I was saying the same thing a couple months ago! It'll be really interesting to see if they spin it to where the real cause of the Chernobyl accident was a secret government attempt to open a portal to the upside down.

Awesome, best thing on Netflix

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

So is Hopper alive?

Remains to be seen. They didn't show him dying like they did everyone else that got killed near the reactor

All signs point to yes. Either in Russia or the upside down. My vote is the upside down. I think the American is the scientist from S1 that everyone forgot about. But Harbour was posting number on instagram, that when combined into coordinates, pointed right to the place in Russia they showed in the end credit scene.

I also believe the American to be the scientist. I think Hopper is alive too. Casting out a character that likable and important just seems unrealistic.

I think so too. Even if they had originally written for him to sacrifice himself at that point, after season 2, they would have had to change the storyline to keep him alive. I think they did and that's why he was featured way too much in season 3 to actually go out like that.

Yep. All signs point to him playing a role in season 4. It will be interesting if the season is set in Russia though. I think that would ensure that the American is Hopper rather than the scientist. I think they would have an easier time casting the scientist out, although we weren't given an answer as to what happened to him.

Maybe he is the American, but I foresee a reveal where the American is the scientist and then Hopper appears later.

I think the whole, "We're not in Hawkins anymore" schtick is because the kids end up getting back together in Russia. I don't think time travel is going to come into play. Seems to sharky-jumpy to me.

It's a very 80's thing. They love the 80's that's my guess, and then the clock too.

Do they tease release date yet?

The entire time I was thinking "don't be ____, don't do it, don't show me _____"

Then they did. Sigh.

I feel like its barely a spoiler at this point, just with all the speculation thats already been out there about it. While I would prefer it have remained at least "secret" till the season, if anything I think this will help boost ratings as he is probably everyone's favorite character on the show (or tied with Eleven)

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

He's a fan favorite in the circles that you and I probably discuss the show (adults/young adults), and that definitely makes him an overall fan favorite, but there is nobody on that show close to how popular Eleven is when you account for all demographics. Millie Bobby Brown has almost 32m instagram followers, the next closest kid (Finn) is at about half that. Eleven is almost certainly the majority of viewers favorite character.

I agree it's not a spoiler (the most strongly hinted at and worst kept secret type situation), and Netflix quite frankly has too much invested in the show now because it is such a money maker for them. I think having him actually die would have been a bold and better decision for the stakes and emotional value of the ending of S3 (and the show as a whole), but I understand why they don't want to kill off a fan favorite. I'm still extremely worried that they will drag it on too long as has happened to many popular shows over the years.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

Good point on the social media stuff. I've literally never used Instagram so I don't even think about that for the most part.

As to your last point, I would say if any outfit would not drag on a mega popular show for too long, it would actually be Netflix. They have a pretty good track record of making sure shows end, regardless of their viewing numbers or popularity. Primarily because their model requires shows that bring new viewers consistently, not just a large base of old ones. Not saying ST doesn't, but at some point the new sign ups watching the show won't be worth the production costs. This is also a big reason why they don't release their viewership numbers, because shareholders care about that a lot more than Netflix internals do I would wager.

If you really think about it, I could name a fair number of shows on Netflix that I wish I had more of (Sense8 being a prime example), versus shows on the platform that have gone on "too long".

I have tried really hard to get into this show, and I just can't. The first few episodes were pretty freaky and cool, then it lost me.

I'm confused, am I supposed to downvote this or not?

In this situation, you can downvote an opinion.

Is that the actor that plays Jaqen H'ghar in there as well?

Although it took place in 1959, it would be cool if they could tie in the Dyatlov Pass incident.

If you are looking for viewing that has some allusions to that, watch The Kettering Incident on Netflix. Super weird Tasmanian show

I'm sure there are plenty of weird shit happening in the USSR during the 80s enough to reference.
