TKP - Gamer's Lounge: Winter 2021

No, seriously...because where the hell else would I start. The KFConsole is real and the specs aren't actually anything to laugh at.

"It includes an ASUS-built hot-swappable NVIDIA GPU and Intel CPU (though Cooler Master didn't specify which), along with a 1TB Seagate NVME SSD. Cooler Master claims that it's VR ready, supports ray tracing and can handle 4K TV gaming and frame rates up to 240 fps."

Lets not forget about the star of the show - the chicken warming chamber. Why you would EVER need a chicken warming chamber in your pc/gaming console is far beyond me....but yall got options now.

I feel like...in 50+ years from now, when someone is watching a re-run of one of those shows where people hawk antiques, this item is going to show up and sell for a ton. Then, said person is going to wonder exactly what the hell was going on in 2020 when KFC decided to jump into the gaming industry...and there will be no viable excuse.

So, ...yeah, moving on then.

So..was Cyberpunk everything you dreamed of?

From Cyberpunk to chump in less than a week after 8 years of development. This game is riddled by damn near every bug imaginable. Even microsoft is issuing refunds, but I believe that it's still available for purchase digitally for the xbox (congrats guys, finally got that exclusive!) Truth be told, it IS a fun game..on next gen/pc. I love the feel and look of the city, the few characters I've met so far have been interesting, and there's variety in the gameplay but I completely understand why so many people are angry right now. How can you work on a game for 8 years for current gen systems, then release a game is is neither truly next gen or even playable on current gen? I only wish it were a bigger company being dragged right now (EA,Ubi, etc...all you dickheads that release these incomplete ass games)

And the search continues

For those of you looking...how goes the search for next gen/upgraded parts? Still bleak? Walmart is trying to alleviate that, and combating bots too.

Games, games, games..

Look, I aint gonna lie to you folk. I had a whole damn games list for most anticipated games of 2021, but then my laptop died and none of that shit was saved...so its not happening now. Use google.

Anyway, like always, discuss down below what you're playing or most looking forward to! For all my Dead Space brethren I leave you...with this...(from the same mind that brought us the first Dead Space!)

Looks so, so good.

Happy Holidays, Hokies! Happy Gaming!

..warm my chicken in my gaming console. The fuck is wrong with people?

Oh!! Not to forget this one!!!

What can you tell me about this game and the first? I'm interested but don't know if I want to spring for them.

Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert advice.

No problem. Survival horror game (so you have to maintain your stats - eating, drinking, hot/cold environment, etc) with heavy emphasis on exploration. Crash land on an island with basically nothing but a plane axe and from there you're basically free to do as you please.

You can get really creative in how you build defenses to ward off the increasingly hostile natives(I'll have to link some of my builds), you can hunt for food, gather resources, and search the island and it's caves to figure out it's mysteries and find weapons. The Forest also supports multiplayer and VR(on pc).

Playing with one or two friends, going in completely blind, is where this game really shines. I've never had so much fun as I did playing with my 2 friends over the summer.

I also had fun playing solo. Built a houseboat and lived on that for over a year in-game days. Would carry enough supplies to build a dock for wherever I wanted to port, then I'd get what I need and get out.

I also started building some fun buildings/torture houses... Really fun game.

Thank you good sir! Appreciate the quick response and the detail. Based on what I've read and what you outline above, I'm going to dive in. I love that it let's you make it whatever you want to be.

Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert advice.

This is from a while ago.

Just a short clip of me dicking around in the forest. I was pretty good at building by this point, so I put together a nice little resort/lodge that ran from a snow peak mountain top in the north all the way down to the beach at the bottom of the map.

It was really cool... Took a lot of resources and time though. I ended up having to build a logging/timber camp quite a bit away since I initially depleted this immediate area of all it's wood. So I'd chop a bunch of trees, load up my ship, haul to all to this dock, and build until I needed more wood. Lengthier vid but finished build

Anyway, all that building and I ended up making the world's worst water slide.

Incredible. I just finished Fallout 4 for the first time and was surprised at how much I loved building, so I'm sure this game is right up the same alley.

Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert advice.

Just picked up a few games in the Steam winter sale.

-Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. On a bit of a Stars Wars kick since I'm watching Mandalorian now for the first time (no spoilers pls, only finished season 1).
-Fallout New Vegas with all of the DLCs. Planning on researching and adding essential mods.
-Disco Elysium. Will wait until March when the free extra content with full voiceovers comes out.

I just finished Fallen Order, it was a very fun game. The combat is fine (you get to force throw stormtroopers off of cliffs, which is all you really need in a Star Wars game), but it's really an exploration/physics puzzle game at heart not a fighting game. Also I thought the story and voice acting were excellent.

I agree. Fallen Order was really enjoyable, and I normally don't like genres outside of sports and simulations

Warning- Filter lost.

"Look at this... This is just spectacular.... These people are losing their minds"

Just beat it 5 minutes ago. I enjoyed the game up until the final boss and that just ruined it for me honestly. The platform we were on had invisible walls that the boss would jump and bounce off of, homing grab attacks where the boss would grab me from stupid angles and distances, attacks that would take off neither health nor stamina. Just overall a completely wonky fight compared to everything else in the game.

The final boss is definitely a bit wonk, and hard, but I think due to the way the endgame is supposed to go, and WHO the final boss is (I'll be careful of spoilers even though it is a 2 years old game at this point), its supposed to be difficult. But I do think it was the best game to attempt being a force user/jedi perspective since the Dark Forces series (though I still think that hit it a bit better)

I dunno, that first time Cal effortlessly deflected a blaster bolt back to kill a stormtrooper, and then I Force Pulled his body and gave him a saber to the midsection, I was like "I'm a Jedi ya'll"

Yeah I had a similar reaction. For all of the frustration against some of the creatures that you fight, deflecting laser blasts and and using force powers against stormtroopers put a big, goofy grin on my face every time.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

The stormtroopers' comments really nailed it too.

It makes it so fun. When one says I've got him then you force throw him like a pawn and it's hilarious.

That's not really a fight though, it's more like an interactive cutscene. There's really only two ways that fight is going to end and victory isn't one of them.

So I'm about 30 hours in on CB2077, on PC, and I feel like it is the Witcher 3 but in 2077. I haven't played much of the main missions, just got into Act 2 I believe. Does it have bugs, yes, is it playable on PC, yes. I've been having fun playing it and it gets better as you go. I remember getting my butt kicked by the world at first in Wither but after leveling up you get to feel better about walking around in the world and exploring. Also it is one of the best looking video game cities I have seen, take that with a grain of salt since I didn't play games for about 15 to 20 years. I'm really looking forward to come back to this when I get a GPU with ray-tracing and can handle more than high in 1080p.

So I sold NCAA 14 bout a year and a half ago and recently got the itch to start playing it again. This fucking game is going for 90-200$ on FB market place and ebay... gamestop has it listed at 60$ but zero stock. Ugh why did a bunch of no name NFL failures have to sue EA claiming PS2 pixels looked like them SMFH.

NBA failures, it was Ed O'Bannon.

Also, EA could make a game, they just choose not to because they can't exploit it like Madden with micro transactions because they think people want named players.

I mean, they added MTX to NCAA14 in Ultimate Team mode, and then killed it after a year. And instead of current named players, they had a large group of former players to get cards for. The perceived inability to implement MTX is not the reason they canned the game - it has everything to do with the O'Bannon lawsuit and the implications therein.

They really have no choice but to wait for the NIL legislation to go through, and even then they might decide that it's too expensive to pay that many thousands of players.

They could randomize players on every team and then no likeness for dynasty mode. No issue with not paying players

They cannot do ultimate with former players at all now without paying players. Those likeness rights were assumed to come with the schools licensing/ncaa licensing.

I'm so happy I bought it digitally before it came off the market. The aftermarket for it is insane in the off-season the price will drop

so I booted up Cities: Skylines again the other day. I really need to get this out of my system before I go back to work, because it is a huge timesink. I haven't stayed up till 3am playing video games in a while.

I like to call this Civ syndrome. You just keep playing one more turn until it's the middle of the night.

It's Time to go to Work

So close to Nukes...just one more turn...then Ghandi dies!

Currently playing: Immortals Fenyx Rising, and stardew valley

Was playing: Cyberpunk 2077 but gonna wait till it's truly next gen..

I'm going to n highly recommend Immortals for everyone looking to scratch that Breath of the Wild itch. Seriously, it's like BotW but with better mechanics. It's crazy.

I need to finish up Cyberpunk, haven't seen any game breaking bugs (this is PC) except one where I only lost 30 seconds because of checkpoints but nothing that made me refund it. I've heard that the main story is short compared to other RPGs but one thing to remember it's based off a Tabletop RPG back in the mid/late 80s where the campaigns can be short, it's just there's always a murderhobo player, stupid lawful good player, stupid neutral player, and stupid evil player in the group that makes it longer.

I just forgot Cyberpunk because I wanted to finish Persona 5 Royal, then got C&C Red Alert 3 and C&C Remastered (original and Red Alert, remaster Red Alert 2 you COWARDS), my brother got me back into Mechwarrior Online, while streaming some random Holdfast: Nations at War linebattles mercing for a group because of their Civil War mod that is awesome and fun.

"Oi! What's a Horkie"
"I am ya Grot!"

"Horkies were made for two fings foighten' and winnen'" - Horkie Warboss

"That Gritty git doesn't exactly look like a Horkie, but by Gork and Mork it acts like one!"-Random Horkie Boy

Picked up C&C remastered while on sale. Enjoying playing these games again at a much clearer resolution, though the red alert campaign is harder than I remember being as a kid. I agree though a Red Alert 2 remaster is what I really want. Best game of the series IMO.

Finally got the X. It feels amazing. Much smoother and quicker. I spend a majority of my time on rocket league or CoD so I'm looking forward to a next-gen game that appeals to me or just wait until November for Halo.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Family got Farming Simulator 19 so the kids can drive around the tractors and ride the horses. It's actually a great way to relax at night before bed.

I should have bought a 1660 Ti when they were sitting at $250ish, now they're all out of stock and if they are available they're going for $400+!

I'll wait 6-8mo until all the bugs are ironed out on CP2077. I've got a lot of other games sitting in the Steam queue that just aren't that playable with my 7870 from 2013...

Yesterday I picked up a used copy of Ncaa football 13 at gamestop got it home created a new Dynasty with my coach named Shane Beamer as the OC at SMU and had the goal of building my way up to receive an offer from VT in a few seasons. I start my recruiting board and get to week 1 and play through the 1st quarter then the game crashes. Long story short the game was scratched all to hell and I had to return it for a refund because no Gamestop around Richmond had a copy I could swap it for, the closest copy was in FairFax 2 hours away and Gamestop no longer ships products store to store anymore because of the pandemic.

Even with the backlog of GamePass games I have, for whatever reason I decided to download and start Control the other night.

What a crazy, entertaining game. Really satisfying combat system.

Trying to decide now on diving into Wasteland 3 or Divinity 2

I recommended Control a while back. Very fun game.

Hopefully they released it with the dlc, fun Alan wake connection

I bought the ultimate version for $20 days before I found out it would be on gamepass. The gamepass version didnt include the DLC but I would've paid $20 for it.

The DLC isn't included. But I'm having enough work wrapping my head around the story as it is.

Pretty ambitious game when you think about.

Edit: Mad Max is also on sale for $8 right now on XBox. I wouldn't say the game is underrated, as the reviews are pretty good. It just happened to launch the same week as MGSV, and got lost in the shuffle.

Okay peeps I'm gonna try and see if I can snag a series x any good sites or twitter pages to follow to help find one?

No problem. Don't forget about the Xbox series subreddit! Users usually post when sales open up.

Well I picked up a copy of NCAA 06 for Xbox on Ebay just gotta wait until Thursday-Saturday for delivery. Looking forward to playing with MV5, Eddie Royal, Xavier Adibi, and Vince Hall once again! NCAA 06 had one of if not the best rated Hokies squad on an EA Sports game.

To keep the Star Wars theme going, I just downloaded Knights of the Old Republic as part of the steam sale. I have never played it and I'm very interested to learn about Darth Revan (not even worried that it's not canon 😃)

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

Still the best SW game ever made IMO.

X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and the Dark Forces/Jedi Academy series are all classic obviously.

But KOTR is the best. I still keep it on my iPhone and play every now and again even though I bought it for the original Xbox the week it came out.

Revan is an amazing character. And canon btw, mentioned in the Visual Dictionary for The Rise of Skywalker which is official.

Do yourself a favor and don't look for any spoilers

Noted, I've avoided them for over 17 years so far! Lol

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

I honestly don't know how anyone that Internets for this long wouldn't have seen spoilers for it by accident.

Well done. You will really love the play through then. The game also has the greatest droid in SW history not named R2

I've got a big Game Pass backlog but I think I may fire up a Dark Side run on my phone

In all honestly, I'm sure I read a synopsis or something over the years or when I was in college, its just been so long I've already forgotten lol

Agree with this perspective. KoTOR/XvT and Dark Forces series are the classic golden age of Star Wars gaming

Rogue Squadron is my favorite classic although I have a lot of fond memories of TIE Fighter chugging along on my crappy PC

Hokie Club member since 2017

I always kinda forget the Rogue Squadron PC since that was all predominantly GameCube et al (but yes was ported to PC). But those were good quality games as well.

Downloaded and played an hour or two of Star Wars: Squadrons. I think this is going to scratch my star wars itch just fine.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

The campaign is fantastic and I highly recommend doing that in it's entirety first to learn the game and by the end you'll understand all the functions of the game. Getting in a bomber for a bombing run the first time is next level child heaven

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Yeah, Squadrons takes a bit more time to get used to than maybe the XvT series, but once you get into it, it does feel pretty natural. Definitely takes a bit more skill though, and sometimes the balance is hard (I feel like when I play as an Imp I get blown out pretty quickly comparted to when I play as the NR), but otherwise very enjoyable. I was definitely happy with the new DLC ships

It takes time to get used to it if you knew how battlefront used to play. Learn to use the throttle and find your favorites in the campaign and start to get used to them. I thought the imp ships would be weak with no shields but they are so nimble it makes up for it. The rebel bomber though is op

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Is it difficult to move up in rank during the 8 week operation? I just finished the story mode and I'm working on fleet battles now.

Honestly have no clue I only play the campaign and don't really dip into multiplayer that much at all

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Doesn't seem too bad if you play enough. Feels very COD like et. al

What have you been playing it on, xbox/ps4 or pc? I want to get it but I want to wait until I have a ps5 and I can play it on a 4k tv. Right now all I have is my pc and monitors which cant do 4k

They'll really get after ya

I've played it on my xbox one x and it's glorious. Without being able to track resolution and frame rate I have no idea if waiting on a ps5 is a big difference. I play it on a 120hz 1440p curved monitor and it looks beautiful to me

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

ah word, my friend has it on VR and he absolutely loves it

Anyone tried the new PlayStation headphones? Needed a new pair anyways, wondering if it's worth the price tag rn

I've got a pair and I think they're decent. I'm not an audiophile or anything and don't have another pair of similar headphones to compare them to though. They do, however, fit just a tad bit snug and can make it uncomfortable on my ears after wearing for a couple hours.

In everything I've read my takeaway is this: they're good for their price point but for a bit more you can get better.

I think I just broke NCAA 14. Last season my QB was #1 in passing yards and rushing yards. Now he is gone and QBs run the show so to speak. My RB is the top RB in rushing yards and is 19th behind 18 QBs. I am the only RB in the top 30

I... have never encountered anything quite that ridiculous. I mean, scrambling QBs are a scourge in that game, but they aren't usually that pervasive.

Did anyone else have an issue with brightness in Cyberpunk2077? I find it hard to see whenever inside and generally think the game was very over hyped. I've only put in about 10 hours but find the game dialogue very long and overall gameplay too complicated compared to other 1st person shooter games/open world games.

I've already gone back to Halo

Pour some Beer on it

Ten hours is about what I put in too, I think. Maybe more.

But cut scene after cut screen after cut scene was a turnoff.

If anyone thought that it was hopeless to get a new graphics card anytime soon (at MSRP).... you're right

Damn Crypto Miners

Side note - I was surprised that the article did jump to the conclusion that the spike in crypto prices directly coincided with the release timeframe for the Nvidia RTX 3xxx lineup. Its a little too coincidental that prices spiked and have continued to rise as the new power in GPUs came out.

edit: fixed the link

I think the clickable link formatting is a little broken.

The GPU shortage is disappointing because I was thinking about stimulating the economy by buying a 3070 if I could find one. Guess not...

best thing to do is get on one of the auto-notify lists (e.g., EVGA) but only if you are committed to purchase when your name comes up. I have no idea when I'm going to get called, but I'm prepped to make that investment in a new 3070 when they come calling... other than that, i'm not really going to waste time going to Microcenter and standing in line to get one. I'll make the occasional trip by the GPU aisle whenever I head over there, but my hopes of seeing a card in stock (Nvidia or AMD) are pretty much non-existent.

Best buy had a release on the 3000 series and I had a 3080 in the cart before it sold out, shit.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I got my 3070 from EVGA and it was the best. Getting the email saying they had one for me and knowing I had 8 hours was great, I could afford to wait until after work rather than panicking at my desk.

How does one sign up for this?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Go to EVGAs website, find the product you like, and sign up for the little "notify me" button or whatever.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

WHY ARENT ALL THE COMPANIES DOING THIS WTF

How long did you have to wait for just curious?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

My slot was very very early after the cards were announced on EVGA's website, so I got one like a few days after release. I have no idea what the time is for turnaround if you sign up now, but at least you know you have a slot and don't have to rush.

As for why more companies don't do this? They just don't care. Even if the cards get bought up by bots it makes no difference to them, they're still getting their money.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Yup sucks but they're selling and the companies won't care but I signed up for both the fan cooled 3070 cards they have and will be eagerly refreshing the email every hour until whenever I snag one. My pc is online and signed into all accounts and at the ready and whenever I hear a twitter notification or email ping I run to it. My wife is begining to worry for my mental health but is happy for the exercise I'm getting.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Its not that they don't care, its that scarcity is good for business, they actually want a lack of products. This way they can keep prices higher longer.

And I am just one person, but Microsoft faced up, cause if I could have found an xbox, I'd have an xbox, but I can't, and there isn't a reason to really get one right now other than I'm on the original xbox one. So I'll wait until price drop.

Yup they don't care too much as they still get their piece of the pie and they don't care how really. Im in the EVGA queue for a new GPU which could be a few months but atleast I can snag one then for MSRP and not pay an extortionate amount to a bot user. I would go for an xbox but they sell out so fast I can't ever even get to the site before they're gone so I'll go computer this time.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Scarcity is good for business for a lot of products. Video game hardware is not one of them, however.

That's what makes the scarcity strange. Microsoft/Sony usually take a loss (or a very minuscule profit) on the sale of every console. Software sales are really where the money is made.

So it behooves them to get as many consoles as they can into people's hands.

What software will I buy right now? Games are lacking right now. Cyberpunk was supposed to be a huge seller, but it didn't do so well on consoles (though xbox X is supposed to be okay) The there is always a lack of launch day titles.

Its probably better for ms and Sony to not take the loss right now since there aren't tons of games people will buy with it.

How I feel everytime I see Xbox tweeting about ambient shit while ignoring the console shortage

I'm on the notification lists for the 3000 cards and xbox as I have a friend who wants a card bad so I'm trying to help if I see one I'll grab him one.

There is no supersim in this version and in NCAA 11-14 when I did a non Hokies dynasty I only played offense. I'm not really looking to play crappy defense for a crappy team lol. Before the game scrached I had started a dynasty got through 3 games and was having a lot of fun wreaking havoc with Hall, Adibi, Tapp, Ellis, and Hamilton and had MV5 #2 in the Heisman race.

Nice Xbox drop on amazon at 5:09 am this morning only made it for a minute before selling out.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I've started playing through Unravel on Game Pass this week, and I actually like it a lot. It's not hard but it surprisingly calming and a feel-good game.

started playing through Hitman again the other day.

I love the problem solving and the multiple run-through challenges, but what really impresses me is the number of people crammed into it in certain missions. One of my biggest gripes about about most games where you are in a town or a city or whatever is just how few people there are and the Paris fashion show is just brimming with them. They don't do a lot, but it actually feels crowded.

The hitman series is one of my all time favorites. One of the few games that I can go back and replay a mission several times and not get bored because there are so many ways to do things. Sapienza and Marrakesh are my favorite on the first, and Miami and New York on Hitman 2

I recently added Philips Hue Play Lightbars, and an hmdi sync box to my cave, and lemme tell you...

I am quite pleased with the results.

I'll upload some pics and go into detail in a bit here

Would love to see the setup in action. I had been looking to add this to the gaming setup but I'd rather put that cash to a new GPU and upgrade the rig first. I've always wanted the ambient lighting to sync to the screen behind it but it's always been so pricey to do.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Pretty good shot of the Philips HDMI Sync Box in action for the first time while playing the PS5.

This shot came out gorgeous..so cool

Ambient lighting, I feel, makes a world of a difference.

That looks sweet. You've tempted me to do this too but it doesn't look like you can sync your smart tv to them. Since we use the smart tv apps for streaming I don't think it makes sense.

So jealous. I've come close to one on Asus but that site is so laggy its infuriating. Praying for a best buy drop as the amazon drops are getting wiped by bots.

All of this chatter about difficulties buying consoles and GPUs makes me glad that I'm content with my current setup (for now). Tackling my backlog of over a hundred games without really caring that I don't have the latest, greatest hardware.

Right now I'm playing Rimworld on PC, rotating through some Game Pass games on my XBone, and finally playing through Baldur's Gate on the Switch. Will probably (finally) start up Spiderman on the PS4 before too long, but my wife has been playing Control on itever since she got it for Christmas.

Anyone ever used the Microcenter in Fairfax before? Thinking about making a trip up to look at what the have as I've always heard good things for PC stuff.

Regularly. I'd say I'm there about twice a month. What are you looking for?

Graphics card is the main target I'd be interested in all pc parts though as I've got one I want to build but still waiting for the right time. Mainly I have a 970 I need to upgrade so I'm just curious if they ever get any stock on the newer cards

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

They do carry cards but it's pointless to head there on a weekend for a graphics card right now. What you have is more powerful than anything they are likely to have in stock. From what I understand you need to be there before they open to get in line to have any chance at a card.

I have family that might do it for a small fee but it may be worth it. I wonder what stock they get I feel like my luck theyd only have 3080s and 3090s instead of the 3070s. Had a few more in the cart but lost them all so far gotta say this process is a bit irritating.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

It really sucks, but your best bet is to add yourself to a waiting list online. I know EVGA has one for their line of Nvidia cards, but I don't know about anyone else.

I'm on the EVGA one for the 3070 black and ULTRA but those queues are moving at a snails pace so worst case I get my name called by june but its looking like longer than that at the moment. Really hoping production ramps up at some point but so far the outlook is bleak.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Can someone fill me in on why the graphics cards are such a hard get? Other than bots buying them up to sell at a premium for....reasons?

I get scarcity, but is there something out there that you need these things to play?

Bots play a major role along with scalpers it gets worse and worse. I have friends who have lucked out but all of them who were successful had to use bots of some kind simply due to how fast the bots and scalpers are grabbing every available piece of inventory. The other side is so many people now working/staying home alot has lead to an even bigger demand for not just the 3000 series but the 2000 series cards as well which the prices have gone skyhigh for even the 2000 series cards.
I may be wrong here but I also believe from a production standpoint the chipsets for the GPUs are all being made by 2 suppliers in Nvidia and AMD and alongside the console launches which both are using AMD chipsets those companies are struggling to produce enough to keep up with any demand.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Samsung is supplying the 3000 series chips while TSMC is basically supplying everything else except for ARM and Intel cpus. Supply chains have struggled the past year and there have been new hardware released that has had demand exceed expectations.

Nvidia said to expect a supply constraint till the end of their Q1, around the end of April. I'm sure that AMD is probably going to experience that for a little longer since there are more pots to allocate to for their chipsets.

I gave in and put my name in the queue for a card from EVGA. Just hope I get the email before the 4000 series cards are announced. /s

You can use the forum to track the email notification list. People post their times when emailed so you know how long you have to go in the queue and currently theyre still shooting out emails for preorders on the more popular GPU's so likely itll be a 3-4 month wait atleast.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Increases in demand at the consumer level are only a small portion of why these things are nigh impossible to obtain. The much bigger reason is that (for some reason) cryptocurrency process are skyrocketing again, so "miners" have bots running to snatch up cards whenever they become available, since more GPUs equals more mining equals more money.

I hadn't even thought about that. I guess I have been out of serious PC gaming for quite awhile, so when I think of high end GPU cards I don't associate them with mining. Seems like that would not be necessary

Makes sense though

GPUs offer much more performance per dollar than CPUs, when performing tasks that can be distributed among dozens (or more) processing cores, hence why the crypto miners are hoarding them so strongly.

Battlefront 2 Celebration edition is free on Epic Games store for PC people right now. I know its epic but its a free copy of BF2 and in its current state thats a hell of a deal.

only a couple hours left.... Galactic Civilizations 3 is up next this afternoon.

Last one. I swear. I'm so obsessed with these lights now though. I want to get a couple more bars for the back of my tv (I actually want the gradient strip but that's been sold out forever)

Then I'm looking to expand this idea beyond the man cave and add a few hue color/white bulbs to the living room area and hallway downstairs. Maybe even the loft area upstairs.

PS5's look like they are gone already... still Xbox consoles available.

Anyone on here get into Red Dead Online? I've gotten all the way through the RDR2 Story (though, only partially into the Epilogue) and have had some people toss the idea around of playing online. I'm looking into it, and it looks like the game can be quite a grind if you don't pay for gold bars. Is that pretty much the case? We kind of just want to get into it, and have a bit of wild west fun without being grief'd to death. How much fun can you really have with a bunch of low level people playing together?

"I have a PLAN. You just need to have a little goddamn faith, Whit. I just need. more. MONEY." - Justin van der Linde

I started playing with my brother a few weeks ago. We only have a handful of hours in it but we mostly just hunt and fish to get wagons full of gear you can trade or sell - but usually just try to avoid anyone trying to steal your gear which is both fun and frustrating. I like the hunting and fishing part plus you just get to dick around and do whatever. So we are basically a bunch of low level people playing together and have enjoyed most of it so far.

Great story on NPR this morning about how the microchip shortages that have caused issues with the production of the new gen systems and video cards is also causing significant lost profits for automobile manufacturers now too. GM projects $2B in lost profits just because they can't build enough of the in demand models due to lack of chips for the cars. Not just for the obvious parts (Nav systems, touchscreen, etc), but chips for the engines, seat sensors, all that stuff.

Just interesting how connected these industries have become due computers/semiconductor chips. Interestingly enough, I've had my car for 6 years now and have never had any serious mechanical issue, but I've had to bring it in over chip/sensor failures.

Just another reason to love old vehicles and systems that dont require a large number of chips to run. Still trying to snag a 3070 but after weeks of trying and hawking on all the notifications around nothing has worked and its beginning to feel fruitless. No end in sight for the chip shortage and with chinese new year so close the plants overseas will be on break for a week or two which will only worsen the global shortage.

I joined the EVGA notification queues a few weeks back, and have been monitoring their progress ever since, and the results are.... not great. Over the last 13 days, there is only one card whose queue has advanced more than 6 hours in terms of queue signup timestamp, and that one card (one of the 3070s) has advanced from October 31 to November 4.

At this rate, I'll probably be able to buy one in 2023 or so.

Been in the queue since early January and have been monitoring it on the EVGA forums since and its gotten so weak I've honestly quit checking as it will be years before they get to the 2021 dates. The hunt for a GPU is flat out soul sucking.

Now I'm in trouble, this stupid game is addictive.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

So due to no new hardware at the moment I've gotten sucked into messing with my wifes switch and now I'm all in on Breath of the Wild and as someone with no zelda experience before this I'm loving it. Probably 50 hours in and just now starting to get the hang of it but its addicting.

I loved going to the top of mountains and hang gliding down on repeat.

The climbing combined with the rain mechanic can be brutal at times, had one time where it rained for three straight days in game and was a pain till I finally lit a fire and slept till it quit so I could climb a ledge to get to a shrine.

The game is so different from all of the Zelda games that came before it that none of them would really have prepared you for this one. Glad you're enjoying it, it's definitely one of my favorite games on the Switch.

Cant get enough of it honestly and I'm not focusing on the story that much. I'm just wandering area to area just looting chests killing baddies and blowing fish out the water and when I finish a zone I do the Divine beast but really havent gone crazy on the story and can say this has been genuine joy and fun to play. took down my second divine beast and got the master sword last night but still feel like I've hardly done much at all.

Yeah, I rarely follow the "main quest" in big open-world games like that at first. Pretty much the first thing I did in BotW after leaving the prologue plateau was to find all of the other towers so that I could add all of the regions to my map, and even then I was mostly just wandering aimlessly, exploring the map that I had unlocked.

Loving the overall story and theme but the gameplay is so relaxing. Excited to progress in the story and finally find some new armor at some point.

Anyone here played Valheim yet? I picked it up this weekend and put about 10 hours on it. Really fun game, especially with a couple friends to play with.

edit: I can't spell

Thinking about buying it since it's only $20 and all the hype but I'd probably end up playing solo.

I'd say it's still worth the $20 even for solo. But it might be a bit challenging as you advance further in the game.

Still hunting for a GPU in what seems to be a fruitless forest. Nvidia trying to release GPU's that are inhibited to running crypto mining programs but the 3060 has already seen a massive price hike before even hitting the market later this week after the original release of pricing was $370 I've seen most places advertising upwards of $500 for them now.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Do you have a price point you are trying to stay under? I have stopped tracking since my 3070 is running everything at ultra settings at 60+ FPS but I am willing to help a hokie out. Feel free to PM me.

Yeah my price point is simply under 700$ at this point, I was hoping to get a 3070 for the preorder price but thats simply not attainable anymore with the price hikes but I almost had a 3080 for $700 the other day but the person with the card wanted an xbox trade instead. Would prefer to keep up or near 600 for the 3070 but getting one of those has been a drag so far I've had a few in the cart but never made it to checkout so far. I'd appreciate any help or tips you used when hunting a GPU down as this has been a drag thus far.

Biggest thing for me was to set the discord alerts on 3 or 4 different servers and don't turn off notifications at night. Didn't care if it woke me up at 3 or 4 AM to snatch a card.

Make sure you stay logged in to all of the sites that typically drop cards so that you aren't delayed by the login process.

Try again for 10 to 15 minutes minimum, the servers get hit hard and then everyone goes back to sleep, but I have seen stock/access to stock trickle back in for a few minutes when people don't close out their transactions.

Thanks man my wife hates my discord notification after months of having it go off 24/7, I'm a member on one large server but I've noticed it seems to be a bit slow and I rarely get anything from there so I probably need to find better servers. A good few twitter accounts help and one of them seems to be the quickest as using their links I tend to cart cards but can't ever get them checked out.
Got accounts on best buy and asus to help but with asus' site being pure ass I might try setting up an account on B&H as well. Friend of mine got one from there but lately the drops have been so minute and rare it's been so slow.

Hopefully you have seen this already, but just in case, Newegg has a product shuffle today for the chance to buy some hard to get items, including an ASUS 3070 for $719.99.

https://www.newegg.com/product-shuffle

I'm in every shuffle ever but still struck out so far but I'll keep trying. Got on the queue for the 3060 12G card on EVGA about 30 minutes after it went up for notify list so maybe that list won't take till august to go through it. The best buy drop was weak sauce today by the looks of it everything sold out really quick.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I checked Microcenter this morning and the Fairfax store has a lot of the new 3060 models in stock. The problem is that the list price is almost as high as the MSRP for the 3070 models with them all hovering around the $500 mark. The crypto craze and the supply chain issues due to covid are not helping gamers out at all.

and as I'm tracking availability in real-time it likes they are having problems with their listings. The one card that was listed below $400 was an EVGA "XC" model which according to EVGA doesn't even exist. What I did see (which is promising) is that when it was listed they were showing 25+ in stock.

At this point I'm almost tempted to try for a 3060 but would rather spend the money on a 3070 but with no drops recently I'm beginning to tire of waiting to get a 3070. Is there anyway to get a 3060 from microcenter without physically being there for those of us with jobs etc?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Nope. Sales for any current gen card are only in person and not available online.

It would be nice if I could have a way of knowing I wasn't wasting gas driving two hours one way to the fairfax store but I guess that's why they keep it all in store to reduce the complications if preordering stuff.

I feel like I just won the damn lottery. After literal months of trying, I finally, finally landed myself a PS5 today through GameStop. Should arrive next week. To the damn moon!

Which is pretty great because I'm actually in the middle of parental leave from work right now with our 2nd daughter having been born on Jan 29th, so I'll have about 4 weeks to test it out between feedings and diaper changes while she sleeps.

Congrats man on the snag saw last night it looked like gamestop had a pretty big drop by the looks of things.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Not gonna lie, it had to be a pretty big drop. I started trying to buy when they went available at like 9:45. It had leaked there would be a bundle drop, but they surprisingly put the base consoles on sale as well. Tried for the disk console, but that sold out by 10. It was about 10:15 when I finally got mine to go through after just abusing the F5 button, and I'll be honest, given how quickly I've seen the bots snap everything up in previous drops, I was ready to give up right when I saw the 'Verify you are not a robot' popup. But yeah, stock was available for easily a half hour.

Ended up getting the Spiderman bundle. By no means was it the cheapest, but everything included was something I was going to get anyway (game, extra controller), so it all netted out in the end. The only premium I would say would be the $20 gift card, but I can use that toward something else in the future.

Also, for anyone else who has had trouble, the one suggestion I saw on Twitter that really worked for me was to do it through Incognito Mode. Some of these sites, and GameStop was one last night, hang your browser up if you refresh too many times, but you can bypass that with Incognito. You'll just have to sign in every time you start anew. Had to restart Incognito Mode 3 times last night before it finally went.

Congrats man! On the kid and snagging a 5.

Thanks!

Yeah, this past year has been a bit crazy for us. But we've found this newborn phase to be a LOT easier with kid #2 than it was with the first. There's something about not thinking every sound at night or every cry during the day is the kid dying has let everything be far less stressful this time around.

Haha, yeah, definitely agree on that one. I've found that I also significantly relaxed my parental standards by the time the second child rolled around, making things a tad bit easier.

Basically went from leaving the house with 2 extra outfits, a variety of well organized snacks, educational toys, gloves, medicine, armor, extra gas can, etc..

To chucking a fistful of cereal in a plastic baggie, a diaper and some fast food napkins, an iPad, and some pajama bottoms and running out the door.

Oh, hey.

You're getting your system next week, so I'd recommend downloading the ps app ahead of time if you don't already have it. I say this because it gives you access to the ps store, and with that you can add this month's free ps plus games to your library while you wait for your console to come in. (The reset for games should be next week) It's a work around for those that haven't gotten their ps5s yet. They have been giving away some good ps5 games (Bugsnax, destruction all stars, etc...) This month's games are all great too, and it would suck to miss out. Once you get your system up and running everything should be in your library, and then you have the option to download wherever you please later. I believe you can only do this workaround from the mobile store via the app though.

Ooh good call on logging into the app. I don't even know which PS5 games are available now. Any other suggestions? I remember hearing back in October or November that many PS4 era games will be available right away (for free?) when you activate a new Ps5? Is that a thing?

Funny thing is, my BIL got a PS5 on the first day drop back in November and passed his PS4 Pro onto me over Christmas. I'm still blown away by the graphic improvement from the PS4 to the PS4 Pro and he said the PS5 is a monumental leap from there. I really can't wait to see how it plays. I started to get into Valhalla, but gave up because the load times were just absurd, and I heard that the PS5 practically eliminates them.

I'll be honest, after seeing what they did with RDR2 on the previous gen, I cannot wait to see the GTA5 remaster, and the inevitable RDR2 remaster on the PS5. I'll gladly pay for an upgraded RDR2, its easily my favorite game and I've gotten far more than $60 in value out of it.

Back to parenting. On top of everything else, my oldest decided she wanted to potty train herself over the weekend, and she's absolutely killing it. Only one accident since we started, and its to the point where we don't even need pull-ups unless she's in bed. So all in all, things are pretty good right now.

RTX-Stockv2<

The good news: I finally got a PS5 last Thursday through Best Buy.

The bad news: I'm returning it tomorrow for a refund. I had heard the console was supposed to be whisper quiet, but mine has coil whine from the power supply that sounds like a pair of electric hair clippers going off. It's loud enough that I can hear it buzzing sitting on the couch while listening through either my speaker setup or open back headphones. I could handle the PS4's whirring fan as that was more of a white noise, but I can't stand the buzz my PS5 makes.

Doing some research online and it seems like Sony cheaped out on the build of the PSU. The XSX has some type of dampening material to prevent vibrations while the PS5 does not.

The few people I know IRL that have PS5s do not have the same buzzing.

Replace the PS5. I've been using and abusing mine for the last few weeks on parental leave and I've never even heard the fans kick on. Sounds like you got one with a defect.

The good news is that the supply seems to be picking up quite a bit. Everyone I knew who was looking for one was able to get one over the last few weeks.

Plus, if you have Game Pass and a good computer you might be able to play most of what's available on XBox right now

Well fellas it was a pain and a drag but I finally got my name called for an EVGA 3060 XC Gaming and man I am loving going back to PC. It plays AC Valhalla really really well for a sub $400 card 50-60 FPS on a High and Ultra settings mix at 1440p.

Niiice. How long were you on a waiting list?

Man, there's been such a drought with gaming lately, haven't even thought to do a spring page yet.

Signed up on Feb 25th for the 3060 which was the release day and I was 35 minutes into the queue so pretty lucky I snagged one actually. Its not as high tech as the 3060ti or 3070 but for my budget build and 1440p monitor it works great. Eventually I'll stepup to a bigger one but right now this fits what I'm looking for. If I can upgrade the cpu I can utilize the resizable bar nvidia tech to get even more out of it.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

i give up... if you signed-up in feb then this is more of a random draw and not a queue... i've been in line for months for many other models, and this just has me throwing my arms up and screaming

So I'm in the same boat as you on all the other models. The queue treats each individual SKU as its own so as they get inventory of a model they feed that models queue only. I happened to be able to get in line for the 3060 XC gaming within half an hour of it going live which is the only reason I got one. Check the EVGA forums and under the 3000 series cards there is a thread dedicated to tracking drops and the queue so you can see where in the queue they currently are at. Basically saying the closer you are to the release date and time window the better your shot. Its a chronological drop and you just have to hope they start getting inventory of the SKU's that youre in line for!

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Here is the EVGA North American queue doc created by someone from the EVGA forum. It has all the 3000 skus and there queue timing and movement.

EVGA 3000 card queue

It updates daily with new drop information if there is one.

so what i'm seeing is that outside of the latest 3060, NONE of the non-water-cooled SKUs have had a drop in 4+ months?

NVIDIA is going to have their 4xxx series out before I can get my hands on a 3xxx card.

No there was good movement on sku 3755 last week(that is the one I'm waiting on). The skus that haven't had movement in more than a month are in light gray with a * next to them. The movement that is shown is just the latest movement. The biggest point of the doc is to give you a good estimate of where your sku queue stands at the point of looking at the doc. Like looking at a checkout line to see how long it is at the retail store.

The movement in quotes and bolded is typically each days worth of movement. I have looked at that spreadsheet for months and there has been some movement here and there but most stuff is still near its original release date.

It was more surprised confusion... I walked by the graphics card section like I have been doing for the last 6 months expecting to see a completely empty case and was confused when there was actually something there. Granted, it was the ONLY thing in the AMD glass case (Nvidia had a lone 1650), so it was a "well... if I dont buy this now I run the risk of not getting my hands on something until the Fall."

So how is it? I know the feeling its kinda crappy to have to get whatever we can get.

Gaming related, has anyone else watched the new Mortal Kombat movie?

As the target demo when the original game came out (shout out to the owner of the cigarette shop at the rundown Tri-State Mall in Claymont, DE that set up a cabinet), I was certainly one of those kids that went to see the original in theatres.

I've gotta say, the new one is exactly what a Mortal Kombat movie (and really any movie based on a flimsy video game premise) should be:

Inconsistent acting (Scorpion, Sub Zero, and Kano are fantastic though)
Downright silly story (its Mortal Kombat after all)
Brutal and entertaining fight scenes
Fantastic special effects and gory, awesome fatalities. The SFX work is really solid throughout.
Plenty of cheesy lines and references to the games ("Get Over Here!" being particularly awesome when it happens)
Some downright compelling set and production design. The opening 8-10 minutes introducing Scorpion and Sub Zero was really fun to watch.

Not a classic of film by any stretch of the imagination. I was watching waiting for "so bad it's good", and it ended up just kinda being a fun movie about people with super powers straight up killing each other in an entertaining and ridiculous way.

I didn't wanna get anyone else's hopes up so I'll vent here, but man it's really damn disappointing seeing 19 new responses in the football recruiting thread just for it to be another back and forth.

Back and forth on TKP is the only "juice" the programs got at the moment

So I took it to franchise mode, created my own team (repurposed the White Sox) and now I'm crushing the league in orange and maroon goodness.

That said, some functionality that existed in the previous isn't there, yet. I can't export a Franchise save from The Show 20. I can't go into logo creator without trying to start a new franchise. I can't do a filtered search on the stadium vault. And the graphics seem a little wonky sometimes (like, the bases, baselines, and jersey numbers look grey instead of white while batting).

I'll try out the stadium creator. Right now I'm working on a player in RTTS and it's just difficult to play with a field player and learning all the new controls for pitching, running, throwing and batting since I haven't played a baseball game since I had a PS2.

if you're just trying to get a feel for the game, then change up your settings to get a good idea for the timing, which can be a bit off. Analog pitching and hitting can add a very steep learning curve, and it really doesn't need to be that way. Go with meter for pitching and directional for hitting, and it should be a lot closer to what you're used to.

I'm hearing really really good things about Returnal. I may check it out

At this point I've just given up on a PS5 and instead got into the VR game with an Oculus Quest 2. Star Wars Squadrons in VR is jawdropping. It really is the coolest game experience that I'm absolutely terrible at. Microsoft Flight Simulator in VR is also super cool, and I'm super terrible at it.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

At this point I've just given up on a PS5

Follow PS5 In Stock Alerts on Twitter. They're on the ball when it comes to stocking alerts for both the PS5 and XBox Series X, as well as hard to obtain accessories. I've also seen them give in stock alerts for some PC graphics card drops as well.

Their heads up is how I snagged my PS5 in February and also picked up the dual charging station this afternoon, both from GameStop.

I have been spending a ton of time on Anno 1800 lately. The Docklands update makes the game much more fun in the mid-game.

I've been eyeing that game as a new one to get in to. I'm big on games like Civ and Tropico so I think it'll be right up my alley. I started a game of Civ 6 Saturday evening and ended up going to bed at 4am.

It's Time to go to Work

I love the series, I found Anno 2070 on sale a few years back and bought both 2205 and 1800 on release.

I recommend all 3 and you should be able to find the older ones on sale, I have found 1800 to be the most challenging of the 3, even on an empty sandbox start.

i just can't get in to those games. I'm the same way with the civilization franchise. I think the last time i ever really latched on to a 4x game was Master of Orion, but I never got in to MOO2 and I dont think i've seriously played a 4x game since then.

Wow, I am surprised after MOO you never got into MOO2 (3 I understand). I am kind with you on the all the other 4x games, although Civ IV wasn't bad.

However, Stellaris by Paradox has rekindled my love of the genre again. To me it's the 2020 version of MOO.

I've had Stellaris sitting downloaded on Game Pass for awhile now. Sounds like maybe I should give it a go

I recommend watching some videos. It's a Paradox game so there are a lot of moving parts, but it's depth and replayability is extremely high.

I'll tell you what happened - Quake. I had been tracking the game development for months (maybe even a whole year) while i was still playing DN3D regularly... MOO2 was released 5 months later (i'm pulling these dates from wikipedia... i dont actually remember the dates) and it never had a chance to get my attention.

So I was browsing Amazon Prime and say a video about Tom Clancy's The Division Agent Origins. The bad guys weren't bullet sponges so it really took me out of the game feel.

GPU mining is is for plebs

It will be unprofitable by the end of the year for a gpu to mine eth. This may actually be a good thing for gamers.

There is always the "next" coin.

and the next GPU... this is going to be cyclical, but at least Nvidia is taking some initiative to split their product offerings to divert the miner needs away from the gaming needs. I hope for our (gaming) sake that their approach works because the lack of supply and insane prices is just going to kill my will to game.

I mean, it probably wont. The miners will just buy that and then graphics cards. Hell with the shortage now the miners are going for gaming laptops. One I bought last october for $900 is going for over $1400.

I'm hoping Chia will redirect some of this craziness, but I fear it will on act as an additional mining route for those that are already sucking up the GPU supply. So instead of one critical part shortage there will now be two.

I'm not so sure. One of two things would need to happen.

1. All the new chip foundries come online fast enough to increase the supply and we don't have everyone stuck at home since that's one of the reasons everything got crazy. Still kinda relies on #2.

2. Crypto get so prohibitively expensive to mine on GPUs, AMD and NVIDIA make their chips awful at those algorithms and don't "accidently" leak how to fix it, or Bitcoin/Ethereum stop with their meteoric rise.

I don't really see #1 doing to much besides slight relief, unless the increase in performance stops its exponential growth making it not worthwhile to toss out the mining rigs every generation.
