Film Vault: GameDay VT-Miami 2003

Virginia Tech Hokies football, basketball, athletics blog and forum featuring: unique columns, breaking news, film studies, in-depth analysis, recruiting, videos and jokes.

I had fun watching and writing this the last time, so I decided to do it again. I hope you enjoy reading and reminiscing. Happy Friday y'all!

Even though GameDay was in Oklahoma for Bedlam, a lot of the show was dedicated to a memorable matchup in Blacksburg.

Be sure to check out Hokietapes massive film collection.

0:00–1:10 - I really miss that intro. Bring it back ESPN.

1:28 - Survival Saturday! (What's the job title for the person who has to come up with all of these weekend catch phrases?)

1:31 - A reminder about the whoopin' we took in Morgantown the previous game. If I knew the tour bus was stopping there on our trip down memory lane, I wouldn't have bought tickets. I thought Kevin Jones would have a career day in the snake pit against the 'Eers. Instead, Tech got out gained by 199 yards on the ground. That doesn't happen often for the Hokies, lopsided rushing totals, but when it does, the losses are branded into your brain.

2:04 - Not one SEC team among the lot, my how times have changed.

2:28 - I know hindsight is 20-20, but Maurice Sikes really said of Lane Stadium at night, "It's just like a home game to us anyways because it's a business trip." AT LEAST YOU PROBABLY ENJOYED SUNDAY'S COMPLIMENTARY CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST, MAURICE.

2:54 - Those are depressing statistics.

3:30–3:50 - Al Groh was busy scribbling down notes while Corso delivered his coaching points.

4:43 - "I want to trust Bob again, I really do." — therapy patients all over the state of Oklahoma.

5:29 - I forgot we snapped Miami's conference winning streak (27).

7:30 - Walter's sunglasses are tremendous.

10:47–10:52 - Winslow, "went crazy", for 48 yards, no touchdowns, and a long gain of 8 yards.

11:18–11:22 - "I think Miami, with defense, Berlin throwing the football will win the game." Well Herbie, you nailed half that prediction. Miami's defense played well enough, but the Canes offense couldn't get out of its way. As much as ESPN wanted Berlin to be the next Ken Dorsey, he wasn't. Berlin threw for just 164 yards, a pick-six, and another interception.

REMINDER: Tech completed just two passes for 44 yards that game. Neither were thrown by starter Bryan Randall, and one of Marcus' completions was for a touchdown. Even though Bud Foster's defense gave up more yards than we're accustomed to (377), the hard hitting, attacking, high risk-reward, confusion inducing, turnover producing style of play yielded a vintage performance.

At some point we're going to have to come up with rankings for all-time BeamerBall wins. 2003 Virginia Tech–Miami will be near the top.

My turkey legs for a video clip with that audio.

I could swear I've seen that somewhere, but I just wasted a ton of time trying to find it. No such luck. The audio is definitely available online and can easily be found. Maybe one of our talented video editors can splice something together.

I don't miss Trev Alberts. At all.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I miss Saturday night games in Blacksburg. Seems like we always had at least one or two a year in the Big East.

i've been saying for years, BRING BACK BUBBA SPARX GAMEDAY!!

good god how long have we had big & rich? however long it is it's too damn long.

Seriously, what the eff is a "ting tang?"

I WAS THERE!!!!!

me too, called my mom from the middle of the field after drinking all my purse bourbon. left a voicemail talking about how i have grass from lane stadium in my shoes and how i'll never take them off ever again.

SO... DID YOU TAKE THEM OFF?!?!?!

oh yeah probably like 20 minutes later when i was drunk eating pokey sticks in a yard somewhere.

I think this has to be the biggest win in program history.

The talent that was on Miami was insane. That team had Sean Taylor, Vince Wilfork, Kellen Winslow, Jonathan Vilma, Frank Gore, DJ Williams, Devin Hester, Antrel Rolle, and Eric Winston just to name a few.

It was the year after they had what I believe was the greatest college football team ever. So a lot of carry overs were still left. Just think about this, their tight ends that year were Kellen Winslow, Kevin Everett, and Greg Olsen. Three future NFL tight ends, two of which ended up being pretty damn good.

Rip his freaking head off!

Eh, their 2001 is quoted more often. 17 future first-round picks, 38 draftees overall, and a combined 41 Pro Bowl appearances by 13 players. And the vast majority of the big-name guys from 2002 were there in 2001, plus 11 guys who were drafted in the 2002 draft, including such names as Ed Reed, Jeremy Shockey, Clinton Portis, and Bryant McKinnie.

And to think we'd have sent that game to OT if Ernest Wilford had his hands that day...

I was a junior in high school and my uncle had tickets on the front row behind the Miami bench. The atmosphere was what every VT home game should aspire to be. There are three things I will always remember from this game:
1. Hall's strip for a TD (happened right in front of me)
2. Being cussed out by Sean Taylor (scared me, a 16yr old, to death)
3. This play...

Go Hokies

The people on the sidelines laughing really make this pic.

haha yes. especially the guy pointing

Party Positive.

Great memories. This picture was the desktop background on my PC for a long time.

"Exit light..."

This was by far my favorite game. Some jagoff tried to push me out of "his seats" way up in the East stands closest to the SE, but my buddies and I held our ground. It was deafening the entire time. You could feel the energy. I especially loved screaming Fuck Miami into the intercom at Burger King around 1:30 am on gameday with about 40 other students who just let out of a party nearby.

For about 5 years, Miami was our biggest rival. You could probably convince me that it should have been UVA - but the hatred just wasn't there. Ask any student between 2000-2005 what game they wanted to win most and the answer was almost always Miami. Miami was the game that defined the season. For about 2 months leading up to the 2003 game, the dorm I lived in would break out with spontaneous f*** Miami chants. You never knew when it would happen but every couple days or so...

There was a reason Lane was loud and completely filled 30 mins before kickoff. The likes of which we haven't seen since.

Agreed, as I am one such student. UVA was like a little brother you always knew you could beat when you wanted (and the refs didn't COMPLETELY suck). Miami was always a challenge and it seemed that the higher ranked team rarely won. I'm pretty disappointed that Miami declined so much since its taken away a lot of the energy around that game.

"We judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their behavior" Stephen M.R. Covey

“When life knocks you down plan to land on your back, because if you can look up, you can get up, if you fall flat on your face it can kill your spirit” David Wilson

yeah, it almost kind of sucks that they've fallen off so much. And it's definitely a damn shame that we are now in a rotation where we play both Miami and UVA at home or away in any given year, we're no longer guaranteed to play one of the two in Lane every year. Now UNC, Pitt, and Duke are our permanent off-year home games.

I miss hating Miami like that. Don't get me wrong there is still hate but it just doesn't feel the same.

They're on their way back. I'm ready to hate Duke Johnson. Kid is sick. From Bitter's beat writer/better know an opponent series, it sounds like Morris is going to be hate-able too.

I hated Jacory Harris for his arrogance, but loved when we played him. I'm hoping Morris can live up to the same "hype" and standard Jacory set before him.

Every time Harris dropped back to pass, I breathed a sigh of relief.

"Exit light..."

"Probably the final really big game in the history of the Big East Conference"

Truest prediction regarding conference realignment I've ever heard.

This has to be one of my favorite VT games of all time. It was my freshman year, and we had that stupid athletic card system, and I couldn't get a ticket. I was pretty much alone on my hall during the game. I lived in Lee with a view of Lane Stadium, so I popped open my window (for proper ambience) and watched it on TV.

Besides the "give it to me, Roscoe" moment, this had to be my other favorite play of the game:

ESPN was on about a 7- or 10-second delay, so I pretty much knew what happened before the ball was even snapped.

"Exit light..."

god do I love those Uniforms!

This whole thread is a trip down memory lane.

I was @ Tech from 02-06 and I still fucking hate Miami. Them and wvu. Yes, even more than UVA.

"0:00–1:10 - I really miss that intro. Bring it back ESPN."

What I really miss are our old uniforms. They were totally bad-assed. Not like the clown suits we wear now.

"Down in Blacksburg its sure getting crucial. The Canes and Hokies is huge as usual."

I was there and its the best atmosphere i've been a part of at a VT game. It was fun from start to finish. That is including some of the 1999 games. The crowd was electric that night and the team did not disappoint.

First game i ever attended (was in high school) and it was a good first one. Miami you will always be my #1 hated and you got us back good for this game in 05. The 05 game hurt my little hokie heart :(

@VTimHokie85

Yeah that 2005 game sticks with me.

Now that I think of it, the games that stick with me the most are the two big Miami games from when I was at HokieTown: This one and the 2005 game. Then Logansneak sticks out in my mind, but I had long since matriculated.

I guess I could say, with new clarity, that the Miami game is my biggest appointment-viewing game every year. I'm ready to call this game a bona fide rivalry.
