2019 NBA Finals open thread

WARRIORS. RAPTORS.

Will Steve Kerr's dynasty continue, even with Kevin Durant injured? Or will Kawhi Leonard lead the complete and defensively tenacious team from Canada to victory?

Who ya got?

Fun fact: first NBA finals game to be held outside of the US ever.
Fun fact #2: Drake is rocking a signed Dell Curry Raptors jersey for game 1.

The only reason I have any interest is because of Steph.

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

Like most basketball, I just watch the final scores after the fact, but it was fun to wake up to "Raptors Win" if just to see something I didn't expect.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

I'm going to be in the Oakland area Wednesday night for work, wonder what I could scalp a ticket for? Secondary market right now shows cheapest tickets around $500

WE THE NORTH

The Warriors are just so much more fun to watch with Kevin Durant out. Way less isolation, Stephen Curry is a better player it seems, and I'm also just not a big KD fan after he left OKC to join the team that eliminated him.

Dynasties always come to an end whether it's just age (20th century Lakers and Celtics and MJ's Bulls), clashing egos (early 2000 Lakers), or a player returning to his home (2010-2014 Heat). What happened to the Warriors was truly the most unfortunate way for a dynasty to end though.

I have actively rooted against the Warriors since the Warriors went 73-9 and really started to hate them once KD joined. I thought it ruined the NBA. Even when LeBron joined Wade and Bosh in Miami, they didn't dominate the way Golden State has. Then they add Boogie Cousins this season? What a joke.

With that being said, you NEVER like to see players get injured. Unfortunately, Klay and KD suffered two of the worst injuries a basketball player can suffer with the torn ACL and ruptured achilles respectively. I didn't think KD was coming back anyway, and Klay's status was also up in the air, but now it looks like it doesn't even matter, at least for next season.

Congrats to the Raptors. They're a team of extremely likeable guys who played hard on the defensive end and shared the ball on the offensive end. Kawhi Leonard might be the most likeable superstar of all time, and he now has a legitimate case for being the top player in the NBA. I'm also happy for Kyle Lowry who has suffered so many heartbreaking defeats in the playoffs and has generally been labeled as a regular season all star only. He was phenomenal last night.

This might be exactly what the NBA needed. I lived for the NBA playoffs since I began watching back in 2004. I loved the upsets such as the Magic beating the Cavs back in 2009, stars being born such as Dwyane Wade back in 2006, and the intense elimination games. We began losing that here in the last few years. I hate that players had to be injured in the process, but the NBA should be very interesting next season, so as long as Kawhi doesn't join LeBron in LA.

He had one of the greatest playoff runs of all time, is first team all NBA defense every season, can score at will, grabs rebounds (board man gets paid), and has taken down two dynasties en route to a finals MVP both times. LeBron is still probably the best player in the NBA, but if I had to pick a close second, it would be Kawhi.

Kawhi is in the conversation for best in the world, yes. That's not what I found confusing though

How is he not likeable exactly?

It's less of how is he not likeable and more of how is he likeable.

It just seems like everyone was rooting for him. Every superstar in the NBA has a base that hates him for some reason. Tough to find one for Kawhi. Yeah, there are Spurs fans who hate him, but we saw in this series what happens when a player plays through an injury even when he knows his body isn't right. He's easily the least hated star in the NBA in my opinion.

I don't think anyone is saying that they don't like him, just that there is not much of a personality to like.

I'm not really talking about the personality so much. And more personality has been revealed lately. "Board man gets paid." He just plays the game well, doesn't antagonize anyone, and has taken down two of the most unpopular dynasties in NBA history.

The same way Tim Duncan is everyone's all time favorite player. He emotes so well

Unpopular & triggering opinion here: I don't like him at all & think he's a douche. Additionally, I don't even think he's "the best in the world." Talented? Yes. Elite player? Of course. All-star pro? Absolutely. But not "the best." In fact, in many ways, I'd say he's somewhat overrated. There. I said it. Go ahead. Commence au downvotes.

UVA is a great place to take a dump.

Justify it somehow.

He's an elite defender with a deadly mid-range shot and knows how to finish. Easily a top 5 player...wait justify the opposite, you can't.

I cannot justify putting his name in the same category as: James, Wade, Curry, Durant, Iverson, Bryant, Harden, Westbrook, Shaq, Jordan, etc.

UVA is a great place to take a dump.

Kawhi right now is objectively better than Wade at any point in his career. Would take Kawhi right now over peak Westbrook and Iverson. Those are the only three on your list I'd take an objection with.

I would take the following guys over Kawhi just for next year: Giannis, AD, Curry, Harden and playoff LeBron. Add KD if he was 100% healthy. Would take Kawhi over 100% healthy Embiid but could see the argument against.

Kawhi will be a top 25 player all-time when he retires assuming no catastrophic injuries.

Really, Harden? I think Kwahi would be my first pick next year if I to make a team from scratch. He has the best most rounded game. He could play with any one. Harden needs the ball, Curry needs ball movement. Giannas would be an arguement for 1st, but none of those guys play defense like Kwahi.

What Harden and Curry can do on offense supersedes the defensive delta IMHO. Kawhi is better on ball defender against wings but Giannis has the ability to play "5" and be a rim protector.

I interpreted 'likable' as 'down to earth'

For a person to become the most likeable superstar of all time, wouldn't he first have to be likeable?

Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hi. Tech, Tech, V.P.I.
Sola-Rex, Sola-Rah. Polytech- Vir-gin-I-a.
Ray, Rah, V.P.I. Team! Team! Team!

How is Kawhi not likeable?

I don't think that anyone hates him (outside of San Antonio), but to say that he's super likeable...ehh. I mean, I thoroughly enjoy watching him play. He's just...boring? Idk.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I think respectable describes him better

"with all due respect, and remember I’m sayin’ it with all due respect, that idea ain’t worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin’ it on" - Ricky Bobby

Haha, this is all I meant. I just haven't seen any evidence that he's a likable person. Haven't seen any evidence that he's dislikeable either, but if he was the most likeable superstar ever, I would have expected to see something resembling charisma by this point.

It just seems like he's a very much an introvert and it can come off as awkward or weird. Maybe it's the fact that society demands our superstars to be charismatic on top of being athletically talented, but to me his strangeness is extremely endearing and likeable.

I'll take his demeanor over Lebron's any day of the week lol

Same tbh

I mean, I like Kawhi, but his legitimately a weird dude.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

This is a fake story.

We put the K in Kwality

well damn, I got hoodwinked by the fake news media. thanks for the heads up.

I really wished it was true. If Kawai was a social media guy, his post championship presser would have be great if he just said "Apple time...Apple time".

Unfortunately, I think the Raptors win will always have an * by it in the books. The Warriors have been absolutely destroyed by injuries this year. Otherwise the raptors would not have won. The better team lost. Consider they lost last night by 4 points with the #1 and #3 scorers down.

The same can be said about quite a few of the Warriors championships too then. Cavs were without Kyrie and Love in 2016, a series in which the Cavs were up 2-1. Then last year they were down 3-2 to the Rockets before CP3 got hurt. You can also mention Kawhi getting hurt a few years ago when the Spurs were up by 20 in game one.

Point is, Warriors have been the beneficiaries of a lot of injuries. Would they have won with Klay last night? Yes. Would they have won the whole series with KD? Yes. But would they have won all those championships had all those injuries not happen to their opponents? Not every one of them.

Did somebody say Steph Curry? I'm ready!

15 Straight

Personally, I loved how, all series long, the network kept pounding on the fact that Oracle was shutting down, and the Warriors would love to send it out with a win.

Final Score...
Raptors -3
Oracle Arena- 0

I do feel for Klay and KD though. Geezus. The Co-Mothers of all basketball injuries strike a team's 2 best players in a span of 4 days. That would be the equivalent of the Patriots losing Brady in the wild card, then Gronk in the divisional game.

Kawhi is very likeable to me in that he's so serious about basketball that he's kind of a weirdo, and I have a soft spot for weirdos. He's not going to the Lakers. Anthony Davis to the Lakers is a done deal. Period. I'd like to see Kawhi stay with Toronto. There's a good mix of youth/veterans, everybody is a threat to score the basketball, and they would hand him the keys to the kingdom as far as a contract. If he needs to get back home to Cali, do a 5-6 year deal with the Raptors, make your grandkids rich, and then wrap it up with the Warriors, Clips, or LakeShow.

Leonard. Duh.

I learned from this series the first ever NBA game took place in Canada Toronto in fact in 1946.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.
