In the last 10 meetings with UVA, the Hokies have lost 9 of those games. That span includes a 5 game win streak by the Hoos in Blacksburg.
12/5/10 - UVA 57-54
2/21/12 - #25 UVA 61-59
1/24/13 - UVA 74-58
2/18/14 - #14 UVA 57-53
1/25/15 - #2 UVA 50-47
UVA has been a consistent NCAA tournament team & top 4 team in the ACC for the past few years, while we've been either last or tied for last in the ACC for the past 4 years. But aside from the 2013 game, look at how tight all of these ball games have been. 3 points, 2 points, 4 points, 3 points...It's a classic 'throw out the record' game.
It's both encouraging and discouraging. I was at the 2014 game and I thought we had them, but we didn't. I was at the 2015 game and I thought we had them, but we didn't. If you put UVA's program up against VT's the past few years, UVA's been superior...but when I watch UVA's basketball team and VT's basketball team play on the Cassell Coliseum floor, they always look like equals.
So, I'm not sure what to expect from Monday Night's game. On one hand, it seems unreasonable for me to expect our rebuilding program to beat a top 5 team. I'm sure we'll be a 14 point underdog or something like that, so UVA has a clear edge. On the other hand, we took Duke to OT last year, always play UVA tough at home and our program has taken on a rep as a giant-killer over the past decade. So, why not?

Hopefully we'll have more fans in the venue than UVA does. That game with our cousins was embarassing.
I think with it being a Monday game (9pm at that) this shouldn't be an issue. The WV game was while most people were still taking holiday vacation. I think we will outnumber them, but still not pack it due to the students not being back.
It's a shame students aren't in town for this game.
No, it's a shame the students don't show up when they are in town.
Both of those are a shame.
The two aren't mutually exclusive; you're both right. I was at the WVU game and it sucked, big time. It felt like we were in Morgantown, especially in the last minute when the Mountaineer players were hyping up the crowd. Zero fun sir.
I imagine there will be a pretty large uva contingent at tonight's game but hopefully the home crowd can drown them out and send the hoos back to hooville with an L.
Don't forget that students who don't win the lottery have to pay $10 for a seat, even if Cassell is half empty. Unless they want to pay $70 for five ACC games, that's $14 a game.
Jobless students aren't going to pay that for a bad-to-mediocre team, and many would not pay that for a good team. It shouldn't be so hard to fill up a less than 10,000 seat gym when your student body is more than 25,000, but it's being made harder. BTW, before you argue about revenues, there are plenty of schools where students get in free.
Plenty of schools also have higher student fees than Virginia Tech as well. They get in for free because they've already been charged for admission, or at least their parents have.
Assuming 'tuition' includes an athletic fee, because that is the real determining factor. I found out the hard way.
My first two years, I bought tickets and went to most home games. Then we fired Seth, hired his ex-assistant and students were even less interested in going to mens basketball games. So i decided not to give VT any more money, I didnt even bother with the lottery.. I just showed up before tipoff, got a ticket or got ushered in the side doors because I looked like a 20something student.
My spring semester of senior year, i was a part-time student and working, and mens bball was amidst a last place ACC finish. I only tried to go to one game, UNC, and was denied because I hadn't paid an athletic fee as part of tuition, since I was part-time. I understood, but it was disappointing. I walked back to Center St, day-drank and watched it on TV, we lost anyways.
No regrets though, that part-time semester saved a me a lot of money.
Would be nice to hear a 'JUST LIKE FOOTBALL' chant tomorrow.
This is a long shot, and I'm not sure if this is the spot for this, but does anyone have two tickets to the game tomorrow night? I'm in Blacksburg if that helps at all
I will be there in Cassell tomorrow night wearing my lucky orange hat cheering our boys on.
THIS IS MY CALL TO ALL HOKIES...if you can make the game, and have the money to do so, BUY A TICKET AND GO. This team needs all the support and encouragement it can get, and we should back them just as much as the football team. Be LOUD, be PROUD...THIS IS HOME!!!
Frikkin' Wahoos.
I'll be interested to see how Leday/Blackshear/Hamilton/Henry matchup with Tobey and Gill, who have been on a tear. They made Zach Auguste look like a n00b this past weekend.
If we can win the rebounding margin or at least keep it close, we'll live or die by Seth Allen (Repeat this sentiment for the remaining 16 ACC games).
New poll came out today, UVA is now ranked #4 in the nation.
That just means it'll be even more of an upset!
...right?
