OT: Best Gas Station Food

Interesting conversation this morning on SiriusXM College Sports Ch. 84 about what gas station has the best food.

Where are your must go's for Gas Station cuisine and what is your go-to order?

My Personal Top 3:

1) Mac's Country Store (Massies Mill, VA - Rt. 151 in Nelson County)
- The best Fried Chicken.

2) Brugh's Mill (Buchanan, VA - Exit 156, I-81)
- Anything here, I have yet to have a bad meal

3) Eavers BP (Stuarts Draft, VA - Route 340)
- Again, Fried Chicken

Gas station sushi, doesn't matter which gas station

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Same result every time

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

The "sting ring" reminds me of the Dietrick chilli challenge circa 95/96

There's the cleanse diet, and then there's this.

The Grocery Barn (yes its a gas station), Spivey's Corner area of Eastern NC.

Is it basketball season yet?

Black Bear Pizza in Asheville, NC is attached to a gas station was pretty spiffy but I can't say it is a "go to" as I've only been there once on a recommendation from the hotel front desk while we were on vacation.

Wawa, anywhere

Recruit Prosim

i always tend to associate wawa as a convenience store that began selling gas, and not a gas station that has food. wawa's food is good tho

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Philly still has plenty without gas stations attached.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

so does NJ, although the county road intersection with a new Wawa+gas station on one corner and a liquor store inhabiting the old Wawa building on the opposite corner is becoming increasingly common.

I just tend to think of Wawa/Quick Chek/7-Elevens as convenience stores that decided to sell gas rather than "gas station food"

Fresh 7-11 taquitos are the best food to eat while driving.

Taco and Cheese taquitos are an excellent end to a very drunk night.

Same here.

Best tacquito experience had to be when my buddy and I ran into Jeff Allen and Dorenzo Hudson at the 7-11 off North Main Street while waiting for fresh tacquitos. This was the exchange:

Me: "Hey man, that's Jeff Allen!"

Buddy: "Who is Jeff Allen?"

Jeff Allen: "I'm Jeff Allen"

Buddy: "You're Jeff Allen"

Jeff Allen: "Yeah, I'm Jeff Allen"

Buddy: "Really.... Hmmm... and who are you?"

Dorenzo Hudson: "I'm Dorenzo"

Buddy: "Dorenzo, eh??"

Dorenzo Hudson: "Yep, I'm Dorenzo, allll dayyyy.".

Buddy: "Well, I'm Will....... Allllll day......"

We gave a bunch of handshakes and left. They were cool.

Tiger fuel exxon stations in and around Charlottesville. Started as just Bel Air Market west of town on US 250, but they have a lot more now. Fantastic sandwiches. I actually took dates there in high school.

For a while, there was a completely unassociated gas station in Crozet that ripped off all their recipes and was also awesome, but they went out of business.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I remodeled a house in Farmington several years ago and ate at Bel Air probably 3 days a week. Hands down the best gas station sandwiches I've ever had. And this is saying a lot because I go out of my way to not give anything Charlottesville-related credit for anything positive lol.

Wawa is the king anywhere you can find it.

Here in Scottsdale is a place called The Thumb. It's a gas station/car wash/amazing barbecue. Made an appearance on Diners Drive In and Dives. Some of the best BBQ I've ever had.

I've never understood the love for Wawa, it's the same thing as sheetz and I dont think their subs are as good as sheetz. I'd put Wawa on par with subway, which sheetz is just slightly higher than, it's not like sheetz is king either.

See I disagree. Sheetz has variety which I appreciate, but I think wawas subs are GOAT.

Recruit Prosim

It's the same concept as Sheetz, but definitely not the same thing. They both have complementary strengths and weaknesses. Wawa kicks Sheetz's ass for breakfast, and seems to have a better selection of grab-n-go stuff in the cooler, but if I want a hot lunch or dinner, it's Sheetz's meatball sub on a pretzel roll all day every day.

Man what ever happened to gas station fried chicken meals? Can't find them anywhere anymore.

Royal Farms still does fried chicken I think. It is pretty good, but in Hampton Roads, Pollards is superior (though not attached to a gas station) so they get my fried chicken money.

They're all over the place in the corridor between PA and VA.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

Rudy's "Country Store." Moist brisket.

Class of '02. GO HOKIES!

How few people know about Rudy's...there was one in CO Springs, I discovered, about a year after I moved there.

Bennett's near Brookneal VA has amazing fried chicken

Never thought I'd encounter someone who knew Bennett's/Puckettes/Lightning's on the Internet!

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

My wife's family lives right near there and her dad was a fraternity brother at Tech with the owner who passed away this past year

The odds of me knowing your wife's family is high haha. I used to go to church near there and I have family just down the road from there. Small world!

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

They live over in Red House..last name of Bennett but not related to the owner of the gas station

These are some nice suggestions, will have to check em out.
There's a seafood place in a Liberty Station in Front Royal called
Talk of the Mountain that's supposed to be good.

There's a gas station in Black Rock, NC right on US17 that has a little restaurant attached, Black Rock Deli. (Any WoW player would understand why I had to stop there.) Had one of the best burgers I've ever had in that place. Small deli, cluttered with junk for sale, and I would sweat that the old lady on the grill had a cigarette hanging out of her mouth, but damn, what a great burger!

I don't even know if the place still exists, as the most recent review is over four years ago.

RT 60 Citco in Providence Forge Va. Fried chicken gizzards!

I don't believe 7-11s and Wawa should count here. Not grody enough.

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

Fried chicken gizzards with a great hot sauce are the best quik meal. Yummy! When i lived in central florida and worked at Harris there was a gas station in a rough part of Melbourne that had them. Absolutely great lunch choice!

Haha I'm trying to think about the "rough part" of Melbourne...just can't come up with it.

Yea, its relative to the rest of town. Its certainly not as bad as larger cities "rough parts". But that area is certainly far from nice.

Sting-Rays (Exxon). Eastern Shore of VA...just north of Cape Charles. Best I've ever had. Great crab cakes, fried flounder, soft shell crab sandwiches.... local seafood cooked up at the Exxon. Daily specials based on what's hitting out on the water. Can't be beat.

My home town getting some love! It is good food and it is at a gas station but I never thought of it as gas station food...

Are there any Stuckey's left anymore?

I also had that question awhile back and a few days later saw a Stuckey's off I-40 in NC east of Asheville. A Google search turns up that there are a handful left.

Nutlog! Phrasing!

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

Smiley's BBQ... exit 205 on I-81.

How has this not been mentioned?

Is this really that good? Seriously asking because I grew up just 15 minutes from there and never once went, but I have been tempted to stop on the way to Blacksburg... Peck's BBQ was always our go-to in the Augusta County area.

I absolutely loved going to Peck's and can slightly remember it when it was on the corner of 250 and Pelham

Yep! I haven't been in quite some time, but it was/is awesome. They've since moved to Staunton off Route 11 if you're heading south out of town.

Oh yeah I'm from the area but have since moved away, went a few times to the location on 11

I've seen the signs but was never sure if it was good or not. Will have to give it a try.

I went in once because I had seen the signs and they always seem to have the cheapest gas. Food looked like it had been sitting there a week.

Their bbq is mediocre, service speed can vary. The best thing they have is steak, egg, and cheese biscuits during breakfast, which I recommend, unless you're in a hurry.

"Hokie religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid." Han Solo

Funny you ask. I pass through there all the time, and stop at one of the truck stops across the street almost every time (it's a convenient stopping point for fuel and bladder relief), but have never been tempted to try the BBQ at Mr. Smiley's. I'm no germophobe, but that place just feels botulism-y the moment I walk through the door, and I don't know why.

Buck-ee's is really good, don't know if best. But after driving for 24 hours to visit my brother in Texas, then see the sign knowing I can fill up.my stomach with food and get gas for the last couple hours is a great feeling.

Edit: I can't spell, tired and ready to get off work to clean my apartment when my parents visit tomorrow.

is this "buck-ee's"? recently drove past going from Austin to San Antonio and it looked like 15 acres of fuel pumps LOL

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

It is indeed Buck-ee's and they are known as one of the largest gas stations (that does not service trucks). They are all pretty big and I can attest to their claim that they have the cleanest public restrooms. Personal room stalls with a floor to ceiling door. If you have to pinch one out on the road, this is the place to stop.

Historically, Landry's at the Breaux Bridge (LA) exit on I-10 also sold "Gas and Diesel" (and fishing tackle and probably everything else prior to the convenience store chains)...and their Cajun food was always authentic and amazing.

They've expanded quite a bit in the last 30 years. https://www.landrysseafood.com/

Corned Beef King - Liberty Gas Station in Rockville MD (and food trucks around the DMV). This thread inspired me to walk across the street today. Holy hell, I don't know what's better, the rye bread or the beef itself.

7-11 taquitos and Sheetz quesoritos. Also, have been told the BLTs at Kelley's Market in Gala, VA are loaded with crispy bacon.

I'm not sure how we got so many comments in and this was the first mention of Sheetz. It's the only gas station I ever travelled to specifically to pick up dinner.

My company just switched our fleet fueling to Sheetz. There is one in Lexington, two in Rocky Mount on my way to Martinsville and one just passed Martinsville in Ridgeway, plus one being built in Daleville, so I'm covered in all the directions I go for my job.

There were a small strip of Shell stations in the SE NC area near Laurinburg/Lumberton that had damn good fried chicken

Funny that this thread shows up today because I finally made it to 2 Sisters Tap Room & Deli in Altavista today. I dare someone to find a gas station with better food and draft beer selection.

Rudy's Bar-B-Q in San Antonio. Weird combo gas station & barbecue joint. Best creamed corn I've ever had

Moore's Country Stores around Lynchburg

Oh yeah. I've been to the one over at water lick and Leesville a few times. Something weird about getting oysters from a gas station in central Virginia though.

I may or may not hit up Moore's at least once a week when I'm out and about in the field. Keep in mind, I'm usually only in the field twice a week.

This is the correct answer. Wasknick requests tubs of the chili...frequently.

There's a small citgo on 250 in near crozet that has the best Mexican food the carnitas are to die for.
Also Providence forge Adams sports Mart is the bee's knees

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

So does anyone else when thinking of gas station food not have places with a restaurant built in or even a Wawa/Sheetz type place but a counter with fried chicken etc? Old country gas station type places.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Yes. Brownsville market right next to my high school in crozet is a perfect example. Double fried potato wedges to die for and fantastic fried chicken. Chili dogs were gross and a express ticket to the John but everything else was pretty good. Oh yeah, and 25 cent rc cola machine out front.

Brownsville Market is really good too- have been there quite a few times too.

Snuffy's off of Prices Fork Road heading out of Blacksburg had really good biscuits, it was always a good stop for us when we were heading out fishing.

Yes, this is what I was going for in "Gas Station Food" - not so much Wawa/Sheetz/7-Elevens

Sadly, neither of my two best exist any more:

1) Chili Dog at Weaver's Store in Konnarock, VA (RIP)
2) Chevron Dogs (slaw dogs) at the Glade Spring exit for I81 (RIP)
3) Broasters Fried Chicken/Corn Dogs from Brown's Pantry (Enterprise Road Exit- I81)

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I see your chevron dog and raise you a "Bare" dog- chili, cheese, bbq, and slaw. I was fortunate to see to Mr. Bare a few years ago and expressed my love of the Chevron deli (and my disappointment that he sold out.)

They must be fantastic.

Using /s is for cowards.

You beat me to it French. I came to this thread just to post my vote for Biscuits N' Porn. They have awesome biscuits in the morning and enough nude magazines to supply all the teenagers in North Carolina. Not to mention their excellent selection of t-shirts and koozies that bear their logo.

I just read it for the articles I just go there for the biscuits, honey.

For some reason when I saw the title, I thought this was going to be more of a snack food related thread. Surprised that hasn't been mentioned, so I'll start. The road trip gas station snack food king is:

CHEF POINT CAFE in the DFW metroplex. A Jamaican born classically trained French chef couldn't get a loan to open a restaurant so he bought a run down gas station in an upper lower class/lower middle class part of town. Started serving unreal dishes that shouldn't be served at a gas station. I've seen the place transform from a hole in the wall to multiple expansions. To be honest, the gas pumps may just be for show at this point.

Your description of this place sounds like you should be saying it from the driver's seat of a 68 Camaro a la Diners Drive Ins & Dives.

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

Pretty sure it was covered on the show.

FamilyMart in Okinawa, Japan.

HTHokie93

Oh yeah?? I'll go try that this afternoon.

Two tours there - good stuff! Better sushi than most US restaurants.

HTHokie93

Went there a few times while in Japan. They're pretty good. But basically every convenience store in Japan is awesome compared to in the US.

Wise Choice in the West End of Richmond, VA. Great fried chicken, smoked chicken, and fried giblets. Get there early b/c they line up for this stuff

R&R Taqueria in Maryland (but I think they moved out of the gas station to the strip mall behind it) at I-95 and Rt 175.

Sheetz is superior to Wawa and I will not be listening to anybody who says otherwise

Henry Skutt ftw!

Redneck BBQ Lab in Benson, NC. Right off 40, exit 319. Attached to a BP, so I'll count it. Gotta go grab some burnt ends on a Saturday.

That place sucks, and so does your taste in bbq.

Harsh.

I'm not the one who had them cater my wedding.

Tough, but fair

I'm going to say Hilltop cause there biscuits are really good

When in doubt. Nap it out

Dodge's Chicken in Troutville off Exit 150 on 81. Damn good chicken, sweet potato pies, and egg rolls.

Anyone familiar with the Meeting Place in Alta, WV, off exit 161 on I-64?

Marshall University student.
Virginia Tech fanatic.

I noticed no one has mentioned the Rally Mart down in Hilton's Virginia. Best cheeseburger around and it is close to The Carter Family Fold

Whites Truck Stop on I81 has amazing fudge.

Your best? Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and FUCK the prom queen!

Iron Skillet at White's is the best. There's a sports bar across the road now at Smiley's.

RIP Berky's which used to be just up the road at the Lee Hi truck stop. Same guy owns Whites and Lee Hi and decided to lease Berky's out to become an IHOP. Great memories there.

One of the best memories I have with my dad is stopping at White's for dinner while on the road with him and getting to eat in the Truckers Only section and seeing the giant alligator on the wall. I was 13 or 14 at the time. First time I'd ever seen a Thompson smg in the flesh too.

Good as anyplace!

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

The Sunoco right off of the Fishersville exit 64/81. They make the best Boar's Head meat and cheese sandwiches.

Y'all gonna learn today. You have two options:

1) You're not the driver. You go to 7-11 and buy a big bite. But you ask for two boxes. You get a dog on a bun and two boxes. You're set.
You go to the fixin's and you load up on chili and cheese. You add ketchup, mustard, relish, onions, and whatever else your po ass gonna eat. Don't worry about it bleeding through, you got two boxes.
You grab a knife, fork, and spoon. This late night meal is yours for the enjoyin'.

2) You're the driver. You gotta get on it. You have one and only one option. Popcorn chicken. If you have a KFC nearby you'll be fine. If you only have a Sheetzes you'll survive. Grab em and go. No sauces, you're driving.

I'm not asking for opinions.

First of all, I thought horses perferred beefareeno?
