New alumni chapters?

Hi folks, I've been encountering more and more Hokies in the area where I live (Tri-Cities, WA) and it's started me thinking that we might be getting a large enough alumni population to get an alumni chapter going. However, when I went on the alumni relations webpage, I couldn't find any information on how one would go about setting up a new alumni chapter. Does anyone have any experience in this?

(Annnnnd now the word alumni has lost all meaning because I've read it too many times today)

Just contact the Alumni Association and tell them what you want to do and they will walk you through the process. Anyone can start one anywhere, really. And if you have several people interested it will help even more. Most start super small and gain ground from there. I know San Diego started very small in 2008 and then started growing more rapidly in 2012 but they were represented even with small numbers. The different associations around the country do some really impressive things, and they love to gain footholds in new areas and states.

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

Be ready to be really frustrated, we beg for help here in the first coast and just recently have started getting it from the association. But some things will forever remain secret like contact information for alums in your area. Just don't hope to start a Hokie Club chapter, been trying for years in Florida.

Don't bother talking to Alumni office. Zero assistance, head stuck in 1980s administration ideology. Tried over and over but as Fireman said, too many roadblocks and too shortsighted.

Good Luck.

They have an internal prioritization of Chapters, and if you're not on one of the higher populated ones, it can be difficult to get their attention. And even if you are one, they aren't the greatest in an open line of communication.

I will not donate to Virginia Tech Athletics as long as Justin Fuente is the head coach of VT Football. Enough is enough.

I did this once before. I wrote an email to the Alumni Association and asked for a list of Hokies in the area and they sent it over. I reached out to each person on the list and asked them for emails for people who were interested, started setting up events. They eventually listed me on the website, but the group never really got going more than 5 members. I guess it was an official group because I received an invitation for a reception the week of the Sugar Bowl, Frank was going to be there. At your distance, you may want to stay unofficial as the Alumni Association does have some requirements.

I am not sure what to do with my hands now

Wow. When was this? This is the first time I've heard anyone say they got a contact list.

I have spoken to them multiple time over the past 15 years and they have ALWAYS told me the are forbidden from sharing contact info. And when I sent them copies of guidelines from other universities, examples of work around, etc they stopped being interested or make some other bullshit excuse.

This was 2009. I am an officer in an Alumni club now and they send us contact info every other year. The weird thing is, it will have phone number and address, but not email, that is protected by some law.

For those of y'all that have had trouble, If y'all want contact info of other people who have done this, I can provide that to you.

Maybe it's y'all, perhaps they have seen the swill that you post on this website/////sssssssssssss(orta)

I just copied your post and sent it to the woman in charge of chapters. If you want to send me your email address to jsbrownpe@yahoo.com, I will forward that as well.

Doing better and better.

Done, thanks!
