Virginia Tech Head Coach Frank Beamer announced redshirt junior Texas Tech transfer Michael Brewer will be the team's starting quarterback next Saturday against William & Mary. Brewer and redshirt senior Mark Leal have been locked in a heated quarterback competition this August.
After Friday's scrimmage, offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler emphasized the importance of both QBs to be ready to play.
"Regardless of who we name, it doesn't matter which way we go, they're both going to be needed," Scot Loeffler said. "It's a very physical league. It's a league where you're only a snap away. The luxury that Virginia Tech has had over the last three years with Logan [Thomas] is that he's 6-foot-6, 255 pounds, and that's not our luxury this year. Regardless of which direction we go, they're both going to be very, very important to the success of our football team."
In two intrasquad scrimmages closed to the public, Brewer tossed 3 total touchdowns.
Mark Leal will serve as the backup. Brenden Motley who finished spring ball as the No. 1 quarterback, but has been slowed by a back injury this August, will be the third option.
"I'm extremely honored to be labeled the starter at a program like Virginia Tech," Brewer said in a release. "I'm very thankful for my teammates and the coaching staff for entrusting me and giving me this opportunity. I'm looking forward to this season."
