I have none of the required experience, but would you consider a finance officer with 6+ years of tax preparation experience that is already 1000% done with this year's tax season? Because this sounds like more fun tbh.

It's not more fun. It's a 60+ hour/week job that you need to be on site for at 6AM 6 days week, at least. The schedule will be 3-6 months less than what you need. Every change order will be a fight to the death with the owner. The inspectors won't show up when you need them and will tell you to change something that's been in place for 6 months once they do. Subs won't show up, especially in hunting season or when they have a DUI court hearing. You will spend 6-18 months in very close proximity to people you don't want to spend anymore time with and the only out will be when half of you quit or are fired during the job. If you are fortunate enough to still be standing at the end of the project, nobody will ever want to see you again, not your subs, your superintendent, your client or your dog. You will either gain 30 lbs or lose 20 lbs through the process and you won't sleep soundly, even on weekends. There will be a ribbon cutting with a bunch of people who didn't have anything to do with the actual construction of the project and you can stand in the background and think about how many stabbings you can get away with from those big scissors before someone takes you out.

Besides that, its' a blast.

Lol do you work for Turner?

Too funny, as that was my first thought as well...

On a serious note, if any of you are not happy at your current position whether that be at Turner or somewhere else, there is absolutely zero reason to be unhappy in current market conditions. Every construction company has more work then they can handle, and not enough PMs, and especially Estimators or Superintendents for the current working conditions.

If the above requirements are not for you, fear not, I can still help as I have other clients in the DC Metro area. I can certainly help you!

Just email me your resume, and you can ask me what it's like to work directly for Bud and Beamer, and I can help you get more money and a job where you will be happy.

That sounds painstakingly similar to when I used to work in the nuclear industry and we'd travel to utilities for inspections during routine outages. I don't miss that aspect of my former job one bit.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

I've been in the Nuclear Industry has a Civil Engineer and a Spent Fuel Handler during outage season for 6 years. When the outage breaker opens and you begin working shift work, your personal life disappears.

No doubt. I was in the industry for 5 years full-time and 3 as a college intern. My job was designing the inspection equipment, so I'd typically go to 1-3 sites during Spring outage season and 1-3 sites during Fall outage season (about 2-3 months total each year). I enjoyed the design and testing aspect (and some of the onsite work), but the ever-changing outage schedules and dynamic of working inside containment with every personality and work group imaginable could be let's just say, challenging (as I'm sure you're well aware). Learned a lot in all aspects of my career and personal life; certainly wouldn't take it back. If you're in Lynchburg, there's a 50/50 chance I used to work at your current employer ;)

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Yes, I am in Lynchburg. Did you just leave recently? I think I know who this Ernest is..

I did. Left in June. Ahhh, I think I know who this is too. Hope you're doing well!

As an architect, I very much enjoyed your look behind the curtain.

Though I will say — as with most lines of work — some CMs are great to work with and some...aren't.

On one hand....

On the other hand....

What's funny is that long (and hilarious) peek behind the curtain didn't trash the architect for anything related to making their job harder, which was a pleasant surprise

"Let me send you a sketch on that" is sound rationale for defensible homicide.

This is the part they don't tell you about in school.

Like I said, sounds way more fun than arguing over the tax law changes with every single person that comes in to get them prepared.

*cries silently at his desk while working on a change order that is holding up $250K in retainage*

At least you arn't the jackasses that I was working with who were angry that we didn't release the final pay app when the refused to fix all the shit that they didn't do right.

I had to tell a contractor that I was shorting his pay application because the liquidated damages exceed the retainage on the project. They are over 240 days over... Grumble...

You really should be in sales.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Lol, this is why I transitioned from MEP to software.......my life is soooo much better now

Piggy backing off this... My company is hiring a BD Director with 5+ years of govcon experience. $50M (soon to be 75m) company in Bethesda MD. Will report to our VP of BD.

If we're piggy backing:
Looking for Architectural and Civil. Either production staff or licensure track. Blacksburg.
Edit: Pretty sure we'd probably be open to licensed folks as well. The focus, thus far, has been on the previously mentioned levels.

More piggy backing.... anybody need a 1L summer legal intern?

Any interest in criminal? You want to slum it in a RURAL part of a western state?

New Sigline: lol it's football season.

Sorry I'm just seeing this now but unfortunately I'm trying to stay on the east coast

Continuing to piggy back:
Looking for entry level roadway engineer and also entry level drainage/hydraulics engineer in Richmond.

More piggy backing:
Looking for an experienced water/sewer utility engineer in the area between Winston-Salem and Charlotte.

More piggy backing:

Looking for construction PM's, superintendents, interns, etc in SWVA/NETN.

Hm, how about a Mining and Minerals Engineer that has been severely misplaced into a dredging job (working out on the water etc)?

Look into Construction if you want. I also know many drilling and blasting companies are hiring as well, but that lifestyle will likely be the same as dredging.

Hmmm....maybe we should have a catchall "Jobs Looking For People" thread.

That should be a different thread. Start one.

Good idea. It's not procrastinating if TKP counts as networking

You wanting out already?

Nah. Mrs. APFOW wants to get the hell out of teaching. Can't imagine why.

Has she considered Software Training? My department is made up of former teachers that enjoy the classroom, but are fed up with the K-12 education system. Much better pay and you don't have to deal with BS from parents. Major downside is no summers off. Send an email jmecca[at]vt.edu. We are hiring!

She's fine with not having summers off if it means she doesn't have to deal with parents, entitled little shits, terrible administrators, leaky roofs, mold from the leaky roof, splitting her day between two schools, having no planning period because she is running between multiple schools, bringing a metric shit-ton of work home because she has no planning period...I could keep going, but how much time do you have?

Needless to say, check your inbox. And thank you for reaching out.

Currently looking for Senior PM in Construction industry in Harrisonburg area for an ornamental metals contractor if anyone is interested let me know.

I'm looking for a natural resources project/program manager for a full-time gig in Guam.

I was just in Guam. had a wonderful time. If anyone wanted to escape to paradise for a little while this would not be a bad gig. Also the location of my favorite crazy business story EVER about the founder of DHL.

Also the location of my favorite crazy business story EVER about the founder of DHL.

This sentence is just vague enough to have me hook, line, and sinker.

Do you have multiple crazy business stories about the founder of DHL and some of them were favorites at the time and then this one topped them all? How many challengers has it faced? What were the other favorite-at-the-time stories? What is this story? What other company founders do you have crazy business stories about? Why did crazy business happen on Guam?

Look up Shadow Billionaire online and watch the documentary. It's a great story. If you just want me to tell you it I will though. Don't want to spoil it unintentionally

edit:

reading your comment again I gather you were looking for personal story. I do have some about other famous business leaders but I don't think I would be able to share those on an online forum. but if/when we meet remind me to tell you about Uber.

Update, the Richmond position has been filled. I am still looking for DC Project Managers. Shoot me an email if you are interested!
