Torrian Gray may be out in Washington

Some rumblings that the Skins are in the hunt for a new Defensive Backs coach:

Below is a guy who has some Skins connections that I've followed for years, suggesting that TG may be out:

I'm not sure how Gray feels about Fuente after Fuente cut his pay, but could we see him back in Blacksburg?

Bring him back

When in doubt. Nap it out

I will say hello to everyone's mom, if it means he comes back.

Pay the man. Give him co-DC. Let's bring DBU back up to the standards it is suppose to be!

Why would you give Grey co-DC and not Wiles?

Twitter me

Not trying to sound dickish: What do you think giving a 'co-dc' title to Wiles would solve?

that doesn't make sense to me either

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

To be clear, I don't think Wiles needs a promotion. My comment was mostly an immediate response to the 'Torrian should be our DC' talk, I just never understand why fans thought that Torrian was shoe-in for DC if/when Foster left/was promoted. A handful of Tech Talk Lives from the Beamer days gave me the impression that Wiles has a better command of the defense than Gray. I also distinctly remember a couple comments where Foster hinted that Wiles could run his defense effectively.

Twitter me

Seem to recall Bud mentioning him and TG collaborating on schemes and game prep to where he was almost defacto Co-DC

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

Or... Or.... Or... we could find another coach who is hungry to prove himself and hungry to recruit. Why do so many people want to recycle the past? I get that he was successful and well liked here but there is near certainty the program can find someone else to improve upon that success going forward.

Ok. I'll bite. Whom?? Anytime someone makes this suggestion, it's fair to ask 'whom'. Whom else out their, in addition to Gray, has put nearly equal number of DBs into the NFL??? Go on. I'll wait.....

Waho's suck

Lorenzo Ward?

Not sure how it ended, but I know they were ready to run Ward out of town for his defenses at South Carolina. What has he been doing lately?

Interim head coach at UofL

ADDITION: He was back to being a DB coach, DC wasnt really his strong suit. But once Petrino was fired he became HC.

So I don't get paid to keep tabs on the up an comers in the coaching game. I work in a different industry. But VT has people who do. I'm pretty confident they can come up with some names. If not, we probably have the wrong people on the payroll.

i would say... Aazaar Abdul-Rahim. if not grey or any other hokie alum assuming you are saying that isn't the route you want to go.

Better break out your checkbook, as he's headed to UMass as their DC.

Really.

So we can offer him about 200k and he would be happy with the raise?

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Well fortunately VT could at least match anything UMass offered, and 'co-DC' at VT while Bud sunsets is a hell of a lot better job than DC at UMass.

Why would we be offering "co-DC"?

I get that it's a better job, but it's also a stretch.

I assumed the original idea was to offer him a position for his DMV recruiting prowess.

Why would we be offering "co-DC"?

1. To sweeten the pot.
2. He turned UMD-CP's DB unit into one of the better ones in the country, actually. He's proving to be a capable coach. If we had him on our staff, I think he'd instantly be one of our top D coaches after Bud.

As for the stretch part, a major D coaching job at VT is a hell of a lot better than any coordinator job at UMass. He could take over DBs from the 2 lame duck DB coaches we've got, so we'd likely end up saving money, then give him the 'co-DC' moniker.

If UMass is paying their HC <$500k/yr, I have no doubts we could match and exceed whatever they'll pay their 1st year DC.

When I said "stretch", I meant that it would be a stretch for VT to offer him the co-DC spot along side Bud.

I could see offering him a coaching job and a raise, but I thought "co-DC" was a stretch. He didn't even have that at Maryland.

but I thought "co-DC" was a stretch. He didn't even have that at Maryland.

That's part of the negotiation process. First you have to see if he'll listen just to the pay raise and the position. Holding on to something like a 'co-DC' moniker is just something to sweeten the deal if he turns you down initially. We've got to get creative when it comes to staffing and staff salaries. This would seem pretty low risk in the scheme of things.

At the end of the day, you reward employees in 3 ways:

  • Titles
  • Compensation & Benefits
  • Opportunity/Responsibility

We could give AAR a Co-DC title, and pay him more than he made at UMD, but if he wants full DC responsibility and the autonomy to run his own defense, he's not getting it at VT, unless we want to phase out Foster (maybe some people do, but I don't).

I'm not sure what AAR wants, but judging by the fact that he wasn't leaving UMD until getting a DC position, I'm guessing he wants to run his own defense.

Twitter me

You forgot expired Hardee's coupons.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Been mentioned in other threads, but AAR likes the DMV area, and hasn't been interested in VT in the past. He's not leaving for just a raise, he'll need a promotion too.

Twitter me

He loves the DMV so much he's moving to Amherst, MA - a mecca of CFB

The love for the DMV keeping us from offering was message board speculation. I would be very interested to see something with legit legs on the topic.

VT is a promotion over UMASS and Maryland.

twitter @smithey_daniel

It's not a promotion unless you're getting a title bump. I'm not sure Co-DC would be enough of a bump, he might want full DC responsibilities, which isn't happening on Foster's defense.

Twitter me

Recycle the past? That's the take on bringing him back? He had his pay cut and left for the NFL.

@hokie_rd

My understanding of the TG situation is that he's not really interested in playing the recruiting game any more. To that I doff my cap thank him for his time and efforts here. But if that's the case and I'm looking for a DB coach, I'm looking elsewhere.

If that ain't the case, get Sam Rogers as a GA and send him out on recruiting trips with TG to say hi to the moms.

Personally, I'm hungry for some GOAT.

God wouldn't it be awful if we hired a proven defensive back coach at VT?

I swear to god the people on this website man. They complain that Fuente's guys don't have enough P5 experience then say a proven guy is "recycling the past."

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,

Torrian Gray I'm told is no longer interested in coaching college and only stayed in Bburg as long as he did because of his daughter.

So... defaulting to him in a hiring discussion because he was the last successful DB coach at VT is, IMHO, recycling the past.

Dude that was not even the point of your original post. Come on.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

It wasn't? What was it then, cuz now I'm lost?

Dude, you literally said nada about TG being unhappy in the Burg or at the collegiate level in your OP.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used."
- The BoD

Couple things: I didn't say he was unhappy in the burg or unhappy in the college game. Just because someone has other opportunities or wants to try something different, it doesn't mean they are unhappy where they are.

To me, when folks automatically start throwing out names of alumni as coaching candidates primarily because they've once been successful at VT, it seems like recycling the past. It seems like barely a step up from the ol' Jim Weaver walk-down-the hall-hire coaching search. And honestly I'd like to learn about some fresh faces who could bring fresh ideas to the program.

Yes TG was a good player and a good CB coach. But I'd like to see VT build on that success, not cling to it as though there couldn't be anything better.

Second two paragraphs are fine and I don't really disagree with them. They also having nothing to do with what I was saying.

All I was saying was that you said absolutely nothing about TG and how he felt about anything in your OP. The entire comment was about how VT feels about him or other coaches. That's the only thing I was responding to.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used."
- The BoD

Anything better we either can't afford or they would have no interest in coming here because they're already at a program bigger than ours. I agree 100% that people on this forum bust a collective nut over someone like Flowers or Hall coming to coach their position, but there's a gargantuan difference between those guys and Gray. Gray has P5 experience, now NFL experience, and is miles ahead of those other guys.

Your original post said one thing, then you said it would be recycling the past because of burned bridges. But that wasn't till after someone else mentioned that. You completely changed the foundation for your argument.

But I'll bite, who would be better?

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

If we're gonna go new, for DBs coach, I want someone like D. Hall or Vinny Fuller. Someone that not only played the position @ Tech, but also in the NFL.

Yep. It isn't rocket science. There was a lot of discussion that Bud and Torrian were not on the same page with regards to Greg Stroman starting the ECU game a few years back. Add Fuente to the mix, who cut Gray's pay despite Gray's track record as one of the best DB coaches in college football. If he came back to Blacksburg, I would assume it would be after everyone, from Whit to Bud, had departed, if at all.

It is a bit of a bummer. He was totally cool to talk to about the game.

Torrian was a tad insane, and his antics on gameday were pretty crazy.

Now, grant it, I was only around him year one, but when he's screaming in the booth and crying (yes literal tears) and the other coaches are complaining about it at half time, people take notice.

He could have matured over the years, but that first impression is a hard one for me to shake.

I think we are all overreacting to our dbs not being so hot this year frankly because they were very young, to begin with, and the defense lost its entire identity.

Yea, I've gathered from a variety of posts on this site, and some one off stories from #sauces that Bud and Torrian didn't depart on the best terms.

good for him. Always happy to see someone get out from under the dark shadow cast by Dan Snyder's incompetence

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Worked for Kyle Shannahan, Sean McVay and Matt Lafleur.

I want the defensive staff to be nobody but who Foster wants. Period. Don't even care who Fuente wants.

I think I understand (and agree with) what you meant by that, and I hope it's not "it's OK to have two separate cliques who don't like each other running the football program."

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

I have heard rumblings of Fuente sticking defensive staff under Foster that he may not have chosen for himself. Foster has already proven he's one of the best defensive coordinators in the country. I want Foster to field his defense with the coaches that HE believes can do the job. I don't really have any reason to think that Fuente knows better than Foster.

It seems reasonable to me that Fuente attempt build some staff on D. I don't mean from an expertise perspective, but as a bench strength measure for two reasons;
1. How much longer do we believe Bud will DC?
2. Bud's HC opportunity could come at any time.

Do we really think Bud would hang around and let Fu do that?

"War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner.”~~Judge Holden

No. Not really.

Well, to read this board there seems to be a belief the Bud has some people on staff that were somewhat thrust upon him.

If he got Galen Scott's pay and perhaps CO-DC (which I think Foster would be okay with) maybe. That would likely solve our Nix and Mitchell problem. I'm not a big fan of having separate coaches for corner backs and safeties.

actually after thinking about this a little more... id be interested in loren Johnson. hes won big at the highschool level. In VA. so he has coaching experience as head coach, relationships with high school kids and more than likely other high school coaches which i would imagine would translate to good recruiting in VA, has knowledge of buds system. bring the lunch pail mentality back to the DBs and start becoming ball hawks again. This may not be a "splash" hire but I think it would work out really well for VT with just a little bit of patience.

Why does Loren Johnson rarely come up in the conversations? If he was interested I'd love it if they gave him a shot.

Why would we expect to get anyone half way decent following this last dumpster fire of a year and with a pessimistic outlook for next at that position? Look who Fuente brought on (was able to) when he was still one of the "hottest" coaches in CF. We couldn't even pull away an up and coming grad assistant from Tulane Tech if we tried, let alone a step up hire. Nix was on perpetual demotion until arriving a tech (understand it was a forced hire but still).

In regards to T-Gray, all I know is our DBs were legit under him - AKA - could make high school tackles and had decent technique. Never heard any former players, including D-Hall, B-Flowers and others, say anything but good things and that they were well coached.

So is Mitchell still a goner? Rumor was that he was out.
