November 17, 2011 ... The Hokies played a great Thursday night game against UNC. It was one of those games where the Hokies seemed in control and then it felt like it was all falling apart ... but the good guys held on for a key win on the way to knocking off Michigan in the Sugar Bowl on a late Danny Coale touchdown. [sigh]

A fun chance to watch Logan, Wilson, Coale and the gang in the midst of a week with too much frustration for Hokie fans.

It was a catch.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

I was at that game.

The refs unfairly stripped it from his fingers after the play.

It was pretty silent as we filed of the stadium. I think that even Michigan fans knew it wasn't right.

Facebook showed me this status from that day:

Come on Hokies! A win tonight gives us our 10th for the season, puts Beamer over Lou Holtz on the all time list, and makes it that much harder for UVA to take the division away from us. Plus, we got Hootie doing the national anthem...

At that point in the season, we had 1 conference loss and UVA had 2. We had just handed GT their 3rd conference loss the week before, which had pretty much knocked them out of contention (one of their other losses was to UVA).

UVA played FSU a couple of days later and beat them, setting us up for a winner-take-all Commonwealth Cup the following week.

id imagine bud smashed a few head sets the last couple of weeks. thanks for the throw back!

Wanna win put boobie in! Let boobie spin coach!

Is Thomas faster than JJ?

Probably. LT had the fastest 40 time for QBs in his draft class.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

This was my last game as a student/MV at tech in lane. I remember sitting in the NEZ after all my bandmates had left reflecting on all the great times I had there as a student. It's not fair how fast it goes by

That team sure did suck last night. They just plain sucked! I've seen teams suck before, but they were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

I marched tuba in 95-96. :) It does fly by.

Horn 94-96. Yes. Yes, it does. Also, how goes it Shaggy? Long time, no see.

I remember this game. It was kind of the best case scenario in my opinion, because it kind of gave us the wake up call we needed before UVA and led to 38-0 bro.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

On this day in 2012:

Virginia Tech football won in overtime at Boston College to get to 5-6 and keep our bowl hopes alive. The next week we would squeak by UVA 17-14 to ensure bowl eligibility. We had lost to Pitt, Cincinnati, UNC, Clemson, Miami, and FSU.

Virginia Tech basketball was coming off a win against VMI to start 3-0. We would eventually get to 7-0 in our best start in years. Then we finished the season 13-19 (4-14 in ACC) and failed to make a postseason tournament of any kind.

I know this has nothing to do with this post but it got me thinking. Just a little reminder that back to back football losses to Miami and GT and a sloppy basketball loss to St Louis is not the end of the world. We've gotten through much worse not all that long ago.

Excellent points. I was thinking about this the other day: we've had bad (by our standards) football seasons in recent years where we won 6-7 games and went to a lower-tier bowl, but we never really had a BAD football season by most people's standards. I'm looking at you, FSU. In those "bad" years, we went to a bowl every single year, beat UVA, and when it was time to pass the torch we had one of the smoothest coaching transitions in the history of college football. I'm going to start counting my Hokie blessings this Thanksgiving.

And like I've said other places...in those 6-6 years where we just barely got to a bowl, we actually won the bowl, so we still had a winning record.

As for the BC game, I was out in Louisville visiting my now wife and somehow found that game on the radio. Having played high school ball with Martin Scales, I screamed when he punched that TD in.

Did you know Jarret Boykin wears XXXL gloves?

Whatever happened to Jayron Hosley?

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Me and my dad went to that one. That was one coldass game.

Ugh - I missed this bit of sad news last year (link). I always appreciated the videos he put out ... I was wondering just this week why I hadn't seen any in a long time.

This game was probably the coldest I've ever been at a football game. The guys in front of me had a fifth of Wild Turkey 101 they snuck into the stadium under one of their coats. The shots they gave me were all that stood between me and hypothermia.

To those guys, wherever you are/whoever you are, thanks.

I would root for the Russians before I would root for Virginia.

Facebook just reminded me of this gem from November 27, 2011:

Damn, Clemson, did you suddenly decide to just start screwing the rest of the ACC two weeks ago? First, you take away our option of two ACC teams in the BCS (which means less money for everyone), and then you just roll over for South Carolina. I was kind of hoping for a top 5 matchup in Charlotte next week.

Clemson came into November with an 8-1 record. They beat Wake Forest, which I think it what clinched the Atlantic for them, and got up to #7 in the BCS, and we were right behind them at #8. The following week they lost to NC State and dropped to #17 while we jumped to #5. And then of course, they lost to USCe in the final weekend, setting up a #5 vs. #20 ACCCG.

It appears that my assumption in mid-November 2011 was that VT and Clemson would both end the regular season at 11-1, with VT getting the revenge in the title game. A 12-1 VT would go to the Orange Bowl, while an 11-2 Clemson would be in prime position to go to another BCS bowl.

Little did I suspect that we would be the second BCS team. Heck, I didn't expect that after losing the ACCCG.

And we got lambasted for getting selected to the Sugar Bowl. The national media then found little pockets of no fans to show folks saying we don't travel well enough to have earned the spot but we showed up better than Florida did the next year.
