Six Pick: Week 14

The bittersweet end of the college football regular season is here. These fourteen weeks have flown by and we are again at Championship Saturday. Conference pride and bowl destinations are at stake; we'll see very good games in most of these matchups. I still expect at least one shocker left, but who will provide it, and how will that shake up the BCS? For those not going to the games this weekend, this is your last Saturday to do absolutely nothing and have a valid excuse. Cheers and don't squander it.

I am really only thinking about the Virginia Tech Hokies this week. No apologies to the teams in other conferences. The media and fans can circle jerk the SEC later, as the BCS championship game approaches. This week is for the ACC Championship, even it matters little to those outside our footprint. My focus is on a team that has adapted, overcome, grown and is not satisfied. The 2011 Hokies make a strong case to be along side the '95, '99 and '04 teams on my personal Mount Rushmore of Hokie teams. It's easy to dream about the future with this squad, but right now I am really enjoying the present. Charlotte was great to us last year, and I am hoping it gets turned up to 11 this year. Let's enjoy one of the last remaining games of the season in true Hokie fashion and ROCK THE QUEEN CITY.

Friday, December 2nd

MAC Championship Game - Ford Field, Detroit, Mi Northern Illinois -3.5 vs Ohio 7:00 pm ESPN2

#MACtion, the place where Tuesday night football comes alive, any form of defense dies and the champion may get picked 3rd by their bowl partners. Don't feel too bad for these fine young men, a mid December trip to either Boise, Mobile or Detroit awaits them. OK, feel bad for them. It's Friday night before Championship Saturday and you are amped for the big day ... watching this game isn't going to mellow you out. Northern Illinois has a great O, but a D so bad that me and The Unofficial TKP tailgate could drop 4 TD's on them by halftime. Ohio has a superior defense and an offense that is quite formidable. Both teams feature top flight dual threat quarterbacks.

Pick and Rationale: Northern Illinois laying the points. No rhyme or reason, I expect no less than 900 yards of total offense and 75+ points and to be thoroughly entertained. Usually when cornered, I like to take the team with the better defense when the other matchups are pretty even, but not this time. I think the Huskies pull away from the Bobcats late here.

Saturday, December 3rd

C-USA Championship Game – Robertson Stadium, Houston, Tx 24 Southern Miss vs 6 Houston -13 noon ABC

Fate: Be destined to happen, turn out, or act in a particular way. A lot of variables have worked out favorably in Houston's fateful run at an undefeated season and a BCS cash cow game. Houston head coach Kevin Sumlin hired brash, young Dana Holgorsen as Offensive Coordinator in 2008 to install his version of the air raid offense to an unknown quarterback, Case Keenum. A SHIT TON of yards, touchdowns and accolades later improved the quality of life for all 3. It was all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows throughout Keenum's career. Then he tore his ACL in the 3rd game of his senior season last year. Fate didn't look so good then, but Keenum was granted a 6th year of eligibility. He overcame adversity, and a now mature Cougars have beaten every opponent, so far. There's one last game in Space City for a trip to the Sugar Bowl. Destiny looks pretty good for the Cougars.

Pick and Rationale: Southern Miss getting the points. I don't think that the Golden Eagles will win, but their defense is solid enough to slow down the Air Raid some. The Southern Miss offense, is overlooked and underrated, they will score some points to keep it interesting.

***

SEC Championship Game - Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Ga 14 Georgia vs 1 LSU -13.5 4:00 pm CBS

The SEC wins again. I am not talking about having both teams in the BCSCG (it's a lock). At 4:00 PM they're the only show in town. The Mike Slive Conference will draw a large TV rating. First things first though, no team is unbeatable. Teams as capable as the Bayou Bengals have lost to lesser teams than Georgia. That said, UGA will be looking down the barrel of the most athletic and deep team in the country. Dawgs, these cats play angry. Going 14-0 with that schedule would cement the Tigers as an all time great team, mentioned in the same breath as the '95 Cornhuskers and '01 Hurricanes even with their quarterback deficiencies. Les Miles and company are not losing this game, the SEC title and their place in history.

Pick and Rationale: Georgia getting the points. UGA has benefited from playing (and losing) to their two best opponents, the first two weeks of the season. Ten games and wins later, they have a lot of confidence behind their very good defense and quarterback Aaron Murray. They'll make LSU slug it out with them enough to keep it to a 10 point game.

***

B1G TenChampionship Game - RCA Dome, Indianapolis, In 13 Michigan State vs 15 Wisconsin -9.5 8:00 pm FOX

That was Wisky's first loss this season thanks to a last second Hail Mary. The 2nd loss came a week later, to another last second Hail Mary. This isn't EA Sports, the odds of losing this way twice in a row is pretty damn low. Those losses fall squarely on the defense as #ALLRUSSELLWILSONALMOSTEVERYTHING and #ALLMONTEEBALLEVERYTHING did enough to win. Statistically the Badgers defense is very good, but to my eyes they appear a bit more suspect than Michigan State's. That said, while both teams' offenses are performing well, the Badgers come across as shit housing the opposition. The most entertaining aspect of this game won't be all the points scored, but the Fox broadcast of this game with Gus Johnson calling the action. This is DVR worthy.

Pick and Rationale: Michigan State getting the points. I am on the Wisky band wagon and the winner will need 5 touchdowns to win this game. I have more faith in Bucky Badger, but beating Sparty by 10 or more points is another story as MSU is a tough team and won't quit.

***

Bedlam (de facto) Big XII Championship Game 10 Oklahoma at 3 Oklahoma State -3.5 8:00 pm ABC

Remember when Bedlam was going to be hot shit? Then Texas Tech and Iowa State happened. Neither team has been able to wash the stink of those losses off themselves. However, it is a good reminder of why we should wait until all 12 games are played to make grand declarations. Since the Big XII only has 10 teams, the conference championship game has been shelved. However, the winner of Bedlam can book a ticket to Glendale for the Junker Fiesta Bowl. A consolation prize that likely will be a slight disappointment for either team, but it really has to gnaw at the Cowboys. OU is a traditional power and an annual national championship contender; Okie State not so much. Mike Gundy is a good coach, but I think he'll have a really hard time replacing quarterback Brandon Weeden and being this close again.

Pick and Rationale: Okie State. Mike Gundy has never beaten OU as a player or coach, he WANTS this. OU has a meh defense and beat up offense. The Cowboys had a bye week to tweak their gameplan to take advantage this. Gundy will have his players believing (incorrectly) that they still have a shot at the BCSCG. That will be enough. Regardless of points, if OSU can't win this week, T. Boone Pickens may take the lot of them out back and execute them by firing squad.

***

ACC Championship Game - Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC 20 Clemson vs 5 Virginia Tech -7 8:00 pm ESPN

If I am Frank Beamer, my pre-game speech would go something like this:

23-3

TO HELL WITH EVERYTHING ELSE. Forget our winning streak, their collapse. I want you hungry. I want you pissed. Never you mind the rankings. 23-3. Clemson came to Blacksburg and embarrassed us. How did it feel being housed on National TV? Not one single touchdown. 23-3. The media has called us pretenders. {Pauses and looks in every player's eyes.} I don't see any fucking pretenders here. The Orange Bowl is on the line, but that's not what's important here. Earning back our respect is the reason we wanted to see Clemson again. You wanted your chance at redemption, well now you got it. TAKE IT.

Pick and Rationale: Virginia Tech. No other reason than I believe in this team's heart, character and leadership from Frank at the top and all the way down to the holder.

Stylin', profilin', limousine ridin', jet flyin', kiss-stealin', Son-of-a-Bitch BEER of the Queen City! WOOOOOOOOOOOO

Last year Ska Brewing was my ACCCG beer of the week. The Hokies walked out a champion. Far from it from me to mess with what works. This week's beer is Ska Brewing Euphoria Pale Ale. It's a clean pale ale with hints of citrus, hop bitterness and slightly sweet backend. A great all day tailgate beer that shouldn't leave me too damn blotto.

Quick Recap:

Annual Trip to BofA Stadium.... err, Championship Weekend #

Northern Illinois: Harnish will be too much
Houston: It takes bigger and faster players to slow down Keenum
Georgia: Dawgs defense is pretty strong, and Murray will keep it closer than we might think
Michigan State: They'll cover, but the Montee "Wrecking" Ball will carry Wisky
Okie State: A lot to play for, and it's at home.
VT: You thought Tajh Boyd struggled in the first meeting... wait until this weekend. I say Hokies defense turns in 2nd best performance of season (after UVa of course) and LThomas the Tank Engine and D4Wil keep on rolling. And InEnemyTerritory is on to something... Danny Coale is still open... hopefully he's still punting too.

Week 14 #

Northern Illinois - I pick against any team that prides itself off the triple option
Houston - Casey Keenum will throw for more TDs than total TDs scored by both teams in the above MAC game
LSU - Remember when Neyland stayed in the game against 04 auburn but still lost by 2 TDs? Well, LSU is better and UGA isn't as good.
MSU - Whisky will probably win but it'll be a close game. I believe the paid seat filler rumors.
Okie State - I think Okie State will beat OU by a substantial amount of points (40-50) and will not crack the top two. The BCS wanted the LSU/Bama re-match all season; this game will not change that. The resulting Mike Grundy conference, however, will be amazing.
THE GODDAMN FIGHTING GOBBLERS OF VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE AND STATE UNIVERSITY - Given that the OB will be against UL/Cincy/WVU, I'm thinking the team isn't really "looking ahead" to that. This game is their quasi-BCS game and they want revenge against the clemson team that basically pissed on our 50. I wouldn't be surprised at a slow start, but eventually we'll take care of business. James Gayle just needs to remember to shut up.

My last picks- only care about VT's bowl game. #

Northern Illinois- have no clue about the game but Ohio runs triple option according to some on the board. If you play gap disciplined football you can bend and not break.

Houston- Case Keenum. Game is in Houston. This team is an offensive juggernaut. I got them covering the 13 easily.

LSU- apparently the SEC Title means everything to SEC fans and players plus Miles will find a way to motivate the players if a championship game does not. Plus UGA just doesn't have the guns to keep up with the Tigers on Offense or Defense. Book the rematch in New Orleans (unfortunately).

Wisonsin- Hell, Wilson has to win a big game at some point in his career. Start now and represent your old boys here in the ACC.

Oklahoma- OK State hasn't played in a big game in a rather long time and they lost to Iowa State. Plus if both teams play to their potential there is no comparison- OU has too much depth and talent on BOTH sides of the ball, OK State let ISU run all over them in the fourth.

Virginia Tech- this setup reminds me so much of 2007 (and '05 to a degree). We lose (get embarrassed) at home, setting up for a classic title game (though 2005 was painful no doubt that near comeback was something else- Vick looked like the beast he was in the fourth quarter) rematch (not in 2005) where the team is indescribably motivated for revenge (see DW4's emotional speech and player interviews). Let's not kid ourselves boys and girls, we're gonna get Clemson's best hay-maker as we did in Blacksburg but the OFFENSE NEEDS TO STAY ON THE FIELD AND PUT UP POINTS. Hokies should cover> Edge to LT3 and their defense not being able to stop the read option which has become light years more effective since the last meeting. LET'S GO HOKIES!

Championship Week! #

Northern Illinois: Anyone that has contracted MACtion FEVER this year knows that Chandler Harnish is a "food-stamp-poor" man's Russell Wilson. The offense they run is perfectly tailored to his athletic ability. Just don't see Ohio being able to keep.

Houston: Cougars have only had 3 games all year in which they margin of victory was less than one score (UCLA, LTech, UTEP). Southern Miss is probably better than all three of those team...but it won't matter. Not with a shot at a BCS berth on the line, and a final audition for the most prolific QB in history before Heisman ballots are submitted. Cougs win big.

UGA: I don't think complacency will have anything to do with it being a close game. UGA has demonstrated over the second half of the season that they have to ability to field a competitive defense, and (in terms of pure skill) the Bulldogs will be LSU's toughest defensive matchup since Oregon in week one. Georgia'll give 'em hell. I still think LSU wins...but just imagine the outrage at the reality of 3 SEC teams, and neither of the two in the BCS Championship claiming the SEC title. That's going to irk A LOT of people. Except Bieber, of course:

Wisconsin: Madison is starting a late MONTEE4HEISMAN campaign; he'll get his touchdowns. And the Badgers will avenge the first of their heartbreakers. Maybe it's just me...but none of State's wins this year have jumped out at me, not even the Michigan victory, and those two losses to Notre Dame and Nebraksa, well those would be understandable if it was 1995. I think Sparty, I think "Meh."

Oklahoma: remember all the quotes from Tech players after their win last week over UVA, saying how they felt disrespected even though they've owned the state in recent times? I have a feeling that's how most of the Sooners feel. Yes, Oklahoma State is going to try and impress the voters to position themselves for a NC berth, but strange things happen when you press, and don't allow the game to come to you. I can totally see that happening.

VPI: And it won't be closer than two possessions. I understand why some want to make the comparisons to 2005. This is a different team with a different attitude, and unlike that '05 squad, this group has that sour taste of 23-3 still in their mouths. And based upon what I've heard, the leadership down in Clemson seems more concerned about the non-rivalry with Sakerlina (YOU KNOW WHAT, HE'S RIGHT. THEY AIN'T BAMA, THEY AIN'T LSU, AND THEY'RE CERTAINLY NOT CLEMSON.) than the immediate task at hand. I have no reservations about the focus of our coaches, or our players. It'll show on the field.

Ok, thats over with, onto picks:

Ohio: Defense wins championships and shitty MAC games. Enjoy this MACHed Potato Bowl.
Southern Miss: They beat UVa and that's good enough for me.
LSU: hahahahaahahahahhahaaha No. Arky tried a 14 point lead then they got comfortable. They cover.
MSU: points. thats all.
Okie St: I love underdogs. I love their fire. They will drop 14+ on OU. OU is ALL THE PRETENDER.
VT: Tomorrow I will be wearing my lucky long sleeve shirt that we've gone seven straight with and I brought to C'ville for the 38-0 drubbing. We were embarrassed at home but when i saw the game in Lane, in the cold drizzle, I knew change was brewing. I know since then only laying three points on them would be laughable. 35-17 VT. COUNT IT!

Still surprised #

To be honest I was really surprised he fielded that question from the reporter- really makes him look like he is still focused on the SC game. Usually I would say it's a 'coaching ploy'/head-game but he seemed genuinely upset about the comments. Actually I kind of gained some respect for him because he was willing to defend his university and avoided the infamous 'coach speak'; however, he picked the wrong time to do it- that's why you have the offseason or bowl preparation Dabo: now you look like a sore loser who is not even focused on the ACC Championship Game. He said he was but his facial expressions and emotional tone didn't show that to me.

Ooooo Hi Oooooo - Are there really no better games than this to pick from?
Houston - All though I don't want Boise to back its way into a BCS bowl, I always root for the lower ranked team... force of habit
LSU Would love to have two teams in the Nat'l Championship that can't win there conference. It would just exemplify the nonsense that I love about College Football.
MSU - I'm a fan of Russel Wilson as long as we don't have to play him and they are ranked behind us.
Ok State - Its always fun to move up in the rankings even if we can't get to #2!
Clemson - The Hokies are going to put the nail in the coffin of Clemson's once breakout season.

Seattle Hokie Week 14 Picks #

Well we have come to the end of the road for the Pick 6. Such a sad and happy time right now. The end of the season brings me the blues but the fact that VT is playing tomorrow really cheers me up. Well that and the booze. If it was UVPledge v/s FClemson I doubt there would be much happiness in this heart of mine. Alas, there is no reason to worry about that now, just enjoy the last of the season and gear up for another SEC/National championship game some time in February. On to the picks.

Northern Ohio - I checked the Pick6 for this week on Thursday to see if there was a Thursday game and not seeing one, decided to make my normal booze induced Friday night picks. As I struggle to get to .500, this is just the start I need.

Houston - I thought Tulsa had the best shot of beating Houston this year and that didn't happen. Their D is better than it hasn't been I really think this is their year for the national championship or at least a shot at it, or maybe not even a shot at it but a BcS bowl none the less.

LSU - I am stealing this from the Solid Verbal, LSU and and everything. No matter what the spread this team will cover. I am rooting for some chaos though and would love to see the upset. I fear we are about to spend the next 8 months or so hearing about the SEC all the time. Well that and Duke and UNC basketball.

Wisky - They lost in the first meeting so I think they have to win in this one. Also they are the better team and nothing says championship football like a half empty stadium in Indianapolis. Russell and Montee will roll over MSU.

Oklahoma - I have gone back and forth on this game but the more it seems like this is OSUs year, I have to go with Oklahoma. Big Game Bob is good on the road and although they have a lot of injuries, I think they win this game.

FClemson - Clemson is a wounded animal. Unlike last week, everyone is picking the Hokies this week. The reason the adjective or noun Clemsoning exists is b/c they win when they are not supposed to and lose when they are expected to win. I am afraid this will be a Clemsoning in the way we don't want it. They were good once so they have it in them. We have improved but we can still lay an egg now and then.

These final picks were brought to you by my favorite holiday beer, Jolly Roger Christmas Ale by Maritime Pacific. Yo-Ho-Ho. Here's to another great season, great beer and FClemson. Go Hokies.
