A Comment on "Let's Get a Grad Transfer."

With the success of Russell Wilson and a handful of other grad transfers, there seems to be an inclination that if there is a talent gap on a team, a grad transfer serves as a quick fix.

I generally disagree.

1) A player usually is a grad transfer because he hasn't been good enough to earn playing time at his original school.

2) Football is incredibly specialized and unique schematically team to team. Unless you are targeting a player who played in a similar system, you are getting a more physically mature freshman. If they can't enroll in the spring, the likelihood of getting a decent contributor is limited. More likely, you will hopefully get a solid role player like a James Clark.

3) I admittedly do not get to watch as much non-ACC football, but I can't name an impact graduate transfer at defensive tackle or corner since grad transfers came in vogue. UVA got a graduate transfer from UVA for their OL last year, and he was atrocious. Quarterback is the only position where I can recall a grad transfer making a big impact. Please comment if you know other examples!

Hopefully some young players and some guys who have been labeled deadwood step up. I just don't see a grad transfer as a solution.
