Key DB target just decommitted from FSU. Was at VT for a visit during the UNC game. 904 gave us the scoop he wasn't solid with FSU. Think we have a real shot here. Current VT WR commit Tyree Saunders has already reached out to him on Twitter.

Wins the name game and a position of need.

Edit: Also, nice anticipation of the Taggart firing.

decommited before the taggert news. was at FSU for visit last weekend announced decommitment right after the game. I talked to him on Thursday of last week. has an official with VT scheduled in a couple weeks. will be back up at Wake game this weekend with me. He and his dad been in contact with coach Mitchell A LOT since UNC game.

Jugs has hinted that we might well have a new one after this season.

To keep it relevant to recruiting for the purposes of this thread, a new OC could potentially give us a boost for the 2021 class or a key late 2020 addition. The promise of a new offense usually makes for an easier sell.

That'd be great. I mean at this point I'll take a Generation Z kid who know his way around some Madden plays...

Valdosta has a really good program but a pro style QB for our program?

Side note...if you ever have to travel to or stop over in Valdosta in the fall, may sure to check against their football schedule. I made that mistake this year when and they were playing a team from Miami. The traffic was rough and the whole town was packed.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, having a "dual threat" QB is not nearly as important as being able to make the right reads in the option game in Fuente's offense. Yeah, you can't be a complete statue, but Dalton and Lynch were probably the two best to ever do it, and neither of them were above average athletes back there.

This^^.

The currently popular narrative in VT fan circles that a dual-threat QB is necessary to run the Fuente/Corny system is really just rationalizing fan delusion over Willis last year in spite of his obvious liabilities with both the run AND pass games.

There is little reason the Fuente/Corny system can't be tweaked to accommodate someone who is more of a pro-style QB if the QB is simply able to make the right reads on enough occasions to keep defenses off-balance.

Hooker himself is/was seen as a pro-style according to 247.

And Rodemaker is listed as a Dual-Threat on ESPN Rankings and is listed to have a 4.63 forty, which isn't something to sneeze at. If he decides to join I will be excited, but the thought getting Davis in the '21 class is incredibly exciting.

I somewhat disagree. A true "pro-style" QB wouldn't really be a fit in this offense, if by pro-style you mean going through multiple progressions and a complex passing game. This offense is not that. The routes are relatively simple and we don't ask the QBs to go through tons of progressions. This is a very conservative/risk-averse spread option/RPO offense.

I think what we really mean is can this offense sustain itself with a QB who is not a run threat vs one who is a threat. If a relatively non-athletic QB can make the right reads in the RPOs, yes I think he could be successful in this scheme. But, I think it really limits what the offense is capable of and takes a potential threat off the field. I think in that instance you get a Josh Jackson who is more of a game manager and not a game changer.

So yes, we could implement a QB who isn't the most athletic in the run game if he can execute the reads. However, the offense is significantly more dynamic and has more dimension if we have a QB with some wheels (Evans, Hooker).

I disagree with your disagreement. A pro style QB can be successful in any system - that's why they're so highly sought after by pro teams and why they're so rare. A tall guy who can move in the pocket go through progressions read defenses and make strong accurate throws wins a lot at any level of football and at any school.

A pro style QB can be successful in any system

They're called pro style qb's not any style qb's

I, for one, would have loved to see Peyton Manning run the same offense as rookie year RG3

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

A true "pro-style" QB wouldn't really be a fit in this offense, if by pro-style you mean going through multiple progressions and a complex passing game. This offense is not that.

Towards the end of Jerod's career, we saw him starting to go through progressions (one play in particular against UVA stands out). My guess is it's something that the staff would love to implement if they can get a QB who is mature enough to handle it.

I think what we really mean is can this offense sustain itself with a QB who is not a run threat vs one who is a threat. If a relatively non-athletic QB can make the right reads in the RPOs, yes I think he could be successful in this scheme. So yes, we could implement a QB who isn't the most athletic in the run game if he can execute the reads.

The bold is where I disagree. I think that we need the RPO as a means to move the chains. While it's great to have someone like HH who can bust a 20 yard run off an RPO, I think this offense would be equally effective with someone who could consistently get 4 yards off an RPO, but was an accurate pocket passer, and able to read defenses.

Twitter me

But does being a run threat and an accurate passer have to be mutually exclusive? In an ideal world, I want someone who is a dynamic athlete and can make things happen with his legs and who can also throw the ball accurately downfield. I definitely agree that the offense can work with a passer who isn't the most explosive on the ground, but I think it's overall better and more difficult to predict and stop when you have someone who is. Obviously I agree that someone who is a total run threat but not as proficient in the pass game greatly limits the offense, basically where QP is in his development right now.

I think a lot of the staff's intrigue with Willis had a lot to do with his potential if he could put it all together. He's not a bad athlete and has a very live arm. The problem is, as Chris Coleman mentioned on a TSL podcast, the only thing he can really do with consistency is throw bombs. And that can't be your entire offense. Hooker right now is the best of both worlds passing and running. And I think his presence as a credible run threat has helped the run game open up tremendously (like the one McClease TD against Wake where he basically went in untouched because the D was keying on Hooker).

But does being a run threat and an accurate passer have to be mutually exclusive?

It doesn't; I'm just saying that this offense could function perfectly find with someone who is not a big run threat, but is an accurate passer.

I definitely agree that the offense can work with a passer who isn't the most explosive on the ground, but I think it's overall better and more difficult to predict and stop when you have someone who is.

Doesn't this hold true for any offense? An athletic/mobile QB is an advantage in any offense, even if the offense isn't designed around the QB run (see Vick in Andy Reid's west coast offense at Philly).

I think a lot of the staff's intrigue with Willis had a lot to do with his potential if he could put it all together. He's not a bad athlete and has a very live arm.

I think the staff's intrigue with Willis probably had a variety of factors:

  • The expectation that the OL (and thus running game) would be improved due to Hoffman playing
  • The expectation that our WR's would be the strength of this team (they still are, but for a lot of the season Tre or Haz were injured)
  • The expectation that Willis would actually put it all together
  • The fact that Hooker was injured preseason

Twitter me

People seem to forget Josh Jackson was a freshman for most of his time at QB at VT. The playbook was certainly much more open with him than for, say, Patterson - and he had much less talent around him.

The Fuente system can work just fine with a QB who doesn't have great wheels, but knows how to read his keys in the run game properly, quickly and decisively when necessary.

Yep, and now look at how bad he is at UMD

There is little reason the Fuente/Corny system can't be tweaked to accommodate someone who is more of a pro-style QB

Which is why it was so frustrating to see Cornelsen refuse to adapt the offense to fit the skill set of Willis and the dynamic receiving Corp.

A pro style QB could work, I just have no faith in the coaching staff's ability to effectively implement the changes needed to field a successful offense led by a pro style QB.

Willis is not a good pro style quarterback. He doesn't go through progressions and reads well. He is a drop back passer. But if the first option is covered, he struggles after that. He excels at 1 reads, quick passes involving back shoulder fades and jump balls. When it comes to the second or third option, he starts forcing the ball which is the reason for the turnovers

There's really no adapting to a guy who can't run the RPO/Zone Read and who only looks at a single WR. I don't blame Corny for not being able to adapt to Willis, I blame Corny for not recognizing what HH brings to the table.

Is it basketball season yet?

There's really no adapting to a guy who can't run the RPO/Zone Read and who only looks at a single WR

Cornelsen didnt even try. The passing scheme hasn't changed with Hooker in. Cornelsen just wasnt Interested in moving toward a more complex passing scheme.

Hooker is a better QB than Willis. But if this staff decides they want to roll with another pocket QB they will fail if the take the same approach that they did with Willis

Willis more often than not failed in decision making. How often did we see open guys and he throws into double coverage. I don't think he is a great example of what a pocket passer could look like in the system.

The first rule of Fight Club is we don't talk about turkey leg votes

Correct. Willis has just as good straight line speed as Hooker does. Hooker is just able to make the correct reads, which makes the offense hum

Is this true? Do we have their 40 times somewhere? That would surprise me, but I am very intrigued (if you're not just eye test making this up)

Heard Willis beat Hooker in 40yd dash in fall camp IIRC

Eye test says he is faster than UVAs secondary.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

You ever hear those stories where in times of crisis, people show superhuman strength? Like lifting cars and stuff like that? I'm convinced that's what happened here. Willis was running with the fear of God in him.

The linemen were only a step behind. Blanding was just slow I think.

The first rule of Fight Club is we don't talk about turkey leg votes

It looks like Willis runs 60ish yards in 6ish seconds. Maybe not track speed, but dude was moving pretty quick.

According to ESPN Hooker's 40 was 4.96, and according to 247 Willis's was 4.72

Wow! Very surprised...when are those times from, though? Kudos for the info, but I'm guessing those numbers were pulled from sometime in high school? In addition to maturing, those high school 40 times often are not laser timed.

When I played soccer (I know, different circumstances, football is taken much more seriously with this kind of stuff) in high school we did our 40 times, and someone that I would beat in a race 150 out of 100 times somehow "ran a faster" 40 than me lol 😂

I'm not saying they're 100% accurate, no idea where the info comes from. But that being said, it shows they're at the very least in the same ballpark. Hooker just makes the correct reads and therefore looks like he's the faster/more dynamic player. Shows that you don't need the fastest guy, just the guy who's going to run the offense *correctly*.

Couldn't agree more.

I wish VT athletics had this info, maybe something they could provide to Hokie Club Members? Donate a certain amount and get a booklet of player profiles with interesting measurables like this that come from Spring practices or something? Value add, I'd donate for that info alone, and it's probably something they have anyway...

The passing scheme hasn't changed with Hooker in

Come on man. It was obvious to me that it had, then French pointed it out.

Is it basketball season yet?

the system probably hasn't changed since Andy Dalton ran it. The play calls change every game.

For instance QP threw downfield almost exclusively against Notre Dame while Hooker dinked and dunked all night against Wake - didn't throw a pass that would have been caught 20+ yards downfield. Part of that is the different overages being run by those teams and part of it is Cornelsen calling plays to take advantage of those overages' weak spots.

There's been times with Willis that we may have run 4 verts against cover 2 off man because Willis could make the back shoulder / fade throw with consistency, but we're not calling those plays with Hooker because his fade needs a lot of work.

We're probably getting into semantics at this point. Maybe the system itself hasn't changed, but major portions of the scheme have.

Peace.

Is it basketball season yet?

The problem wasn't adapting the system to Willis. The problem was any system with Willis was going to be pretty limited because he is pretty limited.

He has a good arm and throws fades well and slants solidly, but otherwise doesn't read pass defenses well if they are in the least bit tricky, he was a coin toss with reading run keys and his internal clock in the pocket was almost Glennon-level challenged. No system can really adapt to that.

Agree completely with the assessment on Willis's skill set.

So why field an offense that relied on him to make so many reads in both the run game and short passing game? A more vertical approach, relying on intermediate routes to combat off coverage instead of RPOs made more sense. Having him push the ball down the field was riskier on a play by play basis, but less risky on a drive by drive basis.

Willis Was never going to be the 15-play game manager, why ask him to RPO down the field?

I think you have a higher degree of confidence that Willis could canvas the field in a more complex passing structure than I do.

Second point, how much time can a college program dedicate to changing the entire offense for a guy that was a stop gap quarterback? I assume time constraints are a real factor, but I honestly don't know.

The first rule of Fight Club is we don't talk about turkey leg votes

Any news on...
Gary Smith? DT/OT?
How do we feel about recent offer Justin Beadles, DE# from GA?
How do we feel about recent John Blunt, CB, Juco from Texas? Obligatory...".if he signs with us its gonna be LIT"
I could offer analysis since I watched film but I work in the medical field. I suppose if they had a rash or high blood pressure I could offer relevant info, but picking out a sleeper from high school film is not my forte.
This feels like the time of year when we start picking off decent kids from other programs for one reason or another.
Also, have heard some faint scuttlebutt regarding VA kids (RB specifically) on PState and FSU rosters who may be looking to transfer. Any legs to this or is this just O and M dreaming?

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

I think we would happily take Laborn or Slade, but I don't know if that is a realistic option yet.

Heard more legs about Ford then Slade, I don't see either one coming to Tech even if they did transfer, however I would gladly eat crow on that, Laborn on the other hand if he were to transfer we may have a decent shot but I feel like he's one of the players that may not fully live up to his expectations coming out of high school

Go for it

He had that nasty injury last season too. I haven't watched much FSU this year, so I'm not sure how he's looked pre and post injury. Could also be a factor in him not fully meeting expectations.

I'd prefer Ford to Slade, but I was basing that off Ford getting more run than Slade currently. Slade's been getting not so many carries, and when he does get them, he's gotten a lot of low quality ones in situations where he's unlikely to have much room to operate.

The kid looked like a beast when he actually got in the game. His problem is that he had Akers in front of him (he should have realized that when he signed with FSU).

Ford, Slade, Laborn all welcome to jump aboard.

Personally I would be against it. I don't think we should accept these sloppy seconds after the "big dogs" chewed them up and spit them out. Pretty big slap in the face to the kids that chose to be Hokies

just watched his highlight film. good grief...there is some major upside to just about everything the kid does. from pocket presence to keeping his eyes downfield. Also looks really poised. Looks like he runs a comparable offense to VT too. What a major Get if he commits.

Overheard as Duke assistant coaches took elevator down from press box: “Guys, they stopped the run with a three-man front.” - David Teel Tweet 2018

I'm cautious anytime it's this far out, but he seems perfect for our offense. Also would be huge to pull a North Shore recruit, that school has crazy talent and are a legit Texas powerhouse in Houston.

This guy would be like Tyrod 2.0. I'm sure they've probably already mentioned that to him but would be an AMAZING get.

I was thinking more Trevone Boykin style, but I'd prefer Tyrod 2.0 for sure.

I think we could do much worse.

I took from the Jalen Hoyle article that the staff has told him that JHam will be here next year (he mentioned his good relationship with JHam and Fuente). Now I could be totally wrong there, but position coach can be more important than coordinator to players so that's what I'm going with.

Yea, I took that too. I like the DBs we are picking up right now and the ones currently on the team. Hard hitting, very long DBs. Give me all the DBU guys!

However, this is... quite confusing. We're up to 4 RB commits in a small class and have McClease, King, Gary, Steward, Holston, Wheatley and Beck with additional eligibility. Also with a rumor that another RB rated higher than all the rest is a possibility.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Been rumored for a while that 1 "commit" won't be there. Brunson also may not qualify - may be one in the same. This is a good move as it spreads out the roster a bit in a position that we are desperately thin.

The RB numbers suggest expected attrition both in the recruiting class and on the current roster.

Could Cole Beck be one of them? Seems like he might have a legit future in track which I would understand.

He had a hell of a track season last year, and I would like to think his scholarship does not count on the football team??? So, he can stay on the roster. Steward getting passed by King and Gary, maybe he leaves? But I hear he loves Blacksburg, so all speculation at this point

At this point, the staff has to be fully committed to the bit that no commit for 2020 can have any other meaningful P5 offers. It's really impressive when you think about it.

I am going to take guess and say that Bud retiring and Fuente being on the "hotseat" has a lot to do with the program being unable to sign top talent this year. Hoping we end the regular season with three more wins to reach 9-3, a coastal crown, and a chance to impress some of the December decisions by undecided recruits.

VTCC '86 Delta Company, Hokie in Peru, TKPC#490, One of us!

I agree, but the closer this team gets to 9-10 wins, the less excusable an 86th ranked and dead last in the ACC class becomes.

Zero percent chance this class will be ranked high based on the calculation and numbers. No matter who we recruit this year is gonna not make people happy based on what will be publicized.

This class is all about adding depth and a few pieces where we need numbers and some quality players/kids. I would be more concerned with how next year's class is ranked as that will be more important as it will be a full class.

My problem isn't with the class not being ranked high. I think 80th is a little much, but a top 50 class would make sense. I understand that we can't take a large class.

My problem is that the current 11 commits combine for 25 P5 offers per 247. Derrell Bailey Jr. alone accounts for 16 of those offers. So, without him, the remaining ten commits have a total of nine P5 offers. You either have to believe that Fuente and Co. are smarter than everyone else in their evaluations, or that the incoming class is not necessarily up to the standards of ACC play, a problem that derailed this program in the later stage Beamer years. This becomes especially problematic when you see that this team needs help at key positions like DE, CB, HB, and there don't appear to be any incoming top 300 talents to plug and play there their first year.

So then; are they just accepting any immediate commit and not holding out for talented players that are more likely to make that immediate impact?

And then are they not prepared to capitalize on this year's overachieving results, where Tech is poised to possibly win 10 with a bowl?

And then we are supposed to believe that 2021 is REALLY where they'll finally make their recruiting mark, with large scale coaching turnover?

My point is, the current trajectory of VT recruiting looks like a program on the downslide. I firmly believe that that isn't us at this point, and I'd like to have a coaching staff that can capitalize on that momentum.

Our roster is filled with freshman and sophomores playing lots of minutes at every position. Many were highly recruited players. It's really hard to call this year's class a trajectory when the past 2-3 classes have been quite good compared to most of VTs classes in the past 15 years.

when the past 2-3 classes have been quite good compared to equally as good as most of VTs classes in the past 15 years.

It's been discussed ad nauseam (mostly by Clemson Chris), but there are way more 4 and 5 stars now than ever before. If you go by the numerical recruit ranking, you see that Fuente's classes for 2017-2019 are about the same level Beamer recruited at from 2005ish through 2015.

I think JPCVT's criticisms are valid. I get that there's limited playing time THIS SEASON, but other schools are able to recruit around that. Perhaps Foster's departure (and the unknown status of his contract in the seasons leading up to this year) is a greater challenge than original expected.

At the end of the day, Fuente has not prioritized recruiting to the degree that fans were led to believe he would based on his early press conferences/comments. Perhaps he's handcuffed by administrative challenges, limited funds, etc, but I really hope his offseason hires address the programs recruiting weakness.

Edit to add: I don't think one season of exceeding expectations will change the recruiting class that much. Based on comments from 904, and just watching recruiting from afar for years, one season doesn't seem to make or break a recruiting class. No kid is going to flip from UNC to VT because VT won 3 more games this season; they'll do it because of a relationship with a coach, or NFL possibilities/schematic fit, etc.

Clemson Chris made me throw up in my mouth a little bit, but I have to admit it is an effective way to make sure everyone knows you're talking about me haha.

Not sure how you can claim downward slide with one class that is the smallest by >50% with 3 straight larger classes around top 25. Trajectory implies a trend. Most of the players playing are the young talent in previous classes.

The trajectory will be determined at how the 2017-2019 classes develop, how we do in 2020 with the small class and ultimately can we win and catapult that into a special 2021 class.

I'm sure plenty are still celebrating, but if anyone gets a chance tomorrow I'd love to know what recruits were saying on twitter who were at the game and what the sideline atmosphere was like (and what former players were around). Hopefully, our Jacksonville host can shed a little light whenever he gets a chance. No rush. Let's all enjoy this one and how far we've come from the nightmare of last season!

Keep calm, Gobble on

love that he was here for this game. We need to get him in the class early so he can start recruiting for us. Getting your QB early in the cycle has become a great way to boost your class.

Apparently we are planning to load up on CB's if we get LaMareon James, Karon Prunty, Tee Denson, and the CB that just decommited from FSU (if he is interested in Va Tech). Nothing wrong with this kind of talent behind Farley, Waller, Chatman, Murray and Webb!

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

With Dorian Strong and all the other potential CB's that is 5 in 1 class...

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

Farley/Waller probably will only be with us 1 more year. Both are pros.

Hints around the program seem to elude to Webb moving to FS/Rover next year. May have lost a step.

I just want him to play, I feel for him.

He's the Kenny Lewis of this generation.

30 years after starting grad school at Virginia Tech, I finally defended my dissertation and earned my PhD. Don't give up on your dreams.

It seems to me he'd be in line for a medical hardship waiver. Seems like they're keeping him under the 4 games this year to redshirt. Can then petition for a sixth year. Seems like he would have a very solid case for it.

Always choose joy.

He already redshirted. I believe medical hardship is the only option - and I believe the old rule of not playing after the 2nd half of the season begins is still in effect here (but I could be wrong).

So if he is going for a 6th year (which is likely IMO), he won't be seeing field at all in the last 4 games either.

Lamareon is a WR for us. Prunty and Bermudez could also end up at FS

all talks to Bermudez are about him playing nickel, the conner/ ladler roll.

Milum and Dematrius Davis to start the 2021 class would be the kind of start, both by importance of position and early recruiting on the camp circuit, that could see us land our best recruiting class of all time.

That is a BIG if, but that is kind of start you probably need to land a "breakthrough" class like that. Even top teams usually have to get some top dogs on board early to impact the rest of the class as it develops.

Davis, Milum, and Naquan Brown need to be the cornerstone of this class. Luckily, I'd say we're the strong leader for two of those, while a softer leader for the the other

So in other words, the 2021 class meltdown thread has the potential to be biblical?

I hope you're right, but how many times have we seen this? Almost every single year... I get it could be good momentum, but it's only 3 prospects who haven't committed yet.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I'm totally with you on this. My reason for optimism this time is simply that it's been a trend in the last 3 or so cycles for QB's to commit early and be the primary recruiters for their team. It's been an ESD thing, really, and on the current college football climate so much of your success is tied to QB play that it makes a big differences for guys on both sides of the ball.

I'm cautiously optimistic at best, but landing an OOS QB like that early in a class could pay dividends come the camp circuits and 7on7 stuff in the offseason.

No word on Tony Grimes though?

Mitch (2)

Doesn't sound like we are in the top group right now, but landing guys like Davis, Milium, and Brown along with a strong finish to this season (end in top 25) could have him give us another look.

I wouldn't say we are on the outside looking in for Grimes. Everything seems to be on the up and up after that whole Twitter spat earlier this season with his dad(?). Right now 247 has CBs split 50/50 between VT and aTm. I'm still optimistic about getting him to the good guys but I don't have any inside knowledge, just what I can get with my no pay 247 access.

I don't know why people are downvoting Palmetto Hokie. Perhaps he has inside info but doesn't want to betray his source. Even if he doesn't he isn't breaking any rules.

That said, even if he is working off public info that does seem to be the case. His dad went off on our staff on Twitter a couple months ago (seems we at least made some amends there) and his son has been mostly visiting CFP and CFP-adjacent schools. His only stated places he would like to OV so far are Penn State and Clemson.

Does that mean we don't have a chance? No, of course not. Recruiting is a crazy game. However, it would be wise to temper expectations on Grimes until we get a legit scoop to suggest we've made a big surge back into his recruitment. We would all love for him to be a Hokie, regardless of if you're negative or positive about it.

Palmetto doesn't need to reveal his source, but he should back up that opinion with some kind of detail as to why he believes it.

Otherwise, it's just noise.

That's the way I looked at it, just noise and pretty useless to the overall conversation.
