'Hey Jealousy' > 'Follow You Down' any day.
Yeah, I don't necessarily disagree, but technically, 'Hey Jealousy' was released in '89 so it didn't make the cut.
You can argue that it's a 90s song, though. It was re-recorded in 1992 and was a hit single in 1993.
That's a good point. Either way, I feel like both songs are worth mentioning. I'm a big fan of both.
Also, killer Three Amigos tag line.
TLC- Waterfalls
Jazzy Jeff- Summertime
Sir Mix A Lot- Baby Got Back
Hanson- Mmmbop (no comments people, you know it's a guilty pleasure)
Britney- Hit Me Baby One More Time
Guns N Roses- November Rain
DMB- Ants Marching
Pearl Jam- Jeremy
No Ace of Base?
Sure, it was late 90s, but I'm a little upset there's no Blink-182 either.
If I kept going, I would have been typing all day. This was just a kickstarter.
Turkey leg for Bro Hymn.
Also, I suggest adding this.
Nevermind... I'm an idiot - that was the date of the music video.
Still, I prefer 311's Down if you're talkin about 90s anthems
On a side note, there will never be a band with a name as cool as the Butthole Surfers ever again
I listened to there "piohgd" album a lot at VT. They had one song called "Lonesome Bulldog" that was a folksy little ditty about Ted Kennedy and Chappaquiddick. There are four versions of this song on the album. Each version gets more and more processed and distorted as the album goes on.
I got it at the Record Exchange. Anybody remember that place, it used to be next to The Cellar. That place was awesome. Ask them for anything, no matter how obscure, and it would show up in about a week and they didn't charge extra. You just got this little pink postcard in the mail telling you it was there. Keep in mind that this was in the early to mid 90's. I didn't really listen to the radio so my tastes were a bit obscure. I listened to mostly Industrial, Metal, and Punk at the time so this place was perfect for me to get whatever I wanted. They also had listening stations where you could listen to whatever you wanted before you bought it. I discovered a ton of great music this way that I would have never picked-up otherwise. They also bought and sold used CDs and tapes (I said this was in the early to mid 90s). I loved that place. I just looked at Google Maps and it looks like its location was taken over by The Cellar. I guess it was inevitable, since record stores have gone the way of the dinosaurs.
The Record Exchange was awesome. I can't even attempt to figure out how many hours I wasted looking through the used CD bins. You also got those sampler CDs when you bought something. Crossroads was also across the street when I was there (where Moe's is now). Great time to be a music junkie.
I forgot about those samplers. I discovered a ton of cool stuff through those. We also had 120 minutes on MTV at the time to expose us to what was probably not on the radio. Great time to be a music junkie indeed.
Record Exchange was easily my favorite store in Blacksburg. I wonder how many of those used CDs I thumbed through.
Crossroads eventually moved to Price's Fork, next to Gumby's before it closed down.
And Gumby's is closed too.
This thread is making me sad...
Some days I really miss Gumby's...and the Pokey sticks!
False
Propaghandi
Bush - Machine Head
Bush was my first concert. +1
was it in richmond?
There was one in Roanoke in the early 90's that a bunch of Hokies went to. Hokies like me!
It was in Roanoke. My mom took me. Lmao I love her
If it was 1995 (maybe early 96) I was there in Roanoke. No Doubt opened and they stopped playing because someone threw something that hit Gwen Stefani.
I know that TECHNICALLY it was in 2000, but really Californication is a 90's song....and it's probably one of my favorites of all time
Californication the album came out in 1999, so it does indeed count!
STP...DMB?
STP - Plush
Goo Goo Dolls - Slide
Marcy's Playground - Sex and Candy
Sublime - What I Got
You nailed most of my 90's favorites but Jesse's Girl by Rick Springfield (even though it's super poppy) is one of my mine.
Saying Rick Pringfiled is a 90s song is like putting an Elvis tune on an 80s mix tape!
Ok, and now for additions

The Verve Pipe - Freshmen
Brian Setzer Orchestra - Jump Jive & Wail

ooh - good call on No Rain
Nailed it with Hypnotize
Next- Too Close
Genuwine- Pony (Ride It)
Ah yes, The Black Album. Metallica's last album before they stopped recording.
As important as Enter Sandman is, I think they should have stopped after ...And Justice for All. That way we could have possibly ended up using For Whom the Bell Tolls as entrance music.
(ducks)
Oh man.... you made me hover above the downvote button.... Badmouthing Enter Sandman like that.
I wasn't really badmouthing Enter Sandman, I just think the Black Album is when Metallica stopped being Metallica. I said on another thread on here a while ago that I pretend that they retired after ...And Justice For All, but came out of retirement because they had one more good song left in them and released Enter Sandman. That's just my opinion. Thanks for your downvote discretion.
I was really into earlier Metallica back in the day before they started using Enter Sandman as entrance music, so this influences my opinion. (Master of Puppets is pretty much the perfect thrash metal album.) It is a pretty good song, but I would hazard to guess that at least 90% of our love for it has to do with Lane Stadium, not the actual song itself. There are so many awesome Metallica songs from the pre-Black Album era that are better than Enter Sandman and whatever they decided to use as entrance music would still be just as popular with Hokies.
It's all Bob Rock's fault.
Ewww... I just listened to For Whom the Bell Tolls and I would not want that as our entrance music. I don't know if it's because for some reason I have the live version on my phone for some reason, but it's way too orchestratey and doesn't really have the bass. The best part of Enter Sandman is the buildup which isn't really there in For Whom the Bell Tolls.
Have you seen the movie Zombieland? They play it over the opening credits and it is one of the best opening credit sequences I have ever seen. It just sounds evil. Add in the bell and it would be perfect for a stadium entrance.
I do not know which live version you listened to, but if it does not have Cliff Burton playing the opening fuzzed-out wah pedal bass part, than you are not listening to a proper version of the song.
Give it away - red hot chili peppers!!!!
Hey man nice shot - filter
Hand that feeds - nine inch nails
Self esteem - the offspring
Wonderful - everclear
Mysterious ways - U2 (I wanted to use beautiful day but that came out in 2000)
What I got - sublime
I'm sure there's a lot more I've missed but those are some bigguns I could think of growing up to hearing
Also forgot "One Week" - Barenaked Ladies.
On a side note, Summer Hits of the 90's is a great Pandora station.
I jumped out of a chair like you threw a hand grenade at me.
I saw Sugar Ray with Smash Mouth and Gin Blossoms, ect at Wolf Trap last year in what was essentially a 90's concert. And I'll tell you Sugar Ray put on a heck of a show McGrath engaged with the audience and played the stuff you wanted to hear. A lot better than I was expecting.
I can second that saw them 2 years ago, sugar ray karyokee was the best
What about all of that glorious 90s Hip Hop? My submission: "Big Poppa" by The Notorious B.I.G. (released 1994)
Warren G Ft. Nate Dogg- Regulate
Outkast- Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik
Warren G is on the street, trying to consume.
Big Poppa and Regulate go together like Reebok Pumps and acid washed jeans...with elastic ankles.
damn you for making me thinking about my stupid Reebok Pumps...
Seriously. You could make an entire thread of just Wu-Tang Clan related songs.
Accurate. Same with Tribe and Busta Rhymes.
Blues Traveler-Hook
The Offspring-The Kids Aren't Right
Spin doctors-Two Princes
Ah you beat me to it, Blues Traveler rarely get the recognition they deserve these days.
Seriously..you could put that cd in and hit play..and walk away...
ALL of these songs are so much better than what we hear on the radio now. Pop music
just sucks IMO.
Aw c'mon you can't go wrong with da Biebs, Gomez, Lovato, Shakira and Beyonc [sarcastica]
Haha everything is wrong with them....LOL
AAAAHHHH! NO!
Actually not so much. It's probably about the same garbage to good ratio as all the previous decades. There was lots of commercialized one hit wonder crap in the 90's, 80's, 70's, etc. After a decade only the good stuff stays in everyone's mind giving rise to the popular theme that current music sucks.
For every current equivalent of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Kryptonite" there are 5 modern versions of "Crank That" and "All the Single Ladies" meant to make lots of money and fall by the wayside in 3 months. However the pool might be slightly more diluted due to how easy it is to pump beats through a speaker than get 4 people to play instruments together.
Disagree vehemently yet politely. But then...
This is likely the case. Plus, the songs that are garbage seem to get requested much more frequently now than back in our day, which probably skews our perceptions.
The difference between today and yesteryear is Autotune.
This is undoubtedly the all-time greatest genre of music.
I love all the songs on the list and will add a couple of artists. There are too many good song options to even number:
Beck - Where it's at
Hootie and the Blowfish - Hold my hand
Dave Matthews Band - So much to say
2pac - California love
Presidents of the USA - Peaches
And how can a room full of Hokie Fans forget Enter Sandman? Alum07 gets a wing for that.
Weird Al Yankovich-Smells Like Nirvana, He's Gump, Don't Go Makin Phony Calls, Amish Paradise
FAT
Dr. Dre featuring Eminem - Forgot about Dre
Bush - Glycerine
Third Eye Blind - Slow Motion
Eminem - Stan
Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight
Ace of Base - Don't Turn Around
Mark Morrison - Return of the Mack (If I had a theme song this would be it)
Bone Thugs - Crossroads
Coolio - Gangsta's Paradise
Tupac - I ain't Mad at Cha
Biggie - Big Poppa
Matchbox 20 - 3AM
Pres of the USA - Lump
Shaggy - Boombastic
Oasis - Wonderwall
Cranberries - Linger
Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
Proclaimers - I'm gonna be (500 miles)
Counting Crows - Mr Jones
RHCP - Under the Bridge
Two home runs there.
Also "No Diggity" by Blackstreet has a place at the table.
I thought only wahoos, preps and pretentious kids wearing Ralph Lauren only listened to DMB.
Actually I started listening to them before they became "cool" to listen to. Still have all of my old
recordings of them.
Since their first popular (second actual) album was Remember Two Things which had a stereogram (remember those) of someone giving a peace sign as an album cover and a song called Trippin' Billies, DMB was pretty popular with the neo-hippy contingent that was rather omni-present during my time at Tech. This was before Phish got popular to distract them.
I would have to say their earlier albums were so much better than recent yrs. Was not happy
about Dave picking up the electric guitar. However they still sound AMAZING in concert.
Push and 3am MB20
Additions:
(These arent favorites, because most of them were already captured, but additions that I should be on a 90s soundtrack without repeating names)
Puff Daddy - Victory
Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike
REM - Whats the Frequency Kenneth
Limp Bizkit - Faith
Quad City DJs - Space Jam
Cherry Poppin Daddies - Zoot Suit Riot
**Quick Anecdote: I just had a discussion with a buddy of mine over the weekend about how ridiculous it was that a band received serious airplay with a name like the Cherry Poppin Daddies. I am by no means politically correct, but holy hell...
Ill keep thinking of more. Thanks for killing my productivity for the rest of the day, French.
Since several of you thought that this thread was my full list, it was just a conversation kick starter. HERE WE GO.
Marc Cohen- Walking in Memphis
Wreckx-N-Effect- Rumpshaker
G. Love and the Special Sauce-I-76
Stone Temple Pilots-Vasoline
Everclear-I Will Buy You a New Life
Flaming Lips-Jelly
The Wallflowers-Three Marlenas

Cypress Hill- Insane in the Brain
I could do a compendium of Soundgarden and Oasis songs. Two of my favorite bands.
Ditto on Oasis.
Top Five Oasis (1990's) songs:
1. Supersonic
2. Cigarettes & Alcohol
3. Morning Glory
4. Live Forever
5. Rock n' Roll Star.
Champagne supernova?! Besides live forever should be a tad higher and hello is incredibly underrated too
My top ten
1) Rock and Roll Star
2) Live Forever
3) Wonderwall
4) Don't Look Back in Anger
5) Morning Glory
6) Acquiesce
7) Shakermaker
8) Champagne Supernova
9) Talk Tonight
10) Supersonic
I might throw in "Sad Song" or "Whatever" for "Shakermaker," but other than that, pretty much spot on.
don't make me pick 10 seeing oasis live was one of the most satisfying days of my life. So happy I saw them before they split... now that they've split though I must say I'm pretty happy with both of their individual efforts NGHB are really good and beady eye have been MUCH better than I thought they'd be
For the top 10 are we only doing 90s oasis? I always loved dya know what I mean
Gotta keep Lyla too! ohohoh and while were on the topic Sunday morning call is pretty awesome too the masterplan and of course all around the world
I have seen Oasis five times live. Met Noel and hung out with the lead singer of Cornershop during the 98 tour in Pittsburgh. Met Fran Healy (lead singer for Travis) when they opened for Oasis in Columbus during the 2000 tour.
With the exception of their last show at Merriweather Post (outdoor venues are terrible) it was always a stellar show.
Don't sleep on Don't Go Away. Great track even though Be Here Now was a lousy album.
French you to me have just ascended to a greatness that is unprecedented. Seriously they are my all time favorite and Noels TCT version of don't go away is beautiful. Oh what I would do to meet noel Gallagher!!!! I saw them at the patriot center at George mason during their last tour.
And to be quite honestly I actually kinda like be here now, its nothing compared to definitely maybe, morning glory, or don't believe the truth but I think its better through and through than standing on the shoulder of giants and dig out your soul. Have you ever listened to some of their B-sides? How some of those didn't make their CDs ill never know. One thing that really disappointed me however with noel's solo CD was the lack of new material. I had I think 3 out of 10 of those songs before the cd even came out. I wanna live in a dream with my record machine was a B-sides released with stop the clocks, stop the clocks was the other B-sides with that one, and noel had performed everybody's on the run live prior to oasis even splitting...gah sorry I'm ranting but its nice to talk oasis every once in a while
I have caught them 3 times at Patriot Center (and come to think of it, six total. Pittsburgh in 98, Columbus in 2000, and the Merriweather Post disaster... Ringo's kid was terrible.)
My Oasis show was the 98 gig at Patriot Center. I am not sure if this is the same performance (Noel is dressed the same as he is in the bootleg I saw of the show I attended) but here is Noel I think performing Don't Go Away as part of the acoustic set on the 98 tour.
im telling you man if you havent gotten the chance just youtube noel gallagher TCT. (teen cancer trust) he put on an incredible acoustic show with like a full choir and orchestra its really good. and ringo's kid was bad for you guys? he put on a really good show for us at the patriot center and i gotta admit the shock of lightnings drum solo was pretty sweet on the CD. man i wish i was a little older and could've seen them when they were HUGE
He did a great job in 08 at the Patriot Center, but he was sloppier than Heidi Fleiss at Merriweather. It ruined the show.
Well damn that sucks. I fell in love with him after that concert and I know they wanted him full-time ashame he didn't leave the shame impression on you guys
Was "Let it Out" post-90s for Oasis?
Yep. Standing on the Shoulders of Giants was part of the 2000 tour.
Top 5:
1. Don't Look Back In Anger
2. Morning Glory
3. Fade Away (from Masterplan)
4. Live Forever
5. Don't Go Away
How about Blessed Union of Souls - Oh Virginia?
I see like 1 or 2 songs, but what no country? *ducks
Not for me in the 90's. Basically the only country music I heard was at high school dances.
Deanna Carter-Strawberry Wine
George Strait-Carried Away
Now, I love the bluegrass/roots music revival going on now. There is nothing better than cruising down to the OBX listening Old Crow play Caroline with the Mrs. in tow.
My father worked at WMZQ in the late 80s and early 90s so i have alot of country influence. But i listen to everything from Warren G to Oasis to George Strait, etc, etc if its 90s its all good
Fortune smiles upon you today [ducks]
The Ernies-Here and Now (any of you that played Tony Hawk Pro Skater on PS1 know why)
The Fugees- Killing Me Softly
Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity
Sponge-Plowed
Henry Rollins-Liar
Jimmies Chickenshack-Do Right
Oh gosh, Tony Hawk Prop Skater for PS1...why did I play that so much?
Although this was more what came on when I played:
EDIT: I also want to say the PS1 had some FANTASTIC games.
Oh god, if you're gonna go with Tony Hawk, May I submit the following from THPS2
RATM - Guerrilla Radio
Anthrax & Public Enemy - Bring the Noise
Powerman 5000 - When Worlds Collide
Bad Religion - You
It's "Brang Tha Noize"
How did I miss Anthrax and Public Enemy? One of my all time favorites.
I wasn't a fan of their musics, but when I was promoting shows in Tennessee we had Powerman 5000 come through. They were one of the nicest bands I ever dealt with. Good guys.
Sponge and Henry Rollins...classics!
Needs some Alanis Morissette. I was a very dark 8 year old.
I was waiting on her to pop up. Now I am going to have nightmares where my high school head coach asked us who Alanis was while we were running 5ths (300 yard sprints at the end of practice)
What do you mean "was"? J/m
Funny story...my parents bought me Jagged Little Pill when it first came out.
I let them listen it and they heard one specific line and took the CD away me.
I did eventually get it back. Great album. She was pretty bitter. LOL
OMC-How Bizzare (one of the better one hit wonders from the decade)
I Bit His Ear (Mike Tyson parody)
One hit wonders made me think of Candlebox - Far Behind
They were actually two hit wonders - "You" was also really good
I saw Candlebox in Downtown Norfolk, they were awesome. There were quite a few good songs on that CD.
Didn't New Kids on the Block have a bunch of hits?
Who?
I'm just going to sit back and listen. Well done.
Oh, and this:
Sixpence None the Richer-Kiss Me
John Williams-Jurassic Park Main Theme
You'll be sure to fall asleep with one of those.
Oh, we're doing movie themes now?
Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On
Actually, that should probably be the trump card for the whole decade.
Foo Fighters - Big Me
Stone Temple Pilots - Interstate Love Song
Dishwalla - Counting Blue Cars
Filter - Take a Picture
Edit to include:
Notorious B.I.G. - Juicy
U2 - Achtung Baby (the entire album)
Pearl Jam - Vs. (the entire album)
From some of these artists I had a hard time picking one song. So here we go...
Outkast - SpottieOttieDopaliscious
Missy Elliott - The Rain
Puff Daddy and the Family - It's All About the Benjamins (Remix)
Busta Rhymes - What's It Gonna Be?
Master P - Make Em Say Ugh!
Trick Daddy - Shut Up
DMX - Ruff Ryders' Anthem
LL Cool J - 4, 3, 2, 1
Redman - Let's Get Dirty
Boyz II Men - On Bended Knee
Alicia Keys - Fallin'
Aaliyah - Are You That Somebody?
Mary J. Blige - Not Gon' Cry
Michael Jackson - Remember The Time
Dru Hill - Beauty
Tyrese - Lately
Raphael Saadiq - Be Here
Offspring - Pretty Fly for a White Guy
Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood
Nice call on DMX. My son wrote & performed the music on two cuts on DMX's latest release. Sadly, the release did not do well, but hell yeah, I'm proud!
I tried to start a Jock Jams station on Pandora, but it kept wanting to veer into the 80s over and over again. I mean, not that it was necessarily a BAD thing, but it just wasn't the intention.
Naughty By Nature-OPP or Hip Hop Hooray
Dj Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince- Summertime
I just spent my diff. eq. class either downloading / listening to most of these songs that everyone has mentioned!
You're welcome.
Now get back to work, slacker!
Pro-Tip: You can never listen to enough Soundgarden
BadMotorFinger is the perfect album for cutting grass. You won't even hear the mower.
Yes and yes.
BadMotorFinger has been on my work out rotation since it came out.
Listening to Outshined while lifting weights is a powerful motivator.
Legs all around for Soundgarden love!
Amen to this. Soundgarden and STP.
Including Weird Al?
"Rump Shaker" Wreckx-N-Effect
"Humpty Dance" Digital Underground
Here goes:
Semisonic-Closing Time
All of RHCP's Blood Sugar Sex Magik album
Biggie-Party & Bullshit
Every album Ween made in the 90s but especially The Mollusk--talk about some grassfed, free range, acid-fueled music.
Counting Crows-Angels of the Silences
Everclear-Santa Monica
Smashing Pumpkins-Bullet with Butterfly Wings
And then Rooster by Alice in Chains like 75 times.
Aerosmith - Crazy
Aerosmith - Cryin'
--> both for the music videos alone
Oh, right: The Black Crowes' Shake Your Money Maker album.
I was waiting on the Black Crows to make an appearance.
The BIGGEST omission so far:
Sneaker Pimps - Six Underground
But also:
Wu Tang Clan: Triumph and C.R.E.A.M.
eels: Novicaine for the Soul
Martina McBride: Independence Day
Seven Mary Three: Over Your Shoulder
Summercamp: Drawer
Overall, awesome list so far.
Another huge omission, 2 Skinnee J's "Mindtrick"
Yes! I had forgotten about 2 Skinnee J's. I seem to recall preferring Riot Nrrrd, but you have to respect Mindtrick for paving the way for MC Chris and the Nerdcore scene.
My little brother's band opened for the J's at TOTs in either 2002 or 2003. I think it was 03.
Awesome. I was in the burg then but I don't recall ever hearing about that show. Weird.
Soundgarden
STP
Nirvana
Bush - Glycerine
Blur - Song 2
Blind Melon - No Rain

others...
good enough for now

Anything by Primus
I saw Southern Culture On The Skids at the Cellar in the late 80s.
Once we get outside on the one song requirement, things really open up
All Soundgarden, Oasis, Alice in Chains, Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine etc.

Alice In Chains - Would?
Body Count - Body Count

another angle:

swingin utters: fairy tales and fruitless fortunes, smokestack dreams
social distortion: when she begins, story of my life
wu tang: cream

the slackers: no more crying, married girl
nirvana: penny royal tea, all apologies
method man: bring the pain, tical
the 90s were my shit. i could go on and on, my whole life used to be music and going to shows and new bands but then i moved to blacksburg and realized i could like music and sports and the rest is history.
Ah, memories of the Avail concert at Waterstreet Gallery...
i consider them the best band that ever walked the face of the earth, the live shows were beyond intense. their singer, tim barry, is doing some really cool folksy/country type stuff now. you should check it out.
"Things of the Past" was on the iPod earlier today. And, Tim Barry's song "On and On" is one of my favorite covers that Frank Turner performs.
dude. . . french
sagacity gone might be my favorite song period. i might request wait at milano to played at my funeral
Always a turkey leg For Frank Turner, he's one of my favorites.
And we are definitely going to hell. But we'll have all the best stories to tell.
Whether you got tired of the song or not, Smells Like Teen Spirit set the tone for the 90s. In 1991/2 that song was EVERYWHERE in Blacksburg.
how has no-one mentioned:
Beck - Loser
The Beastie Boys - Sabotage
how did i forget the beasties? i remember watching this video as a 13/14 year old and thinking these were the coolest human beings in the history of cool human beings.
Check Your Head had to come out for people to appreciate how incredible and ahead of it's time Paul's Boutique was.
RIP MCA.
Did I miss any Rage Against the Machine up there? Bulls on Parade any one?
Chili Peppers-Suck my kiss?
And one just under the wire: Judith by Perfect Circle?
Great choices all.
I didn't think Mer De Noms came out until the spring of 2000
Correct, but I was hoping to sneak it in.
Great picks by the way.
Montell Jordan - This is how we do it
When I first read "Ultimate 90's play list" I was thinking of this:
There's not a single 'Eer fan that will EVER forget this game...ever.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIfAVBvIJY8&list=PLF10EAF48BECBE0BC&featu... uhhhhh guys were forgetting THE BEST song of the 90s
Needs more Third Eye Blind.
Also Montell Jordan: This Is How We Do It, and Ini Kamoze: Here Comes the Hotstepper
What no Craig Mack? Flava' In Ya Ear?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDqq3ndNUWY
how the hell do I embed video btw?
Dinosaur Jr. - Feel the Pain
Better Than Ezra - Good
Nine Inch Nails - Get Down, Make Love
Soundgarden -
OutshinedJesus Christ PosePantera - Cowboys from Hell
Faith No More - Epic
Sublime - Same in the End
Pennywise - Bro Hymn
Bad Religion - A Walk
NOFX - Linoleum
Blink 182 - Wendy Clear
No Doubt - Sunday Morning
Reverend Horton Heat - Big Sky
Primus - On the Tweek Again
Clutch - The Soapmakers
Morphine - French Fries with Pepper (can't go wrong with anything by them though)
Edit: My last minute change from Outshined to Jesus Christ Pose apparently didn't make it's way from my brain to keyboard.
If anybody here prefers to listen to albums over singles, I'd recommend Rhapsody or Google Play. More expensive than Pandora, but I love finding deep tracks (which my list should make obvious).
Also, I wanted to shout out GWAR. Dave Brockie, aka Oderus Urungus, passed away on Sunday. RIP
SUNDAY MORNING! Great call, how'd I forget that one?
Everyone always brings up Outshined, but Jesus Christ Pose is my favorite song on that album. Nice to see it get some love.
No Radiohead?
I had Fake Plastic Trees, but Karma Police, Paranoid Android, and Creep are all classics.
Fake Plastic Trees is just a fantastic album start to finish.
A lot that I had have been listed, but let's see...
Lou Bega - Mambo No. 5
Chumbawamba - Tubthumping
Two points for Lou Bega, and any other retro swing, mambo, funk or other fad that used brass. We don't have enough brass instruments in today's music.
Don't have enough instruments in today's music period.
Needs more DMX
or Rough Ryders Anthem
Apologies if any of these have already been listed, BUT
Friends in Low Places - Garth Brooks
Reckless - Alabama
Welcome to Paradise - Green Day
Smooth - Santana/Rob Thomas
Smooth was in/after 2000.
What about....
Let Me Clear My Throat (remix?) - DJ Kool ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qG9ZWUitFik )
This thread is what finally convinced me to register for TKP by the way. I need to start a Pandora station with most of these suggestions ASAP!
Anyone mention any Weezer?? Heard Buddy Holly on my way to work this morning.
Sweater Song was on my list.
I admittedly haven't read the entire thread but hopefully someone added Santeria by Sublime.
Yup
There are two that I don't think I've seen yet:
Spin Doctors - Two Princes
The Refreshments - Banditos
Also, you should just include the entire Empire Records soundtrack.
Banditos is an awesome song.
Without that song, would everybody know that the world is full of stupid people?
Roger Clyne still comes through DC at least once a year. Nada, Mekong, Mexico, Banditos, Americano, Counterclockwise, and many more... all great songs.
www.azpeacemakers.com
House of Pain- Jump Around?
California Love - 2Pac
Nuthin' But a G Thang - Dr. Dre
Who Am I (What's My Name)? - Snoop Dogg
Jay-Z: Can I Get A
Just an FYI for all you Alice In Chains fans...they will be in Roanoke in May.
Wait a sec-wasn't Here Comes The Rooster in the 80s?
Another great AiC song released in the 90's on the Last Action Hero Sountrack was "What the Hell Have I" which has what could possibly be my favorite AiC guitar lick. It wasn't included on Dirt, but it should have been.
Shaggy "Boombastic"
To be a true player you need to know how to play
Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hell
Ok I may have missed it, but I'll be that guy:
Limp Bizkit...don't act like you didn't have their album
Also Live - Throwing Copper
Edit: How did I forget Korn??
I loved Live-Secret Samadhi
Live is still on my playlists to this day. I saw them live at Burruss in the early '00s; they put on a hell of a show.
That's awesome! I've never gotten to see them live. Wonder what they are up to these days.
I didn't have that album. That band was turrible.
Live - Throwing Copper, though, oh yes. I
hadhave that albumTurrible? I think not. (note: turn your speakers down if you are at work....)
Edit: I'm now listening to Limp Bizkit in my office and I'm not ashamed
Turrible. Turned my speakers down to zero and ripped the knob off.
Limp Bizkit and Method Man...N 2 Gether Now was awesome
I thought everyone agreed that the whole Nu-Metal thing never happened?
Limp Bizkit is the Wham! of the 90s. Everyone wants to act like they sucked but you know most of their songs and you secretly liked them.
keep rollin rollin rollin....
Their bis kit isn't the only thing that was limp.
That stuff was just horrible. Like chew my ear off and feed it to a rabid parrot horrible.
Well, just because you liked something in the past doesn't mean you can't recognize that they weren't what you thought later on down the road. I also pretend Machine Head doesn't exist between 1999 and 2003.
If I had an upvote for this I would...no wonder Seether redid Jealous Whisper. Which by the way is awesome.
edit: upvoted
I refused to acknowledge it when it did!
Right Said Fred's "Im Too Sexy ... come on, guys
Along the same lines, Salt N Peppa-Shoop
Jay-Z Big Pimpin. What about Linkin Park?
Allstar by Smash Mouth defined 3rd grade for me. How has that not been listed!?!?!?!?!
3rd grade? Damn I'm old
I know I was thinking the same thing. They had another one, too, right? Walking on the Sun or some ridiculous nonsense like that? That was late high school for me.
Yup I'm pretty sure Walking on the Sun was the name of it. Yeah, it was um...a while out of college for me.
Imagine how much longer this thread would be for 80s and 70s.
Los del Rio - Macarena. Very 90s. In case you forgot it.
Thunderstruck - AC/DC. 1990
Staind - Mudshuvel or Home
Since this is a VT site and I know there are others that were there in the 90s, I'm surprised a few of these haven't been mentioned yet...
Pat McGee - Rebecca, Girl From Athens, Who Stole Her From Heaven
Emmet Swimming - Arlington
Slackjaw - AFH (All Fallen Heroes)
Everything - Hooch
Fighting Gravity - Home
Eddie From Ohio - This My Town
Jennifer on Sunday - Radio Star
And it was mentioned, but...
2 Skinnee Js - I'll go with "Pluto"
Saw these bands many times while at VT. Anybody remember Slackjaw? One of my favorite bands of all times.
I don't think I saw this on anyone else's list...
Screaming Trees - Nearly Lost You
Holy Christ.... How are we to this point in the thread and nobody mentions
Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
that might be THE song of the 90s
Also, I present the following:
Bel Biv Devoe - Poison
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up
LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out
Meredith Brooks - Bitch
Cher - Believe
Seal - Crazy or Kiss From a Rose
Savage Garden - I Knew I Loved You or Truly Madly Deeply
Darude - Sandstorm
Sadly I thought Poison, I Wanna Sex You Up, and Mama Said Knock You Out were all 80s songs.
"Never trust a big butt that smiles"
Surprised no one has mentioned Eve 6. Inside Out was the jam (even if the rest of that album was straight butthole)
Even more surprising is the lack of Eiffel 65's Blue (Da Ba Dee) or Move Your Body.
Yeah, not a lot of electronica type songs on this thread, which is odd since it really blew up in the 90s:
Daft Punk-Around the World or Revolution 909
The Prodigy-Firestarter or Smack my Bitch up
The Chemical Brothers-Block Rockin' Beats or Setting Sun
The Crystal Method-Trip Like I Do or Keep Hope Alive or Comin' Back
Not electronica, but I didn't see these mentioned earlier:
Elastica-Connection
Hum-Stars
Bump and Grind - R Kelly
Fly Like An Eagle - Seal
Gin & Juice - Snoop Dog
Good Vibrations - Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch
Gonna Make You Sweat - C + C Music Factory
Hold My Hand - Hootie and the Blowfish
Oh What A Night - Four Seasons
The Rockafeller Skank and Praise You - Fatboy Slim
Tootsee Roll - 69 Boyz
and my personal favorite
Whoomp! There it is - Tag Team
Sorry if these were already mentioned, I lost track of what has and hasn't been brought up
