What are your goals as fans this season?

We've talked a lot about what we think the team's goals for this season should be. What are you goals as a fan though?

I have two main goals:

My first is to make at least one game this season. I originally wasn't going to make any last season until Marshall was added to the schedule.

My second is to not overreact and analyze things before offering scorching, hot takes. Last season I was in the camp that didn't care if Fuente was gone. I thought the defense was a joke and that youth shouldn't matter. I was wrong.

What are y'all's goals this season?

Dig it, dude. To be in Blacksburg, in college, back in those days must have been pretty far out.

Leonard. Duh.

No, I was the original resident of "Dullsville." I was in the Corps and kept my hair short (Air Force) after college and wore black rimmed glasses that were referred to as "birth-control" glasses (because no girl would date anyone who wore such ugly glasses).

p.s.: I get the "dig it" and "far out" references (although I all think of 70s and John Denver when I hear "far out) and the dancing girl, well I may have taken a glance or two in her direction when I didn't think anyone was looking. ;>)

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

Yeah, there was a break in things after you graduated. I marched in Nixon's first inaugural parade as a Highty Tighty, and in his second inaugural as a long haired hippie protester. The 60s were the change for big cities and the left coast, but those things happened more slowly in Virginia. The 70s were more interesting to me. Originally in the class of '72, graduated in '75. I'm not so sure if that solves the mystery or not. Back when I ran all the time and trained for marathons/triathlons, my hangovers were still pretty atrocious.

Watch a couple games in real time and enjoy a few beers while doing so. It all depends on cooperation of two young kids so I won't hold my breath, but I'm hoping my oldest gets interested enough that he might watch at least stretches of games with me this year.

As I get older I find many of the habits, traditions and entertainment I enjoyed in life don't mean as much to me anymore. Some have been replaced, some just faded away.

One that hasn't is enjoying watching VT play 15 games in the fall and agonizing over the correct combination of T-shirt and or Jersey to wear to give secure the most wins.

I dropped the ball last year, I've studied my failures and vow to improve this year.

GO HOKIES!

Here's a little parental advice for you... Get the baby used to noise (have the tv on, let the phone ring, etc). He will sleep a little better if he has some noise and then not wake up at every little sound.

My daughter was born the Thursday before the Appy State game in 2011. Her first game experience was while she was still in the hospital and then we watched every game at home. The yelling never really bothered her. Just get him used to it.

Just be careful when watching the games with your newborn.... Don't throw or spike him in the excitement of the game.

Your spiking comment prompts me to offer this advice - remember, the baby gets his / her own bottle and don't get it mixed up with the contents your own bottle.

Pro advice here. My first was born after football season but I seasoned her by watching loud war movies. That kid will sleep through anything. Now the trick is getting her to run out of energy so she sleeps.

Sound advice and it's probably why I could sleep through a nuclear blast given I was at my first game before I was 1.

That should be easy because Payoute will be in scoring his 3rd TD. Tre should be out by halftime with about 10 TDs.

Well, continue to tailgate with the best damn fans in the country and not miss a home game as I haven't since '98....enjoy the games with my wife as she has missed the last three seasons due to raising a couple of youngens...(her choice and i applaude her for that as we could've had a baby sitter)...we actually got engaged after the 2011 Clemson home disaster....and make sure I leave lane stadium after jumping for enter sandman, screaming on every defensive play, shaking my keys and accidentally tossing them 6 rows down at least once a game, and promising myself I go home without a voice...let's go!!!

I've never been in the military but was on an air force base in Japan for 10 days back in October 2008 as a contractor and was impressed with the AFN because it seemed like I got more games than I did at home. Maybe my memory is fading and it's not as great as I remember. I do remember that I was able to get up in the middle of the night to watch the debacle at FSU (where Tyrod got hurt on the first play of the game). Find hotels no further than Salem with my rewards chain for games, since I was lazy and didn't book that magical one day last summer when you can actually reserve a room in christiansburg not at the Super 8. It was 1000% easier to get a christiansburg hotel when Vick was QB than it is coming off 6-7 with the worst home schedule in 100 years. Fact.

That could have to do with the fact that Blacksburg is down 2 hotels due to housing issues. Therefore the excess flowed into Christiansburg.

Im not talking about just this year. If you don't book on that one day the hotels open up for the following season, you are in Salem, dublin, or at the super 8. I've done this many years. There are a bunch of folks that book every fall weekend before the schedule comes out and just cancel once they find out when the games are. I did it once and got lucky it was the right day/week to do it. Been that way for years.

Still a little late for this season, but next season I'd consider trying the ABNB route. If you have a group of 4 or more, you can find ABNBs cheaper than hotel rooms, and considerably more fun.

Boston is a fun town but Chestnut Hill is pretty low key. You'd barely know you're near Boston. Plenty of great seats available in the stadium too. The first time I went, I bought upper deck and just moved down because there were so many empty seats. Two years ago it was a night game and the student section was almost empty at kickoff.

Have you been to Louisville? That is the lone ACC stadium left for me to catch a game.

ive been to boston a few times. (Celtics fan. been to 2 Celtics playoff games spend an arm and a leg to take my son to the 2017 eastern conference finals, the game Isaiah Thomas shut it down and LeBron and the cavs won by 50+ lol, ive had the worst luck trying to go to Celtics games, the other 2 one of them KD & Russ didn't play in and KG and ray were out as well, and then missed steph curry out with an injury. I give up on that haha)

I'm pretty sure we haven't played at uofl

FSU is my lone place, I watched WVU vs UofL.

Yeah we haven't played at UofL yet. FSU was my 2nd to last. I made sure I went last season since we won't play there again until 2030. I've only been to NC State once (vs FSU). I would've made more of an effort last time if I knew it would be so long before we played there again. When Cuse and Pitt joined, it really dramatically changed how often we get to all those Atlantic conference teams not named BC ....

Yeah I was planning on FSU, but well life. Pitt and Cuse for me were in the BE when I went to them, haven't seen either in person since the ACC move.

I hear you. And in your defense, we've only played at Cuse once since they came to the ACC. Sidenote - Syracuse the town was nicer than I expected. I was worried Dinosaur BBQ would be a letdown after all the hype but it was enjoyable (just get there early). Stopped in a little brewery that we walked past and the beer was solid. Also grabbed a slice at Varsity Pizza before the game and the owner was super nice. We were obviously wearing Tech gear and he came around the counter to shake our hands, give some history of the place, and tell us about their gameday traditions (pennant flipping and marching band post-game). Also was a really easy direct flight from DCA. Hoping I can make it back when we play there again in 2028.

Pitt is always ... interesting. I've been there a bunch but talk about another house of horrors for us. Was fortunate enough to be there in 2016 to actually catch a W.

Pitt and WVU fans are the exact same which makes sense because they're only an hour apart. They hate each other so much because they're constantly competing for who can have the shittiest fans in college sports.

I'm going to watch with the upmost focus, every snap on the defensive side of the ball as I will likely never see the LPD in that form (schematically speaking) ever again.

Is it basketball season yet?

My goal is to get to at least 11 games this season to reach an even 200 lifetime before Bud retires. The travel schedule in odd years is always harder since Miami/BC/GT are all away and this year ND is too, but I figure I can swing at least 2 of those + UVA + 7 home games + bowl game. Then I'm looking forward to sleeping in January.

In 2010, I went to every game except the Miami game. I will be honest, I was a little glad for the break after the ACC CG game. It was tiring working full time and traveling for those games with little to no time off from work.

2016 I made every game except the Syracuse game including the ACC championship game and bowl game. Even years definitely easier with the away games usually being Duke and UNC(both closer to Richmond than Blacksburg), Pitt (only about a 4-5 hour drive), and that year @ Notre Dame and the Battle at Bristol. Gonna try again in 2020 where the "distance games" will be @ Louisville and @MTSU in Murfreesboro.

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

I went to every game in 2014 and 2016 but usually I'm at 10-11 games. Way easier in even years. 2022 will be the lowest mileage schedule in history (the away games are ODU, Liberty, 3 trips to the Triangle, and Pitt). If we make the ACCCG that season, we will have 12 games in VA/NC.

Gotta have the right crew to make it fun, but yeah even so, the bye week is usually a good rest from travel. I basically don't sleep in the fall. I have 5 big TVs at home but I'm one of those weirdos that just loves catching games in person. I probably go to about 50 live sporting events a year. Fortunately my wife is cool with it (and I guess she is a weirdo too - she had both VT season tickets + a Nats half-season ticket plan with one of her friends when I met her).
