Five questions: What's next for the Canes after quiet trade deadline?

The NCAA really needs to look into this....I knew the Miami program was dirty, but they are really pushing it here....

You're already an Eagles fan, come join us and root for the Flyers. It's marginally less stressful. Maybe. I don't know... it's pretty rough actually. Never mind

Don't get me wrong I still follow the Flyers, but the Canes literally are my hometown team having grown up in Raleigh. That said, Lindros was my favorite player as a kid (still is... The only thing that could stop him was a headshot. If he played today he'd be the unquestioned star of the league, as the hits that ended his career have been legislated out)

Lindros is an evil word in my household. As a Rangers fan, he was the absolute enemy when I was a kid. He, by all accounts, was a good guy when he was a Ranger so I don't hold him in the same contempt as UncleDaddy Brodeur. But as a teen/freshman year of college, there is no sports figure I had more contempt for.

Yeah, I'm barely old enough to remember the cup. Being out of market was hard to keep following them, and then went to the first game after the lockout in MSG (I hate you for missing that soft OT goal Weekes) and have just been in on everything since. It's a roller coaster, but I think Gorton has put us in a good position to revamp and refresh. It's nice to know that he's not gonna go all Slats and sign the next Bobby Holik (I hope) and hope that's the answer.

I followed from SWVA. I didn't have cable, but I could pick up WFAN at night on my boombox radio. I would listen to the Rangers and the Knicks, and then Steve Sommers, Ferrell on the Bench (the inspiration for the name of my column here, plus I was a scrub), and Joe Beningo on the overnight. When I could go to a friends house who had cable, I got to see the game. I also had friends record some of those games on VHS (Game 4 vs the Islanders, Game 7 vs the Nucks are still in a box at my parents.)

The next year Fox got the TV contract, so I got to see the weekend Fox games (FOXBOT/PUCKTRACKER.) Gary Thorne was so much better than Doc Emmrick. I got ESPN coverage when I went to EHC in 96, which was the Gretzky/Messier trip to the conference finals. And then, as soon as the Whalers moved to Greensboro where I could drive over and watch my beloved team, they went into the shitter. First, Messier bailed. Neil Smith offered the max deal to Sakic and Colorado matched. They took Pat Lafontaine as a back up plan and they were ok until he got his head scrambled for the last time. And then, they were awful with Gretzky skating with the likes of Kevin "Cokehead" Stevens, John McClean, Brent Fedyk, and other dregs of hockey. And don't get me started on Matt Johnson's sucker punch on Beukeboom, trading Mike Knuble for Rob Dimiao, or the atrocity that was Kevin Hatcher in a Rangers jersey.

Gary Thorne was so much better than Doc Emmrick.

smh at that weak take, must be your loud-and-proud Rangers bias showing through. Doc Emrick is the best hockey play-by-play guy of all time.

Chem PhD '16

I gotta agree that Gary Thorne is better. I do like Doc, aside from when he's commentating on Pittsburgh games, but Gary has more of a stoic type of voice and definitely was more enjoyable to listen to. He is less hectic about his commentating and doesn't feel the need to fill every single second of airtime with every synonym in the thesaurus.

Doc is the best because his style is entirely unique. Nobody can do what he does.

Chem PhD '16

I thought Thorne added gravitas. Emrick wasn't awful compared to some, but Thorne added a seriousness and importance to the game while Emrick reaches into the hyperbole pot. Plus, Doc had to work with Pierre McGuire, who drags Everyone on the broadcast down with him.

Jim Hughson is also excellent.

The Howie Rose call of Matteau's game winner is one of the greatest things I have heard in my life. It seems like yesterday.

That was great, but my memory from his call was listening to Steve Sommers repeat it over and over on WFAN after the post game concluded.

Gary Thorne did the live call for me down in SWVA.

I spent many school nights listening to the FAN for Knicks and Rangers games growing up in CT. We had MSG but I was not allowed to watch TV on school nights.

Earlier this season was rough with a 10 game losing streak to begin the season, but their first in the Metro Division with a 10 game winning streak a month ago and looking for a 7th straight win. I think Hextall is a good GM and still giving Hakstol time to see what he can do to get into the playoffs and how far. What's holding back the Flyers is not having a true #1 goalie now and in the future.

Mind sharing your rankings? I haven't been to that many myself but would like to start going to some away games for either the Flyers/Knights.

My rankings:
Preds
Flyers (bias probably)
Rangers
Blackhawks
Capitals
Islanders (Barclays)

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

1) Hurricanes
2) MSG/Rangers (terrible building great energy)
3) Bell Centre (Habs)
4) United Center (Blackhawks)
5) Nationwide Arena (Preds)
6) TD Garden (Bruins)
7) Verizon Center (Caps)
8) Columbus (can't remember the arena)
9) Phillips Arena (Atlanta Thrashers)

I have been to Hartford's arena but it was after it was converted for minor league hockey. I have heard that Barclays is horrible.

Went to high school in the city. We used to walk to the Verizon Center at lunch and get $10 nosebleed seats or $25 in the lower bowl... I'd kill for that deal again.

A agree in part with your assessment with the Canes venue. It's a great hockey venue, the atmosphere surrounding the event is a bit like southern college football. But in the end, most Canes fans are NCSU fans which means you get pretty much the same thing from them... They are fickle at best.

If the Canes are bad, the arena is half full most nights (at least in my experience). And if the Canes are good, the fans are impossible to be around.

Is it football season yet?

And if the Canes are good, the fans are impossible to be around.

As a Canes fan from the beginning (went to greensboro to watch them play 97-99) there is a good reason for this. When Raleigh got the team everyone (NHL) shit on us saying Raleigh didn't deserve a Major League Franchise, Raleigh was too southern for hockey etc, Hockey didn't belong here...we heard it all. And from roughly 98-2006 we were in the play-offs an OK amount and if not were finishing pretty close to it. Having won the stanley cup in 2006 and lost the cup in 2002 was justification that hockey could survive and thrive in the triangle.

If the Canes are bad, the arena is half full most nights (at least in my experience)

And that segues to my next point very nicely. Rutherford destroyed the franchise before leaving. Extremely expensive, back loaded contracts decimated the team from 08 onwards. Cam Ward's deal was ridiculous and his performances did not warrant it bar the stanley cup run. Ron Francis has just about cleared us of all that debt but we are going on about 10 years without a play-off appearance and that wears on the fan base. The first 10 seasons in raleigh we were in the play-offs about 50% of the time. Next ten seasons? Nothing and it's largely due to terrible contract structure.

Canes are on the up, but it is a patient and slow thing that Francis is trying to build. I will also say 82 games is entirely too much. Mid-season games are the worst due to fatigue and play-offs are still a long way off. I think NHL should reduce games, but money talks.

Oh you don't want to get me started on them... but since you went there

The more time goes by, the less I am apt to blame Rutherford for how bad things got and am now putting Peter Karmanos squarely in the crosshairs. That man is one of the biggest cheapasses I've ever seen in sports ownership. One of the things that came out after the team was bought was how the players are relieved to have such things as being able to have equipment ordered for them is no longer a worry. Yeah, the players had to worry on a weekly basis whether or not the team would be able to supply the equipment needed to do their job. And this was at the highest level of the game. Its no wonder no Free Agent ever wanted to sign here, and why we couldn't retain talent. I'd want to bail, too.

The biggest problem the team has is that management was never really willing to do what was necessary to legitimately rebuild. 8 years into a playoff drought and they still don't have a legitimate superstar. The NHL's longest ever playoff drought is 10 years, so its a testament to just how incredibly poorly the franchise has been run to have this long of a drought with no elite players to show for it. Never good enough to compete, never allowed to be bad enough to legitimate rebuild.

Another thing that hasn't helped at all was that Karmanos was openly antagonistic towards our fans the last few years. Hell, in the press conference when he sold the team he outright said the reason the team is struggling is because the fans don't buy tickets. Nevermind the fact that ticket prices have tripled, parking prices have quadrupled, and concessions have doubled since the playoff drought began, with most of the price hikes coming in the last few years. He was unwilling to pay to put a quality team on the ice, and then rips into the region when nobody shows up. Asshole

Anyway, glad he sold the team and Tom Dundon (Texas billionaire who got rich by being Santander's US CEO and then turning around and investing in Top Golf). He's already working on major renovations to the PNC Arena (I've heard the reno they talked about a couple years is back on....

Which includes a rooftop outdoor bar for "tailgating", and he's looking to also bundle in a "blueline to blueline" video screen. He's also looking to have a separate warm-up area for the team to have to bring it up to the NHL's standards, as well as building the best training facilities that money can buy. He's dedicated towards turning the franchise into a legitimate destination for free agents and fans, which is a complete change from the Karmanos era.

As for the fans... Yeah... When the team is good we're tough to be around. But then again, if you've been hounded every time you're mentioned over 20 years about how you don't deserve to be a fan and how the sport was so much better when you weren't involved and the team was in the North, you'd be a little pissed off, too.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

All very good points. I will admit the contract saga really soured my interest in the team and the sky rocketing prices of tickets and parking have all but barred me from attending games. (Recent college grad, wife, two kids, school loans, house payments etc). Karmanos is key more than rutherford based on your info.

Also would love to see that renovation take place. I also heard speculation that they may try to move the team to downtown raleigh somewhere and let the wolfpack take over PNC fully while allowing it to be used for ACC/NCAA tournament and concert venue.

Honestly not sure how raleigh would realistically support two 18,000+ seat arenas but I doubt that is happening.

PNC Arena is too big for NCSU basketball. If the Canes do leave for downtown (which... we would need some public transportation before that happens.... I can't imagine Glenwood South (that's where they were targeting the MLS stadium, and likely the same area an NHL arena would appear) during rush hour while people are trying to come in for a hockey game. Traffic would be an absolute nightmare.) then I suspect you'd see a renovation of the PNC Arena much like they just did with Reynolds, where they just lop off half of it for another purpose

Realistically, State doesn't need an arena that sits more than 12k-14k fans.

I didn't know tickets had gotten so expensive. Back around 2011-2012 it was cheaper for me to come down from DC, stay in the Comfort Suites, and sit at ice level than it was to sit in the nosebleeds and take metro to a Caps game.

I miss those Greensboro games. The student tickets were tremendous for a kid who, before hand, was 6+ hours from any NHL market.

Of all the NHL rinks I've been to, by far the best atmosphere is the Bell Centre in Montreal. The stadium was built exclusively for hockey, and the nose bleeds are so steep that each row has it's own metal railing so you don't fall forward.

I went for a Bruins vs. Montreal game while I lived in Northern Vermont. Those two fan-bases truly hate each other, and the entire place is electric from start to finish. Highly suggest it if you can stomach the cold up north.

That's the way upper bowls should be constructed. And the way I thought DC's phone booth (whatever communications name it is today...) would have been built given the confines of the streets.

We went last year on Super Bowl Sunday. My buddy was tapped on the shoulder by the guy behind us and told he needed to sit back in his seat. He was too far forward. Wut?! With a steeper pitch, that wouldn't be a problem and he (and I) can sit how we feel comfortable.

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

I'm no engineer, but I always figured the incline for other sports & concerts would override the ideal NHL incline. Hence why you see some of the older NHL barns and those that aren't used for other sports (Joe Louis Arena, etc.) have such steep nose bleeds.

I love MSG, but the upper deck is a killer. I have to sit in the 200's (which cost a fortune) because the blueseats are terrible.

Tailgating at Game 4 of the 2002 Stanley Cup is one of my all time favorite sporting experiences even though the game went poorly for the Hurricanes. And I was too intoxicated to stop/trip the Red Wings fan running down the lower level steps past my seat to throw an octopus on our home ice. But thankfully sober enough not to tackle him on his way back up.

We got there way early, brought the grill, and enjoyed the warm afternoon in Raleigh with steaks and cold adult beverages while the out-of-towners gave us odd looks when they went in early to buy overpriced beer and popcorn. Fools. Bojangles has it right - #TailgateEverything.

Be patient.

Aho will be a star. Good, young D lines. Just need a true #1 net minder. If Darling kept up his play like he did in Chicago, we would be sitting pretty right now.

It would help but they still need a true scorer. I think they have a total of 1 goal scored from the center position since January... And that goal came on the PP when the player was acting as a winger.

Derek Ryan has no business wearing an NHL jersey. And he's been on the ice the last 2 OT losses.

Peters needs a entirely new 3v3 strategy - we can both agree on that.

I was hoping to add a scorer (esp. a C) at the deadline, but the prices were outrageous (just like the article says lol).

The good news is that Spooner and Namestinkov have been awesome. The bad news is that they are both RFAs so that cap hit keeps going up.

Namestnikov has been fantastic to watch on both sides of the puck. (He WaS oNlY gOoD bEcAuSe Of HiS lIneMaTeS) Spooner has been incredible on offense. The good news is the Rangers have shed a decent amount of cap and Namestnikov probably gets whatever Miller would've gotten anyway. McD is off the books, so while it wasn't a big hit at 4.5ish, it's mostly being replaced by kids who will be on cheaper deals.

We can send some coffee, timbits, and a 6th and Melnyk might take it so he doesn't have to pay for breakfast.

Fun Tmbits story:

I was working the AHL all-star game in 2017 (not the one saved by Michael Scarn) and there's a Tim Hortons attached to the arena in Allentown. I went down to get my usual black coffee and a sausage egg and cheese on a biscuit. AJ Greer who is a 6'3" LW on the Rampage (Avs farm system) at the time got in line behind me with his (probably) girlfriend. After I ordered, he steps to the counter and orders 2 timbits to split with his gf. TWO! One glazed and one chocolate. For those who don't know, timbits are donut holes, and small ones at that. He then sat down at a table, cut them each and half and ate them. I have never seen anyone order a smaller amount of food.

recently moved to raleigh, like the canes (casual second team behind the caps) and hope they can make the playoffs and start to soon to bring (back?) some home energy to the games.

i feel like a top 3 three pick would take them from mediocre to wild card level next season. they got a new owner recently right?

We just got the #2 pick in the draft. The #1 prospect is defense, which we are loaded at, so this is a really good consolation. Considering they had the 11th beat odds in the lottery, this is a huge jump and a big moment for the franchise. Outside of sucking at goalie, our biggest problem is a lack of scoring and this should immediately solve it. Huge night for the franchise to jump 9 spots and be able to pick the best player at their biggest need.

If you are a canes fan, tonights surprise should excite the hell out of you.

didn't they just sign a big FA goalie last year or something? but it's good to hear they're going to add young, exciting talent

You're thinking of Scott Darling.

He was historically bad in goal this year. Historically bad. The thinking going into the draft was to possibly tank next year for a pick but now? A legit average goalie could have them contending for playoff positioning immediately.
