Six Pick: Week 13
I told you the madness would come, but even I didn't realize it would be this damn crazy. It's not done with, either. Two weeks of big games among good, but flawed teams, means more late nights and ever changing BCS game scenarios. I had a dozen legit games to choose from before narrowing down to these 6. My apologies to Notre Dame at Stanford, FSU at Florida, Clemson at South Carolina and others, it was impossible to get them all in.

Sadly #beercontrolfather has a busy week, as I am sure the rest of you do too. The time crunch kept this week's Six Pick brief, but I love this week. It's not because of the short work week, or the turkey, it's because of college football. It's not just any ole week, either it's rivalry or hate week. These games are the most intense between the teams, fans and coaches. Get the meat sweats, drink hard from the bottle and most importantly soak in the passion, the energy and all the HATE. Here's to hoping college football has saved it's the best for last.

3 Arkansas at 1 LSU -12 --Battle for the Golden Boot-- 2:30 pm CBS

If the CFB gods want to wrap this regular season up in a nice tidy bow, LSU wins this game and heads to the ATL next week to beat UGA in the SECCG. However, if chaos is the path, like in 2007, Arkansas wins and they throw the shit into the BCS fan. Unlike 2007, Arkansas has a bigger role than just playing potential spoiler to LSU. Win and the Razorbacks potentially form a 3-way SEC West tie with Bama and LSU. The highest ranked team in the BCS would win the division ... only those who want to see the world burn are for this. Naturally, I am for this.
Pick and Rationale: Arkansas getting the points, but losing. I just have a feeling this game will be close. I am well aware the Razorback defense is soft and their quarterback Tyler Wilson takes a beating. However I think Petrino will expose the Honey Badger in pass coverage and the Bayou Bengal offense will grind it out and be pedestrian.
Saturday, November 26th
13 Georgia -6 at 23 Georgia Tech --Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate-- noon ESPN
Nerds versus Thwgs. Unlike in Virginia, the engineering school is considered the academic superior to the liberal arts university. Also unlike here in the Commonwealth, the liberal arts school dominates the football series. Paul Johnson made it a point, that winning this rivalry game was very important. I believed him, up until the day he hired algroh. These fan bases don't care for each, I recommend following as many of them on Twitter as possible.
Pick and Rationale: GT getting points, losing very close. The dawgs have a good defense, but let's see how disciplined they are stopping the triple option. I do not like GT's secondary and I think that will be their downfall versus a very good passer in Aaron Murray.
***
Ohio State at 15 Michigan -8 --The Game-- noon ABC

This is the top interstate rivalry in college football. For seven years Michigan has lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Former coach Jim Tressel first owned Lloyd Carr and then DickRod, but suddenly the tables have turned in quite an amazing fashion. Michigan is now the strong favorite. Brady Hoke commands the Wolverines and you get the sense he'd cut his mom with a rusty shank if it meant a victory over the Buckeyes. Michigan just fleeced Nebraska and now they look to take seven years of frustration out on a team that might have quit on their interim head coach. The celebration that will happen in Ann Arbor if this happens could be epic and worthy of the law to step in. We can all hope.
Pick and Rationale: Michigan, beating the doors off the Ohio State University. This pick is 100% gut, I have that feeling where the Wolverines are going to play out of their damn minds.
***
2 Alabama -21 at 24 Auburn --Iron Bowl-- 3:30 pm CBS

Seriously, a tramp stamp?
In a perfect Nick Saban world (blemish on the record and over signing scrutiny withstanding) Alabama houses Auburn, LSU wins and plays in the SECCG. That would leave the Tide with the backdoor route to the BCSCG. The problem is Auburn. So many times the favorite in this rivalry has either had to squeak by or lost. Everyone knows how much each side despises the other, so I won't even try to do it justice with words. I recommend watching ESPN's 30 for 30, Roll Tide / War Eagle for a refresher. Until then Roll DAMN Eagle.
Pick and Rationale: Auburn getting points, Bammer winning by a couple of scores. Too much talent, too well coached and Alabama won't need to win by a field goal.
***
19 Penn State at 16 Wisconsin -14.5 3:30 pm ESPN
The winner of this game is the Leaders Division champ and will play Michigan State for the B1G Championship. Kudos to the players on Penn State for regrouping, focusing and taking care of bidness last week against Ohio State. Obviously they overcame the initial pressure of the scandal and the loss of JoePaPa. The Nittany Lions played some of their best football all season. Now they face #ALLRUSSELLALMOSTEVERYTHING and more importantly running back Montee Ball in Madison. Wisconsin has lost to two bad beats this season, but they have the chance to redeem one of them by winning and heading to Indianapolis. The question, is are they looking ahead or focused on the team before them?
Pick and Rationale: Wisconsin laying the points. I think the Badgers get it rolling on Penn State early and don't let up. Two quick scores and the Nittany Lions will fold.
***
5 Virginia Tech - 5 at Virginia --Battle for the Commonwealth-- 3:30 pm (ABC / ESPN2)

I am not going to beat a dead horse. This game is important. School pride, recruiting, publicity and of course the winner gets the ACC Coastal Crown. There is a nervous energy around this game on the Hokie side and a sense of hope and destiny up the the road in C-ville. Sure it was nice when the hoos were the punching bag, but come on admit it, this rivalry is better now that there is more riding on who wins. Some group is going to be crushed. One side is going to be proven overrated, the hoos being ranked at all or our Hokies riding high in the BCS poll. This game isn't for the feint of heart type, expect a physical battle on Saturday.
Pick and Rationale: Virginia getting the points. I think this is a field goal game. I think the Hokies win, but would not be surprised if they lost. The VT talent edge has narrowed on defense and whatever uva lacks with playmakers on O, they make up for with execution and toughness. These are not your algroh's hoos, they will come out hungry and want to end their 7 game skid. VT will have to match intensity, protect the ball and hit on enough big plays to loosen the defense. Logan Thomas is going to have to win this game and add to his growing legend.
Hate Week / Love Beer

This is my second New Belgium Beer of the year, but I couldn't turn down buying a couple of deuce deuces of this limited time only Fresh Hop IPA. If you've never had a fresh hop beer, you are missing out as it shows off a different side to my favorite flower.

I have a gut feeling that we're going to absolutely route the Hoos. Don't know what it is, maybe it's David Wilson's twitter feed today, maybe it's the business-like attitude we've seen from Beamer and Foster early this week, maybe it's the respectful way our players addressed UVA in their media availability today and conversely, the way some Hoo players have been trash talking in the media. Maybe, it's the 2 extra days off, or it could be the sloppy play we saw from the Hoos on Saturday night. It could be the fact that we have a ton of players who've "been there" before while the Hoos have a ton of players who are used to making plans for the holidays at this point in the season...
I can't quite put my finger on it but I have got a feeling that we're going to come out and play our most complete game of the season and dispatch of the hoos with relative ease. Call me crazy but I just have a sense of quite confidence about this game. GO HOKIES!

I may go 6-0 this week picking from the gut. With rivalry games stat sheets are toilet paper. Its 90% mental. I fucking love this week.
Pig Suey -- LSU will keep them honest but they did show vulnerability against Bama's OK offense.
GiT -- First picked Gaw'ja but I can see them playing like they did Clemson and draining the F out of the D.
MissAgain -- Love the tales of this rivalry. The Vest is no longer there to motivate hard in the ink.
Auburn -- Gross. I hate both fucking teams. Just dont think it will be a curb stomp. This bud's for you Harvey!
Wisky -- Please just bury this teams season for them. Its a Bowl Selection Committee's nightmare.
VT -- Ive picked against us. I hate it. I just cant against UVA. In all honesty I think this may come down to one mistake. Im eyeing Nicholson on F'ing up in the secondary.

Lucky 13 #
Ark in points, LSU to win - For some reason, whenever I remember this game, I remember LSU losing or almost losing more often than dominating. LSU is a better team and Les Miles could be keyser soze but again hogs always have LSU's number in this game regardless of the Ark coach. LSU will win, but it will be close.
GT - I really don't think UGA is that good and I think CPJ wants to beat UGA to somewhat vindicate flushing their shot at the ACC title down the toilet. again.
Michigan - I was wrong to pick again denard robinson last week. Just....wrong.
Auburn in points, Tide to win - Bama wants to make up for the several dozen straight losses in this series but I think auburn is talented enough (and saban is arrogant enough) to keep this under the spread.
PSU in points, Wisconsin to win - Despite everything else, PSU hasn't looked that much different since Bradley took over. PSU defense will hold wisconsin from going on a rampage and keep it under the spread, but the badgers will win.
UVA in points, VT to win - everything i'm thinking has already been said on the boards here, on twitter, or by some sports writer. I think UVA has us outmatched in intensity right now and thats why I think they will score first and we could walk into halftime down. However, I think by the end of the 4th, we will come out with a W, even though it be by a field goal or less. Plus I'm expecting some questionable officiating, a lot of yelling at my plasma tv, and maybe even a play that belongs in a benny hill skit (will have yakity sax queued up just in case).
Big week #
Arkansas, might actually have a shot this year

Michigan - I HATE it when people say THE Ohio State, are there 2?!
Auburn should be able to cover that huge spread
Penn St barely keeps it close enough

Arkansas to at least cover, though I'm hoping they win for BCS Chaos
GiT - Then the Dawgs win the SEC for absolute BCS Chaos
Michigan - As they always win when I pick against them
Auburn covers - No way there is more than 30 points scored in this game; See Bama - LSU
Wisconsin - No Sweater vest, and Russell Wilson is insane (except when playing the Hokies)
Uva covers, but HOKIES WIN! (which I always do)
if #
Arkansas wins LSU will still be ranked #1... we want Ark to lose & fall behind us in BCS
www.twitter.com/VTColtTXRangers
my picks #
UVA may be better coached than UNC right now but they're less talented on defense for sure. If VT can run the ball well in the 1st quarter, I don't look for this to be that close. I think they'll beat the spread anyhow .. VT by 10 or more, depending on how well our defense plays.
LSU in a close one
Michigan in a not-so-close game -- I hate that THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY SHIT TOO
Wisconsin in a blowout
Georgia -- their defense this season is stout -- triple offense won't be much to stop enough
WAR DAMN EAGLE -- This game is anyone's guess -- I think the tide will roll but don't think they have a prayer to cover the spread -- but I'm definitely pulling for Auburn -- I fucking hate Saban

Got to stop the 1-5's #
LSU - LSU's front will sack Wilson minimum 3 times, Claiborne has at least one pick
GT to cover - Tough to prepare for option in a week. Plus they are really concerned about next weekend anyway
Michigan - If last week is any indication, these teams headed in opposite directions
Auburn - Not sure Bama can score 21 against a team with moderate rush defense
Penn State to cover - they have come this far despite controversy, don't expect them to give up now
Virginia Tech - I see the Hokies winning by a touchdown, but not much more. Somebody picks off Rocco to seal the deal

Dammit, I keep going 4-2. Why is it so hard to get to .500? I may have to give this up, well at least when I die, or a few years after. The short week is wonderful, and I am still in a glow from seeing the Hokies win live last week. That was the first time in the last 5 years i have seen that. Hopefully I am on a winning streak and I will go to all the remaining games and keep that streak going. Sadly I will be 2000+ miles away for UVA. It was a great time at the UNC game, I finally got to meet out fearless leader after sending him on a wild goose chase around McBride and Slusher. I also got to try some hoppy, IPA, porter type crap courtesy of VTjawo and shared a little bourbon with ZacHAttach7. I wish I could have met and had drinks with more of you. My game experience was a little out of the norm as me and 3 other highly intoxicate old men got a ride in a golf cart down the causeway after we entered. We then went to a box at the South End Zone. It was nice since it was cold, the drinks were free and there was tons of food but the atmosphere was not the same. But a win is a win, no matter if freezing your ass off in the stands or getting a foot rub and back massage while eating cheetos and sipping on a can of Ultra Light. On to the picks.
LSU - BCO wants chaos, Merika wants chaos and I want chaos. Problem is we rarely get what we want. Just remember every game matters, as long as it is in the SEC and between two teams that could actually play in the national championship. Tyler Wilson take more hits that Tina took from Ike and he keeps going. LSU will test this for sure. Although Arkansas has been playing better each week, I think LSU will cover and win, helped by a frenzied Baton Rouge crowd.
UGA - I still hate GiT and Paul Johnson. I really can't think of anything else to say except #AvengeNesbitt
tOSU - It is Michigan's year, so they will lose. That's what rivalry games are all about. It appears that Urban Myer is healthy as a newborn and ready to take the helm of tOSU. I think the Buckeyes will play extra hard to send Luke Fickel out on a good note. I am going against my #1 rule of going picking the cheerleader picture team but I can't get to .500 w/out breaking a couple rules.
Alabama - Revenge will be on Alabama's mind and amazingly enough, they are in a better position than and no loss LSU team. Yes, this BcS system is the only way to truly crown a champion, make every game matter and keep the integrity of the bowls (which means VT loses millions each time it goes to a BCS bowl). Word is Cecil Newton has 17K on Alabama and far be it from me to go against him.
Wisconsin - The players on Penn St are a good story but I think it comes to an end as Russell Wilson and Montee Ball should be able to score on PSU. B1G action, catch it.
UVA - I haven't picked the Hokies all year and I won't start now. The way I see it, UVA has to win at some point. This might as well be the year. The only thing that makes me think we will win is that every podcast I listened to this week says UVA will win. Either all those guys are really smart or Logan Thomas will run and thow all over them.
Beer of the week is a trio of holiday beers. I finished off some Deshutes Brewery Jubelale and have moved on to Pyramid Snow Cap Winter Warmer and will finish the week off with my favorite holiday beer, Maritime Brewery Jolly Rogers Christmas Ale. Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Drinking and Go Hokies.

I am subscribing to the following scenario for VT to make the Nat'l Championship:
1. LSU beats Arkanslaw eliminating the hogs from the race
2. The War Eagle takes out Bama
3. Okrahoma beats Okey State to clear the way for us to move up to #2
Although I don't think we have a Nat'l Championship caliber team, it sure would be fun to have a nothing to lose shot in a one game duel with LSU. With all that said, here are my the teams that I will be rooting against this week:
Are-kan-saw - I'll be rooting for LSU to take out #3, but it sure would be crazy if the Tigers were to lose
The Dawgs - It would be great for the ACC to get some wins over a few mediocre SEC teams this week!
Meeechigan - This is probably Michigan's only chance to be tOSU
Stupid Red Tide/Elephant - Have you noticed that Auburn and Alabama have like 4 mascots. Maybe the more mascots you have the better the voters like you?
PSU - I don't really care who wins this one, so I'll pull for the fighting Russel Wilsons
BoooVA - To be clear, I pick the teams that I want to lose so that I don't jinx our beloved Hokies. I feel very confident that our boys will handle their business and retain the Commonwealth Cup by way more points than 5 pts!
@TheTurkeyTavern
FUCK UVFUCKINGA #
Arkansas (to cover)
Georgia (to give PJ hardcore DERPface)
Michigan (to be carried by Denard)
Auburn (to cover)
Wisconsin (to take advantage of PSU's implosion)
Hokies - ANYONE WHO PICKS OTHERWISE IS A GODDAMN COMMUNIST AND I WILL BE HAPPY TO ESCORT YOU OUT OF THE GREAT COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA. (even though I live in Maryland)
NO TWEEDY, IT'S WHIP!!!!!!!
Picks #
LSU - Tyler Wilson is the best quarterback in the SEC, and his weapons are back and loaded on offense but I don't think they're winning or covering. I feel better about this pick knowing BCO picked the opposite.
Georgia - The Paul Johnson fad looks like it's going out of style.
Ohio State - Both teams have had highs and lows, although Michigan has been more consistent in 2011. However, it's a one game season and I think Ohio State will be able to do enough to make it close.
War Damn Eagle - 21 POINTS!?
Penn State - Lions cover the score, but not the play of the mediocre B1G. We have to get PSU-MSU this year right? It's a rivalry...
Fightin' Gobblers - Hokies win by ten on the road behind a smothering defensive effort and LT3 converting third downs.

1) I haven't gone back and audited my score through the year, so it could be a bigger lead (or smaller but we'll ignore that possibility).
2) I was just crapping on your R-Kansas pick, because you've had misplaced face these last couple of seasons. Though, I'll definitely pick them to squash whatever B1G they play.
