You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

I wonder how much of this is actually the coaches telling him to make a decision so they can still have time to move on to someone else.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Btw I just watched Tahj Gary's highlight video and Devyn Fords Highlight video, how is Tahj the 3*? Tahj runs a 4.46 while Ford runs a 4.63.

Ford has a bigger frame and more potential size to grow into

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

and Ford has much better lateral cuts/balance. He is not particularly fast, perhaps below avg for a top end P5 school.

King and Gary both have better speed but they aren't going to break anyone's ankles. Both are also fine receivers. Coaches will try to get King matched up on a LB.

Did you watch Gary's film? He has surprising quickness in certain situations. Not the overall quickness Ford has, but he will break some ankles.

Case in point forward to 6:05 in this...

Yes. He is very good and I'm excited that he committed. Same with King, who is local and I went to see in person.

I'm glad we got Gary. I think he and King have huge upside as a tandem.

Show me this 4.46 you speak of. Never seen that, on film or in print.

If he runs a 4.46,
a) he's the biggest 3* steal ever
and
b) my video card needs replacing. He's never looked faster than Ford to me.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

I went back and checked again, his shuttle was a 4.46. I apologize. They don't list his 40

I thought Ford was laser timed at 4.63 this summer. And Gary is faster at 5-9 215

Is there anyone who can give a quick and concise breakdown of our remaining targets for this class and where we stand? Obviously it's a small class, but we have Sainristil decommitted and possibly Dorlus decommitting in the future. I can't imagine we aren't still actively recruiting other players in the wake of these loss/potential losses. The staff has been aware of the Sainristil situation for months.

Deng, another corner (maybe JUCO), JUCO/grad DT's. That's about it.

Does he project as DE for us?

Would imagine so. I'm intrigued by what he brings at backer though. But DE is a bigger need to me.

Whoops.

Yes, meant Amazon.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Indy is really bad this year (1-6). They have some decent DT recruits in addition to Deng but no one on offense or in the secondary I guess. Last Chance U is going to be interesting this year, they've never had a team not in the top 10.

Outside its night time, but inside its LeDay

Hey Everyone,
These are two sophomores that play for my high school that are pretty under recruited at this point and was hoping that I could generate some buzz and feedback because thier tape is already pretty impressive
*Sam Knipe is being recruited as a LB for PSU but plays safety weekly

Dre Green does not have a 247 yet but definitely will soon
(the green team in his tape has the best defensive line and LBs in the state- Central Dauphin)

Anyone have any analysis or feedback?

You put those words together, those are my favorite words, Popeyes and bahama
- Mike Burnup

Anyone have any analysis or feedback?

While I am no French, I have looked at a ton of recruit tape and I can say that I like what I see here. Looking at Knipe's film, his athleticism and instincts just pop off the video. He also has pretty good technique to be just a freshman.
If you look at the 1:34 mark, he has a good form and gets his hands up right at the snap, which is important when trying to block defensive tackles in the "b" gap or juvenile wolly mammoths. At the 1:52 mark he employs the Jazz Hand technique, which destroys most of Romania on his way to a touchdown. The most important thing that I see here is that he has good muscle control (specifically the Latissimus dorsi), and that's really under appreciated in today's game. He does have questionmarks, specifically he's a safety with the last name Knipe (is the K silent? the N? the Q? Is questionmarks one word or two?) We can't really judge that based on film tape alone. The other recruit you posted, Dre Green, easily has a 4 star name and I expect all the big dawgs to come after him.
His tape is impressive and you should know that I've been sick and on medication for four days so you may want to get someone else to give you feedback after all.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Knipe (is the K silent? the N? the Q? Is questionmarks one word or two?)

It's pronounced "Kevin".

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Way to Go Jaden

How has it become a challenge to attract DB talent to VT?

He was recruited by Glenn Scott he was never going to stay after he was fired. We also thought we had the guys we wanted and turned down other guys like Tank Land.

I think we'll be fine 😉

"Roll Tyrod"

When we offended Torrian Gray by cutting his pay.

Eh idk if that's true. We've gotten commitments from plenty of high 3* or 4* guys over the past few cycles. Really we're down two more than we should be st this point with the Capehart situation and Webb's injury.

Think you meant A. Alexander not Capehart.

Nope meant Capehart. The point that Tsunami made was about not being able to attract good DB recruits, and Tahj was a borderline 4* recruit that we had slotted for corner. If we hadn't pulled his scholly, there's a good chance he'd be contributing right now and likely would be starting. More polished than Watts and Farley coming out of high school.

Didn't he tear his ACL?

Yes, this spring.

The point I was really making is gone are the days of Macho Harris, DeAngelo Hall, Brandon Flowers, Jayron Hosley and all the Fullers. We now struggle to land 3 star talent and are super excited when we do. Stars aren't everything. I get and believe that. But they are a very good indication in a larger sample. We need to get back to attracting 4 and 5 star talent in the defensive backfield rather than 3 star talent or we are going to be giving up a lot of yards just like we are this year.

Me thinks your memory is pretty short lived, we landed kendall not 5 years ago and jeremy webb was a 4 star and dj crossen was damn near it. I think the tail end of beamer's era really hurt as did churning through like 3 DB coaches in a 3 year period. We havent had to deal with that for a while and torrian gray was a great coach and a great recruiter as well.

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

I mean that's not really true. Our DB recruiting has been relatively similar, there has never been a time where we were landing 3-4 four*+ type guys a season. Also Brandon Flowers was a 2* and Kyle Fuller was a 3*.

That said, it has been awhile since we were really in play for a top of the line, 5* or high 4* corner. That should change in 2020, where we are at least in the discussion with Miles Brooks for Trinity a solid 4*, and in 2021 we currently lead for two 5* corners, but there's a lot of time to go.

I don't have time today but going to have to fact check those guys ratings compared to what the last three classes have brought in.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Focusing on the CB's:

Macho Harris - 5 star
Kendall Fuller - 5 star
DeAngelo Hall - 4 star
Jayron Hosley - 4 star
Brandon Flowers - 3 star

Last 3 classes:
Jeremy Webb - 4 star (Juco with 2 years eligibility)
DJ Crossen - 3 star
Jermaine Waller - 3 star
Bryce Watts - 3 star
Caleb Farley - 3 star
Jovonn Quillen - 3 star

Somewhat counter to my point, I believe Flowers as a 3 star is the best CB ever to play for VT. He attended Hargrave and it seemed like back then that all those guys that went to Hargrave or Fork Union were consistently underrated as prospects.

I know you can win with 3 star players. Not making a case against that. It just makes it much more likely to win if you sprinkle in the 4 and 5 star players along with them. In Flowers case, he played opposite 5 star Macho Harris. Where were opposing offenses supposed to throw the football?

I'm a little surprised we haven't been able to land a top corner for the 2019 cycle. There seems to be a great opportunity for early PT. Hopefully we can buck the trend in 2020 and 2021.

You're also using a span of what, 2000 or 2001 through 2013 to capture Hall through Kendall?

You then compared it to a 3 year span. How is that a fair comparison? You just cherry picked the all star recruits from over a decade and then compared it to our last three classes.

Agreed. I considered and realize that. What I did notice though is that several of those players did play together.

Hall played with Ronyell Whitaker and Jimmy Williams.

The post was in response to Hokie Fireman's request which specified the last 3 classes.

Kyle Fuller isnt listed, he was not highly rated. Roc, Adonis, Exum, Facyson, and a lot of other guys that lined up at CB that weren't highly rated. We just lost 4 DBs to the NFL, I dont think anyone outside of Alabama could handle that.

Alabama did just lose their entire secondary to the NFL as well. They also had to take pretty drastic measures. They replaced the safeties with a sophomore and a junior, but they went out and got a JUCO corner (Savion Smith) and are starting a true freshman Patrick Surtain, jr. Once Diggs went down for the year they had to move Savion back into a starting role and they are very thin at corner right now as well. They are taking a ton of corners in this class. Depth issues can even hit the big dogs, which goes to show how much more it even hit us.

They're giving up a lot of points this year. It's been masked by how many points they're scoring but their defense is not typical Bama.

Outside its night time, but inside its LeDay

That post was in response to Hokie Fireman's request.

Macho was a 4/5*, Kendall was a 5*, and Hosley was a 3/4*. Flowers and Kyle were both ranked 0.85, so low 3*. Hall was in the pre-recruiting service era. Outside of Kendall and Macho who were both once in a decade type DB recruits for us, our DB recruiting has stayed relatively the same. Where we've thrived is developing those mid 3* into top flight players.

The cupboard isn't bare by any means. We just need an elite player or two and it makes all the difference in the world. Gotta close on guys that are interested and stop letting top talent leave the state.

Agreed. But our recruiting isn't really any different than it has been. We have a great shot at two 2021 5* corners (I know, I know) and if we manage to land one of them then we'll basically right on schedule for our once in a decade type of recruit.

Don't forget Torrian Gray wouldn't talk to recruits mommas, and Galen Scott spent most of his time recruiting mistresses

I think a big issue right now isn't the talent but the experience as a whole. When you've a couple new guys playing alongside experienced players, the experienced guys can handle enough that the newbies can have a narrow focus. We don't have those experienced guys to bring the new guys along so it's painful right now. I'm hopeful we'll see a very much more mature defense next season.

It's not just experience. Overall talent is lacking to be competitive where many of us want to be. We've got guys starting who's power 5 offer lists were VT and Indiana. Another who's was VT, Indiana, and Kansas... Those guys aren't just going to turn into All-ACC caliber players because they're a year older. DL recruiting has been so bad the last few years, and it will continue to show significantly next year

This needs to be addressed.

Bigly.

As the CEO of football, I'm certain Fuente is aware of this, and knows that he needs to address it.

DHall just stated in response to JNorman, "that he remembers when he was a 3* recruit and no one wanted him".... not sure when he was referring to (soph, Jr, Sr year of hs)....

Recruiting rankings were a lot less accurate back then but whatever Rivals had him at was probably what he was referencing, they were the premier site for recruiting before 247 made their push to the top. The composite rankings for the 2000's aren't very reliable because they are mostly, if not entirely retroactive and when they don't have enough info they just go with a generic rating like .85 or .9 instead.

I thought Capehart was a receiver recruit.

Athlete. Would've been a corner for us but is a receiver at Maryland.

With Ingraham committing to Bama tonight, it pretty much confirmed, after apparently long being understood, that Rashad Cheney ultimately won't sign with Bama. He's a 4* DT, and a fellow hokie on Reddit joked about them giving him to us but I don't think we were ever in the picture for him. That said if we throw on the full court press and land him I'll be ecstatic.

Doesnt look like weve even tried to recruit him unfortunately.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Hopefully the only reason we hadn't recruited him was a result of him turning away interest with his infatuation with Bama and we can get back on his radar. DT is such a glaring hole on this team I would hope they would make an effort especially with Dorlus being a question mark at this point.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Oooh interesting, we are going for the ole flipperoo.

Love love love. Big time player IMO. Hope distance isn't too much of a factor for him.

I watched his film a bit. He looks skrong, but I can't tell if he has that "twitch" that Wiles loves. Looks more like Vinny to me (which means he's serviceable as a DT but more suited for a DE).

I'm confused by this comment. I get that our DTs may sacrifice a little size in the name of "twitch" but the DEs typically sacrifice a boatload of size for it. The DEs on the roster are in the 225-250 range while DTs are in the 275-300 range. Personally I see Vinny at DE as an anomaly rather than the norm.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Yes I agree. But he's the only comparable one on our program that has that size hence why I used him as a comparison. We just don't use / have success with 6'5 bohmeaths on our Dline (at any position, really). Usually 6'2 i'd wager is the average.

Yeah I kinda disagree with you on that one. Guy fires off the ball and has quick feet. Also uses his hands extremely well. Bud and CW don't necessarily care about the height of the DT as long as they're able to get the necessary leverage, which is easier to get if you are shorter.

Well I hope i'm wrong and I hope he commits then. Agreed it's not so much height, but our twitchy guy tend to be shorter'ish.

Nice to hear from all these SoCal Hokies. San Diego here. I hope we get this kid but it may be tough to beat out all of the Cali schools. Hes never left California as far as I can tell.

Super off topic, but my fiancée and I are looking to relocate to Cali. I'm getting some nibbles from recruiters in the Bay Area, but her heart is really set on SD. I obviously have no clue what industry you're in, but would you mind if we connected on LinkedIn and chatted a bit?

As someone who has had multiple friends leave the Bay Area recently because they just couldn't afford the house if cost make sure it's a GREAT job.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

Right, and thanks for the input. That's my fiancée's concern as well. We live in Arlington and weren't really expecting to actually end up moving somewhere more expensive. Her brother just moved to the Bay Area so we know first hand his experience living in the towns between SF and SJ. It's doable, but I certainly wouldn't make the move unless it was absolutely worth it - like you've said.

I grew up in the Northern Virginia area (Fairfax) but moved out to San Diego about a year and a half after college. I don't live there any more but every day I wish I did. That might have to do with me living in Africa but I'm telling you, the place is amazing.

All of SoCal is awesome but my personal opinion is that San Diego hands down beats the LA area. If you can sacrifice an arm and a leg and live in one of the coastal areas of North County San Diego, you're set.

I can't really comment on the job scene though.

Completely concur, also as one that grew up in Fairfax and has lived in SD. Would go back if I could, but OC isn't too bad either.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Bay Area is unaffordable unless you have a great job or love in some of the sketchier Oakland neighborhoods. SD is awesome from a lifestyle standpoint but the economy down there isn't that conducive to furthering one's career for the most part. Obviously I'm from LA and love it, but most people that go and visit there don't like it. IMO it's a hard place to visit but a great place to live (other than being expensive). Happy to help if needed.

That seems to correlate with what I'm seeing as well, i.e. San Diego. We love the city, but now that I'm looking for jobs there, I'm getting a tad apathetic.

LA is certainly a possibility - I set my recruiting options on LinkedIn to SD, LA, and Bay Area actually. I'm wrapping up my IT/data analytics focused MBA through VT in a few weeks, so most of the companies that have positions I'm interested in are younger tech companies, thus my initial focus on the Bay Area. My fiancée actually has a connection in a suburb outside LA, so I may actually try looking there a bit harder. Happy to take any leads I can be offered as well. I'm currently in govcon and hoping to move commercial which I'm guessing puts me at a slight disadvantage, but I've got a big 4 name on my resume which I think is helping me getting some of these initial phone screens.

Pretty hard to believe but a lot of SF tech companies are starting to move south to LA because it's actually a little cheaper down there. Interesting dynamic.

Happy to give input on neighborhoods, commutes, etc. if you need it.

SD is awesome from a lifestyle standpoint but the economy down there isn't that conducive to furthering one's career for the most part.

If you're in the Navy, Tech (esp. Qualcomm) or life sciences, or support for one of those industries, you'll be golden. Sixth largest VC economy. It has niche industries, but very solid economies for those industries.

My 3 bedroom 1,100 sq House is $6,200 per month in rent. I'm in San Mateo.

That's the Bay Area for you.

HOLY SHIT.... I knew it was expensive but not THAT expensive lol.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Yes, and only getting worse. I am getting out as soon as it is reasonable.

I'm 2.5 miles from work. 2 years ago it would take me 10 minutes by car. They've added so many apartments that if I leave at the wrong time, I'm looking at 40 minutes for that 2.5 miles.

The apartments: Studio is 3k/m, 2 bedroom 4K and the 1,000 sq ft 3 bed is $5,100. And they still have waiting list.

It is beautiful here, but I can't justify the cost.

Sorry to derail the conversation.

40 minute car ride for 2.5 miles... at that point I would just bike or maybe even just walk if weather permitted which im sure weather is usually never a problem

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

My fiancee's brother and girlfriend just moved to San Mateo after living in Sunnyvale for a year. They've got an apartment in the mid/upper $2,000s which would certainly work for us if that were to be the case. The idea of making something work long term is definitely the concern.

City of Orange. I used to be in SD, which is way better, but I can't complain too much. SoCal is nice.

Yeah, I'll second this statement. I grew up a Hokie, financially didn't make sense for me to go to VT so I went to Clemson. We need him, and like 3-4 other JUCO players on the defensive side of the ball in my opinion to counter all of this attrition we've had.

I think landing Figueroa and a grad transfer DT is damn near a must at this juncture. Perhaps Hewitt and Porcher take big steps throughout the rest of the season and offseason but it really seems like we at the very least need the bodies, if not desperately need them as starters.

How do we go about "recruiting" a grad transfer? Are there tampering rules in place?

there's a list maintained by the NCAA of graduating players who want to transfer.

What's the timeline for landing a JuCo commit?
Should we be looking out for news in November or closer to Early Signing or NSD.

Depends on the JUCO and the player. Some graduate in December, some in Feb/March, some in May/June

Appears to play with great motor with some quicks at 315. Curious in our precarious DT situation why no offer

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I thought it would be between us and A&M but when I saw LSU on this tweet I also got a little more nervous. I also saw on some other boards that we might be looking at Deng as a backer, which if that's his best position then so be it. However, I really think we could use him more at DE.

We just need good players on the field, period. We don't have enough talent to rob Peter to pay Paul. We have at least two starters on the defensive side of the ball tbatbare playing out of position and it shows because we aren't good enough in other spots. If the coaches see Deng as a backer, then that's where he needs to be.

No I'm with you. I want him at his best position. I'm just lamenting our DL :(

From what I've gathered we are in a good spot with him. Justin Hamilton coached him at VMI and recruited him to go there, so I would imagine there has to be a comfort level with Hamilton being on staff. I'm sure he could play backer or d-end for us, but if he wants to be a backer, being able to show him tremain's film is certainly going to favor us.
