That feels a bit high, but the extra exposure can only be good for the program.

Technically we're 16th, since there are two teams ranked at 7 for some reason

You put those words together, those are my favorite words, Popeyes and bahama
- Mike Burnup

there shouldn't be any ties. The points (votes) aren't tied. The AP screwed up it looks like with numbering.

Yeah, upon further review there are a ton of errors on the list.

First thing I noticed, when there are actual ties you're supposed to skip a number, but there are 3 times where there are duplicate positions and they still just increment the number, leading the 25th place team to have a "22" by their name.

Secondly, none of the 3 "ties" actually involve teams tied in vote counts. #7 Wichita State has 1,270 vs. #7 Nevada's 1,230, #15 Minnesota has 642 vs. #15 VT's 630, and #19 Northwestern has 473 compared to #19 Michigan's 437.

Also, there are a couple more places where teams are completely out of order. #6 Tennessee has 2 fewer votes than #7 Wichita State, #18 Mississippi State has 22 fewer votes than #19 Northwestern, and #22 Saint Mary's vote total of 333 is higher than both #20 TCU (311) and #21 UCLA (297).

EDIT: Upon additional further review, the top 25 as listed by their Twitter is correct:

The list on their website has a number of teams listed at their final 2018 ranking that shouldn't be there, such as Northwestern at #19 with 473 votes and Saint Mary's at #22 with 333 votes. Compare 2018 Preseason rankings with 2018 Postseason rankings.

FINAL EDIT: The AP has admitted to the goof and has fixed the formatting issue:

The ACC is shaping up to be strong again.

Interesting how Clemson has improved and Miami has slid last three years.

This seems right about where we should be. Had a not so great end to the season last year but will have the most talent (8-9 ACC starter level players) on our team than any other time in VT Bball history. Should be a fun season!

As long as we don't play ODU...

15 supposedly ties the highest preseason ranking for Tech ever

Is the AP bad in maths? Seems like we should be 17 instead of tied for 15 (based on points and a tie at 7.) Or am I missing something?

Anyhow, good to Buzz's bunch get some recognition. Hopefully it doesn't remove the chip from their shoulder.

Man, the ACC is stacked. 11 schools are receiving votes in this thing.

Maybe it just me, but after losing to ODU, I feel like we have lost the right to making fun of UVA to losing to UMBC.

But thats just me again... to each their own.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

The difference between the two is the fact that UVA was not only a bracket number 1, but also the number 1 overall seed in the country. It set a historical precedence as being the first and still only time that a 1 seed has lost to a 16 seed.

Whereas, we were just an overrated (was it like #12 at the time?) young team who lost to a bad team which happens on a more frequent basis across sports.

I mean, I see where you are coming from.... but it was still one of the most embarrassing losses for a D-1 P5 football programs... but like I said, that just me.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

The UVA loss is certainly more memorable, however, it doesn't change the fact that the ODU was technically one of the biggest upsets on college football HISTORY.

Not even the biggest upset in VT football history. Doesn't matter.

Sorry, but clearly when it's championship season, the games and rankings are much more important.

Any college basketball fan knows about the UVa-UMBC loss.

The only people who actually care about the VT-ODU loss are ACC, VT and ODU fans (or anti-fans). I'm guessing that if you brought it up to most fans they'd shrug because they just don't care. VT wasn't really predicted to be a national championship factor in college football this year. The casual fan might have noticed that week, but has likely already more or less forgotten all about it. Certainly this week they're more focused on the Ohio State loss, which is more significant in the college football world, because they are considered a playoff factor.

Hence why i literally just said the UVA liss was memorable...

I'm just saying that it might be technically a big loss, but in terms of historical football losses, nobody but VT, UVa, and ODU even care.

Embarrassing, yes. Telling, yes. But is it really an historical loss if nobody cares?

Even in the context of this season, OSU losing to Purdue is a more historical loss, as it likely knocked a team out of the playoffs, and potentially out of their league championship game.

This is just one of those reasons that rankings are meaningless until the fourth or fifth game of the season.

Well I hear about it everyday on reddit lol and that's the largest college football forum on the internet. So it definitely isn't irrelevant.

I actually think you are under emphasizing the loss at this point after seeing your thoughts on it. I agree that no one cares about VT in general hence why people won't remember the loss as vividly as others, but I guarantee you if you ask any football what the worst loss of the year so far is that they say VT.

I'm saying that I'm one of the biggest VT fans I know (outside of this forum), and even I don't care much about it at this point. So I'm pretty sure that as a one-off event it's not all that significant. If we continue to lose games, maybe it will be, but only in combination with those other losses.

Oh, I fully expect the shit-givers of the internet to continue to be what they are, and also I'm certain that this will somehow come up. Will certainly come up in the "end-of-the-year head-scratching moments of the season", and it is still written into the permanent history as an odds-breaking moment. If someone wants to tug on your leash on reddit, yeah, they can and they will.

There will be some nerds or VT-haters, or ODU/UVa/VT fans that will remember this until the day they die, but most everyone else has forgotten it already. It will continue to be one of those "I can bring this up at any time and you won't have a comeback for it" events.

In the big scheme of things, it was an embarrassing exhibition game. If I had a choice between losing to ODU and losing to UVa, though, I'd lose to ODU and extend the winning streak vs the Cavaliers.

It's pretty inexcusable, but it is what it is.

Ill be honest, i dont really care either. But i personally dont why someone would ever be embarrassed about a loss. I try to refrain from associating any sort of intrinsic value with whatever team a fan likes. Its not that im embarrassed by it, it just really dampens my ability to shit talk other fans when we have that black mark on the season lol.

Yeah but UMBC also won their conference. Something to be said for playing a team that believes they can win. ODU will be lucky to win three games this year

whatever their win total is, they'll be lucky to be there. That last win was the most luck I've ever seen.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Taken by themselves they are comparable. But our loss was just a regular season football game. Sure we were ranked fairly highly, but a) it was 3 games into the season so rankings are pointless and b) we were #13 not #1.

For UVA, they were ranked #1 overall based on an entire season's body of work and became the first 1 seed to ever lose to a 16. And that was in the tournament, so they were eliminated. Their loss will always be waaaay worse, based on the situation if nothing else.

Never said ours was worse, just saying ours was VERY embarrassing and will probably go down as one of the biggest upsets in college football history.

Yea UMBC beating #1 UVA goes down as the biggest upset in college basketball. But at least they lost to a team with a respectable record (25-10) and won their conference basketball tournament. We lost to an 0-3 ODU team that got smoked by Liberty and probably will only win 2-3 games this year.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

If we're talking about all time regular season boners, look no further than Chaminade beating #1 UVA in 1982, still considered the all time biggest upset in college basketball history. An upset so large that it actually stopped plans to rename Chaminade the University of Honolulu.

But yeah everyone is going to remember some lame ass upset of an also ran middling ACC team in football....

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Wow yeah, at least our loss to ODU doesn't have a Wikipedia Page

I am not saying one is worse than the other.... I am just saying ours may not be the biggest or highly publicized (thank god not on an ESPN network) but it certainly goes down as one of the biggest upset in college football history.

I know myself I won't be dogging them for their loss because I know they will be quick to come back with the ODU loss. But again, to each their own.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I don't think our game is going to ever be replayed on ESPN Classics. UVA's will be a part of every countdown ever from now until another 100 #1's lose the 16-seeds.

lol well probably not. Our's wasn't an NCAA tournament level game but I agree more people will remember UVA's loss to UMBC vs. our loss to ODU

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

VT-ODU was a middling team in a bad power conference who was only ranked because they beat a FSU, who almost lost to Samford the next week, on Labor day going on the road and losing to a bad FCS team. VT's full body of work by the end of the season will likely make that loss irrelevant in the grand scheme. Given the quality of team we have this year, it might not even be as big an upset as the JMU loss, which was at home when we had a team that ended up going undefeated in conference play right after, finishing the year in the BCS. Our current team might make the Belk Bowl... maybe

UVa was the #1 overall seed losing to the worst overall seed by 20. UVa was supposed to make the Final Four. They lost to the worst team in the tournament by 20. They are idiots if they think the VT-ODU loss is anything close to being on par to that, let alone their horrible other upset against Chaminade 35 years prior.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

you can twist it any way you want.... ODU was 126 out of 130 in ESPN Football Power Index. They were and still are horrible.

UMBC was 25-10, finished 2nd in their conference, and beat #1 Vermont to win Conference championship. Yes they were a 16th seed, and maybe the worst, but they still a decent basketball team who made it to the NCAA tournament. Again, never said our loss is worse than theirs, all I said was I didn't think we had much room to talk shit anymore.... but if you think you do.... then again.... to each their own.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

ok yeah no, you're right. This who gives a crap regular season upset of an ACC also ran in football is totally on par with 16 over overall 1 in the NCAA tournament.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Never said it was on par with it, so I don't know where you are going with this.... I said I don't think we had much room to talk.... that's it.... just an opinion.... if that upsets you, then I don't know what to tell you.

THIS IS OCTOBER!

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Looks like it's correct now. From the link, I'm seeing that no one is tied, VT is 15th, Minnesota is nowhere to be seen, and Syracuse and FSU are 16 and 17.

I can't remember when we were ranked higher than Arizona in basketball. I'm gonna rub it into all my Wildcat acquaintances to be sure.

The guys in maroon shorts have the right idea.

This is a huge accomplishment for Buzz considering where this program was when he took over in 2014. At the end of the 2014 season, we had a KenPom ranking of 174 (better known as the number of fans at a UVa spring game). That's insane that we went from 174 to currently 22 in the preseason KenPom.

That being said, IDGAF. As this football season has taught us, preseason rankings don't mean shit.

Most overrated team is...

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

I'll give you 16 guesses, but you'll probably only need 1

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

I get that Guy, Jerome and Hunter are good players but the depth of talent behind them is questionable unless they're depending on freshman to provide that depth... to have them at number 5? I don't get it.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

They also just got Braxton Key, a key Bama transfer that played well against us last year. They will be legit good again this year but still think we split the series like the past two years.

How does the guy who according to what I've read transferred for a "change of scenery" get to be eligible immediately?

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

Supposedly because of an ill family member that might die before next season.

If that's true, then it would be a little fucked up for the NCAA not grant a hardship appeal. If it's not, then it's a little fucked up that UVa would use a "dying family member" to gain an advantage.

Are we now a "Wait Until Basketball Season" school?

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

I get the satire but no, we are finally becoming a solid all-around athletic university.

Both our bball teams are trending up, football is trending up despite the some of dooms-dayers on here over the past few days, wrestling, soccer, track and field, lacrosse, tennis, volleyball and swimming and diving are all trending up. The only sports with work to get back to solid ACC-level play is softball, baseball, and and golf.

Ranked in basketball, not ranked in football...

Man.

I want to believe in Buzz and his system, and I'm not sure I want to go down this rabbit hole again but this team is *so* small and it scares me.

On the AP top 25 ACC rosters, here's the number of players over 6'6":
Duke: 9
UNC: 7
UVA: 8
Cuse: 5
FSU: 7
Clemson: 8
VT: 2 Blackshear at 6'10" and Nolley at 6'7"

One of these things is not like the other.

Are we good enough of a three point shooting team to survive getting likely out rebounded every game?

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

There's a lot more to rebounding than height. We kill teams with speed and accuracy and that is likely going to continue. We are incredibly athletic and they have better than average basketball sense, which allows them to be in the right place at the right time for rebounds. We are fully capable of holding our own on the glass.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

That's a good point; despite not being the best rebounding team, they were a lock for the Dance with two weeks to go in the regular season. They literally can't get much worse rebounding this year, so I'd say things are looking up!

Look, I hope that in about 4 months I won't give our lack of height a second thought.

Just looking at our roster vs. the other highly ranked ACC teams and the bigs terrify me.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

IIRC our gameplan/style on offense put very little emphasis on rebounding anyway, and was predicated on getting the shot up (usually a three) and getting back on D.

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

For offense that worked quite well especially when the 3 was falling the issue we seem to have in our loses is that we give other teams 2+ attempts every time they go down the court cause we struggle to pull the defensive board. This is definitely visible when Blackshear is out of the game.

That's nice, but we also get slayed on the offensive glass so many times last year. We would paly a great defensive possession and then give up the second chance points.

Yeah, I don't care about offensive rebounds. If we're taking good shots there aren't a lot of offensive rebounds to be had anyway. We have to lock down the rebounds on our end of the court though. that's just fundamental defense.

You misunderstand. I'm talking about offensive rebounds by the opponent. We sucked at defensive rebounding last year. Like I said. The most frustrating thing last year was watching us play tough defense and then just let the other team get possession after possession again until they get a bucket.

You missed the part where I agreed with you. Let me restate it to be more clear.

[Agreed, we] have to lock down the rebounds on our end of the court though. that's just fundamental defense.

...and had one of the best seasons in our programs history.

There's a lot more to rebounding than height.

ABSOLUTELY!

Let's Go

HOKIES

Stats say that this is just plain false.

Eh yes and no. For example FSU has more height than basically everyone else in the country but they are always bad to miserable on the defensive glass. Mainly because they try to block a million shots and are thus out of position on the boards.

FSU would be the exception then, not the rule.

Stats showed that we were terrible at rebounding last year. Bottom of the ACC. That has to change to make that next leap.

I can't read. Disregard.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Buzz has a plan. We're gonna have Wabissa Bede get onto PJ Horne's shoulders. They'll share a uniform as to only count as one player.

Standing in @ 12'6", these guys will be our Boban Marjanović, all the rebounds will be ours.

Frees up a scholly, too.

The numbers always work out.

we a basketball school now boys

I'm really looking forward to this year. The Hokies are going to be awesome. Buzz is in the equivalent of a contract year, so this team is going to have some motherfucking GREAT coaching!

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Buzz would probably get an extension tomorrow if he asked for it. I wouldn't say his contract is a factor in his performance at all.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Contracts are all about leverage. If the team plays well other schools will want him and he has more leverage with VT. Yeah I suppose this is true every year, but more so during a contract year when recency bias becomes a factor.

Of course he's still on contract, and we'd extend him if we could. However, if the rumors about this potentially being his last year here are true, then it is the equivalent of a contract year, as he's going to be working his ass off to increase the quality of his next contract. That's all I was saying.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

This is good. It sets expectations high as they should be. With what Buzz has accomplished in his tenure, its time to take that next step. Rankings and conference contendership is that next step. We're a heavy on experience team this year with lots of upper classmen and if you look at teams built like that throughout the years in college basketball, the expectation is those teams to compete for their conference titles. FSU, Miami, etc have won the ACC in years when their rosters we're built like that. Our goal should be the same. This ranking by the outside experts reflects what's expected of us. Contend for the ACC championship and have the ability to make a good run in the Big Dance. Anything less than that and it will be a disappointment this season.

Call to arms Hokie Nation, lets make this happen!

This can be a final four team. Don't @ me.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

No. Curious what your source is to bring this up though...

I was reading the TSL basketball board (free). One of the guys who knows quite a bit stated it was a little icy. He mentioned progress has been made but it was awkward to say the least.

I realize many on here don't like TSL but they do have a few guys who know what's going on.

I was just curious if anyone here knew of the situation.

I saw on Twitter some where, that Whit was at the Basketball Tip Off at Lane Stadium a week or two ago with Buzz talking there.

Jon Rothstein has us at #10, above UNC, Villanova

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Methinks Jon Rothstein just wants some attention.

Pretty high for a program that has never once made it to the the second weekend of the NCAA tourney (ttbomk). Love me some Buzz and the improvements he has made, but top-10 ranking? Get serious.

VTCC '86 Delta Company, Hokie in Peru, TKPC#490, One of us!

TBF, we did make the Elite 8 in 1967, which at the time was the 3rd round. Though that is still our only Sweet 16 appearance to date.

Ive followed rothstein on Twitter for a while now, he was pretty high on us last year as well

I feel like he's been high on us during the Buzz era. He's very well researched and must think that Buzz does much more with less.
