Zion Williamson out against UNC

Interesting tweet by an orthopedic surgeon watching the game:

Given we need all the help we can get, it makes the Duke game more winnable...obviously hope Zion is OK.

Damn all those peeps paid $3k for Zion and now this.

Hate it for Zion though, poor guy lasted 33 seconds in the biggest game of his career. Hopefully he's back for the NCAA's, I love watching him.

There were reports that at least some tickets sold over $10K for the game. They got about $350 worth of their money.

If I'm him I sit it all out after that scare

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

People paid how much to see this game?

Minimum value an hour before the game was $1800

Earlier in the day it spiked at $2800

Yeah, I heard prior to game-day that prices were even higher than that.

Yeah, I hope he's alright.

Terrible look for Nike.

I'm guessing he won't be signing with Nike after this year!

Yeah, that was my thought on watching the sneaker disintegrate on TV.

Listening to the Duke fans acting like they're a worthless team cause Zions out like they've got no good players is golden

So the gReAtEsT gAmE oF tHe YeAr is shaping up to be a blowout, while the two current bottomfeeders of the conference are locked in a pretty decent game.

So how much trouble does Nike get into because of this?

I would be shocked if Zion plays again this year. Even if he's totally fine after this, he's already so proven at the college level and SO marketable that I just imagine him not risking anything after this scare and getting ready for the draft.

I'd like to be wrong though because even though I hate Duke college basketball is better this year with him in it.

You must haven't heard a single Zion interview. If nothing is torn in his knee, he'll play again this season....he isn't selfish and he wants to win a championship....being that I hate Duke more than any team not named Kentucky, I hope Zion takes your advice....

Yeah these kids just love playing basketball. He'll play if he can.

I'll believe it when I see it. It's easy to say things like that before you're actually faced with the situation he's in now.

I'm sure Nike will make it up to him when he signs with them this summer.

I think you spin it to make a new Zion-proof shoe for elite basketball competition. If you want to be the best college freshman in a generation, you need this shoe

Shouldn't be in college anyway. Should've been able to enter the draft out of High School. Here's to hoping he gets better and sits out the rest of the season.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Hate to hear it for the kid. He's a special talent. It's unfortunate that the way the system is architected he didn't have the opportunity to go straight from high school to the NBA.

I respect his decision either way, but in his shoes (no pun intended), there's no chance I'd suit up for Duke again.

As an architect, I've always thought that there should be a verb meaning "to architect" but, now that I see it used to describe how the NCAA rigged something, I hate it.

Archimatected
Designed. Yep. Designed.

Compromise might be to hold out until the tournament.

When Zion tells Coach K he's done for the year

Watching the college basketball writers melting down this morning in backlash over the thought that Zion shouldn't play anymore to protect his value has been extremely enjoyable. Doug Gottlieb went the extra mile, too...

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

What the F would Doug Gottlieb know about being a player with NBA aspirations and potential?

I mean, I'm sure he had all sorts of NBA aspirations, and at one time probably thought he could make them happen. Still doesn't qualify him to comment in this case, where a consensus top NBA prospect is debating whether to risk his potential NBA career by rushing back from an injury to chase an NCAA championship.

He knows a lot about stealing credit cards as a college kid.

is this the guy who had his shorts on backwards that one time?

I don't think yall understand that kids just want to play basketball and that money is not every thing in the world

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

Its easy to say they don't care about money and they're just doing it for the love of the game when they're being prevented from actually being able to earn money off the game.

Give them a legitimate opportunity to make money off basketball, and see how many turn it down. Especially when you're talking about money that would legitimately change the lives of not just themselves, but any and all of their loved ones.

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

Right but they are just doing it for the love of the game right now. They haven't really tasted the money that comes with it yet, so all they know is playing basketball because they love it. Especially a guy like Zion, I'd be shocked if he chooses to not play if he's healthy and capable of playing.

The sole reason why I am not in the NBA right now is back in 4th grade, I butted heads with another kid in a rec-league game. I was never the same afterwards and should have sat out until I was 18 and could have been drafted. But i decided to keep playing, and it substantially lowered my draft stock.

The sole reason why I am not in the NBA right now is my 6" vertical. Well, that, and I'm 58.

He has only not tasted the money because the NBA has barred it. The game ticket prices for Duke v UNC only put the exclamation point on the players case that these guys should be able to go pro or deserve the chance to benefit from their likeness at a min. People were not paying $3,000 a ticket to see Duke or UNC, they were paying $3,000 a ticket to see Zion and he doesn't see a dime.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

did you mean they weren't paying to see Duke or UNC?

Tell that to Isaiah Thomas.

Why not both? A talent like Zion should be playing basketball, and making money, in the NBA.

I agree, I'm responding to those who believe he should sit out the rest of the season even if he's healthy. Because if he's healthy in college, then he obviously can't have both.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

I would have zero issue if Zion decided to sit the remainder of the season. Lets not forget that he did in fact sustain an injury, no matter how mild of a sprain it may be according to Coach K.

Beating UNC is nice.
Winning the ACC is great.
A national title is a memory forever.

Know what's better than all of those things? Generational wealth, multimillion dollar marketing deals, and being a #1 pick and achieving your dream of playing in the NBA. ( I assume at least, I got pretty jazzed just winning intramural flag football tournys)

Parties at the GOAT house are nothing compared to National Champions parties at the goat house.

He probably should have locked himself in a padded room when he turned 16. /s

He has a great life right now. Basketball is not that dangerous of a sport. If the doctors say he is healthy then He should play the game and have fun.

"The Cup is going nowhere MIkey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I'm convinced we can beat Duke without Zion. UVA beat us from beyond the arc, Duke won't do that, Duke wants to get into the paint and to the rim. If we can play defense as well as we did against to hooboo's and can knock down shots we can win.

74-54

If we can knock down shots, yes. If we go 3-for-28 again, no.

That kid is gonna get paid either way. He is an instant money maker at this point for just having him on the roster. He will be set for life with a massive shoe deal, commercial deal. His talent level of just freak athletics may be at a Bo Jackson following. Never going to be the best player to ever play but damn if you miss seeing him do something special any chance you can.

It's up to the kid but I'd take my time and come back if they get an easy bracket.

Wagon's full and Momma I'm coming home.

In completely unrelated news, Coach K has announced he will sit out the rest of the season with a back injury /s

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Even better:
Coach K has announced he will sit out the rest of the season...so he doesn't risk getting a back injury which would jeopardize the coaching salary he would earn next year.

"The Cup is going nowhere MIkey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I don't really see the controversy about him playing or not. It's not like basketball injuries are this foreign thing and Zion is the first college player to ever get hurt. He knew it was a possibility going in. IF he returns to full health he 100% should play because

(a) He made a commitment to his university to play. Backing out partway through the season is simply the wrong thing to do if he is at full health.
(b) He could have gone and made a million bucks playing in China or somewhere instead
(c) Duke reportedly took out an insurance policy for him, that will give Zion $8 million if he somehow falls out of the NBA draft top 16

That said, the NBA should probably get rid of the rule that you have to be a year removed from high school to play regardless.

Duke reportedly took out an insurance policy for him, that will give Zion $8 million if he somehow falls out of the NBA draft top 16

Uh... wouldn't that clearly be an impermissible benefit?

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I think I've heard about schools covering insurance policies for exceptional players in the past. Not sure how it fits in with the NCAA guidelines though.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Is it really a benefit if it never comes to fruition? He will be in the top 16.

I take it you've never paid an insurance bill.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

It's something the NCAA started allowing a few years ago in football, presumably in an attempt to keep more star power in college instead of losing everyone to the NFL. Not sure it extends to basketball, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. I imagine there are a number of restrictions to it (ie, only covers drop in draft stock due to injury, payout cap is probably based on some metric of "projected draft stock" at time of taking out the policy, etc)

I just hope that if for whatever reason he does decide to shut it down, nobody makes excuses if Duke doesn't win it all. They still have two potential top five picks, and loads of talent around Barrett and Reddish as well.

We've been playing without our best player for awhile now, and nobody is making any excuses for us. Duke should be treated no differently, but I'm sure they will.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

How will the media circus keep spinning if it doesn't talk about Duke bball?

But I think this might actually give us a shot to beat them, keeps Kerry with a higher chance of keep out of foul trouble and Reddish is the only player that scares me with his length. Gotta make him shot threes. Barrett will get his twenty but we have a plethora of 6-5 guards to match up with him.

UNC scored 62(!) Points in the paint against them last night.

Blackshear and Horne have to be licking their chops if Zion stays out

"I regret nothing. The end." - Ron Swanson

There is no way in hell Duke should be championship favorites if Zion is somehow out for the year. Without Zion, they are probably the 3rd best team in the ACC. Recruiting stars and NBA prospects don't mean anything in college ball and in March Madness.

I (selfishly) hopes he plays the rest of the season because he is awesome to watch. Buttt, If I were him I would absolutely sit out the rest of the season. Why risk generational wealth for one college basketball season that you play without pay?

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

Zion needs to sign a contract with K-Swiss when he's done at Duke

British Knights all the way. Zion in BK's.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Zion will be back...I think a lot of people are over reacting to a mild, not contact, shoe related injury.

If medically cleared, sitting out the rest of the season won't preserve him or be any safer than the arduous off season work outs, drills, etc. that he'll be doing to prepare for the NBA.

Mind you, this is assuming it's just a mild strain, with no tearing, and no medical reason why playing would cause further injury.

If sitting a few games/weeks is all he needs to get healthy and be safe, you'll see a well rested Zion in the ACC Tourney.

If this was football, that's a different story
