OT: Interesting TV to help us survive the remaining dark weeks known as Offseason

Ok Hokies it is June. Which means summer has begun (and Summer Break for some of us)! It also means we have almost survived this sad, bleak time of No Football known as the off-season. It also means 61 81 days until HOKIE FOOTBALL!!!! In order to make it through this horrible abyss, HokieEnginerd and I have been watching games from last season on YouTube and watching the replay of NFL RedZone on Sundays..

But we now have glimmers of hope. CFL is starting up. That is a reasonable facsimile of football (except for the whole 3 down thing). And it gives us a shot to see some former Hokies and other guys playing. June means that NFL training camps will be starting in a few weeks.

And for all of us 80's/ 90's kids who grew up watching Nickelodeon: They are bringing back Double Dare!!! Monday June 25 at 8:00p.m. on Nickelodeon. I plan to relive my childhood and introduce my daughter to the world of slime, questions, physical challenges, and the obstacle course.

Stay strong we can survive until September!

I love watching soccer, my kids playing this weird sport has me really interested in it. But without the US, the World Cup probably will get 0 minutes of my time.

I feel the same. No US, don't give two shits & a dump.
TO EXPOUND: I'm very glad that national interest has increased over the past decade & my fave non US teams are Roma (because the same colors as Tech) & Birmingham. But in terms of olympic & wc, no US = no interest from me.

I'm with you. I enjoy watching soccer when I know the players and have someone to root for. No U.S. likely means I won't spend a minute watching this Cup.

You know what's the best about soccer? The incessant need of anyone who doesn't follow it to religiously remind everyone how they feel it is inferior every time its brought up in a discussion.

But that is different. Baseball is truly god awful. Soccer is great.

Sorry, I got distracted by you pretending to get kicked in the shin and rolling around on the ground holding the back of your head in agony while your mates kept running 70 meters down the pitch and the ref made it clear 3 minutes ago he wasn't going to call a foul but you're still laying there. What were you saying?

This dude was whining about how boring golf was. He started it!

No, televising golf started it.

You aren't watching it right.

No joke, that is the greatest hole in golf. Having that many fans right on top of you on a Par 3 like that? I'd love to get a ticket to the Phoenix Open just to squat there for a day. Every tournament should have a hole like that, just for the atmosphere.

The Phoenix Open (Waste Management) is becoming a charicature of itself at this point.

I can see the bleachers on the 16th from my office and I don't even go anymore. Imagine 120,000 DRUNK idiots confined to the cart paths and how fun that becomes by the end of the day.

Although, I will say watching Scottsdale ladies in 6 inch heels trying to navigate the hills on the course is entertaining.

Oh good! I have a place to stay when I come out there.

I live in a sweet neighborhood right in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. All Hokies welcome to visit

Unless you have a seat in a corporate box on 16 you can forget it. The ropes drop early and most people literally run for that hole...add in limited restrooms (port-a-potties) and an open seating policy means you need to bring a crew and sit there all day long. It's nowhere near as great as it sounds, in fact, it's a gigantic clusterfoxtrot. I've been to the phoenix open five times and that hole is probably the worst place on the course. Then again I'm getting a bit cranky in my old age.

1-0 every week

Woo boy, I may have been mistaken about golf being more exciting.

I've been rewatching random games from last season that have been airing.

It does help scratch the itch though. Particularly if it's a game I don't remember the outcome.

Danny Coale Caught That Ball!!!

DVR my man. This week I rewatched two of our losses because I was desperate to watch some Hokie football.

HokieTapes on YouTube is also a lifesaver. Stream games from there every now and again. Just watched the UNC game a couple of weeks ago in fact.

Danny Coale Caught That Ball!!!

We watched WVU over Memorial Day Weekend. We have watched some others as well--Delaware because I missed that game, Duke and UNC bc they were fun...

This week I rewatched two of our losses

We've won 738 games. Why did you do that to yourself

Like to rewatch all the previous seasons games. Watching the losses when I am not half intoxicated and yelling at the TV lets me see what mistakes were made and how the game could have turned out.

If I voluntarily sat down to rewatch a loss to Georgia Tech from the previous year, I'd be more than half intoxicated by the time the game ended.

I'd rather commit Seppuku than rewatch either of the last couple GT games

I didn't have it recorded so I saved myself from that misery.

Same.

I still yell at the tv even if I know the outcome (and I don't even have to be intoxicated to any extent).

I do the same thing, much to my dog's chagrin.

Danny Coale Caught That Ball!!!

My dogs just head upstairs when I start getting rowdy during football season.

Mine have grown accustomed and sleep undisturbed with the occasional lift of the head to make sure status quo hasn't changed.

You would think my dog would be accustomed to it but not so much. Cheering is oft met with him hurtling himself at you. I have to say, his aim is impeccable. He has put me on my knees more times than I care to recall.

I'm teaching my mutts this for this season. This is fantastic.

Yeah, when we had three it was an absolute madhouse when the Hokies scored. We occasionally had to sorta calm them down some they got so excited. The ship's bell was also fun to add to the drill. I hit it the other day with my head while fooling around and our dog came running from three rooms away.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Definitely going to have to work on perfecting that this season.

I thought she was well qualified.

I got through the first three season of Flash a few weeks ago. I was excited to see season 4 finally hit Netflix, but I'm waiting for all of the Crisis on Earth-X crossover episodes to get put up. Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow are up, but Supergirl still has new episodes airing. The finale is on Monday, and the DC/CW shows hit Netflix 8 days after the finales, so I should be able to start Flash in about a week, and then be at the crossover just in time for Supergirl to be added.

I really wanted the arrowverse to keep being good, but I had to stop watching when it was clear they were just adding characters to check of various demographic boxes.

To be clear, I'm all for diversity, but you have to make the effort to write in good characters that add to the show. You can't just throw in an uninteresting sidekick who's black, gay, plays video games, and only has 3 toes on one foot and claim to be improving the show.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I stopped watching after Felicity left Arrow..this was when she got up out of the wheelchair. I've heard it's gotten good since then. I'm going to have to catch up.

I have two weeks as a bachelor while my wife and kids are away. Here's my list of what I'm planning to watch. Help me whittle it down because I don't think I can get to everything.

Silicon Valley - current season
Westworld - current season (definitely watching this)
Workaholics - last few seasons that I haven't seen yet
The Expanse - entire show
Black Mirror - current season
Atlanta - seasons 1 and 2
Barry - season 1
Hap and Leonard - entire show

If you haven't seen it, check out The Night Of.

I realize you asked for help making your list shorter and not longer. But it's only one season and we couldn't get enough. You could finish it in a day.

Of those listed, my order would be:
- Westworld
- Atlanta
- The Expanse (you'll only be able to watch the first 2 seasons)
- Black Mirror

Haven't seen but am interested in:
- Barry
- Hap and Leonard

I'm kinda' getting over Silicon Valley. It's just getting tedious now. Dinesh, Gilfoyle, and "Jared" are the only thing keeping me in.

That's pretty much my order as well.

I agree on Silicon Valley. Richard has turned into a tool and overall the show has petered but Jared and Jian Yang are keeping me in it.

Barry and the Expanse should be on your list (although you will have to stop at the end of season 2 unless you want to pay.)

Barry is a quick watch with the episodes being a half hour long and only 8 of them, I think.

Barry is really good. Not your typical Bill Hader type thing, but I like it. Stephen Root is always solid.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

If you have Amazon Prime and like spy stuff, make 6 hours and watch The Night Manager.

Wait, what?

Agree! This is a great short series......very strong acting, good twists. And Hugh Lowry I always good.

Is it better than Counterpart? That was a great show..

I'm currently watching:

-The World Cup
-Brooklyn 99
-Westworld (the rest of the current season)

Just finished season 2 of The Crown. I'm really enjoying it even though I had zero interest in the royal family prior to starting.

Some other shows I've really recently enjoyed:

-The Expanse
-The Americans
-Barry
-Patriot (highly underrated show on amazon prime)

If you like food, amazing cinematography, and/or cool personal stories watch Chefs Table on Netflix. I love food and cooking but know plenty of people who don't and still love the show.

I have been mostly catching up on all the tv that was played the last two months, because I was too busy watching the nhl playoffs every other night.

I really like the Naked and Afraid XL series.

Super excited for the premiere of Yellowstone on the Paramount Network. It's Kevin Costner's new show where he is a cattle baron out in Montana or someplace like that.

I've seen the previews of that and it looks good. Sort of like Dallas but...outside..lol

I recently started watching Black Sails.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

That was one of my favorite shows. They did not have any filler episodes. Every one was good.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

One of the most underrated shows ever I loved that show

I've been enjoying "The Americans," currently streaming through Amazon Prime. About KGB operatives living undercover as Americans just outside DC.

The final season just finished airing on FX. I really enjoyed the series and think it's one of the rare ones that remained worth watching to the very end.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Y'all are forgetting about Wimbledon. Starts in about 2 weeks. The Men's Final is going to be on July 15, same day as the World Cup Final. IDK how that scheduling is gonna work out.

Will he add another one?

IDK how that scheduling is gonna work out.

me neither, but the numbers always work

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I don't keep up with tennis too much, but the Wimbledon final is always a must watch. Kinda sappy, but the day one of my grandmas died was the same day as the 5hr long Fed-Rapha final...not to be a fucking weirdo here, but it really helped distract on an absolutely awful day.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

It's not on TV, but it's on Twitch. Overwatch League playoffs are about to start and tonight and tomorrow are the last days for matches where three teams are fighting for the last playoff position (Seoul Dynasty, Houston Outlaws, and Philadelphia Fusion). Seeing some of the pro players do random stuff that works in Overwatch is really exciting, but makes me feel inferior that I'm just a lowly diamond rank in Overwatch competitive.

New season of Voltron is out on Netflix

I don't understand the seasons for this show. I watched the first season when it came out, then didn't hear anything about it until season 5 was dropped in March. Now 3 months later, season 6 is released...

I will be watching the 1999 season on YouTube followed by roughly 3 quarters of the national championship.

Will have 1 of 3 summer Football Trailers available in the next couple weeks to help comfort the angst of no Hokie Football 👀

@VTimHokie85

Does that really make it better? Or just turn people into the Kool aid man?

Just started Peaky Blinders a few weeks ago. Almost done with season 2. If you can get past the heavy Brit/Irish accents, it's a damn good show.

Is anyone else watching Into the Badlands? It's set in an alternate future where power has been condensed to a few clans and there are no guns, so all the fighting is martial arts. It has some similar character archetypes and themes as Game of Thrones - but also uses elements from Hong Kong action films (fight scenes with wire work, use of color , etc.).

So, you end up with a pretty fun show with over the top action scenes...

Oh, and Nick Frost is in it.

I stumbled across something pretty interesting last night on the WatchESPN app. There's a tournament going on in Dubai for a sport I'd never heard of called Kabaddi. It's apparently very popular in South Asia. It's basically a full-contact game of tag on a court approximately the size of a volleyball court. You've got two teams of seven, and they take turns sending one player, called a Raider, to the other team's end to try and tag someone. Just for fun, a kick does count as a tag. After he tags someone, he has to get back to his half of the court before the defenders beat the living crap outta him. If you tag someone and return safely to your end (even getting one hand on the line while getting tackled counts as a safe return), whoever you tagged has to sit out and your team gets a point. If you get tackled, you're out and the defending team gets a point. It's certainly not as enjoyable as good ol' fashoned American football, but if you're really jonesing to see someone get tackled, it might temporarily scratch the itch until fall arrives. Look for the Kabaddi Masters Dubai on WatchESPN.

I think I found it right after Dodgeball on ESPN 8 - The Ocho.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Honestly I can't tell if this is serious but it sounds awesome and I really want to watch it.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Oh, it's serious. I watched some while in that part of the world. Damn near broke my neck with the double-take when I saw it on a TV in a bar in North Carolina last year.

Oh, fun extra detail: the raider can't inhale while he's across the line. They have to do some sort of buzz/hum/raspberry the entire time so the ref knows he's not taking a breath.

I was reading about the rules and saw that detail. Apparently, in the 'pure' form of the game, they have to repeat the word Kabaddi over and over while they're raiding to prove they're not taking a breath. In this particular tournament, though, they appear to have replaced that with a 30-second raid clock. Seems like it's a lot easier to officiate that way.

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

Just finished up S1 of Mindhunter on Netflix and would definitely recommend. Gonna start S2 of Luke Cage soon I think.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Agree, this season was excellent. I dont know if you watched the shield, but that main character kind of reminds me of "Dutch" from the Shield.

Currently watching Yellowstone and SIX...even though I've been very unimpressed with DEVGRU guys IRL.

Enjoying YS after the first two episodes, so many storylines that can develop already. Plus I loved Kevin Costners version of Wyatt Earp and he plays this character with a similar personality.

For some reason, I like going back and watching series that I may not have caught all of the first time around. Just watched the first episode of an older series last night. See if you can guess it from the first line after the series intro:

GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) on Netflix is pretty good. You don't have to be a fan of pro wrestling to enjoy it either. It's a comedy that's loosely based on the 80s wrestling promotion GLOW. The cast is pretty good with Allison Brie and Marc Maron (in a role he was born to play btw). It just started its 2nd season and each season has 10 thirty minute episodes so its an easy binge over the course of the July 4th holiday.
