So your saying a DC sports team did something in the playoffs?

I am not Canadian or a DC sports fan but I have to say the Junkies got me fired up this morning. You would think they won the lottery or something!

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Really setting the bar high for an Off Topic Fam Thread, huh?

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

I've been a DC sports fan my whole life.

I was born in 1991.

It's literally been all downhill from there for my whole life. This is a big deal to us.

#thingsiblamethemvsfor

At least win a trophy before going with the OT FAM. If you end up losing to Tampa, the hurt is still going to be the same in the end.

Right, we can't be happy about this, sorry.

I shouldn't be surprised about hearing this from the guy that was a long standing Panthers fan, until suddenly this year he's the biggest Eagles fan on this site, and has been his whole life.

I'm sure this will end well.

Chill out, dude. Let the man enjoy it.

Yeah i agree. When the Eagles won the Superbowl alot of us let yall have fun with it so let some DC fans have some fun that they finally exercise some of their demons

What if i take my life today? Its not like anyone cares anyway

If I wasn't a huge DC, I then I would agree with you but because you aren't you really don't know how bad and unlucky DC sports and fans have been. Before yesterday, being 0-13 to just make the conference finals, let alone win one since 1998.

If you want to be the party police, fine, that's your prerogative... but you have no idea what this means for DC fans who really have invested their time, money, and emotions even if this is just a trip to the conference finals.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

No, it will not hurt the same. For a Caps fan, beating the Penguins in the playoffs is like UVa beating the Hokies in football. Sure you've heard rumors that it's happened at some time in the foggy depths of history, but you sure as hell can't remember the last time it happened, despite having the opportunity seemingly every year.

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

You left something out. "For a Caps fan, beating the Penguins in the playoffs is like UVa beating the Hokies in football and still being 1-11. I agree with Alum07, Caps haven't won anything yet, act like you've been there. Win the division, actually make it too the finals, then pat yourself on the back. Don't act like a wahoo.

It's not like the town was destroyed or there were riots or cars overturned. A little comment here and there with exuberance...

Caps haven't won anything yet, act like you've been there.

When you accomplish something that you haven't in 20 years people tend to get excited. It's called being a fan. If that angers you I don't know what to tell you. See you next year!

“I turned down 12 other opportunities. You know what I mean?” - Fuente

I guess I forget that for a lot of yall on here, 20 yrs is a long time, probably your whole lives.

What does bother me is all of the "caps fans" that come out of the woodwork every time the caps do something good but couldn't name 3 players or tell you what hooking and slashing were.

Sorry, that's my get off my lawn moment for the day.

Haha no problem. I definitely understand the fair weather DC fan frustration. They are also the ones that make the playoff tickets so damn expensive.

“I turned down 12 other opportunities. You know what I mean?” - Fuente

I mean you could say that about Pittsburgh Penguins fans or any other sport team. Lots of the people and friends I know who are Penguins fans weren't fans until Malkin/Crosby were there. Before Crosby and Malkin, Pittsburgh couldn't even fill their stadium to the point where they were 2 feet out the door to Kansas City before Lemieux saved their ass.

Point being, I agree Capitals have a lot of bandwagon fans but so does every other fan base, especially when playoffs come around.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I assure you, we don't have bandwagon Canes fans down here in Raleigh. You have to be fully vested to follow this clown and pony show at this point.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

lol well I appreciate the honesty. I have only been to a Canes game once in Raleigh and the stadium was barely half full, but that year they were still pretty bad.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I have only been to a Canes game once in Raleigh and the stadium was barely half full, but that year they were still pretty bad.

I mean you could literally have been referring to any home game the last 5-6 years.

9 years and counting since the last playoff game. One more and its a league record! Though, we did hit the f'n lottery this year and have the #2 pick, so maybe things might be looking up down the line.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Maybe also forgot that less than 15 years ago the Pens had 1 sell out at home the entire year, with 8 the year before and 12 the year following.

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

I think you're missing my point. Nobody in the Caps fanbase is treating this like they won the Stanley Cup, but the Penguins have been a gigantic thorn in the Caps' side for the last 20 years or more. I did some digging and figured out that Washington has made the playoffs 27 times in their history prior to this year. Against any team in the league that does not eat shitt, we won 15 series and lost 18. Against the Pens, we won 1 series and lost 9. We haven't reached the goal line, but we cleared a major hurdle and spat in the eye of our most hated rival in the process. So, yes, as a Caps fan, I'll celebrate the heck out of this series and worry about Tampa and (hopefully) the Western Conference champ when those series arrive.

You left something out. "For a Caps fan, beating the Penguins in the playoffs is like UVa beating the Hokies in football and still being 1-11.

And a sizable portion of the fanbase would be pretty happy with a 1-11 year that included beating the Hokies and eliminating us from either bowl or playoff contention, don't you think?

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

act like you've been there.

Well, they haven't. That's kind of the point. It's a decent sized monkey they just got off their backs, don't be salty that they're happy about it.

You've got a point that they shouldn't think they're done, but c'mon. Even the "Go 1-0" mantra allows folks to savor a win for 24 hours.

I will defend Alum here. Beating Pittsburgh and getting to a conference final is huge culturally. However, this is hockey. The hockey gods frown upon things like celebrating anything less than a championship.

I will give an example of this karma playing out- VT vs Boise. Hokies got a huge stop late in the fourth quarter. Two first downs will win the game. Darren Evans I believe had a good first down run and fumbled. Fortunately he recovered his own fumble. The VT fans in my section started an "OVER-RATED" chant. VT gets stopped, Boise comes down and scores the game winner.

Don't tempt the sports gods. It can only result in tragedy. I have taken that lesson so far that I angrily screamed at my TV when Donovan Riley ran into the endzone instead of getting down at the end of the Ohio State game. Why? Because tOSU got the ball back and bad things happen, versus getting down and taking a knee so they couldn't do anything to stop the clock. I am that jaded.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I often feel the same way because as sports fans we like to think you have more control over the outcome than we truly do. However there's a massive difference between players on the field doing something that reduces the odds of winning (Riley's INT return) and the actions of people who aren't playing the game. By logical extension of that thought, Caps fans have angered the sports gods more than Pittsburgh fans- but then why have the Pirates been so miserable?

I do agree there is significant mental aspect to sports, which is probably why the Penguins kept beating the Caps, LeBron keeps winning the Eastern Conference, and VT football keeps beating UVA. It's also possible that the reaction you see from fans could reflect the attitude of players and if the Caps are happy about just getting to the conference finals, it will most likely reduce their chances of winning against the Lightning. So while I understand the superstitious nature of sports, self-importance is what's driving the feeling that an overrated chant in the stands or not eating 6 hot wings in the 1st half and then 6 BBQ wings in the 2nd causes a ripple effect that influences the outcome on the field.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

You lost me at the "hockey gods" references. You and I and everybody else knows that just loser talk for when good or bad luck/bounces happen. No one is going to change the game outside the actual players on the ice.

I don't know if you have any connection or fandom of DC sports, but this whole thread and excitement from fans isn't just stemming from the Caps finally making the conference finals... It's also ANY team from the major sports making it to a conference finals in over 20 years. I am not ignorant to say no other teams have back luck but as posted before, there really aren't any other sport city's who have had it worst in the playoffs than DC when it comes to making it to the conference finals, let alone winning one.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I agree. I celebrated the hell out of the overtime goal (seriously haven't jumped around my living room that much since "Tyrod did it, Mikey!"--I was on a flight during anOSU). But as much as I want to troll my Pens fan coworker, I know that'll be what causes the Caps to be swept in the next round. So I'll shut up and gear up for the Lightning. Go Caps!

Don't be sorry for Pens fans. They could lose for the next 50 years and not be worth a solo on the world's smallest violin. To all you Caps fans, I'm glad this finally happened for yas.

A DC sports team in their league's final four. I almost expect us to be disqualified somehow. It's unreal.

Just an FYI Caps fans, Tampa is legit and will probably win in 5. Glad you beat the Pens tho.

lol I mean I think every fan (Caps or not) knows Tampa is good.

I am not going to make a prediction because anything can happen in hockey but I think Caps could win. Now will they? Nobody knows, time will tell.

Tampa did win in 5.... game 5 that is!

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I don't know if it makes me a bad fan but I really wasn't that upset we lost last night. The last 2 years were fun but I don't think any reasonable person thought winning 3 in a row was going to happen (I didn't even think winning 2 in a row was going to happen).

Great win...but Tampa will be a tougher out than the Pens. They look practically unbeatable. Hopefully the Caps don't think they've won the cup already, since this was a HUGE mental hurdle they overcame. Eyes on the prize, boys.

I am sitting over here, looking at the Rangers with three first round picks like

Even with the 94 Cup, the Rangers haven't drafted a star centerman since the early 60s. Meanwhile the Penguins had three of the best gift wrapped for them. It is our turn.

That was a good article but in all honesty it doesn't represent how I feel as a Pens fan. After two cup runs much of our team has been shipped out of town due to cap issues and free agency. This year every time I looked at our roster I wondered if I had accidentally clicked on our AHL affiliate's roster. Depth has become a serious issue because of this.

And because of this, the expectation for a third cup simply was not there. I told a lot of people before the series started that the Caps would win this one.

In my house nothing is bigger than Pens hockey, but when that puck slipped in and the series ended, there was no anger and barely any pain. We flipped the tv over to the xbox and played a game. We talked about how much heart these young pens kids had, and we talked about how good the Caps looked.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that despite what that article wants me to feel, I just don't have that hatred for the Caps that I once had. It just isn't there in this situation.

This^^^^. My thoughts exactly. There have been some missing parts all year, and some liabilities on the ice at times.

I don't care about the caps or Hockey really, but I hate Pittsburgh sports teams. Still yet to meet a Steelers fan who ever lived in the greater Pittsburgh area.

Twitter me

That's because Western PA'ers never leave Western PA!

Winchester is actually a huge Pittsburgh sports hub. Heinz Ward was the Grand Marshall at the Apple Blossom Festival last year, I believe.

I get why Pens fans or even fans of any team in the NHL but the Caps might deem this thread unnecessary given the fact that it was merely a quarterfinals win, and Caps fans (myself included) are very excited. The simple fact of the matter is that we haven't seen our team make it to the conference finals in 20 years. I wasn't even a year old the last time it happened. Also, it was against our biggest rival. You couple those two things and it makes for a very excited fan base.

Compare it to VT beating WVU at FedEx last September. You can compare the second round curse for the Caps to the FedEx curse for the Hokies. You can compare the Caps-Pens rivalry to the VT-WVU rivalry. I began going to VT games pretty regularly in 2006. I'm sure our fan base was more energetic after some wins back in the Big East days (namely Miami in 2003) than they were that night at FedEx after the WVU game, but for me, that was the most riled up I had ever seen our fan base after a win in person. At the end of the day, though, we were just 1-0, and we didn't really know how good WVU actually was (7-6 as it turns out), but we celebrated that game pretty hard.

My point is, you celebrate rare occasion wins and you celebrate rivalry wins. The Caps had a rare occasion and rivalry win last night, so we are celebrating pretty hard.

I have not been a lifelong Caps fan. My fandom started in the Ovie Era. I don't have season tickets, and I don't watch every game on TV. I watched most of the playoff games this season, but not all of them.

Also, a large number of people who subscribe to this site live in the DMV and are Caps fans. After the win, the next day, the first thing I did was come to this site to share in the excitement. So here's what I'll tell you:

1. Quit being a-holes about me and other Capitals fans celebrating. You don't have to celebrate with us, but for heavens sake, you can't let a fellow hokie enjoy themselves?
2. If you're a penguins fan, I'm pretty sure your playoff and cup record speaks for itself. Your team has NOTHING to prove, so please refer to number 1
3. If you don't care about hockey at all, why are you opening a thread about hockey? There's no recruiting or game film analysis hidden here

So as a Caps fan, I'm ecstatic about seeing what comes next.

To anyone who has so much free time that they have nothing better to do than trample on my parade, I say:

I admit I don't watch hockey, but what exactly is the ref's purpose here? At what point are fights broken up?

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

When they go to the ice. At that point one might have a HUGE advantage, and that's when guys get really hurt easily. I wouldn't step in between guys swinging either, but once they go down, the refs hop in and separate.

I'm a man! I'm 44! Hokie thru and thru.
@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

The ref is there to break up the fight once it is "over" and the point has been made or to prevent any serious injury and keep it from going too far. Kind of like a boxing or MMA ref stepping in when it is clearly over.

They let the players self-moderate, kind of like the comment section here, when someone does something that goes a bit too far. They also let them get the fight out of their system so the chippiness doesn't keep going.

This was glorious....I can't remember a real fight in a Game 7 (in any series). This Caps team is different than all the others.
