OT - Hulu Dumping RSN

I got an email this morning from Hulu that they were unable to

....reach a deal with Sinclair Broadcast Group to continue offering channels like your Fox Sports RSN, YES Network, and Marquee Network...

As far as I know, this means that the Tech game will not be shown on Hulu this weekend. I know ESPN says the game is on ESPN3, but I'm assuming it will be blacked out since I live in Charlotte, NC.

Any suggestions from my fellow Hokies? I know most games for us are on ESPN affiliates so doubt I'll be dumping Hulu myself, but trying to figure out if I can get a trial to YouTubeTV for the weekend or if there are other subscriptions I can check out.

It's not on YouTubeTV, my plan was to do a Hulu Live trial. Welp.

Just did some of my own research. According to TheStreamable.com, AT&T Now MAX is the only streaming option in the DC area for the game on Saturday (or any other area that is covered by Sinclair). And it appears you can get 7 day trial of AT&T Now MAX plan.

We knew this would happen eventually. People flocked to Hulu Live TV when YoutubeTV lost the RSN's, but this outcome was just a matter of time.

Fuck Sinclair Broadcasting. They are straight up evil, like "from a movie about an evil company" type evil.

I heard a rumor they are trying to get bought out by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation.

Regardless, I hope to check in here on game day to share tips on how to watch as people find them.

I thought this one was on Pitt this time.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

When people start dropping Hulu, they will change course. I get almost all of my baseball through the RSNs so I am glad I never switched to YTTV or Hulu now.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

That isn't how it worked out for Youtube TV.

However, outside of losing access to many Braves and Atl Utd games, I don't regret switching to Youtube TV at all. The interface is incredible, the app is great for watching stuff on the go, and I'm saving a ton of money compared to the sports package on cable.

I dropped YouTube TV for this at the start of baseball season (Yankees on YES). Switched to Hulu because it was offered and now this.... Where do I go that's not cable?

Sling blue package probably has the Fox Sports Net channel for your area which it seems carries the RSN games.
I was mistaken, Sling blue has FS1 and that is not showing the game in Michigan.

I had ATT TV Now and YTTV is so much better they aren't even comparable. It is far and away the best product out there.

Amazingly, Fox Sports Arizona has picked up this game so it's the first game I can watch without having to go to a bar and begging them to turn it on the ACC Network since the UNC debacle. Thanks, Swofford!

Going to try and VPN to a region that won't have it on their RSN and watch on ESPN3.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

is ESPN3 on YTTV?

It's just watchESPN, streaming only through the ESPN website/app. It's the feed that's geoblocked if your RSN is showing the game.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

great! Thanks!

You can just watch the game on the ESPN App, right? I haven't done this for at least a year so I'm not sure if the region you're in matters, please forgive my ignorance in advance.

EDIT: welp, VTFencer beat me to this by a few seconds, so instead I'll just post a meaningless picture instead of our pride in this fine conference:

ESPN will geoblock you if your RSN is showing the game, but if they think you're somewhere else it'll let you stream it.

It's how I watched GT and Pitt in New Zealand last year. I VPN'd back into the states and ESPN was none the wiser.

Wonder if my work VPN is geo located somewhere else other than Raleigh.

If you live in an area where it's broadcasted via RSN, I think (no positive though) that you should be able to watch via antenna for free, right?

Twitter me

I like this option, can anyone confirm?

QTNA for sure. I was under the impression you only got major networks with the Antenna, but I could be very wrong.

I was under the impression you only got major networks with the Antenna, but I could be very wrong.

Depends on your location. I'm in midtown, Atlanta, so I get 60ish channels via Antenna, including any local VT games (to date at least, always on channel 46 or something). But if you're 30 miles outside of a city, then idk how many channels you get.

Twitter me

over the air broadcasts include the major networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, CW) plus a ton of sub-channels and smaller players that may only have a presence in a few regions. There's also some consistently available genre channels that play old (20/30+ year old) syndicated content.. think action movies, westerns, kids programming.

for example to get a little background noise in the house I have been tuning into CHARGE all afternoon for a steady diet of Magnum PI, Knight Rider, and CHiPS in all their 480i glory.

depends, usually the main channels have strong signals but I have picked up our games on an RSN on antenna before

VT '17

Doesn't appear to be on an antenna channel in Hampton Roads for those in the 757.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

I don't think I've ever seen an RSN that has an over-the-air broadcast.

(sometimes in the past these non-ESPN/ABC games make it on The CW or WB or whatnot, but I do not consider those to be RSNs)

Comcast Sportsnet is an RSN. Pretty sure that was sent OTA

Twitter me

I don't think MASN or any of the Fox Sports channels broadcast OTA. That is what most of affiliates are for this game. I think you are thinking of the weekly Raycom games prior to the launch of the ESPN run ACC Network. Those would generally get picked up by OTA broadcasters.

Correct, MASN is strictly on cable and satellite providers, no streaming providers listed on their website.

According to ATT Now's website, they have it. I'll be doing a 7 day trial starting Saturday AM and cancelling Sunday.

Fuck Sinclair on this. They're strong arming every streaming provider into giving them absolutely ridiculous fees and the consumer is getting fucked in the process.

OP mentions the possibility of it being blacked out.

That begs the question, how the hell do you blackout games during a pandemic?

I always thought the point of blackouts was to push game attendance up. I'm sure there is more to it nowadays, but kinda hard to justify that if no one can go to the damned games.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

Pro sports would black out games if the stadium did not sell out to some local markets. The games get blacked out on ESPN3 because of TV rights. If a regional network paid for the rights to broadcast, ESPN can't show it in that market too.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Gotcha. Knew there was more to it but wasn't sure.

It is interesting because I did not get anything from Hulu about losing RSNs yet. I have one about our local ABC affiliate (which is odd since ABC is owned by Disney)

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Same here - checked after seeing this post initially. Now I'm concerned...

Practicing our motto, ut prosim, or, "that I may serve," is imperative in recognizing what it means to be part of the Hokie family.

Local affiliates aren't usually owned by their networks. So in a lot of these carriage disputes, it doesn't matter if it's an ABC or NBC station, it matters if it's owned by someone like Raycom or Sinclair or any of those other entities.

Motherfucker. Guess I'm heading up to Va to spend the weekend with my folks.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

For those in the DC Metro with Comcast ( I knew it would pay off /s) , the game will be aired on MASHD (845).

Don't know if this is accurate, but according to this article Dish and Sling had already dropped the Fox Sports regional networks back in July 2019...

Edit: If you are in DC and have Dish, you should have MASN and thus should be fine to watch the game. But if you're in a region covered by a Fox Sports RSN or YES, then Dish doesn't carry it.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

You are correct, FS1 is still on sling and it does not have the game.

Anyone have the ESPN3 blackout map? We live in Central Texas and am not sure if it will be blacked out for us or not.

I was wondering the same thing for north Texas. I don't really have a back up plan if the ESPN App is blacked out.

Bootlegs off of Reddit are my back up but I really don't want to have to go that way.

Got a link in the other topic with the affiliate list: https://www.thekeyplay.com/content/2020/october/12/vt-wf-1024-330-kickoff

Basically, if any of the channels on that list are on your cable system, or appear on any cable system that you might be able to subscribe to, you won't be able to stream on ESPN3.

I live in MS and have Hulu Live and my guide is still showing the game being broadcast on FoxSports South right after the Florida State/Louisville game.

Probably because they haven't updated it yet. They even show the networks as still available on their sales page. From their FAQ:

hulu

Lives 5 minutes from Wake's Campus, is not allowed to go to the game, has Hulu and still may not be able to watch this game... Not sure how I will react to this if I in fact cannot watch this game, but it will be violent. Either I will cause destruction or look for me at the game, I'll be the one plummeting to my death on top of a drone above the stadium.

Let's shove it to em and rent a goodyear blimp out as a TKP fundraiser and watch from the air above the stadium?

In my exasperation over losing the RSNs on YTTV and now Hulu, I've chatted with a fella at Hulu named Jovell who said they're still negotiating with Sinclair and he's hopeful they'll get it straightened out today or tomorrow even though we've all gotten the email about losing the RSNs. Whether he's saying this to talk me off the proverbial ledge is unknown to me at this time.

I would root for the Russians before I would root for Virginia.

This was the thought with YoutubeTV as well. They claimed they made some kind of agreement, but the actual result was me not watching any Braves games on local RSN's this season.

I want to reiterate I don't blame Hulu or YoutubeTV. There is a clear villain in this situation.

I talked to someone at YT about this once they "worked out a deal" and they told me, a resident of Columbia, SC, that I could not get FS South or FS Carolinas because I wasn't in "the geographical footprint" for either network. So I cancelled on the spot and made the switch to Hulu so I could watch the Braves. Now I don't know what I'm going to do but I certainly don't want to have to go back to cable with my hat in my hand.

I would root for the Russians before I would root for Virginia.

I'm so glad we got this network that is supposed to broadcast all of the ACC games. /s

This has been an absolute nightmare by the way. I had been able to see more Hokie games in the past, then I have in the last two seasons.

Whats even more messed up, is there was a time that if it didn't come on a channel I didn't have, I could at least go to a bar. Last year for the UNC game, we ended up walking all over Chinatown trying to find someone who carried it. Not one bar or restaurant could get it.

Previously LowBrau.

Nflbite.com works well for me but I understand it's not for everyone.

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

I'm not really following the thread to be honest. Does this affect the Wake game specifically? or all games?

Wake specifically, and potentially future games. As of now, Wake is the only game to be broadcasted on the RSN network (MASN, Fox Sports Regionals, YES, etc.), but we don't have the schedule beyond Louisville.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

Thanks. And this affects only folks who have cable cut out? I'm in NOVA and have youtube TV and looks like i'm hosed?

You are hosed my friend.

In DC area, it affects anyone with a TV provider that doesn't carry MASN. For those that use streaming options for TV, the only streaming platform that still carries MASN is AT&T Now. I don't know about the other cable and satellite options.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

Question for those who use ESPN3 through a cable provider... Does the ESPN3 blackout impact you based on your current location (eg; your IP address/geolocation) or is the blackout based on where your cable subscription is located?

Twitter me

ESPN3 blackouts, to the best of my understanding, is based on your current geolocation based on your IP address, regardless of cable subscription location.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

I suspect most of the people in this thread won't like this take but... wasn't this an obvious outcome when streaming services started significantly undercutting cables prices? Blame Sinclar or Swofford or whoever else as the villain, but the content owners are running a business too and were bound to realize they could negotiate higher prices for their content once streaming services proved successful and the contracts came up for renegotiation. Cord cutters on here love to bash cable/satellite TV companies yet it wasn't strictly because of the cable/satellite companies that prices continued to rise year after year. And when networks put out releases that, "you won't be able to watch The Walking Dead because the cable companies want to screw you," people ate it up and blamed the cable companies. Whoops.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

How is it streaming companies fault that Sinclair tries to raise their prices on their contracts? They do the same to traditional cable companies too.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

So who looks out for the consumer if streaming devices aren't allowed to say, that is an unreasonable request. You will no longer have distribution if you price gouge us.

Someone is overvaluing themselves in this dynamic and will get left behind. I'm willing to bet I know who is going to get the shit end of the stick.

Someone is overvaluing themselves in this dynamic and will get left behind.

I think the thing that is most frustrating, is that, for true fans, sports is a relatively inelastic product. I'd probably be willing to pay $5-$10 per game if I had to.

But the fact that I don't have access to it all unless I sign a contract saying I'll pay $60+/month is infuriating. The fact that there are some games I just won't be able to access, just because of my currently location, in 2020, is also infuriating. TBH, I don't care if I have to pay a premium for something. I'm pissed when I can't access it. And the most infuriating part of it is that thee companies have built a moat around themselves, basically allowing them to operate as monopolies.

And at the end of the day, there are so many barriers to entry, that I don't think cable companies will ever be left behind.

Twitter me

For the most part you are correct but eventually someone is going to build a bridge across and there will be nothing the cable companies can do about it.

There are to many people stuck in the same boat we are currently in for there to be no change. This is all my personal opinion.

I own a business that currently acts as a bridge to access conventional products in a non conventional way. It has caused a severe shake up in how the consumer gets access. While it can't be directly applied I truly believe the thought process does.

To a degree, you are correct, but you're also oversimplifying it. There's a lot of things at play:

  • Customers are frustrated with cable bundling, and want the ability to buy content a la cart (even if the content is more expensive)
  • Cable companies could just stream content online to subscribers, but a lot of channels choose not to allow this because they feel it could contribute to 'unbundling'
  • Sinclair has a history of misleading consumers - they potray themselves as 'local stations' when in fact they are one of the largest broadcasting groups in the country. They have very strong political interests, which they try to hide from consumers (CG won't let me go down this rabbit hole). They've been caught in ethical grey areas over the past few decades (worker treatment, monopolistic practices, etc). TL;DR they're easy to hate for reasons other than 'I can't watch my Hokies'
  • Swoffard has had a history of making moves that leave money on the table, so ACC fans don't trust him.

TL;DR yea every business is just looking out for themselves, but the consumer ends up getting fucked.

Twitter me

I didn't respond to OP because I didn't feel I could do so without breaking the CG.

Kudos and a leg to you for finding a way to avoid that.

"I suspect most people won't like me kicking them while they're down. But hang on while I kick them while they're down."

"It's okay. It's not like anyone died" - Coach Fuente

The sensitivity over a football game is a little out of control. I hate that some Hokies feel burned and will miss the game but this was bound to happen with streaming services. In previous threads some posters openly boasted about illegally obtaining content and there was no brushback on that from mods but it's interesting that I'm being targeted for essentially pointing out that there's a reason streaming services were cheaper and the market is going to adjust for those costs.

Thank you good sir!

Is coronavirus over yet?

Any one have xfinity? I have a question. I have cable at my lake house, can I use my credentials to stream xfinity remotely?

I use my parent's xFinity account to stream games that land on real Fox/FS1 or an RSN. But I use the app for channels and not xFinity streaming app. Only thing that is confusing is that their is two fox sports apps out there. Fox Sports which is for Fox, FS1, FS2 etc. Then their is Fox Sports Go which has all the Fox RSN channels.

So I can't stream it over xfinity. I have to be on the xfinity wifi. Should have gone to the lake house this weekend it seems.

There's too many community guidelines for me to tiptoe on to discuss the reality of the situation (corrupt politics, verizon, sinclair). But to try to explain, streaming services aren't buying into the value Sinclair thinks they can bring, because streaming wants to stay a cost effective option to cable. That's not what Sinclair wants, cause they are buddy buddy with Verizon through politics.

For some transparency, Sinclair is asking for 3-4x the money Fox offered for these RSNs.

TKPhi Damn Proud

For some transparency, Sinclair is asking for 3-4x the money Fox offered for these RSNs.

That's absurd.

And Sinclair is playing a dangerous game. At a certain point, if you're not allowing your stations to be broadcast on these streaming sites (and its not just the streaming providers that have been bullied like this), then it becomes breach of contract for the variety of collegiate and professional leagues and franchises that rely on them to air their events to the customers of the leagues and teams themselves.

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

It looks like that I'll be able to watch the game but I'm not holding my breath as I'm losing confidence with everyone in charge.

I may have to reserve some abdominal space and pee on someone in charge in this crap doesn't get sorted out.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

It would be a real shame if someone linked a stream from reddit that they could watch from. A real shame....

I have Hulu live TV and the game is showing up on one of the ESPN College Extra channels for me. I'm not sure if this will hold and actually be broadcast but it's looking ok for me right now 27 hours out from kickoff.

And my game was removed entirely from the upcoming schedule. So it's looking not ok for me 27 hours out from kickoff

(add if applicable) /s

I've got Hulu live TV as well. Where are you though? if you're not in the region that might be why. I'm in CLT

"Now Miami wants to talk about it." *Cue Enter Sandman*

Yea, I'm in Hawaii so that might be why. No East Coast problems here.

So against my better judgment, signed up for ATT Now Free Trial and can't set tomorrow's game to record due to "Content Not Recordable."

Says show isn't included in my subscription despite the fact that I'm watching FS Florida and can record what's on now.

Don't know if this is a weird glitch, or some game ATT is playing because they know people are joining just for RSN access.

Either way, gonna cancel this the second the clock hits 00:00 tomorrow afternoon. Given my previous history with ATT, wasn't expecting much, and they certainly underwhelmed thoroughly.

Would kill to have PS Vue back. Terrible name, crap marketing but beat the pants off of every other streaming service I've experienced.

I thought ATT now was confirmed to not have it but if it does that's gonna be my backup

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

The $80 package has the RSNs...FoxFlorida where I am.

I (and others) should be able to watch but it won't let me add to the Recording queue.

I even did a Chat with ATT technical support who assured me it would be fixed within 2 hours...4 hours later, still not.

Nothing like not allowing a new customer to Record content on your remarkably overpriced streaming platform to create a solid impression.

I just signed up for AttTV so I can watch the game tomorrow. I think all ACC ADs, particularly the ones in the Commonwealth, should be livid about these types of things.

Here's to hoping I can actually watch the game!

Is coronavirus over yet?

Hulu Live left me in the lurch, so I checked my ESPN(3) app and found the game graphic for tomorrow with the little tag, "Blackout". Not happy, Bob. Looks like I'm going to have to impose on a friend.

Was the blackout tag obvious? I see the thumbnail for the game on mine but there's no text over it other than the kickoff time.

Yes it's usually on the selection image so it's pretty obvious

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

This is one of the reason we keep cable that and TIVO (although Xfinity has now started attacking TiVo access by claiming they can't send signals to cable cards and now I can't get BTN, red zone or disney junior).

Best way to check: Click here to look at the ACC games on WatchESPN. Look for the VT game, and hope it doesn't have the blackout icon, like this:
