OT: Week 4 Other Games

Not too thrilling of a week, but I'm still gonna watch.

My particular focus will be on how our future opponents perform this week.

Notre Dame @ Wake Forest might be sneaky good.

Boston College @ Purdue should be ok.

Pitt - unc; I don't expect much, but should show us what we're dealing with.

I think everything else will be a wash. (Predicting a uva win over Louisville though)

As far as non-con goes:

I think Stanford will beat Oregon, probably by a TD or two.

Arizona State @ Washington intrigued a lot until asu dropped the ball against SDSU.

What you Hokies watching?

I was expecting FAU-UCF to be a fun, exciting game, but I just went to ESPN.com to start the stream and saw that UCF got a pick-6 on the first possession and is already in the red zone again, less than halfway through the first.

Might tune into PSU-Illinois until it becomes a bloodbath, but Wazzou-USC might actually be good.

And wouldn't you know it, while I was typing this UCF scored. Oh well.

The Lane Train has been derailed. Please stand by.

May have spoken too soon, the Flying Kiffins are driving for a potential tying TD. Just converted 4th and 7.

Edit: looks like a UCF player might get ejected for targeting.

Guess I'll tune in.

TD FAU, didn't see the result of the targeting review.

All tied up

As for tomorrow, I'll have both ND@Wake and BC@Purdue running during the noon slot, I expect we'll learn a lot about both ND and BC in those games. Might tune into Louisville-UVA late if it's looking interesting, otherwise waiting for the 3:30 slot when ODU@VT will be on the big TV and FIU@Miami will be on the small one (wife and her friend that's coming over tomorrow are Canes). Almost tempted to set up an HDMI computer monitor next to them for the aTm-Bama game in case it's not over by halftime, but Mrs macraw83 would probably kill me. Aaaaaaaand I'm interested in seeing the result of the Kansas-Baylor game, if for no other reason than that it's probably the last game either team will win this season.

EDIT: Oh, and for the late slot, Stanford@Oregon should be good, and Sparty@Indiana has the potential to be a sneaky-good game. #Pac12AfterDark looks a bit underwhelming, though.

I'm rooting for lane to defeat the pseudo national champions.

Fugazy

I am rooting for the opposite.

#Back2BackNationalChamps

Well they are in the #AmericanPow6r Conference

Fugazy

Yeah, they've been running that campaign for the last few years. I don't agree with them, but more power to them. If that gains any traction I'll be surprised but happy for them.

I mean they are better than the Big Ten West.

Just can't get into Friday night college football. Friday nights during football season for me are best spent listening to local high school games on the radio. Love it.

You just have options now, enjoy your local high School football or watch some college games on TV. They have done a good job of improving the quality of Friday night games this year.

It's Time to go to Work

Oh totally agreed, there is great college football on Friday's now.

I just try to completely respect the full spectrum of the game. To me, there's something special about the bustle of finishing the workday on Friday to catch a high school game or hear it on the radio at 7. Especially the buildup of hype for the local school opening game rivalries all spring and summer long. The anticipation and finally that first season opening game. Then there's always the excitement of going back to your high school for a game in the fall.

Don't get me wrong: college football is the greatest sport ever. But Friday night lights are just special, and I personally just don't like detracting attention away from that. Thursday nights and Saturdays are for college.

Tbh, I wouldn't care if the NFL was ever on.

Well said on all points. Leggin it up.

I apparently have no idea what targeting is anymore. That seemed textbook to me.

And again in the USC game. What is even happening.

Illinois is making this game interesting. Would love to see them beat PSU.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

If PSU and OSU lose this weekend I would be happier.

That was fun while it lasted. Switching to WSU - USC.

And now the announcer says "that's the USC style I remember watching growing up, with Reggie Bush"

Yup, I'm old

I grew up watching Reggie Bush.

Who is announcing this game?

You're old? I remember watching Anthony Davis when he was the USC tailback for John McKay.

How about Mike Garrett?

Or OJ

Don't remember either in college, but remember them in the pros. Didn't start watching college until I was 9 or 10.

I remember them in college because my dad was in the Army and his family is from San Diego. Only SoCal teams that you ever saw in TV was USC. I was little at the time, but football was quite popular in my house and we were one of the only families around with an actual TV (when we got the 25" big screen it was a real game changer).

I didn't watch the pedo state game, but just checked the box score. What the hell happened in the 4th quarter? They put up more points in a quarter than we typically score in a whole game

Depth and talent happened. The game followed the typical anOSU/PSU vs the rest of the B1G script. Game is close for a half, maybe three quarters, then the flood gates open and the inferior team gets overwhelmed. anOSU/PSU runs up the score against a tired defense to impress the CFP committee.

Same thing happened against Pitt. Their opponent is able to hang tough for a while, but eventually they wear them down and immediately start opening it up. I was watching the game last night, expecting it to happen, and was still surprised by the efficiency with which they went from down 3 to up 11, then 18.

Well here goes the fun with espn app.. tried to watch Pitt unc and it's apparently blacked out in this area. As is lolUVA and UL..... stuck watching bc Purdue and uga mizzou......

Warning- Filter lost.

If you can, watch nd-wake.

Interesting to see wake's tempo vs nd's dline.

Notre Dame looks very... beatable. I just hope they take care of their business and we take care of ours.

A Hokie living in Tennessee.

I have 3 favorite teams. VT, Kentucky, and whoever the hell is playing Tennessee.

As much as I would like to see ND get beat like a red headed step-child every week. I hope their undefeated and flying so we can snatch their souls.

Rooting for ND, BC and Louisville in these early games

Fugazy

And so....now BC is 9/9 in the redzone this year. I don't care who you're playing, that's solid/lethal offense. Bravo, Scott L.

Flipping between Georgia-Mizzou, BC-Purdue, and Wake-ND for this noon slot.

Side note, I harp on this a lot, but ACC stadiums for the most part are so small and/or empty. The ACC's general commitment to football is laughable.

UNC is burning Pitt's DB's. It's like they were trash 3 years ago and they are still trash today. Who knew?

Wow Nebraska is AWFUL.

It's kind of funny to compare the fan/media reaction to both Willie Taggert and Scott Frost. Taggert is getting hammered and Frost is seemingly getting a mulligan. Both teams are complete rebuilds, but FSU has a ton of talent that Nebraska does not, but Nebraska has the coaching advantage. Imagine if Frost went to FSU and Taggert went to Nebraska.

Yep. There's a reason that each was "ranked" where they were in the preseason.

The talent difference is one thing. It helps that Frost has been pretty open about where his team is at. He comes across as someone who knows he inherited a bad situation and is working to fix it. By contrast, in interviews Taggert made it sound like he was blindsided by how bad FSU has played. Which is like... really dude you had no idea your team was this sloppy in practice? Just comes across that he doesn't know what he's doing.

Is it possible that NC A&T is good enough to content with Bama? I can't think of any other logical reason that they could dominate ECU, who dominated UNC who is currently dominating Pitt (well, maybe not dominate, but Pitt's D certainly can't stop them, right now).

Bc needs to get aj going

"I play real sports, not trying to be the best at exercising..." - KP

Anyone watching Purdue/BC?...Also, Winbush is out at QB for ND

No but I want to know what is going. Purdue up 2 touchdowns?

Purdue looks great vs BC. Last I checked total yards was 34-157 in Purdue's favor.

Basically Purdue is getting through BC's O line and making BC one dimensional...BC's QB still isn't all that imo

Watching a lot of these games right now thinking "Wow, the ACC IS TERRIBLE"

We really have an opportunity to step it up this season

VT '10, Born & Raised in the 804.
Rockin the Bakken.

This has to be the year where we make it through without losing that game to a lesser teams. The rest of the teams we play outside of ND and Miami are absolute shit

In spite of what we may be going on right now, I maintain that BC will still be a tough game. Duke looks like they can ball this year too.

But you're right UNC, Pitt, and GT look soft this year.

Yeah outside of Clemson, it's the most wide open the league has felt in a while.

Fugazy

It was awful last year too, Miami just lucked their way through a bunch of close games to make it feel closer. The ACC has been the "Free pass to the playoff" conference for Clemson last year and this year.

And Clemson looked . . . less than impressive last week against Georgia Southern. The final score was misleading.

Purdue is making it look easy versus BC. Really abusing the BC defensive backs.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Pretty sure we won't have to worry if BC will be ranked for our matchup

Boston College is ass.

BC is major league disappointing today

LOLUVA doing LOL things. Only saving grace for them is that UL's O is Rutgers level horrible.

Damn. Pitt had just under 300 yds of O in the 1st half? I was watching a lot of it and didn't realize that they'd done that.

poor Loeffler

VT '10, Born & Raised in the 804.

Their DC isn't have any better a day.

ND looks a lot better with a QB that connect on easy passes.

BC is just embarrassing themselves.

The LOLUVa-LOLouisville game is like watching hot garbage rot in the sun. Niether of these teams should be on television for the sake of the viewing public.

I was just about to comment on it - I'm not watching it but that there have been 9 points scored makes me LOL more that a little

I switch over every now and then. It's as bad as the score makes it look.

That was a hell of a pick by the BC lineman. Hopefully they can stop stepping on their own dicks and convert this into points.

Watching Pitt-UNC, I can see why Dazz Newsome was a VT recruiting target. He's having a good game and getting good separation from DB's.

Oh, and UNC ties it up at 28 all.

So the secret to beating BC is the same secret to beating GT. Get ahead early because their passing game is ass.

LOLUVa calls their QB the Thor-derback. It's like they are trying to embarrass themselves

It looks like UNC has even fewer fans in seats than what's been shown on social media, for pre-kick off.

Pitt-UNC is degenerating into the pillow fight that I expected.

At this point it is clear to me, regardless of preseason expectations, that a loss to any team on our schedule other than Notre Dame or Miami is completely and utterly unacceptable. None of these teams are good, except maybe Duke is okay.

So ready for the 330 block of games. This is the least entertaining 3.5 hrs of football this season

The Coastal is coming down to us and Miami. Nobody is going to convince me otherwise. The rest of the division is terrible.

L'vill is trash. I don't know how Petrino isn't on the hot seat after this one.

Is it football season yet?

Well, I was wrong about notre Dame wake Forest being a good game.

Mostly because I had over hyped Boston College's sorry asses. They look hapless out there.

But I did call for Uva to beat Louisville. They haven't looked good all year. And Uva looks improved.

Looks like the switch at QB was a smart decision for ND. Makes me a little more nervous they'll kick into another gear right in time for our game.

These Toledo game is mind numbing

What is CBSSN going to do with this garbage game that has 10 min left in it?

Clemson using that 5-man front isn't really working against GT. GT was driving but they have shot themselves in the foot.

Damn. Alabama on the board quick. Their offense is unbelievable with Tua in the game

This is the best Alabama team under Saban. They've never had an offense like this.

They look poised to curb stomp A&M team that should have beaten Clemson

Oregon's marching band keeps playing Stone Cold Steve Austin's theme song, lmao.

OU missed the game winning field goal.. overtime

what channel is this on? fox?

I tried to find it and the best I could come up with is an Oklahoma pregame article saying it was on some kind of pay per view platform hosted by Fox.

Crazy that a program like Oklahoma can't get one of their games on some kind of broadcast.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

So both Miami and Notre Dame benched their meh qbs and then went on to stomp their opponents I'm feeling less optimistic on our shot that them

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

We lost to a backup quarterback. Maybe they're onto something.

Let's Go

HOKIES

After watching Oregon choke tonight (they were 1 yard from going up 31-7 in the second half) I have concluded they are the Virginia Tech of the West Coast.

Both teams:
Have been playing football since the 1800s
Were irrelevant for most of the 20th century
Recently found success with coaches who could develop lesser talent
Became national powerhouses (and built a national brand) overnight in an era where that doesn't happen often
Made a national championship game and were very close to winning it
Have a pretty bad bowl record despite being highly ranked for most of them (both teams are 13-18 in bowls)
Consistently choke in the biggest games with everyone watching

The main difference now is that Oregon has Nike to bankroll them and we can barely keep pace with the middle of the ACC in donations.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

They also have an undersized* but very loud stadium.

*Relative to the Big Dogs™.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

They are extremely similar to VT, their best years were very similar to ours except we had great defense and they had great offense. They made two national championships, lost both, and had a little more high end success than us during their run. However, overall I think the comparison is solid.

Yeah, they definitely built momentum better than we did with the flashy offense, uniforms, etc. The way they choke in big games is just so similar to VT. I felt like I was watching the Hokies tonight when Oregon fumbled twice on the 1 yard line during the biggest game of their season.
