Report: UNC-Wilmington Guard Adam Smith Transfers To Virginia Tech

The report is from the notoriously reliable senior basketball writer Jeff Goodman.

According to Brian Mull, who covers UNC-Wilmington for the StarNews, Smith ended up at Tech because of his connection with new assistant coach Mark Byington. Byington recruited Smith while at the College of Charleston.

As a freshman, Smith performed well against ACC competition.

Smith played great in both games the Seahawks played against ACC opponents this past season. Against the Maryland Terrapins on Nov. 13, Smith scored 23 points and shot five-for-nine from three-point range against the Terrapins. Against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Dec. 21, Smith scored 32 points on seven-of-twelve shooting from beyond the three-point line.

He averaged 30 minutes of playing time, and 13.7 points a game. He shot a paltry 150/396 (37.9%) on the season, but was 58/175 (33.1%) from downtown. #ALLOFTHETHREES

If he can develop into a more consistent scorer he could be a nice addition to the squad. I like that James Johnson was able to bring in another body, even if he has to sit a year, after we learned Montrezl Harrell would be transferring. What do you guys think?

We have needed a pure jump shooter for a long time. He is small which might hurt on the defensive side a little. Steph Curry was small though not that I am saying he is Steph Curry, but glad the mindset is changing. Greenberg loved the midsized athletes who lack shooting, so I think this is a step in the right direction.

Depends on the offense we run

I don't think he would be a good fit at all in Greenberg's system but it's hard to say what we'll see moving forward. I think offensive philosophy/system is the biggest question mark heading into Coach Johnson's tenure anyway.
