Is this the biggest regular season game in Hokie Hoops history?

With the 2nd top-10matchup in school history, against an instate rival, this game has my vote.
The only other comparable game is Umass 95'-96' season, with a top-10 matchup in Cassel.

Mmmmnnnnnn kinda. Meh. I dunno. I'm not really ready to sign off on it just yet. We've had some whoppers in days past, so I'm not too sure.

#1 Duke at home in 2010-2011 is up there, but the result is diminished by the season's outcome.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

weren't 4 lokos banned around that time ?

generally speaking, the most important games are the ones that are must watch games nationally

This one isn't even a full regional broadcast

Sad part is I think this would be a national must-watch if it were an option.

I echo your sentiment: #GoACC

I think the story of this broadcast is proof that must watch=/=national TV

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

This is a nationally must watch game. It's not being broadcast as such, but it is the biggest conference game of the season so far in any conference.

If we win, yes.

Fuck UVa.

Leonard. Duh.

This is the third thread in a row I've read where this is the last comment. Kudos for consistency, sir.

This.

Thanks again for keeping us focused Leonard.

If we win? Sure, yeah, it's definitely up there.

If we lose? UNC will be a more important game.

It's a BIG game, yes. But biggest in history...meh. Reason why, even if we lose this game, we're top 15 in the country. We have a good team. We don't need to prove to people we are legit this year...we are. The previous time we were in the top 10 we were ranked 22 in the preseason and had to work our way up to #8. Losing to #1 UMass wasn't necessarily defining for the season, but kinda showed we weren't there...

Big games are for when you have a chip on your shoulders and something to prove. This team CAN win, HAS won, and WILL win. Sit back, grab a cold one, and enjoy the show tonight. No matter the outcome this is not the end of the road for these HOKIES.

We don't need to prove to people we are legit this year...we are

Our best win is over Purdue and we lost to a 7 win Penn State team so I would argue that we still do need to prove to the majority of the public.

At the time, the day we beat Memphis State right after they were ranked #1 was for sure. As for now, maybe the UVA game is more important, but anyone who was at that game will never forget it and how most of those in attendance refused to leave the Cassell until they'd cheered and clapped after the game long enough for some of the players to have time to shower, dress and return to the floor to acknowledge the fans.

Duh. Sports powerhouse. We're going to hire their head football coach to be our new OC.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

It was Memphis State until 1994.

Old Hokies unite!

Huge game and no one can convince me that there has been a better atmosphere at the Cassell.

Having been there for some really big games in the day, I can attest to your statement. Best I ever experienced. The old Metro had some good players, and we didn't need no stinkin' ACC to bring basketball to the Cassell faithful.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I'm not doubting this at all. But by far the best atmosphere I've ever experienced not just in basketball, but all of VT sports, was the Maryland @ VT game in 2007. We were ranked at the time, unbeaten at home and had Maryland coming into town. Ended up being awful weather, with it nearly impossible to get to campus, so they opened the doors to all students for free, and the students packed it to the rafters. 10k students going absolutely nuts for 45 minutes (Went to OT) in Cassell was an experience to behold.

This was for the opening tip, to give some perspective on what I'm referencing

I know it wasn't regular season, but this might be one of my top moments, and prob tops for bball in Cassell.

Fun fact: I dated Travis' first cousin once removed in high school.

Marshall University student.
Virginia Tech fanatic.

I was there.... can attest to the shit show. Great atmosphere. Absolutely wore down Greivis Vásquez with endless hazing.

I don't understand how the ticketing works exactly....but I would love to see all unclaimed/un-bought tickets for any game distributed first come, first serve to students willing to stand in line and wait.

Even if it takes place at half time, any remaining open seats should be given away to promote having a full Cassell when we may need that extra boost for the team.

Oh indeed. Vazquez and Virginia Tech had a truly magnificent love/hate relationship between 2007-2010. For four years we booed and harassed him every single time he touched the ball and he absolutely loved it. The last time he played at Cassell he went off for like 40 points and beat us in double overtime. I think Maryland going to the Big 10 has caused his name to lose a bit of its weight, but if you followed ACC ball in the late 2000's, you know this dude was a killer.

This, i was there. Town went nuts after the game as well. Great night!
Another game that is close rival to this was the 3 OT game vs Louisville which we won on a last second Calvin Oldham (sp) tip-in. That game and party in town afterwards was insane. The noise level in Cassell was off the charts.

With what Buzz has done to this team, I would hope games like this (UVA, Duke, UNC, etc) become the norm, rather than "big".

Eh...

I don't consider it a huge game just because of the ranks involved. There's really not much on the line at the moment. I feel like we've had bigger games where we had a tournament bid at stake in which we've upset some pretty highly ranked teams.

Put this game at the end of the season, winner take all for a regular season Conference Championship, and possible #1 NCAA Tournament seed, then I would have to say yes.

This game is just another step in the progress made since Buzz arrived. Like it or not, Virginia is a Top-10 program right now. They weren't before Bennett arrived, not even close. Tonight will hopefully show that we are on our way to being one as well. It's mid-January so there's a whole lot of basketball left so I won't lose sleep if we lose tonight, as long as we don't get blown out. I think we have a good shot at a W. We aren't expected to win this game and as others have said, we really have nothing to lose (no injuries). Buzz has a great scheme for them so let's cheer on our Hokies, hope for the best, and either way, we're going to have an amazing season! LET'S GO!!!!

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

Too early in the season for it to be the biggest game ever. This can be a statement game, though.

I'd love to see a win here, but the real big games will come later.

Was there a game?

If the players don't even show up to the game then I can't call it the biggest game in VT history

UPDATE:

I sure as hell hope not

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

It's not. This will be on the floor somewhere when VT plays in it's biggest game...

Until then, enjoy the ride. Might not be a smooth one, but trust in Buzz.
