2019 NBA Draft Thread

With the NBA Draft Thursday we will finally see where NAW will be drafted. Big opportunity to give our program a share of the spotlight, which he already is doing by wearing maroon and orange in his interviews. Here's an awesome article from the Ringer that mentions NAW as one of 5 players in this draft class who will not fail.

Besides NAW getting drafted, this draft gives us crazy potential trades, especially with rumors of the Pelicans wanting to pair RJ and Zion together. Things could get crazy tomorrow!

#4 (LAL to NO) and #23 (UTA to MEM) have already been traded ahead of tomorrow, and I bet there will be a lot more to come.

Be interesting if NO can move up to 3 to snag Barrett.

Vroom Vroom

How is the #4 trade done if the deal isn't projected to finalize until 6 July (or later)? I've seen a lot of insider tweets pointing to the 6 July date for finalization of the trade. Does that mean LAL will pick whomever NO tells them to pick?

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Yes, LA will select a player at NO's directive

Happens a lot in the NBA

Yeah, it's something the NBA really should fix. It gets even more confusing because the trades can happen on July 6th but the rookie salaries dont count toward the trade values. That cant happen until later in July because there is a month required before that happens. So if a team needs the rookie contract to make the numbers work the trade doesnt happen for another month.

I don't understand why they don't start the next league season on the day of the draft. The draft should be part of the upcoming season, not the last.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

probably because that's the way it's always been done and no one wants to rock the boat too much.

I don't care where NAW ends up his suit jacket is nice.

(add if applicable) /s

I wouldn't pair Zion with RJ, RJ is too ball dominant to put with a guy that talented and Ingram. I'd draft Culver, I really like him and he'd flourish as a second or third option off the ball.

i NEED that blazer...like YESTERDAY! So hyped to see the draft now after seeing that. Hope he reps the Hokies hard even after Buzz going elsewhere.

I wish the Wizards would just trade Beal. I get Ted wants to keep him to put butts in the seat, but aside from that, there is ZERO reason to keep him. With Wall out most, if not all, of next season (and most likely not going to be 100% himself again once he comes back), the Wizards are going to suck next season, and most likely the next 3-4 years. Plus his HORRENDOUS super max deal that dumbass Ernie gave him (45 m/year for 4-5 years) is going to cap stricken the Wiz for the entirety of the contract.

There is NO reason to keep Beal who is only 25 y/o and going into his prime, at a reasonable contract. He is at his highest value, so they should try and get the most for him. No need to keep a guy in his prime while we are going to suck. We need to tank and start rebuilding. Giving him the rumored 3 year/111 million extension would be disastrous. Tying up 82 million into two players is just fucking dumb, especially since they have proven the two can't get out of the 2nd round.

Rant over.... Go Wiz.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Zards need to burn it all down and start anew.

Hire a goddamn GM already. Let them decide what to do with Brooks (though Ted likely won't let him go until his contract is up in 2021). Trade every valuable asset and TANK.

Ted is SUCH a terrible NBA owner and avoids scrutiny because of the Caps success, Snyder's singular horribleness, and the Lerner's insane dedication to staying under the luxury cap.

Please, someone pry the Zards away from MSE before its too late.

100% agree with everything you said

Tommy Sheppard is heading up the draft.... I know more about a German shepherd!

Replicate what the 6ers did, and tank and keep on drafting high until you have reloaded the team with young prospects, then you can add proven studs and veterans to the team.

I see someone listens to the Junks :)

It's a pretty terrible situation right now.

Wall's contract. Beal's upcoming extension. No GM. DC isn't an attractive option to FAs even without all of those problems.

Zards are screwed for a long time.

Most recent Ringer mock has NAW #14 to Boston

Would be a much nicer landing spot than most of the ones I've seen, sending him to Orlando

Yes please. Make it happen Danny!

I think it's very unlikely the celtics use all three of their first rounders this year, especially with kyrie (and now horford) likely going elsewhere. Wouldn't be surprised to see them try to package all three to try to snag a star (Beal?) or try to try to move up as far as possible. Celtics are in a weird spot where they have more assets and incoming you players than roster space to use them -- maybe they stay pat at #14 and then use their later picks on draft and stash players, who knows

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

As a Celtics fan, I would be thrilled to get Beal. It's not happening for those picks though. We'd probably have to throw in the Memphis first rounder next year, Jaylen Brown and more. The C's are in a weird spot. I don't think the sky is falling as much as everyone claims. Ainge is still a great GM, Brad is still a great coach. Tatum and Brown are solid young pieces and they still have picks to use. I agree that they will try to make some sort of move and won't stand pat though.

I don't see him dropping this far, but would love to see the Sixers snag NAW in the first round. They need a 2 that can shoot desperately, and if they keep Redick they need someone that can take minutes because the guy has no gas left in the tank come playoff time

Elton Brand shot his shot and you can't blame him for it, but I think that the Tobias Harris trade will be judged terribly down the road with benefit of hindsight. Maybe Shamet isn't on the same "schedule" as the championship window, but I think he has an all-star ceiling and he can shoot the lights out. Not to mention all the draft capital going to the clippers.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Agreed. Shamet clearly can play at an NBA level. If the Sixers can sign Butler and Harris, I don't think that trade is looked at poorly, as they will be a contender in the East for the next 4-5 years.

If they don't, the Process will fade out

As a Heat fan, really hoping we at least look into taking NAW at 13, we need a guard and I'm not sold on Porter/Langford. They both might have more potential than NAW but I think NAW has way higher floor than both of them.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Already some trades reported with MIN moving up to 6 (11 and Saric to aPHX) and ATL moving up to 4 (for 8 and 17, plus second round pick swap and they take back Solomon Hill's deal from NO)

Found a video of RJ Barrett with new hair cut!

I hope the commissioner doesn't say Virginia Tech University

I would think this was funny if it wasn't such a real possibility

Would NAW be a good fit for New Orleans at 8 to pair with Zion?

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

This aged well

I love the Cam Johnson pick at 11. Johnson and Kabengele are my big sleepers in this draft.
I don't quite understand the Darius Garland pick at 5.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Naw to the Pelicans 17th overall

Would love this pick if Jrue Holiday gets traded. NAW's game compliments Lonzo Ball.

The way the roster is structured, NAW is pretty fucked. He's not going to outplay Holiday, Lonzo or Ingram as a rookie so his ceiling is going to be as a sixth man.

Obviously getting to play with Zion bodes well for NAW. I see NAW as an elite roll player/quasi all-star so playing alongside a defined alpha dog is great for his development.

If he can be a reliable spot up shooter he will get minutes. It's a tall task with the guys ahead of him, but in today's NBA you gotta have shooters off the bench.

The only way I can see working out if NAW plays the "Andre Igoudala" role when Zion is playing as a small ball 5.

NO is loaded with young talent and NAW will get his minutes because Gentry is a forward thinking coach who wants to play f a s t. Having secondary ballhandlers with shooting range and defensive chops is key to playing fast since you're going to wind up with scrambled matchups as a result the tempo.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Good lord. The pelicans are the most athletic team in the league.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

NAW with Zion!!! Love it

Good look NAW. So happy for the guy, he is going to a good spot

Pick got traded to Pelicans but trade can't be consummated until July 6th

Trades aren't official until July. So teams are drafting for the team they trade.

We put the K in Kwality

I mean it has Brooklyn in the graphic and Atlanta in the tweet. Yet he's going to New Orleans. That's absurdly confusing.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Initially Brooklyn's pick. Got traded to Atlanta as a part of the Alan Crabbe trade made earlier this month. Pick was again traded to New Orleans earlier today.

The first tweet has been updated. Brooklyn is now mentioned in the tweet instead of Atlanta.

The way the NBA structures these trades so that kids are "drafted" to teams they already know they won't go to is one of the all-time dumbest things in all of sports.

Brooklyn initially had this pick but had traded it to Atlanta months prior. Today, Atlanta agreed to trade that pick to New Orleans. However, the way the NBA is structured, draft picks can't officially be traded until the new "league year" starts officially in July. Therefore the team that orginally owned the pick (in this case Brooklyn) has to make the pick. In this situation, New Orleans calls Brooklyn and tells them who to draft. When the league year officially starts, NAW's draft rights get sent to NO and he officially signs his contract

Does that mean that he can't start working with the Pelicans yet?

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Not until July 6th when the trade is officially processed. Shouldn't be a big deal. He'll only miss like a day of Summer League which starts July 5th (and maybe none at all depending if NO plays a game on the first day). But he's a 1st round pick anyway, meaning he's guaranteed a roster spot, so his SL performance isn't going to determine if he makes the team or not. For players of his stature, SL is more of an NBA boot camp to get them some conditioning, acclimate them to some basics and terminology of the team, etc.

For 2nd rounders (who have non-guaranteed contracts) or undrafted players (like Justin Robinson with the Wizards), SL is their chance to show off and impress a team in hopes of getting a spot on the main roster come Fall.

This is a result of the Lakers-Pelicans trade for AD

The Pelicans and then Atlanta agreed to help the Lakers by pushing back the trade date to July 6th or 7th, allowing the Lakers to gain a few million dollars more in cap space after the trade

Neither team had to do this, but I think the Pelicans were agreeable since the Lakers gave them so many players and #1 draft picks and swaps over the next 6 years, and Atlanta probably did it because it doesn't affect them to wait six more days really, and ATL will possibly get some cash or some other concession from the Lakers, haven't heard anything about that though.

If the AD trade date was pushed back to July 30th it would have given the Lakers a few million more in cap space, but that was too far away since teams want their picks to play in the summer league in July.

Lakers will also try to get AD to pass on his $4million trade bonus so they can use that money to sign other players - AD will easily get that money back in endorsements and other promotional considerations so I think he'll probably be advised to let it go to help the team, but who knows, $4mil is $4mil. I've heard he'll be in the new SpaceJam movie so he'll get his money one way or another.

I'm sorry but the NBA draft trades are silly just say who drafted the man I've been confused where NAW is going.

All said I hope he beats out lonzo ball and gets a starting gig

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

They play different positions

First Hokie picked in the first round in years and he's from Canada...go figure

I don't get it. Does that mean anything? NAW was an incredibly talented player who helped us make a sweet 16 and heaped praise on our school and program leading up to being a 1st round pick.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Seriously. The kid was as good an ambassador for VT hoops as we could have possibly asked for. Excellent player, great character, well spoken, Bilas even highlighted he fact that this was our second first round pick and said it in a very complimentary way to NAW.

Who cares where he was from.

2 straight NCAA bids
Sweet 16 Appearance
First round pick
Helped turn VT into a program where being in the discussion as a legit basketball school is real.

He chose us, and has taken every opportunity to say how much he loved being a part of Hokie Nation

So you're saying he's the next Steve Nash. Not sure that's the best comparison in talents, but I'll take it.

Go Pelicans...I guess.

As a Pelicans fan, I am fuckin excited for us getting NAW.

Aww NAW

And as a little gravy on top, you also got the top NBA prospect in almost 20 years.

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

It's actually a good spot for him, especially for HokieNation that want to watch him in the pros. Because NO has Zion, they are going to get a lot of nationally televised games. Now if you're a nerd like me, you already had NO pegged a must watch League Pass team but for those don't shell out the cash for League Pass, you will still get to see NAW and the Pelicans plenty on TV

Hadn't thought of this angle, but you know ESPN is going to get Zion in as much as they can

That's one goddamned creepy baby.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Justin Robinson has been signed by the Wizards

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Technically their G-League team the Go-Go. If he plays well enough in Summer League, there's a chance he might make the Wiz roster. My guess here is they might put him on a two way contract (deal that keeps him in the G-League with the option to call up. It's a development deal that doesn't affect the team's main roster limit)

https://twitter.com/CandaceDBuckner/status/1141932927984570368?s=19

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Med got a spot on Brooklyn's summer league roster.

Still an uphill climb for him but he should easily get an opportunity overseas if he can't make a roster.

As an aside, Zach LeDay is current killing it overseas, named an all star in the Greek League for EuroLeague team Olympiacos

Hmmm... let's see... the Pacific Division now has the three top teams in the league playing against each other:

Since 2000, at least one of - the LA Lakers (7series, 5wins), Lebron James (9series, 3wins), Kawhi Leonard (3series, 2wins), or the Golden State Warriors (5series, 3wins) - have been in the NBA Championship EVERY YEAR except 2

The past 9 years, since 2011, Lebron (Miami) lost 1 & won 1, then split 1 & 1 against Kawhi (Spurs), and Lebron (Cleveland) faced GSW 4 times winning 1, GSW winning 3, and Kawhi (Toronto) won a 2nd title against GSW

I guess it's better than Kawhi going to the Lakers in the end

Parity

FYI

Justin Robinson and the Wizards are currently playing a Summer League game on ESPN against the Pelicans. NAW isn't playing for the Pels seeing as the trade he was a part of just got processed today

Just turned my TV and I see 5 (wearing 7). Came on here to make sure it had been reported.

perentes is playing for the Pelicans. Seems like old times.

.
.and Whit puts on his batting gloves and steps up to the plate....

J-Rob has 14 points

Finished with 15 pts, 4 rbs, 3 assists, 2 stls and a block. I try pretty hard not to be bias when watching my teams or in this case, Hokies playing the pros, so objectively saying, I thought he was pretty darn good out there. He was in control of the offense the entire time. Made several good passes and few others that were the right reads but mishandled by the receiver. Defensively, he smoothly navigated the necessary switches and was rarely out of place. He did have a couple of bad shot decisions, but other than that, I thought he played a very good and mature game. He didn't look like a complete rookie. He looked more like a year 2 guy coming back to play in Summer League. He should have a legit shot at getting playing time on the Wiz's main roster this year, especially given how poor it is overall.
