In every game, there are always a handful of key plays that make or break a game, and last night was no different. One play completely reshaped the path of this game.
No.
Not that one.
With 1:43 left in the third quarter, VT faced a 4th and 10 from OKST's 46 yard line, and Fuente sends out our trusty #95 to boot the ball away, which makes sense except for the fact that our punter, Oscar Bradburn, wears #91.
Last night, #95 was apparently worn by walk-on QB Chase Mummau, WHO SPENT THE ENTIRE SEASON WEARING NUMBER 18.
The layers of this subterfuge are incredible. Fuente (or maybe Shibest) had a walk-on QB wear a different number normally reserved for specialists in case we ended up in a situation where we needed to fake a punt, all in the hope of preventing the other team from realizing our "punter" isn't a punter. THEY EVEN CHANGED HIS HOKIESPORTS PROFILE .
Mummau completes a perfect throw to Sheggog (!!) for a first down, and if Kumah had hauled in the TD pass which Jackson put on the money at the end of that drive, this play could've gone down in Hokie History.
We all know what happened instead, but I will not let this play die in obscurity.

What a legend.
Dude meme'd himself into the history books, who here will ever forget this play? This is why I love college football
This is some next level shit. His position is listed as "H" which I can only assume stands for Hero
I legitimately thought it was Bradburn the whole time.
They both remind me of Danny Coale.
I was watching this, thinking Bradburn wears #91 but seeing #95, so my first thought was either Bradburn misplaced his jersey, or hurt himself, and we're getting the backup punter. Right around this time one of the commentators said something about the possibility of a fake. I also don't recall seeing a name on the back of the #95 jersey, so this plan was really well thought-out. Reminds me of something Bill Bellichick would do. We better watch out, if Bellichick hears about this, we might be down a coach or two (Shibest?). Definitely one of the highlights of the game for us, just too bad it didn't make the difference in the outcome of the game.
I'm think the announcers actually said it correctly on the broadcast.
Because Mummau is so much easier to pronounce correctly than Edmunds. π
We really need VTBox to photoshop that gif to have Mummau pulling off Bradburn's face.
This is awesome. His position is not even QB anymore. It is "H". Whether that means "H-Back" or "Holy Crap our punter is faking it, no wait, its our 4th string QB wearing a new number-Back", I am sure this will be a highlight of his career.
Also, isn't it great that we are still inventing the future with our new crappy logo?
'H' is 'Holder'
LOL... that was a great play. When he came out I looked at my wife and said "What happened to Oscar? Did he get hurt? How?"
Lol I did the exact same thing!
Watching that play last night.
Me: That's not Bradburn punting. Who the hell is 95?
Wife: Stares at me quizzically
Me yelling: Holy crap that's Chase Mummau. That was freaking masterful, they had no clue that he wasn't our punter.
Wife, kids, MIL and dogs: Look at me like I have lost my damn mind
Shibest is now 2 for 2 in awesome fake punts in big games.
I love everything about this except it gives me all the feels for my guy jack click.
Click is bigger and doesn't look like a punter, Mammau helped pull the fake by looking like he could have been the backup punter. OKST didn't do their roster homework and the fake worked to perfection.
Did the announcers ever notice that it wasn't Bradburn? BTW, the absolute worse announcers ever last night. Not that it was an important game in the grand scheme of 41 bowl games, but they were the "D" team and the network treated the game as such.
You mean as much as they noticed Tremain "Edwards" making tackles or the "great play call" on a blatantly OBVIOUS pick play.
No..no they didn't.
Credit where credit is due: they most certainly did. At first I thought they made a mistake, because I assumed it was Bradburn, but they got it right. You can hear it in the clip posted by Horse, above.
Fair point. I don't know how much credit to give when someone only announces that a specific player made a play, but to that point she did announce that Chase made the throw. I don't recall much discussion about it not being our Oscar "that's not a punt, this is a punt" Bradburn that made the play, but maybe I was just in shock.
Most frustrating announcer moment: our kicker charges down the field and makes a textbook tackle on the return man at the 23. Pretty cool stuff. Announcers conversation? Their dinner with pecan shavings. WTF?
To be fair, they showed earlier in the game that they had no idea who Joey Slye was and probably thought he was just a linebacker playing ST.
Yeah I liked when they said "Slye puts it through the uprights" after an OSU PAT.
I heard that and thought maybe I didn't hear it correctly
I questioned it in the moment, until the subsequent drive when VT was moving the ball, she talked about getting far enough downfield to get within Ammendola's range. So in that moment I learned that OK State's FG kicker has a max of 53 yards...
To make it worse it was pistachios shavings on sweet potatoes?? WTF kind of food is that? Also how did they switch OKST kicker and Tech kicker around for a good quarter of the game?
Yeah, that pissed me off, too. I mean, the dude is playing in his last game, comes down on the kickoff and makes an awesome, picture-perfect tackle. Those oblivious announcers were definitely lacking, right on par with the officiating of the game.
I felt like ESPN didn't even care who OSU was playing last night. It was all Rudolph this, and Washington that (not that those guys don't deserve the attention) with minimal mention of much anything VT related. Before the opening kickoff there was a highlight bit featuring all the OSU stars, but I never saw one of our guys. Maybe I missed it - WatchESPN is trash anyway. I only saw the OSU cheerleaders, none of ours.
At times, it feels like ESPN really wants Tech to be good and consistently nationally relevant and to compete with top teams in the ACC and the country. And then at other times it seems they couldn't give a rip about the folks from the tiny town in the mountains.
I guess they were trying to make up for all the time they spent hyping Oklahoma while Oklahoma State was warming up for their bowl game.
My favorite comment of the night: "He would have been wide open if they'd completed that pass"...
Nah, they did plenty of drooling over Bud and his defense, as well as talking about how good JJ is as a freshman like a million times. ESPN doesn't have it out against us.
#punterswag
That was an incredible call and it worked to perfection. Too bad the rest of the drive didn't end in as spectacular a fashion. .
ESPN crew was puke worthy.
The entire broadcast was puke worthy. ESPN can never focus on the game they are broadcasting. It's always on the next big game or in last night's case, Sam Darnold and other QBs.
The worse case of this was ESPN hyping the Iron Bowl during the UVA game in 2014. They had the sideline reporter doing a bit about it on camera in the middle of the game.
How hard is it to get Edmunds correct? This is like the 3rd or 4th time this season the broadcasting crew have F'ed it up.
Eh give them a break, it's not like he was a Butkus Award finalist or anything...
And potentially the highest ranked draft prospect in the game...
This is beautiful.
Not gonna lie, my drunken self swore that was our infamous Aussie Punter and my hungover self was a little sad he was not going to be in the qb competition in the spring...
...Nice!!! I didnt even catch that it wasnt Bradburn. Well friggin' played.
I was watching and thought to myself, "Huh, I thought his number was 91". And then when he threw the pass, I freaked going "why is an Aussie throwing the ball? What is he thinking?" And then it was a perfect pass! I was stunned that Bradburn could do it.
It was only when the announcer said it was Chase, that it all clicked.
Yeah, I get more out of the replays sometimes.
This is the stuff of Hokie walk-on legend.
Well done, Sir.
Nice. I remember thinking wait.....isn't the punter 91?
To get even deeper, we could have issued Chase a #91 jersey. Only one player can be on the field at a time if they wear the same number. We've done this before with other players (especially wearing the #4). So as long as Bradburn and Mumau aren't on the field at the same time, it would be a seamless ruse.
I think the limitation applies to players from the same unit, does it not? Regardless of whether they're on the field
OT: Questions about your game gifs, if you don't mind sharing:
-source media? (game film, DVR, YouTube)
-preferred hosting?
-conversion process? (software, website)
I don't mind a redirect to another thread if this has already been covered (or an email). Thanks!

I keep watching this and noticing things each time. Walker is the blocking back. They were in an odd punt formation and OKST still didn't notice, Chase stood in there in the face of that rusher.
And he dropped it on a dime..............hummmmm
I noticed that. His perfect accuracy, while under some duress. Of course anyone can complete one lucky pass, right? /s
Not sure who was out wide on the right but that looks like it was his primary target. He was well covered but Mammau then finds Shegog and drops it in perfectly. Very impressive for a guy that had never taken a snap in college ball.
I feel like people underestimate the experience players can bring in from high school
Naw, I think the dude on the right was the gunner, and it didn't look like he was planning to break stride into a pass pattern, so a throw to the right would have been risky, unless it was one where the gunner suddenly stopped to catch an intentially under-thrown pass. I kinda think it was designed to go to Shegog as he broke out later on a pattern.
Deon Newsome #20 also comes across the line of scrimmage from left to right like he might have been an option too. I assumed the gunner was just to make it look like a punt while drawing OK State players out of the area but you may be right.
I like watching the game on sky cam views
Except KOs and real punts from behind the punter. This play was kinda cool from that perspective (although the alternate camera angle thy had on the replay sucked, but he positioned for a punt return.
I agree. The kickoff coverage from the skycam was deceiving. It looked like so many of the kicks were short and I had trouble getting a feel for what was happening. Wonder what it would have looked like if they placed the camera in the receiving end zone. Kinda like that Auburn field goal return against Alabama a couple of years ago.
Where is Chase Mummau from? Mechanicsville, VA
Who is the only other past Hokie from Mechanicsville, VA? Sam Rogers
Coincidence? I think NOT!
Not the only. In fact, another is on the active roster now.
I wonder if his off-the-field success has gone up?

Fuente/Shibest have some super creative fakes. Loved the fake punt/jump pass from the ACCCG.
In addition to his bio, the depth chart was also updated to show him as 2nd string holder. Not to state the obvious, but by virtue of the fact we listed him as a holder, we definitely had a fake FG play ready. The fake punt was probably the backup trick play we had planned.. otherwise we would have listed him as a punter.
Reading his name this all I can think of....
His profile on Hokiesports is back to #18, BUT REST ASSURED DEAR READERS, at the time of the original post, it was in fact #95.
And just like that he is gone.
I know he was dealing with an injury at the spring game but was hoping he would have more chances to have the spotlight.

the numbers always work. especially when they're punter numbers
