OT-February 2021 Fishing Thread

The pike will be hanging in bars looking to pick up some strange. Crappie will trying to find brush piles and as the days get longer the big girl bass will start to roam. What's happening in saltwater!?

Just received this. Bass buggy for the ponds and small lakes. My goal is to clear Little Creek of their saugeye problem! Actually just need to catch one to clear a 20 year old bet!

Cool!

Is it self-bailing?

It does have a plug that sits above the water line. If that's is what you are referring to.

it is, thanks!

Thanks for starting the new thread Musky. Shad season should be here in about 5 weeks.

I have never fished for shad in my life. If you will show me the ropes I'll buy.

I don't know if I know what needs to be done down here, but I am going to head to Aylett here in about 3 or 4 weeks.

Medium to Medium light tackle, a smallish spoon and a weight a few feet above the spoon to get extra casting distance and shad will hit it almost every cast you make when they are running. It is a lot of fun for sure. Some people rig up a two shad dart rig but I have had success with what I said above.

All my luck has been a 1/2 oz dart on a four inch tag end of a dropper loop, then about 13 inches down to a small silver or gold spoon. That was my jam on the Potomac at Fletchers. I have been told that won't be heavy enough to fish in the James, and too heavy for the Mattaponi.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I think the 1/2 oz dart is plenty heavy based on my experience. However I haven't fished it from the bank

Yeah that should work no problem I believe.

I had one of those bass buggy boats for years. Threw a trolling motor on it and had an absolute blast. Did pretty well floating the estero river for snook in the winter too! Enjoy it!

Went down to NC for some schooled up reds out of the surf. The school never pushed in close enough but we managed to get about 10 between the 3 of us. I got of couple that were top of the slot or overslot. I never made it down to Hatteras this fall so it was nice to get out and cast some lures in the surf.

nice fish!

what are you throwing?

Thanks Dave! I was throwing a 1.5 oz clarkspoon metal jig that's peanut bunker shaped. Trying to get some good distance. Needed more of a 9-10' metal rod to get more distance than my 7'6". Bumping it off the bottom.

Trying to build a small workshop to store my kayaks and fishing gear but man plywood has gotten pricey. May end up going metal to avoid draining the wallet.

Worst part is I have a big stack of metal roof to use that I got for free but need to side it cheaper than $30 a sheet plywood. Trying to do it cheap while making it not an eye sore for the wife is a fine line.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

You will still spend a ton to make it look good. Metal trim pieces for the roof gable and ridge, and the shed corners add up the cost quick. I am finishing up a combo garden shed/doghouse right now that I had to match to my metal pole barn.

Second that on the metal stuff got a few quotes and thatll be a no from me. I already salvaged the metal roof so I'm not having to buy any roofing stuff aside from screws and some metal roof sealant/paint and a few trim pieces but doing the whole siding got expensive quick. The matching part is brutal but luckily we still have alot of exterior paint leftover from when they painted the house which is a nice chunk off as well.

I have $900 in the metal order and another $600-800 in the lumber and hardware.

Looks great!

Looks great well done man! Lumber has gone nuts to where metal is a legit option right now. So glad I built my house before it went crazy I have a friend who was planning on building this year but lumber cost for framing made it a no go till things balance out.

I've gone as far as to research shipping containers but no amount of lipstick would make that pig look good in the yard. I think I have a solution in using the thinner wall panels and simply framing in the simplest manner possible. Going to build a lean to off the back or side for a kayak and canoe rack to store the boats and finally get them out of the weather all the time.

Nator, for what it's worth; I had my Florida room redone and have almost a full box of white vinyl 8" siding that you can have.

For the time being I appreciate the offer but I'm holding off a little on the project after researching the lumber prices I'm going to hold off and wait till lumber comes back down to earth right now its just gotten out of hand cost wise. Eventually the price of pine will come back from is all time high and lumber wont be triple the cost of what it was this time last year. Sawmills are finally catching up in production to meet the high demand which was the issue all year long when the housing industry didnt tank as the "experts" predicted and so the mills have been playing catchup all year long and havent caught up yet.

Out of boredom I drove down to Little Creek today to check it out. Stopped at Adam's (Providence Forge) and picked up some chicken gizzards and hot sauce. The fried fish looked awesome and I should've gotten a piece or two. And like everyone else they had no ammo.

The lake is still down by 50' due to dam problems. The banks are overrun with tall grasses. If they refill it can you imagine the nutrients that will be released! You can still launch a small boat from the ramp and that is iffy.

I stopped by Hooker Tackle and some younger guy was running the place. New to me and the place was barren. I asked about the walleye fishing and all he knew was that a couple of customers did fish for them. Why didn't this guy know everything about Little Creek. Maybe I'll buy it.

Shake down cruise on the the 25th down there. Let's see what happens

Weather finally cooperated today with the fog lifting around 10:30. Fishing was slow and this was the only one of 4 trout and 2 reds that made the box. But it was a gorgeous day and great to get out.

Nice work Dave! I've been watching some Kwigglers (texas lure company) videos on youtube with them wading the texas flats and shows them catching reds and trout. Pretty good laid back informational videos that go along with what you said of catching reds and trout in the same spot.

Synchronicity!!!

I got a letter out of the blue this week from my B-I-L in Minneapolis. It contained a few photos of a trip he and I took our dads on to Port Mansfield in the early 90's (93-94?). It was a lifetime experience, especially for his dad who was from Artesia, NM and had almost never fished saltwater. These fish were caught wade fishing in about 2-3 hours as the sun went down. And all on either Kelly Wigglers or Bill Norton strawberry and white shrimp tail jigs.

Sorry about the quality...for reference those are 2x6's on the dock.

That's awesome! Those are some real quality fish right. Top of the slot reds and mid 20s trout looks like. Gotta love those memories.

Can't spell DBU without Bud

that's a pretty good guess

We were standing casting distance apart and I was trying to keep track of what we had so we wouldn't go over the limit. BIL's dad didn't know a red from a trout, everybody was on fish and it was too dark and too far for me to see. He'd just yell "I gotta biggun!". And I'm thinking, "please be a trout".

Man, what a haul! Looks like a ton of fun!

keep an eye on this cold front. depending on wind and duration, it sets them up for a potential fish kill

I saw Texas put out something to protect them during this cold front. People seemed to think trout down there are more susceptible to stun at like 45 degrees water temps where they are caught readily in VA/NC.

Can't spell DBU without Bud

oh yeah; 1989 was real bad down there.

their bays are so shallow...wind blows the water out so it's easy to get a very rapid water temperature drop in a matter of a day or 2. so it's not just whether the fish can survive in a particular temperature, the stun phenomena is real (here in FL, too). it's total hell on sea turtles.

I saw some ugly pics on facebook of trout littering the banks in Texas.

Can't spell DBU without Bud

I don't understand why people don't go gather them up to eat like they froze to death they should be more than okay to eat. I loaded up on crappie when we had 240 volts short into a friend's lake. I have them all frozen as fillets and vacuum packed they're awesome to have to pull out for dinner.

hmmm...maybe an amber eye makes this "opening night" color (Slayer's "purple haze") a baby trout?

That's the money color from last year

yeah; I picked some up based on your reports but haven't given them a good workout.

Iridescent pink is not a color I've really noticed much before in the wild (probably because I haven't looked) but it really showed up in a couple of trout pics like the one I posted earlier.

Maybe try a couple strands on the brow of a clouser?

Oh yea, I've been tying that color combo in Clousers since last year. Sometimes I stick a Chartreuse tail on it. It was by far and away the best color combo last season.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Speckled truth came out with a color called the truth (purple back/silver side) that is similar. It's been pretty effective for me and other trout guys. Some people have theorized since trout have that purple back if that light hits them right and trout are cannibals, which is why the color works so well.

Can't spell DBU without Bud

cool! that mirrodine is also a good looking bait. also keep in mind that blue is the most visible color in the least light, so the blue on the sides should be a help. needs an amber eye, lol

I don't have a f'ing clue what you guys are talking about but I love the chatter!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 馃帲

lol!

I noticed Mirrolure is selling in-line retrofit kits for some of their hard baits...2/0 for 27MR and 1/0 for 17MR...they look like VMC's

I saw someone talking about it recently. Just checked it out definitely looks like VMC in lines. There's only been a few I've seen that use inlines for trout. If I was targeting more reds, I'd consider using inlines. It's so much fun to steady retrieve a mirrolure and it get smacked by a trout, I'm sure a red would hit even harder. I did have a bad accident this weekend of stepping on an open tackle box with trebles that were taken off other lures and putting three treble hooks into my foot. Not fun times. My dad was able to pull them out fortunately so no ER visit.

geez, that's no fun at all. glad you are okay!

Thanks Dave! Healed up nicely which I'm thankful for

if you want to stick your toe in the water but aren't ready to go all in...

I've yet to fish these but I've rigged a size 4 (ewg) Gamakatsu treble (belly) with a 1/0 VMC (tail) on a 17MR; and rigged a size 2 (ewg) Mustad treble (belly) w/ a 2/0 VMC (tail) on a 27MR. The lures are still balanced nose to tail and maintain the characteristic wobble on descent.

Florida hokies, I am down in Ponte Vedra for work. I brought a two piece spinning rod down with me and want to hit some ponds around my hotel. Obviously I don't plan on trespassing, fishing where it is prohibited, etc. I got my temporary freshwater license and just want to snatch a few bass and put them right back. Does anyone familiar with the area have any recommendations on spots, what to do, or even what not to do? I plan on hoping in my rental car and hitting apartment complex or smaller neighborhood ponds (the non gated kind).

I don't know I'd stay shallow. Bass will be starting to bed about now. I'd throw a plastic and work it slow. Catch the male and the female will follow.............SLOW!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 馃帲

If they're on the beds, try a jig head with a pink 6 inch worm. Used to drive bass in my area absolutely ape shit. Just sit there and jiggle it until they get pissed off enough to slam it

Watermelon trick worm on a shakey head works pretty well when they are on beds at some of the spots I fish around RVA (clear water). I have heard of the pink worm and the color shock theory but I only brought a handful of worms with me, all some form of june bug. I mean if you don't fish june bug or red bug in Florida did you actually fish?

Nice pond prowler Musky, I had one for a while and it was a great boat.

If you get weathered out and want to check out a decent tackle shop, Strike Zone is on Beach at 295. I think they close at 7.

June bug is also a great color. I just didn't fish it as much as others. I pretty much had a 3 color lineup for bed fishing- pink, black, green/red flake. If I didn't get hit on those 3, then I'd switch to anything else. Almost like scripting the first 10 plays of a football game (or every play if your Brad Cornelson....)

I did grad school for a couple years at LSU in their wildlife program. My roommate was in fisheries. Between us, we had permits to...uh... "collect" pretty much everything; and there was also a 17 acre lake behind the gates on the college research farm. We didn't miss out on a whole lot.

If you get stuck an extra day, our 80's band is playing Fri night. The place is a dive in the sticks; but we have a good band.

If you come back in the future and schedules permit, I can meet you at the Palm Valley ramp and get you out in the boat for a couple hours.

Good luck this week

Just got back today from a trip to Spanish Wells, Bahamas. Did some reef fishing while I was there and caught some smaller yellowtails & grouper. Went out with a bonefish guide on Friday and was skunked for the first half of the day. Managed to finish strong though with a pair by blind casting into mud a school was churning up as they fed across the bottom, a small one out of a school, and a decent fish that was tailing on the flats. Definitely a great experience and can't wait to do it again.

COVID requirements were pretty stringent, but made me feel better about going out of town/country on vacation. In the past 2 weeks I've gotten three tests to satisfy the rules. Flying ourselves also helped things out as we weren't concerned about going through airports.

You flew yourself into North Aleuthera Airport, right?
That is sweet!
In 1986 and 1987, my roommate was an instructor at FIT in Melbourne. We rented, from FIT, a Cessna 180RG a couple times and flew to what is now Leonard Thompson Airport, on Great Abaco near Marsh Harbour. We would stay 3-4 days each trip. We did this to go surfing at Elbow Cay. We rented a house near the Abaco Inn and surfed Garbanzo Beach, Indicas, and Rush Reef. The reefs are super sharp there! Fishing is incredible there as well (Offshore access via Tilloo Cut).
Caught Rush Reef overhead once, place is way out from the shore right in front of the Abaco Inn and can be a bit sketchy at times (currents, sharks).

Yep! Right in MYEH. Great airport and the FBO was easy to work with. I'd like to go back to SW but heard the bonefishing @ Abaco is some of the best.

Man, SW Florida fishing has been absolute fire lately. At least from what I've seen in reports... 3 pending lawsuits and other stuff at work plus picking up a side gig (totally unexpected) have me going on 2 months without wetting a line AT ALL. A guy I know caught a keeper cobia less than 2 miles off shore yesterday and said they landed over 200 fish in a 6 hour trip between 5 of them.

Took a shake down cruise yesterday on Little Creek in Toana and had the lake to ourselves.. just as and during the cold front blew threw. Nothing was biting as all fish were completely suspended and the game fish were not relating to the bait. Using my new Garmin (I was stoked) I really gave the reservoir a look see. Blue Back Herring abound in many parts of the lake. Even with the draw down of 10 feet there are still holes 50-60 feet and if there was structure that deep that is where the stripped bass (I presume) were hanging. Stocking rates of saugeye have been on an annual basis so I will get one! This is my beef; a keeper walleye is 18" and that is big to me. Eaters are 14-16. Can't wait to get back.

Went out this weekend early. Not much happening on the tail end of a big incoming tide. Did get a little backed up at the ramp after a guy dumped his boat in the middle of the ramp.

Looking hard a starting a gheenoe project. Trying to find the right one to strip and set up how I want it. Just getting to be too much of a PITA to launch my bay boat solo for a 2-3 fishing trip.

(add if applicable) /s

Seems like a good idea to get a gheenoe, especially if you don't have to run wide open areas.

Can't spell DBU without Bud

My new house puts me closest to a ramp on a river that runs straight to marsh flats that I can't even get into with my bay boat. Think it'd be beneficial but by the time I fix this boat up and slap a motor on I'd probably have moved already so that's my only hang up.

(add if applicable) /s

I gotcha, you could mothership a kayak or standup paddleboard over to marsh flats or just kayak over there if it's close.
