The Hokies' oppenent on this short week (THANKX WEAVER) are the Governors of Austin Peay State University. For those asking, "Peay" is pronouced with a long 'e.' This has led the student body to adopt one of the more grandiose cheers in intercollegiate sports.

Last season the Governors played two FBS opponents, losing by a combined score of 99-16. Why is this significant? Memphis - widely regarded as the worse team in college footbal in 2011, was one of those two teams. Could this perhaps be the signs of bigger things to come for APSU?

The Governors are currently riding a three-game losing streak. There last victory came against Central State (Wilberforce, Ohio) in early November of last year, an impressive 40-0 win. Unfortunately, it was the lowest attended home game for the Governors all season.

Cheerleading and football are almost inseperable and DID YOU KNOW that the Governor cheerleading squad placed fifth at this year's National Cheerleaders Association Division I championships in Florida? In fact, this may have been the first time the Governor himself - who bears a striking resemblence to Colonel Sanders - laid eyes upon the deep blue sea.

Don't forget to wear white to the game for the Herma's Reader fundraiser! We've even got special helmets!!!!!! I'm always excited for new uniforms, how 'bout the rest of y'all?

Go Hokies!

A little history, Austin Peay's sports program reached their greatest heights when Leonard Hamilton managed to get New York City playground legend Fly Williams academically eligible (despite flunking out of high school) in the early 70's. Averaging 29 points a game over 2 years, Williams lead Austin Peay to back to back NCAA tournaments, making the 2nd round each time.
Fly's robust scoring lead to the legendary student chant,
"FLY IS OPEN, LET'S GO PEAY!"
I am totally not kidding.
Williams later played in the ABA, and then returned to his streetball roots, once scoring 100 points in an IS8 Streetball League game in 1978.
Those helmets are still ugly as sin
Two of my friends played soccer for APSU. They told me that for awhile, in addition to the "Let's Go Peay" cheer, there was a "show your Peayness" cheer. I think an off-campus bookstore sold a shirt with it printed on the front as well.
When they play Morehead State, is the chant "Show your Peayness, Get Morehead?"
So what you're saying is...
that Peay can say "Our cheerleaders are better than yours!"?
Rickey Hill
will shank a bitch for suggesting that. Austin Peay got 5th... out of 5. Hokies took 4th (out of 7) in another division.
Speaking of Rickey
I think Monday was the first time in 5 years I've seen him wear one of our school colors. Even better that it was the appropriate color for the effect game. The closest he has gotten before was a purple shirt. For the coach of the Spirit Squads, he has the least spirit of them all
There's a reason for that
He needs to be easily visible for the cheerleaders to find across the field. He usually wears one of his own shirts but didn't want to ruin anything in the rain.
Oh he's visible
With the colors that man wears...he stands out like a sore thumb. Personally, I'm not a Rickey fan based upon his interactions with good friends of mine so I find it easier to mock him than rationalize his fashion decisions.
I've seen this mascot before...
(ignore the sash)
They're going to be fired up.
Regarding fans at the uva spring game
The Maryland home opener might have actually has less fans at it...

That's too bad
I heard it was a real barn burner.
I heard
Bill was giving the turtles the business until Mary called him home.
They suck so bad. Hard to believe a University with THAT much talent in high school around it can be THAT bad. It's worse than the Notre Dum phenomenon!!!
I was there
It was my first ever non-VT college game. I have friends playing for both teams and my little brother is a freshman at UM. The atmosphere for the whole day was just sad. I feel so bad for him that he won't experience Saturdays in college the way they are meant to be enjoyed.
He will
next year when the turtles visit Lane...
