Let me preface this by saying that I don't think it's absolutely necessary as a head coach to always give credit to the other team's performance during the post game press conference, but I feel like it happens more often times than not, especially after an underdog played a great game against your team. I certainly don't think the coach has to go as far as to ooze and gush over the other team's performance to the point of discrediting the way your team fought, but it just seems like the customary opening of "Give a lot of credit to __________." is part of the typical tip-of-the-cap coach speak during these post game pressers when a team plays you that close.
With that said, I was a little surprised and quite frankly upset that during Brian Kelly's press conference he didn't say one thing about Virginia Tech's performance and just how close of a game we gave them. To me (and I admittedly may be looking into this way too much), it seemed like he almost purposely avoided saying anything about the Hokies' performance and the game they gave them.
I will say that during his Monday press conference the week leading up to the game, he had a really nice analysis of what he saw from Virginia Tech and the way the defense had locked in since the Duke performance along with the way the offense was progressing with Hooker and Patterson. All this to say, maybe he's not the petty, arrogant guy I see him as and just wanted to focus on his team's response to a lot of adversity over the last week plus during the post game press conference.
I am curious though what TKP thinks. Did anyone else notice this that watched the post game press conference? Do you think a coach owes it the other team to tip their cap after a game like this as some form of unwritten coach-etiquette? Am I over-analyzing this and need to move the heck on (very possible)?
