Study of 3rd Quarter offensive stuggles.

I have not been the biggest Cornelson fan to this point (and still think he has a startling lack of ability to call plays that work well within the "flow") of the game. But a quick review of 2 series in the 3rd Quarter showed that maybe the calls weren't so much the problem as the execution (or lack thereof):

-The first series stars around the 8 Minute mark, following a previous TD drive:
• 1st down – well-executed Zone-read/sweep to the Outside by JJ for 6.5 yds
• 2nd down and 4: incomplete, JJ attempts to throw a quick slant into double coverage, while to the Field side, Savoy (15) is absolutely wide-open for on a screen with 2 blockers setup and LB (33) who is cheating to the inside. This is at least a 20 yard gain, maybe a TD if WR can hold up their blocks
• 3rd and four: this play has been commented on multiple times; Keene is wide-open in the flats for at least chunk yardage. Instead, JJ tries to force the ball into Kumah on a curl. Interestingly, the ball is tipped by the LB who was out of position to cover Keene.

-The next offensive series starts around 3:40 occurring just after a particularly shit-tastic Defensive series where we looked utterly disorganized and cluless. We quickly gain a first-down with successive running plays by Peoples, then shit gets sideways:
• 1st down: appear to run an Inverted Veer which the ODU D appears 100% ready for. #31 blows it up from the backside, he pays no mind at all to Grimsley—clearly he has watched film as it seems that we almost never give the ball on the Jet Sweep in this situation. Had we actually handed the ball to #6, he looks like he may get the edge here.
• 2nd + 8: JJ absolutely 100% forces a bad ball into a double-covered Kumah. Had the ODU DB has one more step, this is a Pick-6. Both #31 and #23 are in position to make a play on the ball. Grimsley is wide-open with soft coverage in the middle of the field. JJ never sees him, because his back is turned to him from the snap.
• 3rd and 8: on an obvious passing down; ODU brings pressure and Oshane runs a stunt, and #74 manages to not touch him at all. The play is done, but rather than throw the ball into the sideline, JJ decides to throw the ball off his back foot over the middle of the field, this time into triple coverage---another ball that was lucky not to be an INT.

--On one hand, I can certainly make a strong criticism that Cornelson should have stuck with the run with Peoples that was consistently working. On another, there appeared to be plays there that simply were not made. ODU seemed to notice something that popped out to me as well...it appears that our 1st read was almost always to the boundary side of the field and that rarely was JJ getting off of the first read (as evidenced by his back facing the entire field side on the 2nd and 8). On the third hand, if you are the OC and your players aren't making the right reads...isn't that ultimately your responsibility? Anyways, just some thoughts from a frustrated non-expert..feel free to comment/critique.
