Report: Hokies to Play Tentative 12th Game Against Marshall

Virginia Tech will play Marshall on Dec. 1 at Lane Stadium, if the Hokies split their two remaining games, a source confirmed Saturday morning.

I bet it'll be the biggest payout we've ever made. We continue the UVA streak and maybe fans will come. Never seen an if we need it game before. I think we likely need the week of practice either way.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I would doubt it as they will likely have to sell tickets for much cheaper than normal. I think it will be tough to get $50+ for these tickets if the secondary market for the last couple game is any indication. I literally have 4 tickets to the game today that I could not even give away for free.

EDIT: Another thought is that possibly Whit could have promised them future games against VT. Marshall and ECU are pretty interchangeable to me so why not schedule the program that has a competent athletic department willing to work with us?

Unless it's more than 1.4m, we'll probably pay $500k plus an agreement for a future series, since Marshall has an insurance policy that pays $1.4m minus whatever we pay them.

And if we lose both games?

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

Then the season is mercifully over!!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

I laugh to keep from crying...

What a sad state of affairs for hokie football, If there are any two teams I want us to beat any season is Miami and UVA. Both teams are capable of beating us, but for different reasons if you punch either of them in mouth early they quit. But if we allow them to stay in the games then we're in trouble. We give up big plays too easily to allow a team to stay close.

Fugazy

I'd like to see us play committed, rather than tentative.

More Hokie football is a good thing. Every snap these young guys get will make them better.

Yeah idk. I think I'd prefer to just win the next two games and not have to play Marshall. I think getting the extra practices for a bowl game would be a great thing but, at this point, the fewer games we have to play for those extra practices, the better

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

I look at it as every game is probably going to result in one or more injuries. The real goal is the bowl game because we can get all that extra practice time.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

StubHub has a ton of tickets for the game today at $8 a pop. $20 for East Side Row L.

So, I think that gives an idea on the demand for tickets the rest of the way.

If we're playing this game, let QP play the entire game (after holding him out of Miami and uva). Time to look towards 2019.

If we end up playing Marshall, bowl eligibility would be at stake. I certainly hope we don't decide to play the 3rd team QB with that on the line.

The more games this team can play, the better. I don't care if we win both or lose both I think we should play the game anyway.

Agreed. And after we beat UM and UVA, I hope we move forward and play this Marshall game. More the better.

.... This aged well

Yes it has

Started to post something about 6-6 record. Realized I was being incoherent.

Tbh it's less than a 50% chance but Marshall could beat us straight up, they have that former Miami receiver Tye Brady who tore NC State up last year. They're 7-3 already this year and you know they'd get up for the game with us.

Report: 12th game won't be needed

Honestly pretty sure we'd lose by 2 TD's to Marshall anyway at this point.

I am working an analysis on that based on S&P+ ratings. I just posted a topic about how well our offense performs vs. S&P+ averages.

So why is everyone assuming we can beat Marshall??? We can't stop the run and our one common opponent, ODU, they actually beat.

Look fellow Hokies, I get it; but it's time to take off the orange and maroon glasses. We are not a good football team this year. We have regressed and our defense is in tatters. I'm sorry, but as painful as it may be to read/hear, we are not winning another game this season.

Go Hokies!

Even if there's the slightest chance at a bowl game, I'd like to take the chance. I'd much rather finish 6-7 than 5-6, even ignoring all the extra practice time that likely be used for preparing for next season, and even if we lose the difference between 5-6 and 5-7 is miniscule. I mean, sure, my Marshall-student sister-in-law will mention it relentlessly every time I see her for the rest of eternity, but at least we live on opposite coasts for now.

Having finally seen this team in person today, I hope this doesn't happen and football season mercifully ends next week.

I don't get this. You actually want UVA to beat us.

Please do is all a favor and take that attitude over to Le Saber.

No I want them to beat the brakes off the hoos and then be done with it.

I'd. Like to see VT beat UVA on Friday. I'm OK with playing or not playing Marshall. The team could certainly use more practice.

Not sure the practices are helping.

Well, I can't imagine that more practice would do much harm to next season, and can only help give players more reps and hopefully get a bit more time to build a foundation to work on during the off-season.

They've been practicing all year and have got worse so I'm not sure it helping. Sometimes just better to cut your loses and and start over next year

They've been suffering more injuries all year, the starting eleven on defense has changed just about every week. Hard to have any sort of consistency when your team is young and your teammates keep getting swapped in and out.

Here's a legitimate question - is the team allowed to practice the week after Thanksgiving regardless of a game on December 1? Technically, that weekend is another bye on the schedule. Or is there a limit on practicing during a non-game week during the regular season?

I feel like if there answer is "no" we should just schedule the game now, so that even if we lose to UVA we get the extra week of practice. Even if that means we finish 4-8.

Watching this Washington state game makes me puke because of my old expectations of what our offense could be

Chick Patty w/ Cheese

We might as well go ahead and cancel that Marshall game now. Even in the unlikely event that we manage to beat uva I'd rather just cut our losses and get into the off season. The sooner we end this tumultuous season the better

The sooner we end this tumultuous season the better

False. The off-season is a long dark time. The longer we can stave it off, the better.

Look I'm not going to advocate for coaching changes but I do think something needs to change. And frankly, as much as you may not like the off season, the sooner it begins the sooner some potential changes can be explored by this staff. This season is wrapped up. We have nothing more than pride to play for. I say we play our last game against uva and, win or lose, limp into the off season to begin licking wounds and making changes. The longer we put that off the worse we'll be next season

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

I agree. Normally I would say extra games and bowl prep is good for a team's continued development. But this team isn't getting better. It's getting worse by the week and the team is searching for answers that I don't think our coaches have. Something has got to change this offseason. If not, another underwhelming year and this staff is going to really feel the heat if they aren't already this season.

With respect, I completely disagree. My biggest gripe right now is that this team is losing morale quickly in games. They are not a good team, and there are many reasons for that. But the one thing this coaching staff should be preaching above all else is to just go out and play, keep playing, keep learning, keep giving it all you got. The thing I hated most about the Miami game was not taking a shot with 30 seconds left in the first half and three timeouts. If we don't do everything in our power to get a 12th game and act prepare hard for it, then that would really be quitting. That would be way worse to losing to Marshall in my book.

Play it, I guess. The local businesses could use the additional revenue.

Fu has 2 years before I comment on his job security. Bud gets a pass (OH YES I DID) for now. Corn....admittedly my patience with the offense is much thinner because of the consistent underperformance spanning OCs and decades, save for some outlier years here and there. But if we lose this Friday, he gotta go.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:

And it'll be a nooner. Probably on ESPN3 anyway.

Hey, we haven't lost a noon game all year.

Honestly, Marshall would probably be favored by ~1. Now we can potentially have a bad record, AND a loss to both ODU and Marshall yay!

@hokie_rd

i don't see us beating UVA. I guess we could schedule a game against any school for Dec 1 just to give some PT to some 4th stringers.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

So we're paying Marshall $1.4 mil for this game whether it happens or not.

Lots of money to drop for a game that may not even happen

Edit: for the record, I think this is a terrible financial decision.

Where is that number coming from?

Darren Rovell tweeted it, but it may not be accurate.

It looks like it's considering some amount from insurance from Marshall not playing the SC game. Fingers crossed that's the case.

1.4M is the insurance payout. Minus whatever we pay.

might I suggest you stop posting crap that is purely speculative just to stir the pot? kthanxbye

So Rovell was very far off on the numbers he reported, which is a good thing.

Looks like if the game happens, we'll pay $300k, which is very reasonable.

Looks to me like Rovell pulled numbers out of his ass when he heard VT insiders reporting on the agreement.

He took the insurance payment Marshal is getting from CUSA and then added the VT name to get clicks.

Have y'all even read the tweet?

100% factually correct, Marshall gets paid $1.4 million whether it's played or not. He never said where the money comes from, and assuming that we'd pay $1.4m even if it wasn't played is a huge stretch.

He had plenty of characters to put in there WHY and WHERE from they would be getting that money. But then an insurance policy tweet wouldn't get near the traction that this vague tweet did.

It's Twitter. Yes, he could have explained that a bit more, but Twitter is more for off-hand comments than in-depth analysis.

All I'm saying is, if you read that and think it means "Virginia Tech will pay Marshall $1.4 million, whether the game is played or not", you should probably go check a couple facts before passing it along while adding your own (false) interpretation to it.

Rovell was 100% on the numbers he quoted. He just didn't say where the money would come from.

If the game happens, we will pay Marshall $300k, and their insurance will pay out $1.1 million. If the game does not happen, we will pay Marshall $100k, and their insurance will pay out $1.3 million.

That number sounds ridiculously high

This team won't beat Marshall even if a miracle happens and we beat uva which I can't see happening hell I expect the only reason lane might sell out on Saturday is cause of all the wahoo fans coming to see the streak ended

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

If the game happens I'll be front row on the 50 yard line for $25. Yelling as the team that just upset UVA battles to keep the bowl streak alive!

Wait, if this game is played, it turns into 2 future games AT Marshall? Edit: reread, I was wrong.

It's a home and home regardless. If we beat Virginia we pay them $300k and host next week. If we lose, we pay them $100k and there is no game. Either way, we have agreed to a future home and home.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Hey, that's even cheaper than the "$500k and a future series" I posited above.

And a much better deal that the stupid ECU series.

I'm not sure if I like this or hate it. I personally think it would have been better if we did the deal earlier in the season and would have played the game no matter what. I guess I hate the contingency part of it, or "only if we need it to become bowl eligible". I mean, that is just asking to lose this game.

Agreed. How is it not worth $200k (the difference between whether it's played or not) to sell at least 10k tickets at $25 each (plus concessions and everything else) and get the extra practice time as a bonus? And that's even before considering the optics of the situation.

Optics?

Who actually cares?

Compared to this year's record, I'm not sure it moves the needle at all.

Can we switch them out with all future ECU games?

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

This whole deal is just going to be super embarrassing when we end up having to cancel it. This is something I just wish we hadn't even tried doing. We look foolish now and we're going to look a whole lot more foolish on Friday night.

This whole thing is terrible. I seriously question Whit's decision on this

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

We look silly on the field. The athletic department would look even sillier if they hadn't scheduled it, and instead we actually upset UVA on Friday and finished the season at 5-6 with no hope for a bowl game. Yes, it's possible that we still could have scheduled it, but it likely would have cost a lot more. This way, Marshall can start planning their travel arrangements, and if we lose to UVA the $100k guarantee should cover any cancellation fees or charter bus deposits and more.

Scheduling this game and cancelling it after a loss to UVA is waaaaaaaaaaaay less embarrassing than losing to UVA, and even less embarrassing than the product we've been putting on the field for the last month.

This football team doesn't deserve a bowl game. We're reaching for straws to preserve a stupid bowl streak that no one outside Blacksburg even cares about. We look petty and arrogant scheduling Marshall just to keep the streak alive. Even if by some miracle we beat uva I guarantee you Marshall will be so much more amped than VT for the game. They're going to smother us and enjoy it. What's the point? I think playing the game would be worse for this team than the extra practices would be good for it.

This team is so terrible that I'm not really sure the extra practice will make a considerable difference anyway. We just need to hurry up and get to the off season so that any potential changes the coaching staff might make can be made.

I know a bunch of you will say that the extra practices will actually be good. Honestly it's debatable, but I think rest is more important and the players are probably as ready for this nightmare to end as I am.

I would prefer the coaches hit the recruiting trail early and hit it hard. And anyone who thinks keeping the bowl streak alive is important for recruiting is fooling themselves. I can show you 20-30 teams who recruit better than we do and non of them have the bowl streak we have had.

This whole deal with Marshall is really stupid. I'll die on this hill.

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

This whole deal with Marshall is really stupid. I'll die on this hill.

How about instead of dying on this hill, you just take a break from posting for a bit? I don't mean to offend, but you're taking this season pretty hard and, from following the trend of your posts, it would seem that you're actually riling yourself up further by continuing to spew negativity on here. I'm all for venting and getting it out of your system as a first step to getting over disappointment, but you appear to be spiraling a little. Take a step back. Enjoy what you can in life outside of hokie football (which isn't super enjoyable right now, clearly). Make healthy choices and don't let this keep you down.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Fine. I'm not as bad off as you think. I am venting tho. But in reality I don't really think this football team is worthy of a bowl. We've had a bad season, for sure. Objectively this team shouldn't be in a bowl game. I don't want to lose to uva but with the season we've had I'm not convinced we can beat them. Even if we do, I'm not sure sure a bowl game is the best thing for this team. Scheduling Marshall tentatively is a bad move IMO. I'm not optimistic that we'd beat them, first off. And if, by some miracle, we do win two consecutive games I don't really think going to a bowl is in the best interest of this team. Perhaps it's naive of me but I don't think any changes will be made before a bowl game and if any are to be made they need to be made sooner rather than later.

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

"6 wins" is the requirement for a bowl. If a team reaches 6 wins they should go to a bowl. If we end up at 5-6, we are scheduling a much tougher opponent than the one that cancelled a game on us earlier this year, and if we win we deserve a bowl game because we will have 6 wins.

Side note, I would pay good money to watch you walk into the locker room and announce to the players that even if they beat UVA you don't think they deserve a chance at a 12th game to earn a bowl.

I'd do that. At the very least it might be a good motivational speech before playing a rival. Light a real fire under their ass. In fact, maybe I should do that. Because, dammit, someone needs to.

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

The concept of "deserving a bowl" is seriously tainted by the number of bowls these days.

It's an outdated concept that goes back to when it was an honor to be invited to a bowl game. That hasn't been the case for decades.

As for having a game with Marshall if VT beats UVa, yes, they do deserve the 12th game for a chance at continuing the bowl streak. It's not like beating Marshall is a gimme. If those players muster those those next two wins, yes, they "deserve" a bowl game.

Is that why bowl steaks longer than 9 years are so rare?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

You see, the thing about a streak is that you only have to blow it one year to lose it.

I really recommend a big plate of crow with a side of humble pie. I just had some and it's marvelous. Really thrilled we beat those boo hoos. I have repented and restored my faith. GO HOKIES

Hopefully Marshall can replace ECU for the next two times Tech has to play them, and hopefully I'm still at Marshall when the game happens in Huntington. Marshall really gets up for these P5 games in Huntington, and it would be a great time for all fans, VT alike.

At this point, Marshall is strictly doing us a favor (and taking our money).

They already have 7 wins, potentially 8 going into next weekend. C-USA doesn't have a bowl hierarchy like the ACC, they just put their teams in bowls. Therefore, an extra win or loss doesn't affect their bowl placement.

So, will the men's basketball game and this game be played at the same time?

Eeeeeeeee. Now wonder they are doing the first come first served parking.

Pretty sure basketball is being moved to 5pm
