US Women's soccer 44 game unbeaten streak comes to an end on a 3-0 loss to Sweden to open the Olympics

I regret that I only have one leg to give this comment. So here's two more.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

I woke at 4:00 for this game. Kinda wish I'd stayed in bed. Sweden has long been a thorn in our side. Hopefully they can regroup. Sweden played really aggressively and the US had a tough time putting together a sustained attack. Sweden played one hell of a game both athletically and tactically and sadly they deserved to win this one.

Considered getting up for it since I go to work at 5:30 but couldnt bring myself to get up so I said F it and went back to sleep. After seeing the score when I woke up I'm glad I didnt watch.

Curious for how you thought the subs did when they came on, and if there were any real positives to bring out from the game.

...couldnt bring myself to get up so I said F it and went back to sleep.

So we have you to blame for this loss. ;^)

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

I'm usually the kiss of death so I went with that kind of attitude. Not like it was a tight game though so I'm not too bothered.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I would have waited longer to sub. We couldn't get anything going in the first half, but with the experience on this team, I would give them another shot to get something started. We were only down 1-0 and these players are the best in the world at what they do. Since he did make the change, I did like the poise and experience that Lloyd brings when she is in the game and we did see a bit of a positive spark on offense when Rapinoe entered, but overall everyone was really flat. We had a hard time getting players in the box. There were several balls that were served up perfectly, but we didn't have anyone to crash the net.

This is a major upset, but Sweden tends to do that to us in recent years. It goes back to when our old coach Pia Sundhage left to coach in her native Sweden. Since then Sweden always plays us really well and has beaten us 4 out of the last 6 games (or something similar). Ever since the groups were announced I've been really nervous about this game.

Edit: I wanted to add that even though I called this a major upset, Sweden is ranked 5th in the world so we didn't lose to a bad team. In women's soccer the difference between 1 and 5 can be large especially when the US is #1.

Thanks for the summary, I'll rewatch it later today but sounds like some jet lag and a bit of taking things for granted maybe. The team has alot of talent and a stale game here and there with no fans isnt a surprise. Timing on subs is damned if you do damned if you dont if they dont work they dont work I guess. Being that Germany and France both arent at the olympics makes Sweden the third best team ranking wise I think so not a huge upset but definitely a foot up the backside to get them motivated hopefully.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Exactly. They are the most experienced and best team in the tournament and should be able to rebound. I think the lack of fans probably had an impact. The US players have been playing in the NWSL all summer with some amount of fans (varies by state laws), so they were used to an exciting atmosphere again. I have no idea what the fan status has been in Sweden leading up to the games.

I think sweden has had fans but not sure how their womens league works. I would imagine its a bit eerie with the way its going to be this summer in Tokyo and will effect some more than others. Imagine Iceland i nthe world cup with no fans.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

You hate to see it

Didnt know you were swedish?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I'm not Swedish. I typically root hard for the red white and blue, but this team is impossible to root for.

The reigning World Cup Champs are hard to root for?

I know where this convo is going, and I'm just enjoying the show

I'm excited to see if there is an answer within the CGs.

I'm not going down that path. Let's just say I won't be terribly disappointed if they win a bronze.

Probably good that you're not going down that path. And since you aren't going down that path your comment was definitely trying to bait the board. This thread should be used to celebrate and discuss the thousands of athletes around the world who have scarified for their sport. If you don't like the team for personal reasons that is fine, but you don't need to bash the team or hint at your opinions. Use Twitter for that.

I'm hopeful that the Games play out, but if Japan's Olympic CEO is saying this publically, then it's still a possibility that the Games get cancelled.

"We cannot predict what the epidemic will look like in the future. So as for what to do should there be any surge of positive cases, we'll discuss accordingly if that happens," Muto said during a press conference held in Tokyo on Tuesday.
"During the last five-party talk, it was clearly stated we'll continue to monitor the coronavirus situation, and a five-party talk will be held if necessary."
The five parties are the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, the Japan government, the Tokyo Metropolitan government and the International Paralympic Committee.
"At this stage, the coronavirus situation might get worse or better, so we will think about what to do when the situation actually arises," added Muto.

Just three days before the sporting spectacle is set to begin, Tokyo public health expert Dr. Kenji Shibuya said the Olympic bubble system "is kind of broken."
"Visitors, athletes, journalists, delegates, of course they are supposed to be within the bubble, but it's not working well," Shibuya said in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday.
"It's obvious that the bubble system is kind of broken, so there seems to be some sort of interaction between guests and visitors and also local people."

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Honestly, it seems pretty stupid to hold the games this year anyways, considering not only the risk of infection, and further spread of covid, but the conditions that they are forced to be under to mitigate the risks seems pretty miserable.

It almost worked for John Brightling and the Horizon Corporation with Shiva.

USA Softball opened up with a 2-0 win over Italy. This is the first time softball and baseball are back in the Olympics since 2008. There were several players that came out of retirement to compete in the Olympics again. Most notably is pitcher, Cat Osterman who was an ace at Texas and and won the gold medal in 2004 and the silver in 2008. She and a few other players have said that one of the main motivating factors for coming out of retirement was to bring the gold back to the US.

Don't know about you, but I'm still pissed that Tincher missed out on going because they canned it. She still smoked Team USA though. So, she's got that going for her. Which is nice.

If you play it, they will win.

My sisters played against angela in little league and I remember my dad (the coach) telling all the players to just swing early and hope you hit it bc its coming too fast to react and she isnt going to walk you

Don't really get too into the Olympics anymore. Too much corruption and iffy stuff goes on with selecting the venue, countries - especially like Brazil that are emerging nations - going into debt for it, and many, if not most, of the events I do not consider to be actual sports*. Will pay attention to volleyball and maybe some beach volleyball, but that is about it.

*First let me say, that if other people consider the following things a sport, that is fine. I have no problem with other's views. But I do get a kick out of the people who flip out because I personally won't consider something to be a sport that they do.

For me to consider something a sport, it has to:
(1) Be an athletic competition between individuals or teams such that a typical person does not have the athletic ability to compete at a world class level (darts, bowling and shooting events don't count, but something like biathlon would)
(2) Have an objective scoring system that everyone agrees on - anything where the primary determinant is some judge grading people on a subjective measure is not a sport to me (diving, ski jumping, gymnastics and figure skating don't count). And I would argue that gymnasts could be the best or second best athletes in the world. Total respect for their skill and athleticism. But I consider it an "athletic competition" and not a "sport".
(3) The winner cannot be pre-determined (pro wresting does not count; actually one could argue that figure skating does not satisfy points 2 or 3 given the judge cheatings over the years)

I have issues with a few of your statements, but this one is hard for me to understand. I do not think many gun owners have the ability to shoot as accurately as Olympic athletes do and they certainly can't do it under time and pressure constraints. If you train for thousands of hours a year for an "athletic competition" that few other people in the world can do, then why is it not considered a sport?

As well as speed climbing, skateboarding, and surfing!!! The Horrors!!!!!

Vroom Vroom

Unfortunately, they decided to only give sport climbing one set of medals to hand out, so we don't get to see just speed climbing, it's the stupid combined format. So even though the world record has been broken twice this year, we won't get to see any of the three men who have held the world record this year compete.

Man!! After seeing the doc on speed climbing at last years Banff Film Festival and how it was going to be in the Olympics I've been looking forward to it...

Vroom Vroom

So there will be speed climbing involved, but the top speed specialists won't be there. Because the combined format includes all three of lead, speed, and bouldering, and lead and bouldering are much more similar to each other than they are to speed, the competition will be dominated by L/B specialists, such as Janja Garnbret, Tomoa Narasaki, and Adam Ondra. They've had to do some very extensive speed training that they wouldn't usually do - and a few of them have actually gotten pretty good at it. One of the Japanese women actually medalled in a speed competition vs speed specialists during this World Cup season. But I would not expect times anywhere near the world records - not to say they aren't ridiculously fast anyways.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

So, because how a venue was selected a dozen years ago (allegedly) you won't watch people compete in competitions because they aren't sports (allegedly). Ok. Glad we cleared that up.

I'll just drop that below...

The mission of the IOC is to not only ensure the celebration of the Olympic Games, but to also encourage the regular practice of sport by all people in society, regardless of sex, age, social background or economic status. This is done in many ways, year round and on all five continents.

To you from failing hands we throw

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

Dude, seriously? As I said, it is fine for people to disagree with me, but for you to put "allegedly" into a discussion about Olympic corruption and imply that it was something that only "allegedly" happened once a dozen years ago is like saying that there were alleged incidents of genocide in Rwanda many years ago. Okay, maybe that is too much hyperbole (don't want to go full DC).

But seriously, just Google Olympic corruption and get ~33 million hits in ~0.5 seconds. Everything from things ages ago to the figure skating judging scandal in 2002 to Tokyo bribing scandal this year to the old NPR interview with the guy with the Birmingham Olympic bid who said he knew the shoe sizes of all the children of all the people reviewing their bid to ...

So no, I cannot get into an event run by people that are, if anything, more corrupt than the NCAA.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

The IOC and the NCAA are corrupt organizations that exploit athletes for financial gain. I think we can all agree on that. However, I and many others overlook that because we celebrate the athletes and their accomplishments rather than write them off because the folks that organize the event are corrupt AF.

Exactly. Pooping all over the athletes and competitors because something that happened when they were in elementary school deserves the "dude, seriously". Don't buy tickets. Don't buy Olympics xxxx gear from the nbc shop. But to turn your nose up and not watch, ok. I for one tune in for those competing and their journey to the Olympics.

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

When did I "poop on the athletes"? Said gymnasts are probably the best of second best athletes in the world (other one being track and field). I was also unaware that I was in elementary school when the bribing for the current Tokyo Games occurred.

Let's just drop it. We clearly won't get anywhere.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

I believe the OP was referring to many of the athletes being in elementary school when Tokyo was selected as the host country.

Corruption or not, this was supposed to be Japan announcing that it was back and better than ever after the tsunami. Sadly Covid decided to give them the big fuck you and screw it all up.

I just watched some beach handball highlights and had to google why everyone was doing jumping 360/barrel roll shots and apparently you get 2 points for those vs 1 for a regular shot on goal. It looks like it would be a ton of fun to play.

This is one of those sports that I always wonder, how does one get into it? Are there youth handball leagues?

The majority of events will kick off after the opening ceremonies on Friday. Softball, soccer and a few other sports start earlier because their tournament style of play takes longer to complete.

The USA Men actually won the 2019 FIBA 3x3 World Cup, which SHOULD have directly qualified them for the Olympics. But due to FIBA's convoluted 3x3 rankings, the US Men and Women both had to attend the FIBA 3x3 qualifying tournament earlier this year and finish in the top 3 to qualify for Tokyo.

The US Women easily finished in the top 3 and the US Men actually did pretty well by winning their pool. But they suffered a quarterfinal loss to the Netherlands, which knocked them out of the Olympics. So long story short, the US Men had one bad game that cost them a shot at Tokyo.

The hell.

I might be in the minority, but to me that was an epic choke by Biles. Yes, mental health is important, but I don't know how you make it through the 1st event, have a bad vault, then decide you're out.

If you're the best in the world and supposed to be the greatest ever, I don't see how you can just straight up quit on your team.

Yup!

This is a tough one to know what she was dealing with but from the outside it feels a bit off but it's becoming something we are seeing more in sports now so maybe this will be more common? Alot of the folks with the experience or atleast who get the stuff going on are saying this is because she was being told to hold back which feels odd and maybe she didn't feel confident enough to do her routines maybe? Either way if she does the individual stuff or not will tell us alot about how this will be seen. Imagine the NFL telling Brady to hold back or lebron to ease up it doesn't make much sense to me but every sport is different I guess.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I dunno, maybe if she felt like she didn't have the mental edge to flip her body upside down multiple times and not land on her neck it's ok that she decided not to do it.

It didn't look like her team resented her, so maybe we can lay off?

Get Angry, Bud!

She didn't quite on the team. If she had sprained her ankle and could not continue would you say she quite? Mental health is no different than any other health or injury. Just how we treat people who come forward is the difference.

So if any other elite athlete, deemed the best ever at what they do, started a Championship Game, had one bad play, and decided to bench themselves the rest of the game; that's not quitting on the team?

The fact you think she pulled herself out after one poor vault shows you clearly don't understand or accept what mental health is.

I know what mental health is. It doesn't just happen like an ACL tear in the middle of the game.

If they determined that in their current state that their team would perform better if one of their teammates played instead of them then no, it's not quitting on the team.

VT BSEE '98, VT MSME '01

That's a selfish action in my opinion. Just because she thinks and says "oh you'll perform better with out me" doesn't mean they will. The leader of the team bails randomly which then prompts 2 of those girls to compete in events they had no expectation being in with no time to practice or mentally prepare themselves.

That's just not a good look in my opinion.

So I'm not going to disagree with where your heads at as I can see why and get it kind of, one thought I had earlier was that whether its her doing or the media/fans doing she has had alot of hype placed on her as the labeled goat of gymnastics. Thats a hell of alot of pressure for anyone to deal with from the start and only being 24 with all that pressure and not the experience of most athletes of that level of their game I can see where an issue may come up. Hell Brady is 42? and Lebron getting up there as well they have immense amounts of experience and support to help go on and I can see where lack of experience and age can make it hard for her.
That all said it would be weird to me if she did individuals after pulling from the team event but maybe thats just me.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I mentioned somewhere else that I don't think she should do individual. But, it's a win/win for her regardless of what she does. If she competes, regardless of outcome, she'll be the biggest story of the Olympics for pushing through. If she backs out, she'll be a hero for mental health awareness.

And yes, I agree the media/public can be to blame for exploding her expectation, but she has made millions of dollars through endorsements for being the best, so at what age is it comfortable to have pressure/hype put on you? 24 isn't all that young in that industry. If she was 16 then I'd completely agree, but she's been a professional for probably 8 years or so, that's why I'm kind of calling it a choke. She should have enough experience for her to be able to absorb/handle some of the expectation, pressure, and hype.

24 isn't all that young in that industry. If she was 16 then I'd completely agree, but she's been a professional for probably 8 years or so, that's why I'm kind of calling it a choke. She should have enough experience for her to be able to absorb/handle some of the expectation, pressure, and hype.

I think this is general line of reasoning is incredibly shortsighted at best and obtusely ignorant at worst

The fact that Simone Biles, the great gymnast ever, who is in her third olympic games, who has been a professional for probably 8 years or so, who was trying to do routines and moves that are literally named after her because she is the only woman in the world who has ever been able to do them and has literally had the degree of difficulty undervalued because it would be unfair to her competitors is facing this tells me that she CAN "absorb/handle some of the expectaction, pressure, and hype", but that even the humans who seem superhuman actually aren't, and they have their limits and it literally broke her.

"just rise to the occasion" kind of mindset is so strange when she literally has continued to rise over and over again and high and higher each time

She hasn't been right for a while. She was clearly off at the qualifiers last month. This has been building.

the thing is, it wasn't just 'one bad play'. she has been having issues for a while. i told my wife earlier this week, that something just seemed off with her, after she stepped off the landing mat on a vault, and had other uncharacteristic mistakes on floor and beam, if my memory is right.

she just caught a case of the yips at the worst possible moment in her career...and unlike a chuck knoblauch or roy halladay, a case of the yips for her means a very serious injury.

Simone Biles getting the yips in the middle of doing 2 1/2 twists in mid air at high speed can result in some significant injuries.

Yes sports are dangerous. Keri Strug didn't seem to care. No dog in this fight... but Keri's last vault could have been Simones story.

Kerri Strug's last vault didn't end up mattering for the American team (in retrospect, to be fair), and she also never did gymnastics again after that vault. At age 18.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

One of the former gymnasts from USA sort of breaks down why this is terrifying for Simone and impressive that she even landed that vault. Gymnasts don't typically land any tumbling if you get lost like she did and a vault is even more dangerous with how fast and high you are throwing your body.

https://youtu.be/RxN2b2fs9eM

If any other elite athlete has a bad play and decides to keep competing, for the most part there isn't a chance that they MIGHT DIE.

It is a fact that gymnasts have died from not being totally engaged in their routines.

On another note, lets say that Simone had decided to keep competing, but because she wasn't with it she had a chance to seriously fuck up the overall score of the team. Wouldn't it make more sense to allow the backup (who's there for this exact reason) to step in to ensure that the ship doesn't sink?

Interesting fact I heard in the DP show this morning... Dale Jr was in the race when his father died. One week later Jr raced again. I suspect driving is pretty dangerous too. I agree that deciding to not further harm the team score is a great reason to back out.

Yuck. Bad take.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I can see both points. But I choose to believe in a sport where confidence in yourself is key that when your mental balance is off that the withdrawal might have been the best move. She was known specifically for her self control and awareness of her positions in space. Both were horribly off on that vault.

This one is tough to criticize...my immediate impulse was "no way you can't do this to our team!"....but after long thought if she was in that bad of a place mentally it may have actually helped the team get the silver and be on the podium. Old school me vs me now is conflicted. Was it selfish?...I don't know...was it to help the team? I just don't know...Crazy world right (no fans there and no cheering) and I can't find a way to fault her without trying to think for her and that just ain't happening. I hope she competes in the individuals because I love nothing more than an American, hand over chest beside the gold medal, singing that damn beautiful song....let's go

HokieHighVPI03

I don't know how she competes individually if this has been looming over her head for so long. You just don't come into the Olympics after a long period of self doubt and grow out of the "yips" in 36 hours time. Especially after withdrawing yourself in your first competition.

If she's able to put an alternate in her place, I'd have more respect for her for bowing out completely and letting someone else have a shot.

It's one thing to sacrifice your 4 years of hard work and Olympic dream if you're mentally not there, but why risk sabotaging 3 to 4 other girl's dreams who have probably worked harder than you to get there.

100%. The brave thing to have done is to realize you aren't there and bow out to a deserving teammate. I find it ridiculous we are celebrating this.

Accountability sure has changed since I have been alive and it really hasn't been all that long. Everyone is going through something, Nobody is special. It is how you respond that determines who you are.

So let's play this out: Biles continues to compete instead of withdrawing.
A) She pulls it together and USA wins gold.
B) She can't do the moves. Everyone is watching her failure and USA loses.
C) She pushes and messes something up, hits her head, concussion/scary "athlete gets stretchered out" moment.
D) Catastrophic fall. Biles is paralyzed for the rest of her life.

An athlete with shaken confidence is definitely more likely to injure themselves in high risk sports. So C and D are more likely than usual.

Let me ask: Is option A worth a higher risk of option D? Can you even compete if option D is on your mind?

I truly don't believe this is a matter of "quitting on your team." In a high-risk sport like gymnastics, it's a literal matter of life or death.

Get Angry, Bud!

The issue I have is that she's openly said she struggles with the pressure way before the Olympics started. So why even go? You care about your teammates as they say in every interview. Acknowledge you aren't capable before you steal the spot of someone else willing to actually compete.

No one obviously wants anyone to get hurt or die (while technically anyone could die during anything, that death scenario seems a bit of a stretch).

She did what she did and that's fine. I just don't think it should be celebrated as much when you sit down and think of all the drama, aspirations, expectations, hard work, and determination of others she may have selfishly wasted of she's known for a while she wasn't mentally there.

Everyone criticizing Biles has an assumption of what they would do if they were in her shoes. Here's the thing - none of us are. She's the greatest ever in her sport, and the pressure on her is unlike anything any gymnast has ever had.

Go read about what the people in "power" at USA Gymnastics have done to her and others over the last 30 years. They had power, and did jack shit in terms of responsibility to their athletes.

Athletes in general have lots of fame and influence but not much "power"

Maybe she felt like she was quitting on her teammates. Maybe she thought she could just push through it. Maybe she felt like she would be letting down her country. You know all the shit idiots on social media are accusing her of.

I don't believe I suggested any of those options? She knew her mental health wasn't there. She shouldn't have boarded the plane. Shaken confidence doesn't spring up while you are mid air in the Olympics. That is the totality of my argument. Why risk B, C, D?

There is no way to know that she wasn't "all there" on the plane. Maybe she got to Japan, did her first practice session and something felt off. She did the preliminary competition and wasn't right. Practiced again, felt worse.
Wanted to try to keep it together for her teammates. They all call her their leader and their inspiration, after all.
Does a vault. Her spatial awareness is off. All the proprioceptive danger signals that she trained away come flooding back and she bails out of her flip early.
Walks away shaken and goes to the locker room. At this point, she (direct quote from Biles) "doesn't trust herself".

This is a completely possible (and I believe likely) situation. And since we don't know, let's fucking give her the fucking benefit of the doubt and lay the fuck off.

Get Angry, Bud!

I appreciate your argument but swearing at me because I don't agree is childish and unnecessary.

It felt necessary to convey the force of my thoughts. I'm sorry if you were offended.

Get Angry, Bud!

Thumbs up dude.

This is just a light hearted discussion about whether, in my opinion, I think she shouldn't have gone in the first place. I tend to present the less popular side of topics because it helps generate communication and promote a different point of view others might not have thought about.

It's no fun debating with a bunch of people that agree with you, that's just called a circle jerk.

I'm not saying she's a bad person or she's weak or inferior. Using the term choke might've implied that by accident, but I'm just saying that in retrospect, she should've handled this mental situation long before when she was giving interviews in 2019/2020 about it and then continuing to reference it months ago when she knew it was a growing issue.

I also hate the media. Usually any topic, their attention is misdirected for the sake of ratings. So while the 3 girls that competed and got left out to dry got one 5 minute interview last night (where they had to talk about Simone for half of it), Simone will get all the attention when I feel the actions of the 3 vastly out weigh anything Simone has done this Olympics.

Amen. Seems simple to me- if you are not "all there" mentally, let someone else go and represent the USA. Let the first alternate go. Simple. God why is it so difficult to understand what mental health is. I've watched first responders deal with ever imaginable call, death etc without issue and then breakdown on a simple call for a sick child or an adult who is just having a bad day. It's disgusting this attitude we take where we expect people to just perform and never show their human side. Micheal Phelps even that's talked in detail about the struggles he had and what it lead to instead of reaching out for help or even acknowledging her had problems.

The point is that if Phelps wasn't mentally there, that's fine. NOBODY is arguing that. What we are arguing is that if that was the case, Phelps should let the guy that finished second in the trials go instead. Just as Biles should have done. What's the harm in that? Nobody is "judging" Biles. If you aren't at the peak of your mental game, say so and let the alternate go. That is NOT shitting on Biles in ANY way. It's not, despite your search to be offended here.

All I want you to consider is maybe she didn't feel that way until it was too late to "let someone else go". Unless you can tell me the substitution rules for Olympic gymnastics AND the exact moment Biles knew she shouldn't compete, it doesn't make sense to lay any blame. We just don't know enough.

Get Angry, Bud!

I'm not blaming Biles for anything. My opinion is that you can comment on this in a practical way without dismissing her mental health - which I am not doing. Sua Cravens retired from the NFL because he couldn't wrap his head around it. Good for him. You don't HAVE to be an NFL player. Biles could walk away now and nobody would argue she is the GOAT.

Blindly saying people don't understand mental health when you don't know them is a slippery slope in my opinion.

Just because you don't agree with an opinion doesn't mean the one you're responding to doesn't have an understanding on mental health or have been trained to assess mental health.

Secondly, not knowing if persons involved have issues of mental health themselves. Especially considering in this community where the vast majority of us probably went through and were present for one of the most traumatic events in American history.

In her defense, the SI swimsuit issue was shot 6 months before. SI probably released it that month for just extra publicity.

Accountably hasn't changed our willingness to actually talk about and address issues has. We aren't making people suck it up and get back out there, we aren't making men feel like they can't talk about what bothers them we aren't saying people who ask for help are weak. We are acknowledging that mental health is just as important as physically health.

Its a good conversation topic. I too have some inclinations towards both sides. I think a lot about how she might reflect on this 10 years from now. It's such an incredible situation to be at the Olympics, let alone in her position of dominance, and one that she won't likely won't be able to re-capture in 4 years. Certainly as I have gotten older I have regretted some shots I didn't take. But, I wasn't flying through the air turning over a million times either. If she injured herself permanently, then 10 years from now it could very easily be regret for pushing herself when she knew she shouldn't. I fully support her decision by the way, it was only hers to make. She is paid and sponsored as an Olympic athlete though, and I imagine there will be some fallout on that front. Perhaps thats one of the most intriguing elements. Most people are expected to perform their duty when they aren't at their best. But many people get sick days too, and mental health is a fully legitimate ailment.

After everything she's accomplished, the fame, the trauma from sexual abuse, the continuing expectations, perhaps she is just ready to move on from competing. Maybe it took being in the spotlight again to really understand that.

Maybe she'll be back in 3 years and in great mental and physical shape. Who's to say!

I thought Simone looked dangerously out of it on that vault attempt. Trying to continue could have basically turned into a form of self-harm. I think it was pretty brave of her to not try to push through when all eyes were on her.

We've taken away these athlete's support systems by trying to hold these Games during a pandemic, and we're seeing the direct results of that.

exactly, in slow motion, you can see the lost look in her eyes on that vault, she almost looked unconscious. very dangerous situation for a gymnast.

my first thought was i can't believe she is giving up, but the more i think about it, i support her decision...like i said above, a case of the yips for a gymnast is a lot more dangerous than it is for a baseball player

To recap cuz I feel like people think I'm some heartless heathen demanding perfection and wanting athletes to purposefully go out and injure themselves for the sake of my Olympic viewership:

What Simone did was fine for her if that's what she thought was in her best interest.

My take was more about how I felt it affected those around her. Knowing this wasn't a spur of the moment concern, I think it would've been a much more poignant action had she dropped out prior and let able/willing gymnasts take her place. Maybe go as an alternate yourself so you can still cheerlead, be a team leader, and give your presence to the younger, inexperienced Olympians trying to earn a Gold. Your reputation, experience, and perceived confidence would still be infectious to those competing.

Not having to deal with adversity mid event also might've helped give those competing more preparation time for what they needed to do since they wouldn't have been blindsided by their leader leaving the floor unannounced.

So, you assume the others weren't prepared? And where thrown to the wolves when having to fill in for her? @BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

Actually yes, I am saying that.

When you and another are not scheduled to perform a certain exercise, you do not prepare for it that night. I believe 2 of those girls were forced to step up in events they were not prepared to compete with just 5 minutes heads up and then by rule, only given 30 seconds to warm up for them prior to their routine.

While they're still trained in those apparatus, if you're not thinking about having to do it, you're not prepared for it, especially at a professional level.

I think anyone in any walk of life would struggle with that type of scenario.

I'm a very good golfer, but if you told me, "oh, by the way, you tee off in 5 minutes" and I wasn't aware I was playing, I'd play like garbage for the first 4 holes probably.

You can believe whatever you want. You weren't behind the scenes. The other girls are top 10 in the world. Period. They were ready.

As for the golf analogyyou aren't a pro. You tell John Rahm or Dustin Johnson they tee off in 5 minutes they'll figure it out and shoot 65.

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

Well when the girls themselves say it, I'm allowed to believe it.

It doesn't matter if you're Top 10 on the world. If your mind is set on one thing and you're told to do something else, you're unprepared for it and at a disadvantage. I don't see how that's a bad take on the situation.

Your golf analogy probably wouldn't hold much water either. Players practice courses for days, I'd doubt any pro shoots 65 on a course they aren't prepared to play.

You're using an article (which I've already read) comparing a tour pro to playing an Average Joe's public home course where they can drive 50% of the greens, greens are super easy, and water hazards and bunkers aren't really in play since they hit the ball so far?

GTFO

I like Rahm, but put him on a PGA level course with no preparation, no warm up, and no practice rounds; I bet he shoots at or just above par (which is considered average)

Just because you're considered a pro doesn't mean you are immune to disadvantage.

When you and another are not scheduled to perform a certain exercise, you do not prepare for it that night.

Is this actually the case though?

Because in a sport like gymnastics where the possibility of injury is so high, it would seem downright reckless to not plan for an alternate to compete at any given moment.

For the gymnastics team competition only three of the four compete in any given exercise. I forget how many of them Simone was set to compete in (I'd assume most) but her stepping down led to her teammates having to unexpectedly do exercises they weren't anticipating they'd have to perform. I'm assuming it was too late for Simone to be replaced by the alternate for team USA since the competition had already started.

Yeah you're right. Athletes have never been coerced by anyone ever to put themselves in dangerous situations they know they shouldn't be for any reason whatsoever......

I've always disliked how the Olympics crams swimming finals into the same night.

Someone competing for medals shouldn't have to worry about juggling 2 or 3 medal races back to back.

I thought it looked like Ledecky focused on the 1500m as what she really wanted to win and just did what she could in the 200m without exhausting her energy hoping for the best.

Titmus though came with purpose these Olympics evidenced by her coaches reactions towards all her hard work.

The fact that Michael Phelps was able to go 8/8 in Beijing is so impressive given that he had days where he had multiple finals. Pretty sure he had an individual final one night and then less than an hour later (I think) swam in a relay final. Just insane.

His performance in that Olympics was legendary and he's earned everything he has now. Mostly skill with a little bit of luck, but overall that's probably the most dominant performance in sporting history I can think of.

It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

Wow, this thread went nuclear!

I have a different take on the whole Biles situation. I have no clue whether she was dealing with mental health issues, a lack of mental toughness, or a case of hurt pride because of the poor showing initially. All I can do is take her at her word, and say that for the sake of her physical safety I'm glad she backed out.

I think what should be celebrated is the fact that the team brought the silver home. That is an insane accomplishment. I liken it to the Bucs, taking Tom Brady off the field during the Super Bowl last year after a couple of bad throws and vicious sacks that could cause detriment to his physical health, yet competing all the way to the final whistle only to lose by a point or two. These young women had to jump into a situation where they loss their leader, the "goat" and they showed great strength, will, and desire to fight till the last routine with the Russians, only to come up short, yet still bring home a silver. Their mental health after losing their leader is just as notable as Biles'. When they won the silver, I felt like it embodied the American spirit more than anything else I've seen thus far during the Olympics. They showed true grit (not that CJF type grit either...lol).

I hate that most of the spotlight, and most of this thread has revolved around Biles. The media has told the story in a similar manner, and it diminishes the Herculean accomplishment that these young ladies put on.

I'll admit i did miss this one portion of one of your earlier comments

I also hate the media. Usually any topic, their attention is misdirected for the sake of ratings. So while the 3 girls that competed and got left out to dry got one 5 minute interview last night (where they had to talk about Simone for half of it), Simone will get all the attention when I feel the actions of the 3 vastly out weigh anything Simone has done this Olympics.

It's all good, there's a lot going on in the thread.

Problem with internet debates is you can't perceive tone. So everyone gets all up in arms about relatively simple opinions when if you're able to talk in person chilling over a few beers, you're more likely to come to a general understanding of what the other person actually thinks/believes.

and to think, the US should have won gold since Russia wasn't even supposed to be allowed in the competition...

It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

I'm fuzzy on the Russia thing. I know last Olympics they banned "Russia" cuz of doping, but if the athletes could prove they did everything clean, they were permitted to compete.

I don't have much opposition to them competing if they're continuing to show they're clean. But if there's more underground stuff I don't know about what's actually going on with ROC, then I'll need to research it more.

VT Marketing Class of 2009

But the problem was that the Russians were doing systemic cheating. It wasn't on an athlete by athlete basis. Proving that you are 'clean' when you are associated with an organization that supports and promotes cheating should be just about impossible.

The country was banned from the Olympics because it has been proven that they cheated and that their athletes were complicit in the cheating - yet their athletes are still there and winning medals.

What's the point of banning a country that has been proven guilty of egregious foul play, and then let the athletes still compete. Just what is getting banned in this case?

In that case:

VT Marketing Class of 2009

Their flag and their national anthem - that's basically what was banned. The message this sends is that there is a relatively minimal penalty for cheating and getting caught. The world knows what "ROC" means, and Russia is still going to take their national pride out of every medal they take home, and that's the bottom line to them - demonstration of success on a world stage.

Instead of taking the hard approach the IOC barely gave them a slap on the wrist, and it just sent the message to the world that the punishment would absolutely be worth the risk, instead of banning them outright for the current summer and next winter olympics.

The ban was pretty harsh the first time it was enforced, IIRC, but it's pretty spineless at this point. (What I remember is that no athletes that trained/lived in Russia were allowed to compete, and those outside Russia had to have a clean testing record)

This would be like the NCAA banning a program from the tourney, and then letting the athletes play as a team without the school pep band in attendance and eliminating the team name on the jerseys. The execution of the ban is flawed.

Yeah, during the winter games, didn't they only allow Russian athletes to compete if they hadn't been living/training in Russia and had a clean doping record? I felt like that was a way more fair situation to everyone else. (May have been Rio, I can't fucking remember anymore ๐Ÿ˜…)

There's a documentary on Netflix called "Icarus" that goes into this in pretty deep detail.

Russia has run a state-sponsored doping program since the 60s when it was the Soviet Union. The issue came to a head at the Sochi Olympics where it's been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that with the help of the FSB (USSR KGB) the Russian anti-doping labs swapped out "hot" urine for clean urine for all of its athletes when they were randomly tested. In response to this, WADA recommended that Russia be banned from competing. The IOC (just like FIFA) is spineless and bought off and allowed athletes from Russia to compete if they could prove that they were clean. So in '16, '18, & '20 they've been able to compete as "Olympic Athletes of Russia" or something else, wear uniforms with the Russian flag, have Russian flags in the dorm area, etc. Basically made a farce of the whole thing.

They failed to address the issue by allowing Russian athletes to compete. If they'd told Russia to fuck off and banned them for the next 12 years (3 Summer & 3 Winter games) then maybe Russia would have thought twice about doing this in the future. If this is the result, they'll just keep doing it.

Total fucking joke that "Russians (real people from Russia) " can compete and medal in the olympics but "Russia" is banned. Fucking joke. Tells you how corrupt the IOC is- a joke. If the billions in kick backs for stadiums that are disposable didn't tip you off, this should. Total disgrace. Why have country limits at all? If you allow "russians" to compete and earn medals? Just have Katie Ledecki swim for Katie Ledecki... this is NO fucking different than that. Disgrace

LMAO at that article. How is Hawaii different than say, Maryland? There were "native" marylanders before they were conquered too and became a US State. Fucking ridiculous premise.

The crazy part is one the four man "Russian Olympic Committee" skull team 2 of the four were caught doping (at a random non-scheduled event) and Russia was originally just going to replace those two members before eventually deciding to withdraw the team.

So they are still doing the doping...

lol. The olympics banned Russia alright... checks notes.... see's russian athletes competing and medaling in the olympics. Yeah the NCAA banned VT football, but allows our football team to compete as the association of orange and maroon too. lol "banned"... its anything but.

Nice to see Ledecky win. It was also pretty cool seeing that 17 year old kid from Alaska winning gold. This is what this thread needs and a lot less BS about the Biles situation. Hopefully we can get this thread back on track.

I mean it's definitely because there were two UVA teammates swimming in the same Olympic final where both were medal contenders (and both ended up medaling). They showed the livestream of the teammates as they would with other athletes and their families (or the Alaskan swimmer and her school). They definitely would've done the same thing for literally any other school lol. I didn't really think it was excessive. Just a cool situation that classmates/teammates competing and winning together on the highest stage.

Lol fair. I do think they made more of a deal of it because UVA women won the NCAA national championship this year? Would make sense but yeah they definitely didn't do an entire segment about those guys.

I'm a bit late to the game, so I chose to reply as a new comment rather than join in. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on Simone Biles, BUT I do not think it is fair to harshly criticize anyone when you are not in their shoes and it is especially hard in this scenario.

This competition is very different from the 2016 Olympics and competitions since then because the last time Biles competed in the Olympics, she was being raped by the team doctor. A large reason why Simone came back for 2020 is because she is the only remaining survivor from Larry Nassar that is still on the national team. She wanted to fight for her and the hundreds (yes you read that right) of other gymnasts who were raped for years and USA Gymnastics and Michigan State looked the other way.

So yes, it is 100% possible for a person to be okay one minute and then not be okay mental health wise because of flashbacks and triggers. Has anyone on TKP been raped? If not, maybe you're not the best person to weigh in on when a trigger does or does not happen to a victim of rape.

Rape victims have PTSD. Would you criticize a Veteran with PTSD for not wanting to go back to combat? Would you question a Veteran's triggers?

You dropped this.

All good points yet you are still falling into the trap of "don't criticize because xyz". If your line of thinking were applied to everyone no one would ever be at fault. Everyone is unique yet that does not entitle us all to immunity from criticism.

Did you read my entire comment? I am not suggesting that no one should be criticized. I do think it is interesting that a forum made up almost entirely of men is so quick to tell a female rape victim when she should or should not be mentally okay to compete. That's all.

Make it about whatever you would like. The fact is everyone has issues. Her issues are public therefore easier to defend. I will not entertain this conversation further. Have a great rest of your week.

right -- you're not asking for immunity from criticism, you're asking for empathy

Didn't know a primary reason for her return revolved around her desire to fight against the evils that she was exposed to. Would love a link to read up on that story.

Has anyone on TKP been raped? If not, maybe you're not the best person to weigh in on when a trigger does or does not happen to a victim of rape.

I disagree with this, I don't know if a pre-requisite to express views on this story, is a prior sexual assault instance. It would surely add insight for sure, but I think it's dangerous to say who, and who shouldn't speak on a topic because of their past (or lack thereof) of past experiences. Everyone is entitled to expressing their opinion/criticisms.

I'm sure I'll get a couple of downvotes for this view, but I think it's important that everyone has a voice on TKP, regardless if we approve of those views or not. If it doesn't go against CG's we should be able to have a fruitful conversation about whatever topic is discussed (regardless if we went through a specific experience or not).

Yet again...just my take...

"If there weren't a remaining survivor in the sport they would've just brushed it to the side," Biles said.

Yes, everyone is entitled to express their opinions. And I am entitled to help push others to be more empathetic towards sexual abuse survivors. 1 in 6 women has been sexually assaulted which means everyone on this forum knows someone who has been a victim.

Thanks for sharing!

And we appreciate you're efforts to push others towards sexual abuse awareness. But some people like myself/males, have experienced sexual assault as well, so know that everyone has an experience to pull from, and in turn everyone should have a voice as well. We appreciate you're voice in the room, I appreciate ALL the voices in the room, because everyone's opinion matters, regardless if I agree with it or not. I think that's all I was getting at. Thanks for being so cordial as always JM.

Great interacting with you too! I am deeply sorry for the experiences you have had in the past. Male sexual assault is not talked about enough and is often brushed under the rug and that is equally terrible in my opinion. This is a sensitive subject for me too (my wife) and so I do want to help others. Sometimes that comes in the form of helping to inform others. I created my main comment because Simone's PTSD was not mentioned when talking about dropping out for mental health reasons.

Yes, came here to post the same thing. Here are some excerpts from another article :

https://www.cnn.com/2021/07/28/us/simone-biles-olympics-gymnastics-physi...

Gymnastics is obviously physically demanding with a high injury rate. But it is extremely difficult psychologically as well. Many of the skills could kill you. When Kevin Durant's foot was off by an inch in Game 7 of the NBA's Eastern Conference semifinals, his shot was worth two points instead of three, and the Brooklyn Nets lost in overtime. When Riley McCusker's foot was off by an inch on her beam dismount at the 2017 American Cup, she slammed backward onto her neck and then rolled over it.

For every perfect, floaty flip performed in competition, there are thousands done in practice, many of them ending with scrapes, crashes, and haunting near-misses.

When Simone Biles scratched most of the Olympic team final, she said it was not because of a physical injury, but her mental health. This doesn't mean she felt sad, or didn't have her heart in it to compete. It means that her psychological state put her at significant physical risk. If her brain wouldn't play along with what her body knows how to do, she could be seriously injured.

She said in morning practice that she had a little bit of the twisties. The twisties are a mysterious phenomenon -- suddenly a gymnast is no longer able to do a twisting skill she's done thousands of times before. Your body just won't cooperate, your brain loses track of where you are in the air. You find out where the ground is when you slam into it.

Swiss gymnast Giulia Steingruber got the twisties in 2014. "When I wanted to twist, especially on vault ... I had no feeling where I am. I was really scared," Steingruber said in a 2016 documentary. "It was quite tough for me, because I didn't understand why it came, and I couldn't stop it. It was just strange for me, and it was horrible. The feeling was really horrible."
She had to relearn it, starting with a simple half twist on floor. "I started to learn the twist again like a small child." In 2016, she won an Olympic bronze medal on vault.
Flipping and twisting at the same time can be extremely disorienting -- you can't just watch where you are with your eyes. You have to feel it. This is proprioception, a sense of where your body is in space and what it's doing.

Glad someone posted this. It's infuriating reading the takes above from people that have no idea what they're talking about.

I haven't really seen in said anywhere in here, and if I missed it, my apologies.

NBC coverage of the games has been HORRIBLE! While the expert commentary is pretty good as usual, the overall coverage is just hot garbage. From cutting away from gymnastics routines to do replays, the cringy background stories that they keep pumping out, the really bad questions they ask athletes after winning/losing/not performing as well as expected, etc.

They focus on swimming and gymnastics and that's it until track & field starts. They throw a bone to other sports every now and again, but overall it's bad.

They lost me when they put commercial breaks in a live soccer game like WTF. The time zone thing has been the biggest issue here is before the events air in the evening I already know the results so it isnt as compelling but still fun to watch.

A couple more swimming medals for the US last night. Caeleb Dressel got his gold in the 100 freestyle. Was great to see and his reaction was heartwarming. Ledecky also anchored the US women to 4x200 free relay silver which was better than expected.

Also had forgotten about the men's synchronized diving 3 meter springboard. US got silver and China was pretty much untouchable ahead of them for the gold.

Finke in the 800m Men's Final had a miraculous last 25m to win the gold,
Ledecky almost got there but her catching up for the silver was terrific anyway,
Dresel had just enough at the end to hang on for the gold,
all great races.

Can't believe I forgot about Finke! What an incredible last 50. If I remember correctly he looked like he was in fourth or fifth at the final turn. Usually races of that length aren't as exciting as that one was.

Yeah, he was way out of contention, about a full body length in fourth and then at about 25m he just turned it on unbelievably to pull into first, amazing!

I watched the diving live (on the west coast it airs around 11 PM) and I was so disappointed they didn't show the Russian team's literal bellyflop on the replay. It was the last dive, they were in position to take bronze if they didn't fuck it up, and they did. Royally. Wound up in last place.

NIL deals are going to make a huge different for Olympic sports. When the athletes are in high school they typically commit to a college, but if they are a breakout star at the Olympics before or during college, they have a very difficult decision to make. I haven't had much to complain about with the actual broadcasts, but I also don't expect much given the lack of fans. However, FINDING the stuff I want to watch has been confusing. I didn't even realize until today that Wednesday's men's BB game against Iran was only available on Peacock. I guess someone at NBC HQ made the tough call between higher ratings or the carrot to get some more subscribers.

Also - No Bob Costas. Don't get me wrong - Terico has been and is an awesome anchor (and was in the '18 winter Olympics). But, it just doesn't feel like the Olympics to me without Costas in the broadcast. I had to go back a look at the timeline, but Costas has been involved in every games I have ever viewed in my life, and to a degree this is like having sports Christmas without Santa Claus.

EDIT: Costas' take on the challenges leading up. He makes a good point about the lead-up timing. NBC didn't know there wouldn't be crowds until three weeks before the start. This is likely having a big impact in the quality of the broadcasts.

I just realized Costas hasnt been there and I knew something felt off.
