WBB vs Duke

The Ladies play at Duke today at 3PM. The game is on Regional Sports Networks. Duke is 7-8 overall and 1-3 in conference. Duke is 6-2, 1-1 at home. They gave #7 Louisville a game at Louisville on Jan 5, only losing by 5. They have also lost rather convincingly to #6 Tex A&M and #5 South Carolina. Their ACC win was against Boston College at home; they lost to Wake Forest by 2 points at home. As you would suspect Duke plays well at home.

Seven different players have started at least one game. Five others have played; but the first seven play most of the minutes. If we can draw some fouls, depth could be a problem for Duke. No one has fouled out this year; but Gorecki and Akinbode-James average 3 fould/game. They have enough height to match up well against the Hokies.

Gorecki and Goodchild are the primary threats from 3. They shoot 43% overall and 32% from 3 in ACC play. The top five players in minutes per game shoot very well overall(52%, 51%, 33%, 40% and 55%); but after that they don't have much scoring potential. They have a 0.7 rebound per game advantage in ACC play. They average 20 TO and 13 assists per game. Stats for those who want to look at them:

On the surface, this looks like a game we should win; but this is the ACC and playing Duke at home is never easy. The Ladies cannot afford a bad shooting game. And they need to play the good defense they are capable of.

Go Hokies!

Losing a game they should be winning. 9 TO in the first half leading to 13 points for Duke, many in uncontested layups. Shooting 52% overall and 50% from three. If they could hold on to the ball, they would be leading comfortably.

Looking better in the 4th, up 8 with 7:16 to go

Once again, no killer instinct. OT

Taking them to OT! Hokies have definitely given Duke their best effort today.

I don't get it. Kitley has been killing them, and instead of throwing it in to her with the game on the line, they call up two three point shots.

Coaching cost us the game. Up 9 in the fourth quarter and we start slowing the offense down and go three straight possessions without getting a shot to let Duke back in the game. Then with 38 seconds left in OT, they call time out just before Mabry makes a three to tie the game. With 4 seconds on the shot clock, they don't have a play to get a shot off and TO with a shot clock violation. How do you not have something set up to get a quick shot in that situation?

I have not had the opportunity to watch much of the games, but I feel like I hear this about 70 percent of our losses. Is Kenny in over his head?

I think he's stuck in a loop where he's afraid of throwing away a game he's up in, late, then freezes on what to do, causing the team to throw away the game.

Kind of like Corny?

Brooks wishes he was as consistent late game as Corny

His teams have pretty consistently been unable to score, or even get a shot, with a short clock. Seems like the ball always ends up in the wrong hands and a poor choice for a scorer ends up taking a wild shot.
