Logan Thomas Career Highlights

The NFL Draft is only a couple weeks away, so I wanted to take a look back at Logan Thomas' career at Virginia Tech. Let's face it, he WAS the offense for a good portion of the time he was in maroon and orange. His flashes of brilliance and combination of size, speed, and arm strength kept the scouts drooling and the fans polarized. Here's a collection of his best plays. Let's all wish him luck, wherever he ends up.

It's really too bad he didn't play more TE.

#TEU

Damn, that's a lot of offense. Oh, and Danny Coale is still open.

#Hokies

And I don't care what the ref said, it was a touchdown.

I've told many people I want that to be on my grave.

Along those lines, I want my headstone to say, "Danny Coale caught that football."

Virginia Tech would walk right up to you and punch you in the neck. They're just tougher. Cowherd 3:16

Aren't headstones just head sized rocks that Danny Coale uses as practice footballs?

Sam Rogers eats headstones for breakfast...

VHokie

The Michigan fans at the game around me agreed it was a touchdown. Only game I have been to where both sides felt disappointed at the end of the game. They knew they really hadn't won it, but the ref's handed it to them.

I Danny Coaled some beers before watching this video.

At 10 in the morning?! I take it you are just pregaming for Saturday at 2?

might actually be tearing up a little. well done, as usual.

remember that time we set off the richter scale jumping to "enter, sandman"?

Somehow this makes me miss Danny Coale most of all. Not to take anything away from Logan, but man Danny could play football.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I was thinking the same. But Danny is basically a practice squad guy in the League, and Boykin is a third-string receiver. Dyrell Roberts and Marcus Davis may play someday, or they may not. I mean, the "great supporting cast" that made LT3 look like an NFL quarterback was not exactly Calvin Johnson or Bebe Thomas or even Zach Ebron. He really looked great when he had better-than-mediocre help.

Edited to add: Danny caught that ball!

Danny is a practice squad guy because he's been battling injuries since he was drafted. If he can stay healthy he may shed that label.

Boykin is a #3 receiver, which is a bit different than "third-string." For what it's worth, the last #3 guy in GB led the NFL in TD receptions 2 years ago.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

To add to your sentiment, our #3 guy who led the league in TD receptions 2 years ago just bolted to be the #1 guy on another team. Being #3 in GB is damn impressive. I want my #11 jersey...

Carry Me Back

You're forgetting about David Wilson... actually having a running game makes everything better

And also, Coale & Boykin are miles ahead Byrn, Stanford and Demitri "Luis Mendoza" Knowles

Luiz Mendoza reference explained (I hope this catches on):

That's sorta my point, if you'll excuse the exaggeration: they were much better than our 2013 crop, but LT3 still deserves a lot of credit.

Did you just make a manchild of Zach Efron and Eric Ebron?

“These people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

Yes. Yes, I did.

I was thinking the same thing. I just wish we could grant Danny eligibility forever...

It is going to be weird not seeing him at the QB spot this year. Love that kid and can't wait

A fitting tribute to a hardworking Hokie. Great stuff, as always, Dozer.

A lot of passes to Boykin there.
One of the greatest was stepping in after Tyrod came out for one play 3rd and 16. That's a prepared backup.

@CaptKirkVT10

Recently, a sportwriter concluded that " Logan Thomas is more pro-ready than when Cam Newton was the number 1 draft pick in 2011". Hopefully NFL scouts agree.

I don't think I agree with that, as a Hokie and Panther fan.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I'd love to see it happen, but this is the same Cam Newton that won a National Title with Auburn in one year and then broke all the records for a rookie QB. It's tough to make that comparison. I do see a lot of similarities between them though: Size, Athleticism, Carry a team offensively, both miss high and leave you scratching your head at times. I do like that Logan never shuts down when we are losing though. I hope he has a better NFL career than Newton even if he beats the Panthers twice per year.

Awesome video as always. There was one clip that I wish you had used. It had to be the epitome of how every defender felt about playing against LT3. That clip was of the Georgia Tech defender hitting him in the head, because he couldn't tackle him.

#thingsiblamethemvsfor

Aziz can do anything he wants, and still gets an upvote.

My students are all sitting quietly working, and I just watched through that entire video, while rewatching many of the highlights multiple times. And I don't feel bad about it.

That was glorious. I feel like his every pass or run from the 38-35 Miami game could've made a highlight reel, as well. That remains the only time I've witnessed an athlete perform flawlessly live, and I will always love Logan for that game, let alone the rest of his career.

Oh, and for laying out Myles Jack, that was pretty sweet as well.

That was AWESOME! Thanks for putting it together- just imagine if Logan had more of a supporting cast what his last couple years may have been.

Lots of NFL throws all over that highlight. Granted, it's a highlight, but Logan had live freakin' arm.

Also, man, Logan sold out his body to get a first down over and over and over again.

Logan, you will be missed. Go kill it in the NFL. Hopefully you come see us all again in Blacksburg soon.

Terrific video... the was a great ambassador for the university and had one HELL of an arm... and a boom-lowering shoulder, too ;-)

Anyone want to guess over/under on the length of a second highlight video showing only plays where he hit receivers in the hands and they dropped it?

I'm apparently one of about three Hokies on the planet who likes the BC rivalry.

With all of the verbal shots LT has taken over the years, you almost forget all of the things he did right. We're going to miss him this coming season.

Thanks for the video - well worth watching!

And that he never fired back negatively at any and all of those shots at him. And there were a ton of them. Great QB, Great Person. He will probably reflect VT in a positive light wherever he gets to go even when a lot of fans wouldn't do the same for him.

"Have you ever tried simply turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?"

There's no doubt that LT3 would've been a number 1 draft pick had he declared for the draft after his sophomore year.

My thoughts:
-Wow and that's why boykin is a WR1/2 in the NFL.
- if Marcus Davis had tried 80% he would have been a freak of nature.
- I miss Danny Coale..... a lot
- Here's to hoping our recruiting class has a gem at the WR position
- Lets go beat the buckeyes at the shoe with Juiiiiicccccceeeee and Motley's Crue

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

LT could really strech the field. Chucking it 60 yards was almost routine for him.

No doubt he would have beeen a fantastic TE, but if he can hone the mental and mechanical aspects of his craft, he has the potential to be one of the best QBs playing the game. I don't believe Loefler was being hyperbolic when he said as much.

Great video. I'm going to miss LT3 and realize why I still miss Coale and Boykin.

"Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism." Kenny Powers

I think my favorite thing about LT is how he consistently took a massive shit on UVA and Miami.

Any VT QB that goes undefeated against UVA is a college Hall of Famer in my book.

So, every QB for the last 10 years, at least?

Sean Glennon is a Hall-of-Famer? Better make that bar a little bit higher.

This high enough? Dang!!

More GT and UVA than Miami. They at least got 1 win against him.

true, but UVA doesn't have the pedigree of Miami...neither does GT really. And without looking, if I had to guess, I'd say that statistically LT3 played a lot better against Miami than the others. His 23/25 game stands out. That 3rdand16 when Taylor had to leave the field for a play. The only offensive drubbing we put on a team all season last year (granted, there was a lot of running in that game)....all of that came against Miami.

"I like to hit a home run early" ~ Whit "knows how to create a Buzz" Babcock

Just a rough game as a team in 2012 when he went something like 17-26 with 2 INTs, although he did have over 120 yards rushing including that one 70+ yard run he broke.

then I started watching all the great plays he made and stopped thinking about those not-so-good ones. :)

Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Whitley, Hosley, Fuller, Exum

on another note, I am seeing in mock drafts that Kyle Fuller to Browns at 26 is a lock as long as he is there. I have sources... credible ones at that.

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I really want the 9ers to take him at 29 :(

I wanted him a pick ahead of that in Carolina. WR and OL needs be damned.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Credible sources from the Browns, or the mock drafters? I have a tough time believing an NFL team would leak any info about the draft to anyone.

I use to work for the browns and still have tight ties in the scouting department.. It obviously depends on what happens before and what they do with the 4th pick but signs are pointing that way. He has been there 4 times and the most recent one was last week.

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

Gotcha, I just didn't want "sources" to be hearing it from a friend of a beat writer who heard it from an unpaid intern and so on. As a Ravens fan, I just don't want to see a Haden and Fuller secondary twice a year...

and all signs are that they need another lockdown DB and fuller fits that for sure. I would love it myself. Then I get to go catch a couple games for sure

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

There's a reason why I have an LT3 jersey that I will continue to wear for a long time. He busted his butt every single game for 3 years and last year it was evident how the team rallied around him.

Couldn't be prouder to support him and his future endeavors in the NFL. Godspeed, LT3.

In Beamer & Co. We Trust #Livefor32 #DecadeofDominance

All things considered....this is pretty damn impressive.

The guy got moved from TE to QB. He no where near had the kind of talent around him in his 2nd and 3rd year as he did his 1st. He went through a OC coaching change his final season. He was throwing to different receivers every year he started. The whole offense was on his back his final two seasons with him running and/or throwing almost every play.

All that said. Good job Logan. I was one of many who did cursed at you at times during games, but you did well overall and we were lucky to have you.

Good luck in the NFL, represent Hokie Nation well.

The only thing I have say is.......DAMN, we are blessed ! Not only do we have our Hokies, we have fans like Dozer. Both are absolute FREAKS. By "Freaks" I mean individuals completely dedicated to excellence in all that they do. The little things are BIG things and all of the details matter. French and Joe are examples of this as well. All of these mavricks are there own men (and women) - but in all they do, they seek to further the greatness of the collective. The collective known as Hokie Nation. I would just like to take the opportunity to thank Dozer for his videos (which I wait for and rewatch endlessly) - French, Joe, and all of the VT faithful that make our community so great. It is truly an OASIS in a world full of challenges and negitivity. To see this program, its supporters, and all of the good that comes out of it - is truly humbling - and uplifting at the same time. So I say, "Cheers to you Hokie Nation, Long Life, and Much Joy!."

2. Theatre productions at VT are actually really good
3. Cookies 'n cream pie from Owens is delicious
4. Whit Babcock is really good at his job
5. Billdozer makes awesome videos (Seriously dude, call up the athletics department. Please.)

I think the thing that still amazes me the most about Logan is that even when his mechanics/footwork are lousy at times, he comes out and throws a 20 yard pass on a string, or a 50+ yard bomb and it looks like he's not even trying.

He'll get his chance at QB in the NFL, talent like that doesn't grow on trees. Or show up in many human beings.

Also, watching him do those effortless-looking 50+ yard passes makes the nonathletic me sob silently inside.

#thingsiblamethemvsfor

Yeah just watching his mechanics and footwork on that reel is fascinating. You really never see him fully step into a throw and drive it through his front foot. Every throw he looks to be leaning backwards or sideways, with his stance in varying degrees of open-ness, and he still manages to launch a 60 yard bomb on target.

Maybe one time in practice he did really step into a throw, follow through, and drive it, and the resulting completion crushed a walk-on WR's ribcage and killed him and the team all had to swear a blood oath to cover it up and it got real weird and now he's mentally blocked from driving the ball and he replays the scene in his mind every time he tries and that's why he kept throwing INTs and the ghost of that walkon will to appear to Logan in a dream this summer and tell him that it was just that his pads were on wrong and it will set him free and he will win Rookie of the Year.

Sometimes I wonder how LT3 would've done with the same talent level around him on offense he had his sophomore year combined with the better coaching he had as a senior.

I think Logan Thomas could go to a great situation and come out looking great in a couple of years. I imagine that to be a place like Arizona would be great. Even if he went to a place like the Falcons for a few years to understudy under a great QB. Patriots would be awesome as well since Mallet is a free agent next year.

My goodness. There's no denying he could throw a BEAUTIFUL ball.

Couple things:

1) Totally agree LT3 is Animal Champion. The way he ran through Jack and then carried half of the defense for another 10 yards is nothing short of awesome.
2) I hope he gets in a good situation at the next level. I think he can be a great QB with the right coaching and system
3) Did we sign a contract to only wear orange pants when we play Duke?

Awesome video. My takes:
1. Logan is a freak - amazing athlete
2. 3.5 minutes (44%) is running highlights - These 3.5 minutes highlight his athleticism. However, you don't see any super athletic QB moves (i.e. scramble in the pocket to make a remarkable throw downfield. Think the TT pass against Stanford in Orange Bowl)
3. I only saw a few catches by Coale and Boykin that Logan was inaccurate on in which they bailed him out. I actually felt like Marcus Davis bailed out Logan more in these highlights than the other 2 combined. So, I don't know how good Logan's passing percentage will be with NFL-level receivers around him, but I just don't see it dramatically improving.
4. This video confirms that Logan is one of my favorite Hokies of all time. I really want him to succeed on the next level (I think he will, if he keeps an open mind...).

You realize the list of quarterbacks in college football in the past five years who could pull off the "TT pass against Stanford" is really, really, really short? I'm thinking Johnny Football, maybe one or two others...Ray lewis said that Tyrod right now is the best overall athlete playing for the Ravens. Kid was a SPECIAL athlete.

Kid is a SPECIAL athlete.

ftfy

"I like to hit a home run early" ~ Whit "knows how to create a Buzz" Babcock

You make an excellent point. The TT pass was amazing and the list is short. My purpose of using that highlight as an example was 2-fold. 1) An extreme example of avoiding the rush and making a great pass downfield. 2) Every TKPer will know that highlight and can visualize. But my point remains, Logan struggles with making athletic quarterback plays. What am I calling athletic QB plays? Anything that involves avoiding the pass rush, moving in any direction, keeping your eyes down field, and completing an accurate throw.

I could show a Blake Bortles youtube highlight and find at least 10 examples of athletic QB plays. However, he's not near the athlete Logan is. This is one of the reasons Bortles is so highly regarded in the draft. You can say the same thing about Bridgewater and Manziel.

hmm - I saw quite a few 40+ yard throws, on the money, that got there quicker than Mike London can call a timeout. I'll also remind you that he tossed a 60 mph throw at the combine. All the scouts agree on his amazing potential and his ability to make throws not many other people can. The big question is whether or not he can eliminate those head scratcher throws ....

I saw quite a few 40+ yard throws, on the money, that got there quicker than Mike London can call a timeout.

/dead

"And loud, listen for yourself..." - Ron Franklin

As for #3, no, there weren't a lot of "bail-out" moments. However, much more importantly, they were exactly where Logan expected them to be exactly when he expected them to be there, and when the ball hit their hands, it stayed there. That couldn't be said about the vast majority of the receivers we had this year.

This is true. A lot of Coale's and Boykin's skill set involved route-running and and finding the open spot in the zone or positioning your body in man coverage. This does increase your QB's completion percentage. I guess we'll never really know how high Logan's passing percentage could have reached during his VT tenure.

Awesome highlight reel! How about the TD pass that he caught against Wake....?

Also, BillDozer - somehow you need to get paid for stuff this awesome...

Hokies.

I live in Lynchburg, Va. and as we all know Logan Thomas is a Lynchburg man. I have a weird hobby, it is called Frisbee Golf. I play at a park in Lynchburg called Peaks View Park. Yesterday (Monday) I was about to play a round and guess who I saw playing on hole 17? Mr. Logan Thomas. For some reason it made me so happy to see a guy playing frisbee golf in his hometown with a bunch of friends a few weeks before he becomes a millionaire. Although Hokie fans may have berated Logan over the last few years, he is the type of guy that makes me proud to be a Hokie and will always be a point of reference as to why I love this school/team as much as I do. Goodluck buddy, I hope to see you trucking Defensive Tackles and chucking bomb passes for years to come.

Did you happen to see his drive? Was it like a bomb to Danny Coale?

VT '10 #AllMaroonEverything

I would be stoked if I saw Logan at Peaks View... and I'd bet his drive from the 1st hole could hit downtown. Some fellow Hokies and I were playing there on Monday too. I've always admired Logan, for what he did for our team week in and week out, for his leadership last year, and he makes me proud to be a Hokie as well.

"Virginia Tech: Our trees have more school spirit than your students."

I didn't see his drive...I saw his first putt though, which was a little high of the "target" (get it? get it?). But, it was really cool, I imagine he can probably bomb it to pretty much any hole there if he wants to. I would be amazed if he could put his drive within 25 feet of the basket on #2 at Falling Creek in Bedford though.
