not great for those of us in West Africa(looking at you, yeoldebay), since that means an 11pm start, but I'll take it

Hokie in West Africa...sadly, I can't jump up and down hard enough for it to be felt in Lane

Could be worse. It's 4:45am here in Nepal. Although I actually like games in the middle of the night - no distractions :)

VT BSEE '98, VT MSME '01

Okay well, thats cool...

All right. While we're still under a caution, I want you to go back out on that track and hit the pace car.

Hit the pace car?

Hit the pace car!

What for?

Because you've hit every other goddamned thing out there, I want you to be perfect!

Ugh. Totally screws with the Late Model race

Yeah. I actually toyed with the idea of doing both too of this was an early game. What can you do?

All right. While we're still under a caution, I want you to go back out on that track and hit the pace car.

Hit the pace car?

Hit the pace car!

What for?

Because you've hit every other goddamned thing out there, I want you to be perfect!

Watched VT/ODU last year at the tailgate on the backstretch. Missed part of the first heat but made it work. Was hoping to do that this year. Oh well.

please don't shit the bed

please don't shit the bed

please don't shit the bed...

Edit: oh god damn it, guys.

That's my nightly prayer.

My only solace is thinking about the fact we will be their first big time opponent running a crazy defensive scheme (hopefully) their back-up QB won't know how to decipher.

Technically we haven't shat the bed regarding the duke game... yet

Wanna win put boobie in! Let boobie spin coach!

Eh, I don't know how to feel about this. This game has made me nervous for a few weeks and even with Jones out, I'm still nervous. You're fooling yourself if you think this is going to be an easy game.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Consider me foolin' then.

You need to be careful with that optimism.

So far the Hokies have beat up an FCS toddler, and the offense struggled with a FSU team that's so bad, literal dumpster fires are calling to complain about their reputations being sullied. If you take away the punt block, and give FSU the TD they honestly should have had, that game is 17-10.

If I'm the HypeTrain conductor, I'm ordering the first officer to ease back on the throttle just a little bit...

Leonard. Duh.

My sentiments exactly.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Ahh yes, TKP: where you'll be reprimanded if you're overly negative, and yet snapped back in line if you're too optimistic.

man if this ain't that dam truth

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

I also agree that our offense left a ton to be desired vs FSU - it wasn't good by any stretch. I don't think Duke is as good as we fear, however.

Still probably 5x better than the two cupcakes we already played.

Duke's offense is just okay. However, their defense is balling. Joe Giles-Harris would be a starting linebacker on any team in the ACC.

Leonard. Duh.

FSU actually has a pretty good defense. We're about the same offensively as last year and Duke isn't actually very good. Cut is a great coach, but we're gonna be a 10 point favorite on the road.

Rip his freaking head off!

It'll be easier.

Nope. This game and Boston College make me anxious.

4 weeks ago, I would have laughed at you for even thinking that BC might challenge us. Now, I'm starting to slightly fear that game. I said slightly.

never had the opportunity to meet any o' y'alls asses, but I have tickets and looking forward to driving up, hope to hear there will be Key Play pre-congregations going on (and hoping for good weather as I hope to sweet-talk the Auburn wife in coming along)...

"...sticks and stones may break my bones but I'm gonna kick you repeatedly in the balls Gardoki!"

Hokie fans in a stadium that we historically overrun plus a 7pm kickoff, and the marathon tailgate that usually implies? That could be an interesting crowd that night. Duke football fans aren't exactly known to get rowdy, and we take it to another level at night...

I went down to Duke 2 years ago and it was 60-40 Duke fans, Duke 3rd downs were very loud in the 4th quarter.

I don't know what a Hokie is but God is one of them (excluding JMU/ODU)- Lee Corso

Pretty much everyone will be watching Ohio State @ Penn State. Only reason why I don't really like the ESPN2/ESPNU primetime slot. No eyeballs other than our own, and I have to miss watching that week's big game.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Plus Stanford at Notre Dame is on NBC at the same time.

So what I'm hearing is that we get a prime-time game where if we lose it won't really be in front of a true national audience.

I don't see the problem here.

Could be a good thing depending on how we play, dookies are no slouch like the nolies and monarchs

Very much considering making the trek to this game since it's in the evening! I had a lot of fun when it was played there back in 2016. I've of course been to many neutral site games, but that was my first away school game and it was a great experience. We really took over that stadium. I still laugh about the announcers attempting to get a chant going between the east and west sides and it totally failing because the east side was all Hokies.

A Hokie living in Tennessee.

I have 3 favorite teams. VT, Kentucky, and whoever the hell is playing Tennessee.

I last went in 2007 and the only chant going between the east and west sides was "LET'S GO" and "HOKIES".

I was also there in 2016. Had a blast other than the nerve-wracking finish. Two things I was impressed with (to reluctantly give them some credit):

1) Duke's renovations to the stadium were nicely done. They expanded it just the right amount for where Duke is right now as a program and put some super nice touches on it. I was there about 6-7 years ago and thought I was at Durham High School.

2) Duke fans seats showed up for that game look strikingly similar to Duke fans. We maybe had more fans than them. but it was a lot closer to 50/50 than a 70/30 that I expected unless the sea of blue on the west side and endzone were undercover Tech fans.

EDIT: Regarding Point #2, after further review, the call on the field is overturned. Static Duke seats look a lot like Static Duke fans.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

unless the sea of blue on the west side and endzone

Are you sure it wasn't just the seats?

Haha, positive no.

EDIT ^^^

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

The 'sea of blue' was a little misleading as they replaced metal bleachers with blue seats in that reno. It makes the sections along the sidelines look more full than they really are.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

This particular picture doesn't help prove my point, but I knew they put blue seats in as part of the renovation. I was looking at people, not seats and still stand by my point, but I could also see where a blue shirt and a blue seat could look similar from 85 yards away and copious amounts of Stella Artois in my bloodstream.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

I was feelin pretty good throughout the game myself, and I definitely remember it being more full than I can remember. That said, it was still a Hokie takeover. We overran the visiting sideline, and the home stands weren't as full as I remember.

Take this picture for example...

First of all, at first glance, you don't even realize it, but there's a stadium in the background. I know. On second look, it looks full, but then if you really pay attention, there are a heck of a lot more empty seats than it appears. If anything, Duke did a really good job hiding their poor attendance in the latest reno.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

I had to zoom WAY in , but I see it now. The scattering of fans with the seats does make it look like there's 5X as many fans there than in reality. The fact that I'm sober and had a tough time telling that makes me feel a little better. I think.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

I'm sure you were zooming in on the seats in that picture. /s

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Also having trouble seeing those stands....

The scene exiting the game was wild, too. I remember it taking 30 minutes to walk through one small part of the campus (kind of like a funnel between classrooms) because there were so many Hokie fans. I remember being beside a Duke fan that was talking about how well we traveled.

A Hokie living in Tennessee.

I have 3 favorite teams. VT, Kentucky, and whoever the hell is playing Tennessee.

This is a great pic! Looks like a home game.

I remember this!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

That was a nice walk back to the car that night. Hokies galore and all happy with the W. Also its a very nice campus.

Most likely will be buying tickets. Does anybody know the main visitor section excluding the fact that we will be filling up the stadium?

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Literally all of it. I would purchase on the VT sideline side though. Typically many more VT people on that side... anywhere. On VividSeasts you can still get something close to midfield for around $30 all in.

Is it football season yet?

i went in 2016 and it seemed like most of our fans were in sections 1-3

They ask you how you are and you just have to say that you're fine when you're not really fine.

Duke sneaking into the top 25 gets us the deuce, easy.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

With the way they've selected the games, I could see them trying to do a sneak preview of the ACC Network and put the ACC games on the U.

Temple at Boston College – Noon, ESPN2 or ESPNU
West Virginia at Texas Tech – Noon, ESPN2 or ESPNU

Florida State at Louisville – 3:30pm, ESPN2 or ESPNU
Pitt at UCF – 3:30pm, ESPN2 or ESPNU

Virginia Tech at Duke – 7pm, ESPN2 or ESPNU
Iowa State at TCU – 7pm, ESPN2 or ESPNU

I really hope our game ends up on ESPN2, since I don't have access to ESPNU.

yeah, what is the "game plan" (ahem) with this ACC Network -you hypothetically speak of? Been waiting for this for some time and assume that DirecTV will be picking it up. Cuz this ESPN+/On Demand shit drives me bat-shit crazy...

sorry, venting. continue.

"...sticks and stones may break my bones but I'm gonna kick you repeatedly in the balls Gardoki!"

The ACC Network will be essentially equivalent to the SEC Network, except that it may be even harder to find. I imagine that most providers will have it on their "premium tier" of channels, meaning you should expect to have to pay even more for cable than you already are.

Essentially, in my recent experience, tier 1 ("basic cable") doesn't include any ESPN channels, tier 2 includes ESPN and ESPN2, tier 3 adds ESPNU and ESPNNews, and tier 4 adds the SEC Network.

Honestly, when it launches next fall, I'm planning to finally sign up for whichever one of the sports-centric streaming services offers the ACC Network at the lowest price.

ah... cool, thanks. yeah we're already locked on whatever package that would be -ref: Auburn wife. so bring it on... subscriber overlords.

"...sticks and stones may break my bones but I'm gonna kick you repeatedly in the balls Gardoki!"

We'll probably hear quite a bit in the offseason. Although it probably won't get the uproar that the SEC Network got when fans realized they (potentially) weren't getting their games. On Fios, I got SEC Network in SD in time for the actual football games, and HD came a while later. But I have the middle package which also includes CBS Sports Network. I'm not worried about not getting the channel, but my cable contract also runs out in July 2019, so I'll be in the market.

There have been rumblings that ESPN might replace ESPNU with the ACC Network. There were also some talks of a true ESPN3 TV channel and ACC Network replacing ESPNU and ESPNEWS.

Now, if ACC Network ends up being an additional channel on top of ESPN 1, 2, U, News, and SEC (plus ABC games), I honestly don't know how ESPN would properly fill all of the available timeslots.

They don't really use ESPNews for many games, so I expect they'll take away the rest of them. Then, if you assume that each station gets 3 games (noon, 3:30, primetime) plus a total of 2 games of #Pac12AfterDark, that would be a total of 20 slots each week, covering a total of 40 teams. I don't see how they'd have a problem filling all those slots, even if it means dipping into the pool of games you'd usually only get via streaming.

I suppose it's also worth mentioning that this network will inherit all of the Raycom games, so that's at least one game built-in each week. Shouldn't be too hard to find 2 more.

Honestly, I think the biggest thing here is that we'll see fewer games on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU at the noon and 3:30 slots, which could be a bad thing but would also mean more night games in Lane, so I honestly can't complain too much.

That's actually pretty spot-on as an analogue to our Duke game, except home/away is flipped. Traditional conference doormat with recent significant success against a program that's spent the last few decades building a contender out of nowhere.

Not really relevant, it just occurred to me.

Suppose I should add that TCU used to be good-to-great through the '50s before dropping off the face of the planet until the late '90s.

After watching Duke and Florida State the past 2 weeks, this feels less like a trap game and more like a prime time showdown between 2 top 25 teams.

"The Cup is going nowhere MIkey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Please be ESPN2. If it's U, I can't watch it at home. We don't do well when I go to any bar/restaurant to watch a game, and I will be forced to just stay home and follow the gamecast/radio broadcast.

I'm not saying r/cfbstreams is a thing and that you should update your adblocker or anything...but where there's a will...

Unless it's Grandma Streams, most of the streams from cfbstreams aren't that great. Not worth the potential virus trying to slip through...

Most of the streaming services have ESPNU so just do the 7 day trial and cancel after the game.

It's stilla pain to do that, and you can only do so a limited number of times. But yes, it is an option.

Who's tailgate can I crash?

EDIT:
Not exactly directly related to an event that did not happen this past Saturday, I will no longer be making the trek down to Duke this weekend. I do appreciate all the people who were so willing to have me come join you down there though. You know where you can find me when we play Notre Dame in a couple weeks.

All right. While we're still under a caution, I want you to go back out on that track and hit the pace car.

Wait! I thought we were crashing yours. Need the TV for the afternoon games, haha!

I think we will be down as well. Haven't been before, so looking for pointers to tailgate locations. Are the public lots near Circuit Drive the best bet? Maybe we can coordinate a bunch of us meeting up in the same lot.

I mean, if you guys are looking, the Triangle Hokies alumni chapter has an all you can eat all you can drink (til it runs out) tailgate starting at 4, but tickets need to be purchased by EOD tomorrow so they can get the correct amount of food and drink ordered through Duke.

I know the prices sound steep, but its what Duke quotes us. Plus, 100% of the proceeds goes toward a scholarship for a local student, which coming from Out of State, is very much needed nowadays. Plus, since it is to a non-profit, technically its a tax write-off... Just sayin...

Quite a few of us are going to be there. At least for those 3 hours prior to kickoff. Before then, we'll be out somewhere in the lots havin fun.

Its usually fun. The kegs are local brews, the food is your typical NC BBQ buffet, and we generally have an appearance by the Hokiebird and Cheerleaders for photo-ops with kids, and then Whit and his staff show up to eat and mingle. They're all very approachable.

Hey, what if I want to get the kids liquored up too so that they are extra loud during the game? Didn't see a price for that one - assuming it's like a $10 add on?

Hey, if you can get the ABC certified tap handlers that Duke mandates with catering to look the other way, go for it.

I just got tickets for me and Hagy. We probably won't have an actual tailgate though, but we're going to give it hell trying. Looks like it's going to be a marathon day of drinking.

Was hoping it was late so I can get off work and go lightspeed to Durham and get way too drunk with some dookies

Awesome news. Mini-Brick's last football game of the season kicks off at noon that day. Now I can attend both and be able to bring him along to the Dook beatdown.

I originally made some plans for Saturday night thinking there was no way this was going to be a kickoff later than 3:30. Now I have to reschedule stuff! Thanks ESPN.

Sounds like you may need to start to implement the 6 day hold in your personal commitments, at least during fall.

This is not something that I have not considered.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

yeah, a must... especially down here -south of the Carolinas: here in/around Atlanta.

I don't know or have heard of ANYONE doing some stupid wedding between September and December. My wife's had some acquaintances back home in Alabama, and metaphorically spat on the previous invites to some random-ass get-together in the fall or whatever...

"...sticks and stones may break my bones but I'm gonna kick you repeatedly in the balls Gardoki!"

Was there in 2016, had a Duke fan ask why we shake keys! They also didn't understand why we wouldn't sit down!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Ah yes, I was at that game too. Yelling so loud that the Duke fan next to me put his fingers in his ears when we were on defense. That is, until the person I was with told me that I couldn't act that way as a visiting fan and since I was not the person driving, I thought it best to go along. Wallace Wade is basically Lane Stadium-lite.

Somebody could bring a giant box of earplugs to the tailgate.

Everybody grab a pocketful, and if some fans around you get irked, hand them a pair or three. Maybe just hand them out when you get to your seats and give them fair warning.

"When your team gets the ball, it's probably going to get really loud around here."

Can anyone explain to me how BC is ranked in the AP & Coaches, but Duke isn't? I mean the body of work isn't even close. In fact BC is only favor by a TD over Purdon't who is 0-3. A ranked Duke would really help our SOS.

I fully suspect that the Duke win will look better than the FSU win at the end of the season when it matters. Don't think it's that much of an issue Duke isn't currently ranked.

Why is there suddenly talk about our strength of schedule? If by some slight chance we take care of business all the way through, it won't matter. If more realistically we drop a few, it also won't matter. I don't think we are ready to start petitioning the playoff committee just yet. I hope I am proven wrong.

"with all due respect, and remember I’m sayin’ it with all due respect, that idea ain’t worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin’ it on" - Ricky Bobby

I didn't say anything about the playoff. I asked why BC is ranked and Duke isn't.
As far as talking about SOS, it's a pretty standard topic. The question is always, "yeah, but who did you play?" particularly in SEC country.

Ehh, the fighting Brohm's aren't as bad as their 0-3 record appears. Lost all 3 games by a combined 8 points. It's a home game, I can understand this line.

Good hire for Purdue despite the rough start this season.

I've been to a number of VT games at Duke. Cool little stadium. All the old timers get upset when you stand up (I try to be polite). But honestly, those Duke fans get a little more excited than the people in Lane Northeast.

Is it football season yet?

Just tell them we stand up a football games like they stand up at basketball games.

And I have to miss it bc someone planned a fall wedding. Seriously, people, get married in the spring or summer like normal people

Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate, and hetzers gonna hetz

Is it football season yet?

I had a fall wedding last year but I told my wife we weren't setting any wedding dates until the schedule had come out. We got married the afternoon of the ODU game but my groomsmen and I drank whiskey and watched the game up until wedding time 👍🏼

So you put your foot down and still ended up with a game day wedding. Yep, pretty much sounds like the start to a long and happy marriage. Happy wife.....Happy Life.

"with all due respect, and remember I’m sayin’ it with all due respect, that idea ain’t worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin’ it on" - Ricky Bobby

...but then the anniversaries

Hope she likes Blacksburg. My wife knows that's where we'd spend half of our anniversaries if we'd had a fall wedding.

Spoiler alert: we didn't.

My only non-Hokie sister is getting married next year. We gently told her if she plans a fall wedding, we will never forgive her. So instead, she's getting married in early June. To punish us with the heat and humidity.

We chose January, which is really the best time of the year to have it. Means during your honeymoon you get to escape the dreariness and spend a week in a nice, warm, sunny locale, among a bunch of other benefits.

At least it is not during football season... And if it outside, hopefully she has a backup plan.... We have a friend who got married at the Duck Pond at the end of JULY with NO backup plan... We watched the angry black clouds merge together before the wedding. As soon as the bride started walking down the aisle, the bottom fell out. The wedding party, including my hubby was dry under the gazebo. All the guests were soaked! Being 8 months pregnant and in soaking wet dress clothes was not a fun experience.

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

Honestly, I'm just operating under the assumption that I'm still invited. I don't know what the plan is or even where it is or the actual date. But after I told her when I would be busy this fall for pre-wedding activities due to already made plans (football and lot 18) and she told me I was being selfish, well, my give-a-damn might be broken 🤷‍♀️

Yeah, I remember that conversation....

Duke is a really fun place to play at night. With last year's upgrades, they now have the capacity to strobe the stadium lights. It is the only place I've ever seen it done and it is extremely cool. The campus itself is also extremely beautiful. If you arrive early, check out the Sarah Duke Gardens.

All this is to say, let's turn Wallace Wade into Lane Stadium South.

NOOOO!!!!! Time to convince my wife of brunch for our anniversary.

Shit that's my youngest birthday and we are using our Florida season passes to disney for the first time. Anyone know of a sports bar INSIDE Disney?

Yeah, we're celebrating my fiance's birthday that weekend, so we'll be at Busch Gardens in Tampa.... No sports bars in the park and not really a wonderful area to stick around in at night... Thankfully she'll be either drunk enough to give up on the park or tired enough to go back to the hotel by then....

This is going to be a good game. So glad to finally have a local game worth going to since I moved to the triangle.

man, what is with the reluctance with some fans worried this is a trap game. It's primetime. Hokies don't shy away from any situation. BRING IT ON.

All right. While we're still under a caution, I want you to go back out on that track and hit the pace car.

Hit the pace car?

Hit the pace car!

What for?

Because you've hit every other goddamned thing out there, I want you to be perfect!

I was waiting for someone (ANYBODY) to step up with this. Plus, IDGAF how much "better" or "competitive" they are or really get. It's effing Duke & we are BETTER & superior to them. #DESTROYDUKE

We've got our row 3 seats so we can give high fives to the players after another victory over Duke like 2016. My better half will be there along with her mom for her very first VT game ever. Beforehand she wants to check out the gardens and chapel on campus so wasknick chances are slim your gma will be throwing down a busch lite with you.
She does love some good bbq - any suggestions near campus?

The West Campus Union has some really good food. It is also a pretty cool building to just walk around in if you are touring the campus.

I don't think Mama needs to see me throwing down Busch Lights.

'specially with the "Stick"!

I'll be there in the RV lot. Anywhere I need to make sure I visit while I'm there? Bars? Restaurants? Breweries?

Ponysaurus one of my favorite breweries while I lived there! Monuts for coffee and breakfast/lunch. Parts and labor for food/beer in the evening or geer street garden for brunch on Sunday!

+1 for Monuts. Worth the wait in line.

Durham, or all of the Triangle?

If Durham, there is a pretty good scene in the American Tobacco Campus that borders the Durham Bulls baseball stadium. Tyler's Taproom and Tobacco Road are 2 that immediately stand out as nice places to hang in Durham proper. If you're looking for areas closer to Raleigh, I can tell you that the Leesville Tap Room at the 540/Leesville overpass in Raleigh is very kind to Hokies, and if you're closer to Apex, Glory Days is Hokie owned.

As for breweries, literally too many to count. Ponysaurus, as indicated, is really good. Bull City Ciderworks is really, really good if you're looking for some Cider in this nice weather. Bull Durham Beer is pretty good as well, but I think they are pretty much exclusive to the ballpark, and the season just ended. If you're coming closer to Raleigh, a couple breweries that have been extremely kind to Hokies are Lonerider off Westgate right near the Glenwood (US70) and 540 overpass, and Big Boss off Atlantic.

What Alum said except for missing (by far) the best brewery in Durham: Durty Bull. Fullsteam is right over there too. None of those places are walkable from campus though.

Betcha not many people were expecting Duke to be ranked and us not be when this match was planned! Also the 7pm kick is kindof LOLworthy now. Take it in stride yall. I hope we rebound like a superball dropped off a skycraper.

What's even more funny is that if the AP rankings were extended to a top 30, VT ranks at 28.

That was very confusing to me as I thought they would drop MUCH lower than that. I mean, in reality, IF (and we are now know that's a big IF) we beat #22 Duke, along with other top 25 teams losing, you can expect VT to be back in the top 25, which wouldn't be right IMO

It's called Poll Inertia my dude. It's why teams that start the season ranked high have an edge at the end of the season when it comes to playoffs/bowl placements.

lol I know.... dude.... I am just saying losing to an 0-3 ODU team and only dropping 15 slots doesn't make much sense to me

Especially when our 2 wins are over an FCS team and a FSU team that is significantly worse than expected.

No reason to even have any AP votes, much less being essentially ranked #28.

There is one voter who admitted to forgetting to check his ballot before submitting and left us up at #12. So, that's probably boosting our ranking a little bit.

So that's 14 of our 55 points. If he'd dropped us out completely we'd be tied for 30th instead of alone in 28th.

I fully expect the ND game to be put on a 6 day hold now...no chance it's Gameday, but maybe a 3:300 or 7ish kick.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Yeah, too much hype for the game and with the ticket price what it is, no way it's noon.

Ticket price has literally nothing to do with it. ESPN can put us in whichever slot they want, with no input from either party. If we lose to Duke and ND loses to Stanford, don't be surprised to see us at noon on ESPN2.
