2019 ACC Football Recruiting Breakdown: Boston College

I got some requests via Twitter to look into the 2019 recruiting classes for ACC teams (hit me up @Sam_TKP), and thought I'd give a quick summary here. I'l focus mostly on what the teams needed to fill roster wise, so this won't be solely rankings based analysis. I'll also try to frame it for certain schools (a good recruiting year for Wake looks way different than a good year for FSU, for instance). Interested to see what y'all think about some of the players Tech's foes are adding this offseason.

We'll just go alphabetically, and I'll try to do one every week or so.

Here we go! BC you're up first.

2019 Class:
ACC Rank: 13
Top Recruit: Patrick Garwo, RB, Fairless Hills PA
Biggest Need: Offensive Line

Stop me if you've seen this narrative before, but BC is going into the spring with a veteran offensive line and workhorse running back. It's an annual blessing of a lovely, ground and pound football game in late October. It's like the fall version of tax day in Blacksburg. But in seriousness, it's a good job by Steve Adazio to make sure he has the depth to run a gruesome offense like that. The Eagles added two classic BC linemen in this class: Jack Conley (6'7" 289) and Blerim Rustemi (6'4" 275). Those guys are gonna get in the weight room for the next 2 years, and be monsters for that running game. Garwo is a classic power runner. Short, thick, and just shifty enough to avoid tacklers at the second level.

Most Exciting Recruit: Sam Johnson, QB, Walled Lake MI

Johnson enrolled this spring, which is a huge advantage. He's a pocket passer with a cannon for an arm. He and R-Freshman Matt McDonald will most likely be fighting for the backup spot behind Anthony Brown. Johnson's the top QB recruit to land in Chestnut Hill since 2010, and the second highest rated all time.

Early Contributor(s): Spencer Bono, DE, Cincinnati OH and Izaiah Henderson, DL, Middletown NJ

Bono is the kind of quick, lanky pass rushing DE that's the perfect complement to BC's history of strong secondary play. At 6'4" 235, Bono has the skills to make an impact as a third down pass rusher in his first year. Henderson, on the contrary, has been moved from his recruited DE position to DT. At 6'4" 265 already, Henderson just projects better there. BC lost a lot of talent on the Defensive Line, including 3 starters.

Sam's Grade: B
BC did what it always does, they got "a bunch of guys, being dudes." They reloaded on the Offensive Line, added a power back, but continue to be a defensively lopsided roster. Boston College just can't get the weapons needed to really compete in the ACC Atlantic (in a normal year). BC was 11th in total offense in the ACC last season. They ranked 10th in passing offense and a pretty average 7th in rushing. Actually, the Hokies averaged 0.3 yards per carry more than the Eagles last season. Adazio needs to find some kind of offensive weapons if they're gonna compete. But for now, playing in the ServPro First Responders Bowl seems like...oh wait, they didn't play that game? Shoot.
