flicker? Yes please! D-lineman lining up in the backfield on offense? I'll take it! Bowl games bring out creativity and fun. Give me more of them.

Run out a walk on QB to toss a pass on 4th down with a lot of additional thought going into it is one of my favorite things to come from bowl seasons.

"What if you took the 3rd best ACC team and had them play the 4th best B1G team?"

Yeah, I'm OK with that one.

It's when you get down to the teams with losing records thinking they should be in a bowl that I think it has become completely ridiculous.

I'd have liked it better if they had eliminated half of them.

Go figure.

And get off his lawn, dagnabbit!

#FUENTEenFUEGO
Waho's suck
Uva swallows

Yeah, get off my lawn with that "pretend bowl".

Or at least make them label it clearly as a "pretend bowl" on all publicity.

at this point, can they just officially lower the bar to 5 wins? I mean, it won't be so much of an exception as the rule with this many bowl destinations.

the SEC has actually argued to dump the minimum 6 win thing recently. The logic of course is that 3-9 Vandy is BETTER than 6-6 Tulsa. And that all 14 SEC teams getting bowl invites does not in anyway diminish the regular season, nah.

The Pac-12 just stated that it won't allow 5 win teams from their conference to go bowling...and with more bowls, you'll probably see a LOT of G5 teams getting bids. This could result in some scintillating matchups like Bowling Green vs Texas State

Umm... there are already a ton of those kinds of games. In fact, during the 2017-18 bowl season there were 12 G5-G5 games.

Check out some of these matchups:

  • R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl: Troy 50, North Texas 30
  • Autonation Cure Bowl: Georgia State 27, Western Kentucky 17
  • Raycom Media Camellia Bowl: Middle Tennessee 35, Arkansas State 30
  • Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl: Florida Atlantic 50, Akron 3
  • Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl: Temple 28, Florida Int'l 3

BREAKING:

NCAA announces the addition of 3 new bowls for the 2034 season, bringing the total to 71 bowl games (counting the championship) for 140 slots. With only 139 FBS teams, the NCAA has announced that the two teams to make the FCS championship game will be given bowl slots. As per the 15 year custom, The University of Virginia will not receive a bid.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

"The NCAA considered allowing UVA to receive a bid, but as they had lost to #16 UMBC in the NCAA Tournament, it was decided that UVA would not be bowl-worthy."

I will go to Chicago to see #ALLCHICAGOMAROONEVERYTHING kick the living shit out of the cowards of Ann Arbor.

Now the ACC needs to dump Detroit or El Paso for Charleston.

why not both?

For comparison, if 65% of the teams made the NCAA Tournament there would be 225 teams competing.

"It's a miracle in Blacksburg, TYROD DID IT MIKEY, TYROD DID IT!"

You may be onto something there... extending the field to 192 or 256 would only add one week to the tourney anyway, why not go for it?

The NIT...Let's find the 257th best team in the country!!!
The CBI...Let's find the 289th best team in the country!!!
The CIT...Let's find the 306th best team in the country!!!
Next 24 teams...We'll make our own tournament. With Blackjack. and hookers.
and then UVA because they were banished because of a few goodest boyes.

Ehhhh.....every December, as I'm coming down off my college football regular season high, I tune in to see games against teams I don't care for in locations that I wouldn't visit. And every year, I see really happy kids who win, really let down kids who lose, proud parents in the crowd, cheerleaders and mascots.

Why would I want less of that?

It's glorious, isn't it? Bittersweet really, ...watching these bowl games trying to watch as much football as I can before the season ends.

You guys totally buried the lead, GREENVILLE NORTH CAROLINA is trying to get a bowl game organized. How perfect is that? Our series finally comes to an end with ECU and we can still make a trip to Dowdy Ficklen!

I mean why not just let everyone play one postseason game, and for the top four teams in the country, if you win you get another one.

Who even cares anymore bowls are just extra games. I really don't get all the handwringing about this.

I like more football

"with all due respect, and remember I’m sayin’ it with all due respect, that idea ain’t worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin’ it on" - Ricky Bobby

correct. from dec 25- jan 7th I can binge watch football all day and night. the one thing I would ask if they are going to add more bowl games just extend football season so its all year around. so we can do with all this off season drama!

I heard a rumor that one or two of the FCS conferences were debating moving up. That would be fun if true.

I love bowl games, best time of the year

I would love to see North Dakota State whoop up on UVA.

Pour some Beer on it

Good, the ideal goal is that every FBS team plays a seeded game at the end of the year against an opponent of broadly similar quality ideally from far away. The bowl names are just pointless labels and neat venues for a handful and work just as well for those games and a playoff of whatever size is going on for the best teams.

Its a product that can be packaged and sold and everyone at every level makes some more cash and we get one last test to see exactly how good each team is from bottom to top.

At this point, someone should just go ahead and officially create the Toilet Bowl. Bend the "rules" and invite the two teams with the worst records in FBS. Get Scrubbing Bubbles as a sponsor.

Getting Missouri University of Science and Technology to host it would be a must. My uncle used to teach there and was very proud of their ceramics engineering department. Other departments would call them toilet engineers.

More bowl games means it would be less likely that FSU doesn't bowl in the future which would give us the bowl streak outright. For that reason, we gotta win on Sept 3 to do our part to keep them from bowling this year.

Have we not learned by now that FSU is going to a bowl game every year no matter the circumstances? Pretty sure they could be suspended from playing any regular season games and would still be invited to a NY6 bowl based on the fact that they were undefeated and their defense is supposedly legit.

Yeah, they'd just get some kind of waiver.
