Follow Dalton Keene around for a summer workout day.

The other constant presence around the room is Hollifield, who paces in between reps while talking to himself about his next set or sharing words of encouragement for his teammates.

"He's the energizer bunny, man," Hilgart says with a laugh. "He's got energy, non-stop energy."

Coach Justin Fuente doesn't make an appearance on Tuesday, but he's a regular visitor in the summer. He takes less of a coaching role than that of a cheerleader in the weight room.

"I think that's pretty cool," Keene says. "Not a lot of head coaches do that. I know he's busy with recruiting and whatever else he has going on. I think it's really cool to have him there. He'll even change out weights. I think that's awesome."

This is a great read, it follows Keene from breakfast to dinner. Includes so observations about the team and coaches, and some subtly hints at players who left.

Damn, my Blacksburg summers included floating on the New River, playing beer pong at the frat house and weekend hiking/homeplace trips. I always forget about the rigor of the typical student-athlete's schedule.

I'm surprised more kids don't take at least online summer classes. I've enjoyed taking summer classes both on campus and online towards my degrees. Granted I'm in my mid 30's so I enjoy other past times and random things make me happy. Like the offset umbrella I got for father's day to cover my grill area.

Speaking for myself, online classes were always a huge struggle. I wasn't mature enough to hold myself accountable and get the work done. At this point in life, I would expect to do better with then but they'd have been a waste of money during the summer as an 18 year old.

Summer classes on campus sound great until you wind up in an older building with no AC sweating your balls off in one of the hottest summers ever recorded.

If you play it, they will win.

Still bitter, huh? I did a summer session in 2005. Lived in Harper. Took the 2nd accounting class and stats. Accounting 2 was easier than the first one. That was when I really grew to appreciate Blacksburg. Those summer evening bike rides were the best.

Maybe. Trying not to fall out as heat casualty in stats was distracting.

Glad to hear that a core group of players are taking a leadership role and are "leading by example". When a core "buys in" to the program, the team will follow...

Last year, the non-conformists were the folks that made the team uncomfortable. This year, it sounds like the people that would be the most uncomfortable would be the people not buying into the program.

There's a word for that: C-U-L-T-U-R-E!!!

Time to Get Bud signed and let's go...

I wonder if the NBA on the shirts means "No Bullsh*t Allowed"

It's no bitching allowed

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

I thought it was No Bitches Allowed?

Pretty sure it is New Birch trees, Arbor day.

Nah, I confirmed from an unknown source that NBA stands for the National Basketball Association. Our football team appears to be comprised of a large group of bball fans.

I think Dalton is the New Sam..

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

I think Dalton Dax is the New Sam..

Went ahead and fixed that for ya...Sam and Dax probably had a cot set up in the weight room...also I think Dax will be the new "Sam/Chuck Norris" Saying...Example: Dax Hollifield doesn't read books. He stares them down until he gets the information he wants.

We can call Dalton the new Danny Coale...faster than he looks...always open..

Did you not watch that run against Duke, he doesn't look fast nor is he fast. It was just like the Jackson run against WVU, so wide open, but not fast.

Maybe fast is the wrong word...maybe I should say he gets open...even on that catch against UVA he was open early...

Also, every Sunday, I watch "slow" Greg Olsen get open for the Panthers...

Sorry HH! Dalton would cremate Dax in a thumb wrestling match!

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

Sounds about white.

It was nice being able to read about the ins and outs of summer workouts. Access, if you will.

It seems like team cohesiveness is no longer an issue. I'm really excited to see how this plays out on the field this Fall!

Is it basketball season yet?

The nonbelievers have been removed / transferred # sauces

It took 2 years. I don't want to see anymore major purges.

I think you've stumbled onto the true meaning of NBA

Non-Believers Adios

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I thought it might have been No Bad Actors but I wonder if it is No Bad Attitudes. That seems to fit better.

It's not been officially revealed either way but on good message board rumor authority, it's neither of those.

Ok, I'll wait to discover what the real meaning of those NBA shirts are ... but I like my version. ;>)

"Keene graduated to the elite Hokie tier at the end of spring. The group consists of about a third of the team including Will(i)s, Hollifield, TyJuan Garbutt, Zion Debose and Rayshard Ashby. Membership in the top group — which requires meeting certain physical standards — means a more specialized workout plan."

I love that the player leaders are truly leading by example, starting in the weight room. When is the last time our starting QB was in the elite workout tier group? Willis definitely seems like he is willing to work, and that can only mean good things. I am the eternal optimist when it comes to VT football, but everything I see points to Willis breaking out this season.

A leg for you sir!! And another for Willis if I could. The harder you work, the luckier you get.

I think Willis made is 1st step towards the Hokie tier when this happened:

Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

Technically, I would say Willis broke out last year by coming in as a backup and having a pretty outstanding season.

But I get your point. It's great when your QB is one of the hardest workers on the team, and if Willis makes even a solid improvement in 2019 that's going to be a great thing. This is asking a lot of a guy who will turn 23 in September, but if he can pack on about 10 pounds of muscle, we're going to have one of the most athletic QBs in the ACC, if not the country.

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

Willis comes in after JJ gets hurt last season and has a statistically decent year. But the team was mediocre at best. There were stories about how the team did not support him, as I recall. I was at the spring game this year. Willis was far and away the best QB in my eyes. It appears as if he has done everything you could ask of as a player and a leader. I think he has worked his way into a shoot at a monster year. I love that he earned what he will get. Not that he needs my support, but I am rooting for him.

It sounded like he got off on the wrong foot with the team over the summer, and I've heard second hand that he is very open about his fortunate upbringing. I'll be the first to admit that hearing the stories about him from multiple sources really soured me on him. But he has a great work ethic. That's been documented as well. Hopefully the bad stuff is behind him and he's ready to be a hard working leader.

I'm not sure most VT fans appreciate how good Willis was last year. From HokieSports.com:

Finished third in the ACC with a 2.67 TD-to-INT ratio, fourth in passing yards per game (226.3 ypg), fourth in pass efficiency (138.0) and fifth in total offense (244.8 ypg) ... His 2,716 passing yards ranks eighth all-time in a single season at Virginia Tech ... Was Tech's third-leading rusher with 354 yards and four TDs

If he duplicates 2018, he'll be a top-5 all-time VT QB from a production standpoint. If he improves, and the defense is substantially better than the historically bad 2018 unit, we should compete for the Coastal.

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

The issue is that the same could have been said about Jackson's freshman year. A 138 passer rating being 4th means most ACC QBs weren't that good throwing the ball.

Except Jackson got to rack up some stats against some terrible OOC teams. Willis didn't have that luxury last year. Jackson had a 108.4 rating against ACC opponents his freshman year. Willis had a 135.7 rating vs ACC opponents.
