Game Day Thread: Hurricane Florence vs the Coastal Division

First and foremost, I hope everyone in the path of this beast stays safe over the next few days. This sucker, while having weakened a bit wind-wise over the last 24 hours, is still going to pack one hell of a punch to the coastal regions, dumping in excess of a predicted 3 and a half feet of rain in some locations. Tropical winds are likely to be felt throughout the entirety of the Carolinas into surrounding states. We are all going to be impacted by this (unless you're fernley, off in China).

And what GameDay thread would be complete without something to watch? For those interested, there is a Live Cam on the top of Frying Pan Tower, which sits about 30 miles off the tip of Bald Head Island, where this storm has been expected to make landfall. The tower itself sits some 40 feet off the waterline, and provides a completely unique view of the events as they roll in.

Update: The Frying Pan Tower lost power at about 4:30am this morning, and as such, both of its webcams are currently down and replaying some of their 'greatest hits'. I'm going to go ahead and assume they'll be offline for the remainder of the hurricane, so apologies to Kevinaddicts.

With that said, there are some alternates.

First, if you still want to see footage from what appears to be a direct hit, its not a perfect stream, but Bald Head Island still has 2 working webcams, one on the mainland in Southport (top) and one on the Island at the ferry terminal (bottom)...

The Washington Post also has a current Live Stream going overlooking the USS North Carolina in Wilmington.

There is also this feed that has compiled 6 other feeds into one stream. Though, it does appear they are slowly going offline one by one...

Stay Safe everyone!

That video is intense!! Thanks for that Alum, although that is going to ruin my productivity today while working from home ha

That team sure did suck last night. They just plain sucked! I've seen teams suck before, but they were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

All right. While we're still under a caution, I want you to go back out on that track and hit the pace car.

Hit the pace car?

Hit the pace car!

What for?

Because you've hit every other goddamned thing out there, I want you to be perfect!

That American Flag is standing strong.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

This reminded me to text my sister and have her bring my VT flag in from the front porch. I've lost more than one flag to lesser storms and hey, she's evacuated with nothing to do while I work, so she can be useful.

It's shredded now.

What's
Important
Now

Come on Coastal Division, hoping for a strong defensive front, I expect Florence to grind away on offense, slow and steady.

Off note: last I saw Frying Pan was for sale actually.

I was expecting a high pressure front

Recruit Prosim

damn that noise is intense. how far into the storm is Frying Pan at the moment?

The eye is about 100 NM west East.

Looks like around Noon tomorrow the eye should be hanging out right next to the tower.

I hope folks along the coast have evacuated. The winds look strong in this video and this is just along the edge. Also, I assume the eye is east (not west) of the tower since the tower is only 32 miles off-shore....right?

"Pie is the American synonym of prosperity, and its varying contents the calendar of changing seasons. Pie is the food of the heroic. No pie-eating people can be permanently vanquished."

Yeah my bad I was going storm to tower in my head the wrote tower to storm.

The path of the storm will probably bring it north of the tower then wrap is back around north west of the tower. Windy has winds at the tower around 30-40 mph which matches with the buoy data from there: https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=41013

Wouldn't it just be called "Flo"rensics?

Also...

Thanks for this. Watching it now...

That's a terrifying amount of water hitting that pier.

Is this like one of those videos where something is supposed to happen and it never does? I still see a pier...

Nah, the camera was slid to the side and there was a lot of moisture in the air obscuring the view.

Funny how nature do dat

Not sure how to score it for Florence, but she caused two Coastal cancellations (ECU at VT, UCF at UNC), and made one game move locations (Ohio at UVA). Three games remained unaffected (Duke at Baylor, Miami at Toledo, GT at Pitt).

The Atlantic saw one game cancelled (WVU at NC State), one game with kickoff moved early (BC at WF kicks off at 5:30 tonight), and three games currently unaffected (Ga Southern at Clemson, FSU at Syracuse, Western KY at Louisville). I have a feeling the Clemson game might change.

I'd go with 3-0-1 against the ACC, if the Clemson game goes ahead it's 3-1-1 (the tie being the UVa game played in Nashville)

Update: Florence has officially reached the live feed. Woah

Structurally speaking, I don't know. There are a lot of unknowns, but I doubt it gets ripped to shreds. Probably will be plenty of damage to it though. That thing will have a ton of uplift force on it though too, so hope it is anchored properly.
That american flag will be lost at sea soon though :(

Built in 1964, it has survived multiple major hurricanes in Hugo (Cat 4), Bertha (Cat 3), Fran (Cat 3), Floyd (Cat 3), as well as many numerous 'minor' hurricanes such as Isabel and Matthew. It was recently inspected by the Coast Guard and Army of Engineers and found to be structurally sound, so its not going anywhere.

True story, the light boat that it replaced is now part of a bar/restaurant named Pier 66 within Hudson Park in New York City. I heard it was rated 5*, but that could be wrong.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Can confirm that the Frying Pan in NYC as it's known colloquially (officially Pier 66 Maritime Bar & Grill) is what you graduate to as an adult/recent alum from glory days at TOTS -- same vibe, only missing the Rail. Solid burgers and buckets of beer.

Bet it's some damn good fishing from there.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Yeah a lot of charter boats go out and fish there. Just from some pictures and dive videos I've seen of the place its got some pretty damn big barracuda hanging out under it.

Nice! I'd love to dive there. We were going to dive off of Moorehead City last year, but Matthew came along and revised our plans.

They are replaying some of their 'greatest hits'... That Tower is going through the worst of the worst right now. To get an idea, check out the Bald Head Island Ferry Webcams, which is the closest onshore location to the Tower itself....

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Also, as an FYI, the Ferry's Harbor is located off the inter-coastal. There is land between the ocean and the harbor so it isn't showing the waves that the ocean beaches are seeing right now.

Source, I worked on Bald Head for a couple of summers.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

It also helps that the storm is approaching from the north, so the wind is moving through Southport and BHI from the mainland rather than directly from the ocean. Not seeing anywhere near the kind of storm surge that, say New Bern saw last night. Though, now with the eye moving west, that is slowly changing.

Pretty much the only saving grace, though, as they're taking it right on the chin with the eye wall passing just north of them, so they're taking the brunt of sustained winds with no letup in the near future.

I'm going to say that it is necessary. At this point, I have nothing else to do except drink and play video games while I still have power.

Sister in Holly Springs (Raleigh) just lost a decent size tree in her backyard. She is on a pretty steep hill though. They still have power, but wind is picking up.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

This is my only concern. I live on a hill and my backyard is quite a bit up hill with 4-5 good sized trees and a pure sand soil + rain seems like a recipe for one to come at my house/boat.

So what would be the chance of getting South Carolina or West Virginia to Blacksburg during the bye week? It appears that they also had their game canceled or postponed and they have the same bye week as well.

How about "no" because then we'd have GT on a short week.

Why y'all keep wanting to fuck with the bye week? Leave that bitch alone. She there for a reason.

This. There was a moment where I thought there might be hope. But that ship has sailed. And why in the hell would we want to schedule a quality OOC opponent on our bye week right before playing a conference opponent that CJF has yet to beat? It's over.... we'll just have to deal with being 11-0 in the regular season.

I'd love to see it from a "play a big game" angle, but if we're still in the running for the Coastal at that point, heck no.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

There's no way we wouldn't be in the running for the Coastal, even if we lost every game between now and then and entered that game 1-2 in the ACC.

Hurricane Florence about to hit Florence, SC. I once stopped in Florence. I paid $10 for boiled peanuts, 10 drinks, several bags of chips with different rappers on it, i tried the one with Migos on it, it was alright, 6 bags of candy, and some kind of coffee my wife wanted. Leaving, there was a truck with a sign that said Georgia Peaches $5/bucket...i didn't trust it. We were in South Carolina, not Georgia. So we stopped at Peach World in Georgia on the way back up.

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

First reported deaths. A mother and an infant were killed by a collapsing tree in Wilmington, NC.

Pretty terrible. Why don't people listen, when they are told to evacuate days before?

What's
Important
Now

That's awful. Personally, I find it difficult to listen because we see an incredible amount of bullshit sensationalism on the news and it makes it hard to determine if the threat is real or not.

I am trying to find the video on youtube (have only seen it on facebook) but it's a weather reporter pretending to not be blown over by apparent high winds and two teenagers nonchalantly walk past without an issue.

I've also seen another reporter claim a road is severely flooded under feet of water and a car drives by right through it and it may be 3 inches deep. A third video stated "complete destruction" of a marina. There were some beat up boats and docks, but many boats still tied up and in their slips. Damage, yes. Complete destruction? Absolutely not.

It was also pointed out that many of the news outlets show the hurricane in red or orange color on their diagrams for rainfall, which would mean really bad rain, but if anyone were to view it on a regular radar app, its only green and yellow, meaning less rain.

This is not me saying this isn't a bad situation. Obviously, this hurricane is causing deaths and record flooding and damage and destruction, but it is hard to tell what might be a legitimate danger or not because the news makes it want to sound worse for ratings. A reporter faking trying to stand up in wind or pretending water is deeper than it really is, is flat out lying to the public and it does no one any good. I graduated with a journalism degree from VT and we were taught integrity in your stories is everything. Today's news makes a mockery of it, so how are we supposed to believe the weather reports and warnings or not?

If I had been on the NC coast for this weekend (as I was supposed to be) I would have heeded the warnings and left based on the initial Cat 3 and 4 reports. The next hurricane situation I'm involved in, I'm likely going to think about the joke reporter I saw in Miami during Irma or these other clowns I saw today and think, "yea, it never is going to be as bad as they say." I'm sure some others feel the same way and that's one reason people want to stay.

Hopefully, no one else gets hurt or killed and the damage is less than reported so far, and those still in the path and safe and don't have major property loss. I just wish the news would be more honest about it. The ratings will come either way.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

They don't make it sound worse for ratings, they do it to save lives. There is absolutely a certain amount of scare tactics that must be included in storm warnings. Without that, people ignore warnings and then have to be rescued off of their roofs because they think warnings don't apply to them.

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

You can express the magnitude of the situation without outright lying to people. In fact, they did a pretty decent job of it at times:

I have no clue what this is, but I am intrigued. Could you please explain?

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Now that was pretty interesting and very informative. Definitely, something they should show over a few times rather than the reporter faking the wind.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

That is cool, but as someone who experienced 6 to 8 feet of storm surge during hurricane Isabel, it's a little misleading to say that 3 feet or 6 feet of storm surge will result in 3 to 6 feet of water out on the street (unless that street is at seal level, which it won't be). At high tide it could be close if it's a low area, and people should still get out of there, but it's not a 1:1 add-on to street level.

The NHC creates a graphic now showing anticipated water level now (they call it "inundation"), and I think that's what the Weather Channel was referencing. I think the average person understands that 9' of storm surge doesn't mean 9' of water in your house.

And the pre-landfall warnings were totally legitimate. However, during the storm, the dipshit reporter is not faking being in a stronger wind to "save lives." He's doing it for a self-serving purpose and ratings. It makes all of those warnings look like a joke when he pulls this fake news. It undermines them. Thus, people might stay next time and think the warnings don't apply to them.

This is the infamous Mike Seidel with TWC. I've seen him do this type of stuff a lot over the years. Always gives me a chuckle out of how much he over sensationalizes what's really going on.

I happened to catch this live before our cable went out yesterday. Not only is this guy completely overdoing it, he's also fake bracing in the wrong direction, which you can tell by the grass blowing in the wind in the background. At one point while he's still on air after those clip ends, he falls to the ground and blames it on how strong the winds are.

This kind of over sensationalized crap is why a lot of people have issues trusting the media anymore. And this kind of stuff happens with every storm.

Beside this thought. There was a state of emergency declaired in 4 states. The local governments are warning people to leave. Who cares what media says. Get the f out.

No matter what, some people are going to stay.

My friends didn't leave Hatteras because "Everyone makes their own decision. We feel statistically and emotionally safer at home. " (I pulled this off their facebook page.) They are completely fine.

My friends in Morehead City refused to leave because their family has been through these for decades. Both are well prepared (legitimately) and know what they are doing and I think the only way to make them leave would be forcefully.

My friend's 70 year old mother refused to leave Pamlico because she claimed to like the adventure.

Some people don't believe the warnings because of all the overhype after the fact by the media. Some people just don't want to flat out leave, despite the government telling them to do so. It isn't the first time citizens don't listen to what the government or the news says.

No matter what, not everyone is going to leave. It sucks that five people are now dead, but as the media and government warnings also said, if you stay, you're on your own. Unfortunately, it looks like those folks made the wrong call.

I think its also BS that first responders get put in danger having to go after those needing rescue. They stayed, their choice, there might be bad consequences.

Honestly this might also be part of the problem, where people stay expecting if it gets really bad there will probably be help to be had. But not offering help would be heartless, and some people are always going to stay behind to play the hero.

I have never been in a hurricane, FWIW. However...

I think it would be really cool to ride out a hurricane. With one caveat - if I stay, then I am on my own, and become a first responder after the hellstorm has passed. While shaking an angry fist at the heavens the entire time.

I think I would like to do this at some point, though I'll have to get my fist in game shape first.

I rode out Hurricane Andrew in 2004 (I think) in the OBX with my family and my best friends family. It was a tropical storm the night before and a class 2 when we woke up early the next morning. It was crazy watching the water and tide rise, wind speed pick up, etc. I walked/crawled down the length of our dock in 130 mph winds. Wind was so strong that it was blowing water into the house through the seals around the window. I saw a plastic chair sitting on our screened in porch get picked up and thrown through the screen and sucked out by a particularly strong gust of wind. It was fun, for awhile, until my father's boat flipped later in the afternoon. We made the mistake of not pulling it out the night before (too many rum runners). The water rose around our suburbans but they must have been just high enough to not get damaged. 400 plus cars were destroyed on the island from the saltwater. Saltwater and electrical systems in vehicles do not mix. Some people tried to start their cars while parked under beach houses, which started an electrical fire and then subsequently burned the houses down. I'll never forget driving to the grocery store down the main road with water halfway up the door of the truck and guy in a boat passing me. I bought the last case of beer before they shut down sales and declared a state of emergency. Our small family john boat ended up in a tree across the street five feet off the ground, sitting on a branch. The next two days on the island were very weird with no power and everyone going to the beach or leaving. The ocean was FLAT. Finally, they ordered all visitors out. Somewhere we have a VHS tape laying around that we made of most of the day. I'll have to try and dig it up and rewatch.

I would totally ride out another one. I love the adventure of it. However, I would want to make sure my truck and my boat are totally secure and out of the way, have all of the proper equipment and coolers of beer. I'd also recommend being with some folks you can get along with being cooped up in a house for 2-3 days straight.

I think the last thing you should be doing is drinking while the hurricane is happening. It might inhibit your ability to actually survive.

Silly horse

To be fair, "state of emergency" doesn't really mean much beyond saying that the state will request federal recovery support.

What's probably more damaging is that a quarter of the 757 was under mandatory evacuation orders, and pretty much the worst they got was a high tide that was a few feet higher than normal and an inch or two of rain. Can't afford to many false positives or you'll start feeling the Boy Who Cried Wolf effect.

I can understand wanting to be at home. Totally. Hell, I stayed on marco island for Irma (Marco is where it made its "official landfall" I guess) . But the first thing I did was make sure to get my kids out. If no one else was able/willing to get them out, I would've been gone. I just dont understand taking the risk when your also risking your children.

Maybe I'm different, idk.

Warning- Filter lost.

A far more sad possibility is that they didn't have the means, whether money or otherwise, to get out.

not to make light of the real storm, but this made me laugh.

I hate that one of the "achievements" in my lifetime is going to be the naming of storms for ratings.

An interesting scheduling quirk I noticed -- Florence completely demolished ESPNU's schedule on Saturday. The original lineup was UCF at UNC (noon), WVU at NC State (3:30), and Marshall at USCe (7:30).

ESPN2 didn't fare much better, as the 3:30 (Georgia Southern at Clemson) and 7:15 (Middle Tennessee at Georgia) games both got changed to noon kickoffs on other channels. That's how UVA got a real TV slot (they were originally online only).
