Brookland Hokie usually does a nice recap but gotta do a quick summary of what we are looking at recruiting wise now that the dead period is over. It looks like Tech was reaching out to bevy of talented recruits today letting them know they should join the hype train before it leaves the station.

2018 # of committed: 20 (including Darrisaw)
# spots left: 5-6
QB:0
RB: 0-1 (Beck, flip Anthony Grant)
WR: 0
TE: 1 (James Mitchell)
OL: 1 (Walker, Gywn, other OL)
DE: 0-1 (KJ Henry)
DT: 0-1 (Mcneill)
LB: 1-2 (Hollifield, Artis)
DB:0-1 (Gervin)
S: 0

Plays most likely to commit in order from greatest chance to least chance: Beck, Artis, Hollifield, Mitchell, Gervin, KJ, Walker, McNeill, Gwyn

If the 2018 class shakes out to sit around #20 nationally at the end that's a win. 2019 priorities in my mind are RB (D. Ford), OL (D. Wright) and DT (B. Smiley, Ardarious Jones). Potentially CB depending on how the young DB's develop.

I don't know about #20. If we want national perception to increase and our chances at the playoffs to increase we need to sign better classes than #20. As stated in another thread the last few National Champions all had top 5 signing classes leading up to their national championship year.

Not saying we need to jump to that in 2018 but we need to either maintain or improve on the class we signed in 2017 which was around 10-12 I believe. But no worse than 15 if I'm not mistaken.

Of course then comes the discussion of the chicken and the egg but I think Clemson and Swinney have done a prime example of showing that getting the commits will build the championship.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

10-12 lol? I think VT has maybe hit 15 once in its history of something like that? We don't get the recruits to sniff the top 10.

Hate to be a downer, but something major has to change between now and national signing day for us to jump to top 20

Yea I think a few new names would have to pop up or pop back up (which in all fairness happened last year) for that to be any sort of a possibility.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

My order of most to least likely of those who you listed:

Beck
Mitchell
Dax
Gervin
Artis
Walker
McNeil
KJ
Gwyn

No way we end up top 20 IMO.

Ford loves us but it's very early. Smiley will be a hokie, wants to be a DT (which is what we're telling him) but will end up at OT and will be a beast there.

"Vick's so amazing, that unleashing his skills on some poor defense is almost unsportsmanlike. It's not fair."
- Chris Fowler, ESPN analyst

Smiley will be a hokie

will end up at OT and will be a beast there.

These two statements make me very happy.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

Thanks for the update, I know you have a good grip on the Hokie recruiting trail. Any one that I was missing that is an under the radar commit? Also who is Slave?

Under the radar in terms of guys already committed or that we're still going after? Committed guys I love Chamarri, not the fastest player on the field but brings a ton of swagger and will fit in perfectly with dblock. He will take his visits though and Trinity guys are never truly solid until signing day. Also think Goode will be a star here but I feel like people are mostly on board with him.

In terms of targets, there isn't really anyone flying under the radar. Spots are tight enough that we're basically only focusing on the top targets and OL. Will probably see more OL offers go out in the fall/winter because at this point we seem to be whiffing on our big targets and will probably lost Jmac.

Slave = Slade. Bad typo.

So many things working in our favor with Ford right now. I trust the coaching staff to make him and (equally as important w DF) his family our top priority.

(Added bonus: jersey #22 will be free for his freshman year!)

Yeah i agree Chamarri is a guy I'm high on too, think we are in good shape with him and peoples along with floyd, hunter, and deablo.

Yeah wish OL recruiting was strongee and looks like Walker and Gwyn are both long shots. Gotta get at least 1-2 more OL.

And boy do i think Ford could be a game changer. But I still think that we could get to that top 20 if we land guys like Dax, Gervin, Mitchell, and Artis. I also hope Cam Goode can be a good addition becauss DL depth is scary now after watching first two games but we have no more targets besides McNeill on the board and he is less of a long shot now but still a tough get.

Saw on 247 that Artis' mother saw people on the board trashing her son badly enough that

1) She took time to address it on the site

2) Has been part of the reason he has cooled on VT

Y'all remember that despite being behind a computer screen your words cannot be taken back and you should never trash a kid trying to decide what's best for his future. Wanna talk shit about UNC? Go for it.

Eh, that's way blown out of proportion IMO. It definitely pissed her off but at the end of the day I don't think it will make or break his decision. I've just been feeling that he's been trending away for a while now. Skipping visits, social media presence, etc.

Hey man, positivity.

Let's see if his brother rides the pine

I think that is a given until Akers gets hurt.

I don't think I've ever seen this fanbase root so hard for one kid to ride the pine lol. I hope he's successful, unless its against us.

Not rooting against him, just think Akers is better so he will get most of the play time.

Any recruits going to be at the game this weekend?

VT '17

So far, the recruits/commits I have seen that attended are:

2018 DT Commit Cam Goode
2018 OL recruit Josh Jefferson (doesn't have an offer yet, but one may come during the season, he is HS teammates w/Goode)
2018 RB recruit Coleton Beck
2019 TE recruit Nick Gallo
2019 S recruit Nick Cross

I can confirm I ran into Tre Turner there, dapped him up said he would be the next great Hokie receiver.

2018 RB recruit Coleton Beck

You put those words together, those are my favorite words, Popeyes and bahama
- Mike Burnup

So if NC State fails to improve on the field again and Doeren gets a pink slip, what recruits do we stand the best chance to gain a commitment or flip? McNeill, Graves, Gywn? Would Pennix come back into play (I assume that's only a consideration if Beck doesn't accept)?

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Class of '18 news, and it's not the good kind...

Nadir Thompson suffered a season-ending leg injury in this weekend's game. Fractured tibia and partial MCL tear.

Hate it for the kid - here's hoping for a full and speedy recovery.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Yes but coach is sticking with the kid and got some huge points when Nadir shared the text messages Fuente sent him.

Players took notice of that quickly

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Link to the texts?

And any note on which kids took notice?

That's fucking awesome. Not that I lacked any respect for CJF before but so much more now.

PSA: If you want another reason to join the Hokie Club or up your contribution, the chatter about Fuente being the next elite coach is getting louder, and elite coaches get paid more than $3m a year. Someday a bigger team is going to come with a bigger offer and were going to have to pay this man $5-6m a year.

Say what you want about not getting anything in return, but we might lose a coach that will win National Championships one day if we don't pay him like one.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

One way or another Whit will pay the man. He isn't afraid of spending money. This is not to say it wouldn't hurt other parts of the athletic programs but Whit isn't going to let Fuente go without a fight.

No way we can pay a coach 5-6 mil a year + top assistants salary without a major increase in donations

I have a hunch if we make the College Football Playoffs we might see an increase in Donations

Unfortunately it's usually the other way around...

We should all be huge Kevin Sumlin fans.

Fuente isn't going to that dumpster fire. That fan base has way too large of expectations for where they are right now. And having to face Alabama every year? I don't get the feeling that SEC jobs are looked at as the crown jewels any more.

I said this in another thread, but people underestimate the ability to win when it comes to rating jobs. Unless you're old and planning on retiring after one last job it's probably a good idea to stay away from jobs like Texas A&M and Ole Miss right now

Ole Miss, sure. But Texas A&M will likely attract a top flight coach and will pay him like one. They are definitely a concern

This is another reason to stay away from Texas A&M. This is a letter that Sumlin got sent today. His wife posted it to Twitter and there are people on texags.com that are pissed she made it public or are saying that someone around Sumlin faked the letter. There is an above normal amount of crazy in that fan base. Most are good people but there is a REALLY bad segment there.

That's the worst, man.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

I'm not drawing moral equivalence in any way (though both are reprehensible), but this kind of crazy is what has the Baylor fans doing a black out with shirts that honor at Briles, after the rape culture was exposed Art Baylor and Briles was fired for his role in it.

We're looking at a 2-3 million dollar pay increase, 66-100% over his current salary, to a program with more resources and more national spotlight. Winning may be hard, but money, prestige, and recruiting advantages will outweigh that for a lot of people. It's not a slam dunk by any means, by all accounts (unbiased, sourced ones) Fuente very deliberately chose VT early on for our situation and sees us as a perfect match, but you can't rule anything out.

A $3 mil increase, would take 2500 new Hokie club members. We graduate 7,500 students a year. Seems very doable

You know student loans, living by themselves for the first time, getting a first job, and everything being absurdly expensive now are all a thing, right?

Funny but LOLUVA, UNcheat, Clemson and on and on don't seem to have that same excuse.

Find me where 33% of their most recent graduating class donated to their athletic programs and I'll take back what I said.

It doesn't take recent classes. VT has almost 200,000 living Alums, less than 11,000 people total Alums and non give to the Hokie Club that is assuming all donors are Alums (which we aren't) is 5.5 percent do you know how badly that is?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

Yes I do. But that's not what I was talking about when you brought up those schools. It was suggested that 33% of the upcoming graduating class donate. I mentioned that it isn't feasible with the hurdles a new college graduate faces. You brought up the other schools, so I tried and tie it all together.

Hokie Ben didn't say those new members should come from new classes. If we take the last six classes out of the living alum calculations we still see donations less than 10 percent of living Alums. That is a lower percent than almost every school in the ACC and near the bottom for P5 schools.

Seems pretty straight forward to me.

Yes as in past graduates, again look at how many alums don't give over 90 percent. Think about how poor that giving rate is. As for new grads yes many of them have more important expenses but your telling me that not even a few of them can afford 50 a year? Less than 5 dollars a month to join?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

I graduated in 2015. I had about $28,000 in debt from VT alone. My career path hasn't allowed me to pay a cent of that back yet. I am now more than $100,000 in debt. I understand that in order to further my education and do what I want to do later in life i had to take on this debt. I had every intention of giving back when I got the chance and had the disposable income to do so, but now after your incessant whining on a board that I very much enjoy, i have zero wish to give back. I don't blame any new alums for not donating. Even if it was only $5 a month. Gain some perspective before you climb your soap box next time.

Your right what people should do is never talk about the Hokie Club, never bring up what it pays for, how without fullfilling scholarship obligations we are letting kids down. Let's all just hope the money is there to keep our Olympic sports teams around I'm sure that will work out just fine. Yea it's not easy to come up with money but I'm tired of people complaining about lack of this or that but doing jack shit to help out. Yea you can't donate but your telling me someone in your class can't? That less than 6 percent of living Alums can donate? Again LOLUVA, Clemson, NCST None of them have this pushback from donors they all have more totoal donors and the donors they have give more. So you don't donate because you didn't like hearing about it on a sports board that sounds like a great plan.

I've heard about it once, I've heard about it twice, hell I've heard about it three times (all from you). The fact of the matter is VT didn't and doesn't make it a priority to get students and young alumni to give at a low level. Clemson's IPTAY program is a thing of genius. We do not have that. That's a discussion for another day. But on this site and the thing that you continually miss is that A) the regular readers and participants know about the Hokie Club and give what they can/wish to or B) Know about the Hokie Club and have decided that they don't have the means to donate. I would be willing to bet that if we ran a poll of TKP readers that 99.9% know what the Hokie Club is. A similar amount understand that money drives success in college sports. The fact of the matter is that your message is patronizing and unnecessary.

Those same readers know about TKPC and yet we see growth when it gets brought up. It's amazing how hearing about something and the benefits it brings can get people to join. For example people on here didn't know that Tech offers the new grad pricing, didn't know they offered monthly payment option, didn't know that the new giving year ends March 31st. I'm not going to apologize for trying to grow the scholarship fund for Tech, never.

Except you aren't educating with the majority of your posts, you're nagging. If you feel so strongly about educating TKP readers on the Hokie Club you should make a forum post and explain things rather than make an identical post on new threads that, "Everyone should join the Hokie Club or we won't be able to compete."

If he is nagging - by saying you no longer want to give to Hokie Club, aren't you pouting? I mean... it seems super childish to let his posts alter whether you give back whenever you pay off your debt. Just hide his posts and move along.

You also said he is whining about people joining, but aren't you doing the same?

If I did this on every post in topics that it has no bearing to then yeah we may be equal. It's called getting fed up that every single (ok maybe a slight exaggeration) post has to have the same person cooing about the same thing for months on end.

Actually it's been years.

I like a little pressure out there to join HC. I might not have joined if I hadn't read so many comments about it.

They way I view it is, if even one person comes away wanting to join the Hokie Club or TKPC then I don't give a flying fuck if it annoys everyone else who doesn't join. Because odds are most of them weren't going to join anyway and are just complaining to complain. Based on the people on here who have found new answers to questions about these two wonderful Hokie Groups I'm inclined to believe some people have joined after finding out details of the groups.

Everybody chilled the FUCK out

Is It Luck?

Maybe we could focus more on those "Did you know?" kind of things about the Hokie Club instead of reiterating our current contributions? I just joined this year after graduating last year and would love to learn more ins and outs because they don't make joining/donating a very visible process. For example: Did you know that corporate donation matching currently doesn't count towards your points?

Recruit Prosim

I think most people agree donation levels are low, but new graduates shouldn't be the primary means of addressing that issue. Most kids leave college pretty damn broke. Even if they come out earning a good salary (which isn't true for everyone), they're prioritizing paying loans, rent, emergency funds, etc.

You keep harping on number of people. I can tell you, for a fact, some people dropped their Hokie Club membership and started donating with someone else so they could keep their seats. With the new requirements, it just made more sense for them to combine their efforts.

Membership numbers don't really mean anything. The concern is total dollars coming in. Fewer members with a higher $/member still gets the job done.

With the recent drop off in total membership, did the total dollars amount drop?

They haven't released the numbers yet but if we want long term growth the donor numbers have to go up its that simply. To be this far behind what are supposed to be peer institutions is a sad indictment of the Hokie Club, the communication with alums and yes the alums themselves. As for blaming the new per seat donation VT is among the last P5 school to do that and yet those same schools didn't have as much pushback or contraction of membership. So for the millionth time what makes it harder for Hokie grads and fans to donate?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

I've been out for a while. I feel comfy donating old clothes and a few hundred here and there, but definitely not a couple thousand to a school I gave thousands to already. Granted, I'm still in a start up business with two little guys and SAHM, but I'm sure I'm not alone when it comes to forking over large sums of money. I mean, I wish I could, but just not capable.

$100 really does get you everything. It's nice being in a relatively small fanbase

They didn't become a civilian university in the 70s

Recruit Prosim

Even if they can't donate right away, there are right now roughly 7500 alumni who got out of the recent-graduate hole this year and can now afford to donate. Even when you look at the ratio of total living alumni to donors, Tech is low compared to the ACC

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

I do think we'll see a spike in donations once the 2010 generation of hokies reaches like 40 or so. Our fanbase has exploded since 2000 and once they start paying off loans we'll start having more donor money

Totally agree, Hokie Club and donation discussions have a place but not in the recruiting thread. What we really need is some juicy sauces from BAGS or jollyman to keep recruiting trolls like me up to date.

Let's put it this way... as a FR at FSU, Josh Sweat lived (maybe still does?) alone in a brand new 3BR apartment, off campus. He pays rent of course, but at VT, all freshmen have to live on campus.

I'm sorry but that's just idiotic and unnecessary. If that's where the arms race is going I hope the bubble bursts sooner than later.

Hate to break it to you, but we're already there and then some. Yeah I know. I've seen the pictures of the practice facilities for Oregon, Alabama, Texas, and whoever else with the $9000 lockers, waterfalls, laser tag, mini golf, coy ponds, and lord knows what else. It's extravagant to the point of absurdity. I do get that those facilities are essentially a marketing tool for the program though, especially with recruits. A player getting their own 3BR apartment off campus is probably more utilitarian than those facilities since yes, players do need a place to live, but it strikes me as a fairly dumb and extravagantly expensive idea to put an 18 year old student athlete (likely living on their own for the first time) in that situation. I'm not against having reasonable amenities like AC in the dorms, but one of the things that makes college special in my opinion is experiencing a dorm environment and learning that forming a bond with others is more meaningful than luxurious living conditions.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. I won't be surprised if stadium attendance continues to decline nationally if money continues to dictate the direction of collegiate sports and while I do think players are probably the most deserving to benefit from it, it's indicative of some underlying issues that I expect will only become more problematic and significant in coming years.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

A very wise post. Agree completely.

Yea I hear you. I'm not a fan of it either, but it is realistically where college football/recruiting is at these days. And I do completely agree on the 3 br apartment deal vs reasonable amenities. Unfortunately until some of those changes you're talking about materialize, everyone is in the keeping up with the clemsons boat.

Let's be clear here. FSU did not provide Sweat with a 3BR off-campus apartment. He rented that on his own with cost-of-living stipend and his own / family money. All FSU does is allow freshmen to live off campus.

If VT is going to require freshmen live on campus (which I think is a good thing btw) then we are going to have to take steps to make sure those on-campus freshmen accommodations are pretty nice, not extravagant, but nice enough to compete with the options presented by our rivals - whether they be dorms or off-campus apartments.

The bigger issue isn't that one introverted football player wanted an apartment for himself, but that schools like FSU have more flexibility for housing athletes. The Edge apartments in Blacksburg are similar to the place Sweat was (is?) living, but our athletes can't live there until year 2. VT has an overall university requirement to live on campus, to help promote the transition into being a college student and build a sense community. I think it's admirable concept. That doesn't mean the dorms have to be Spartan cinder-block cells though..

I think your last sentence is really all I was getting at. If we're going to maintain the all freshmen on campus (and I don't disagree with it) we need to be able to show a decent dorm to compete with schools that don't. I saw below that it sounds like Cochrane was renovated since I lived there which is good and at least a step in the right direction!

One thing to remember is that you can't have just one dorm renovated that's just for athletes. Pretty sure the athlete only dorms became an NCAA violation (or am I behind the times?)

Yup, you're correct. When I was there, if you put AJ at the bottom of a scale from 1-10 and the "new" dorms (don't know if they finally gave them actual names) at the top, Cochrane was like a 3-4. The only difference (which I understand is big) is that they were suite style with two rooms to a bathroom. Other than that, they were the same jailhouse looking, cinderblock rooms. All I'm saying is that if you can go to FSU and live off campus, we need to be putting athletes in dorms that are more like the "new" dorms.

It's an aspect of recruiting that a lot don't think a lot of. But it can be a really big deal to some and I can understand it.

"...When we step on that field, they bleed like we bleed and we're gonna show the world."
-Corey Marshall

It makes complete sense and I've never really thought about it. You think about locker rooms, practice facilities, weight rooms, etc.....but you don't think about where the athletes live. Are they still in the dorm that is attached to West End? If so, I am sure it needs some renovating.

Cochrane needed to be renovated 5 years ago. I'm pretty sure most athletes are housed in Cochrane and New Hall West (which somehow doesn't have real name after 10 years)

When I attended Tech, Cochrane was known as NUF, New Undergraduate Facility. That is where most of the scholarship athletes were housed. It was years later when it got renamed Cochrane.

Cochrane was renovated...the year after I moved out they got laundry rooms, this sweet common room, an enormous kitchen and a bunch of other work done

I'm from Shelby, NC - home of future-Hokie (hopefully), Dax Hollifield. SHS has another stud LB (a junior this season) named Jaylon Scott. He's a grown ass man out there. Anyway, I went to the Crest HS vs Shelby HS game last night and Jaylon had a VT towel to go along with maroon gloves. I'm assuming he's been to a junior day or an unofficial visit to VT and we haven't offered yet.

I attached his recruiting profile...247 has him 100% to UNC, but I think once he gets more offer's he'll swing in favor of the good guys. I thought it was worth noting, especially considering the non-recruiting subjects that have been brought to this thread (smh).

http://247sports.com/Player/Jaylon-Scott-46043152

Who looked better, him or Dax?

Dax, without a doubt. That's not a knock on Jaylon at all...Dax is just that good.

Thanks for the great insight. Hopefully we get both and they continue their reign of terror in Sacksburg.

Pretty sure I saw Cole at UNC on the sidelines. Recruits were taking a selfie and he looked like he wasn't included

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Big thing is Dax and Cole watched UNC lose.

EDIT: Dax seems unphased. For the life of me I don't understand what kids see in that program because they are getting some serious looks from talent

Keep calm, Gobble on

I was watching this game, I have strong doubts with the 47,000 attendance. It almost felt like the camera guys were avoiding tilting the cameras up to the stands and only focusing on the front row of the student section. When they would pan upwards on a kick/punt you could see HUGE holes in the stadium that were completely empty, same with the UVA game. Lane looked to have an outstanding crowd today.

Pour some Beer on it

Same. What is the appeal - especially now that student athletes have to take classes. Or do they ?!?!?!

Not to pick on you but I hate seeing this argument in general. Kids value different things in a school than us as fans. Maybe he looks at UNC as having produced a decent number of pro's on defense? Likes that its close to home? Wants to play with supposed good friend Payton Wilson? Could be any number of things really.

We hate on them (with good reason) but UNC has a lot of plusses. I think we're pretty lucky UNC went with Fedora over Chris Peterson (supposedly). Fedora is solid but not great.

lol, if they chose fedora over peterson then we can add moronic athletic department to the list of minuses. The dude was a guaranteed home run, but was very picky in where he went

While you are right that it's very hard to know what ultimately makes a recruit choose a school (and it almost certainly isn't any one single factor), the first reason would be an extremely poor one considering they've had 7 different defensive coordinators in the last 10 seasons. It would make as much sense to choose UNC because of current NFL players as it would to choose VT because of Bruce Smith.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

You're 100% right on that one, was just listing possible reasons. Kids like schools for all sorts of weird reasons that don't make sense to me though.

Funny you bring this up! I call it the Al Groh effect. Every year, I used to wish for UVA to, "please do not fire Al Groh." Then it was, "please do not fire Mike London." Next year, we'll all be wishing, "please do not fire Bronco Mendenhall."

In Bud we trust

Solid might even be an overstatement.

Does anyone know how our current commits/targets are doing this season in High school?

Just moved literally 2 blocks from Oscar Smith HS. Anyone I should look out for if I make it to a game?

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

LB Keshon Artis... game this Friday 7pm at Oscar Smith

Smith's left-handed QB is also a VT recruit except as a CB. I expect him to leave that role of QB behind after this season since he is a Jr. His name is Cam'ron Kelly.

You won't be able to miss Artis. He is a stud!

Just saw in 247 that DT Alim McNeill was supposed to announce a commit last Saturday but didn't. He was seen as a heavy NC State lean, so I'm taking this as a good thing. Anyone have any intel? He would be a great pickup, especially with our need at DT.

We can definitely sell early PT.

"Give me a fu¢king beer", Anonymous Genius

Any delay is a good delay

Malcom Delayney?

I'll see myself out.

That's definitely not bad news for us and I have to imagine if NC State stumbles this season Doeren's seat is going to get very toasty. Unfortunately I also found this article from The Detroit News that talks about Michigan going hard after McNeill recently. I feel like we can find skill players to fit in Fuente's system so I think it's crucial to start winning some of these battles for OL and DL recruits.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Part of the reason he pushed it back was because we asked him to decide after his OV here. Respects VT because we were one of his first offers. Actually almost committed last winter before his parents convinced him to hold off.

With that said, NCSU is still the heavy favorite and he maintains it publicly. Would expect him to end up there. But if DD gets canned, all bets are off....

1. I don't think Doeren is getting canned. Debbie Yow is set to retire in 2019, DD is her guy, he's recruiting well. Unless they tank in a huge way - and based on the two games I've seen this year, they probably aren't. He'll be around next year.

2. I think this has more to do with the Sanderson coach encouraging McNeil to look at more "name brand" programs. I get the sense here in Raleigh that NC State is the leader though, and them having Pinnix a commit helps. If McNeil doesn't end up at NC State, I'd be extremely surprised that the reason is he's going to VT. I think it's going to be more like Clemson, Fl State, Michigan, or Alabama.

Wouldn't surprise me if he ended up at a bigger school at all. One thing that I think plays in our favor is that the only two schools that he's consistently talked about surely taking officials to are VT and NC State. I've seen him say he's visiting FSU, Michigan, and UNC in separate interviews but never the same school multiple times. I think he knows VT is his clear second but unsure of what his third choice is at this point.

"Vick's so amazing, that unleashing his skills on some poor defense is almost unsportsmanlike. It's not fair."
- Chris Fowler, ESPN analyst

Very concerned about the McFadden kid as he said a little while back that he was solid but saw a post over on TSL free board that gave a link to his visit to Clemson Vs Auburn game and based on what his interview answers where and the overall post it doesn't look like he is solid anymore and that is based on the kids words and his future plans to visit again later in the season! I will never understand why we have such a hard time getting commits and actually signing them for the OL and DL? Great skill players with no OL or DL and especially OL doesn't bode well for those skill players! Have to control the line of scrimmage period!

Life's short, If you dont do it, somebody else will.

We should recruit OL with the girth of your opening sentence.

And not the girth the size of my peen-peen

While I understand your post, Clemson is his "dream school" and he was offered after he committed to us. Your dream school, in-state school, and defending national champion offers....you probably consider it.

I hope he still picks us, but that is tough to compete with.

I happened to notice that JC Shurburtt predicted McFadden to Clemson this morning. I'm not shocked but things don't seem to be trending in a great direction. I know some fans think we should be pulling in three 4 star lineman every year but I feel like this illustrates how tough the competition is to get OL recruits. We're literally fighting off Clemson for the #91 ranked OT. I have no idea how accurate his rating is and would love to have McFadden but the way some posters act it's like we should barely be considering him a take, much less competing with the defending national champs to sign him.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

How is it that a Crystal Ball guy is able to predict where someone will commit after they commit?

You put those words together, those are my favorite words, Popeyes and bahama
- Mike Burnup

Mostly helps with their accuracy, but not always.

Beat Clemson this year and this becomes less of a problem. I know it's a tall order.

Would be shocked if he ended up at VT. Will visit Clemson soon and would anticipate him flipping here.

"Vick's so amazing, that unleashing his skills on some poor defense is almost unsportsmanlike. It's not fair."
- Chris Fowler, ESPN analyst

If he's already committed to Tech and if I was Fuente, I would give him the ultimatum for his visit to Clemson. Best case we stop him from getting flipped and falling in love, worst he was going to flip anyway and we don't get blindsided down the road.

“I turned down 12 other opportunities. You know what I mean?” - Fuente

The chance of this backfiring is way higher than the potential benefit. Look no further than the Tahj Capehart saga and Charley Wiles' phone call with Jawand Blue for examples.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Seems like it worked (so far) with Gervin

Recruit Prosim

The factors at play there seem to be quite different. Gervin was going to work out for Ohio State in an attempt to get an offer. Was it worth risking the VT offer only for a chance to get an offer from a school that might make your Top 5? If McFadden already has a committable offer to Clemson as reported, there isn't much leverage. Also the ship might have sailed on stopping a guy from falling love with a place he long considered his "dream school."

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

The Ford Raptor is my dream truck, but for now I've decided it isn't the best choice for me. That said, test driving one might just push me over the edge. Luckily, my fiance won't let me. So I'm stuck with my jeep and an extra $40,000 in savings instead

Recruit Prosim

Right, but comparing to McFadden's situation would if you didn't have a vehicle and someone offered you one for free. You can choose the Jeep or the new Ford Raptor.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

That's circumventing the analogy as it is my fiance that is keeping me from getting the raptor, not money.

Recruit Prosim

That is an incredibly bad idea.

This reminds me of the Brady Taylor situation from a few cycles ago. I anticipate a similar ending. I think it's more a matter of "when" rather than "if". It would be in our favor if he went ahead and did it if he's going to - which I think he will. It gives us 5 months to find plan B* instead of a few weeks.

*Let's not kid ourselves... given the current state of our OL recruiting, it's probably like plan YYY

Why not YYZ?

Is It Luck?

Because Neil Peart stands alone

You got that damn right

Is It Luck?

Primus usually does the intro of YYZ and segways it into John the fishermen or Tommy the cat and does it pretty good

Is It Luck?

And this is exactly what I was talking about above. Clemson, literally the team who most say we should aspire to be in recruiting, offers the same guy as us and here we are basically insinuating he was a step above "plan YYY"

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

tbf, it's yyy for them as well. you will never convince me that this is OK.

Apologies for the multiple posts in one day, but since I haven't been around as much recently, I figured that you guys might want to hear my thoughts on some important recruits:

Dax - I think as we get more into football season, the better it is for us. My interpretation is that he forgot how much he actually loves the game of football over the summer and got caught up in the glamour of recruiting. He's maintained since day 1 that his two most important factors are winning and playing time. Out of FSU, SC, UNC and VT, the hokies offer the best combination of the two. Best case for us would be he announces after OV's IMO. Still think he ends up at VT but I would say our chances are 55/45.

KJ - Clemson or Bama. Probably Clemson.

Artis - Wrote about him above. Feel like he's trending away. Won't land both he and Dax.

McNeil - Wrote about him above. NC State is way ahead for now but pushing his decision back is a plus. If Doeren gets fired then we have a very good shot.

Walker - Made up ground here but still probably third at best. Always has loved PSU and is feeling the terps right now. Really wish he had made the trip to FedEx as originally planned. Think he ends up at PSU but look out for OSU as a dark horse. Will say that he loves our depth chart.

Gervin - Who the eff knows. Would be a Hokie right now if it weren't for Bama offering two days before the BBQ. ND has reentered the picture. I wouldn't even venture to guess right now but we have as good a shot as anyone. I wouldn't hold any expectations here.

Beck - Hokie.

Mitchell - Probably will end up a Hokie. Only other place I could see him going is UGA because of his sister.

Feel free to ask about anyone else, but these are really the only uncommitted guys that we're in play with right now.

Any more news about NC St commit Gabriel Gonzalez? Are we getting a visit?

Is Jefferson from St. John's going to get an offer?

Any other OL news?

Yes. Already set a date for the UNC game I believe. Another guy thats indicated nc state's season will have an impact on his destination.

IMO yes, he'll get an offer to play center.

We recently offered Jon Tenuta's kid at OT.

Yoi figured correct. Thanks for all the insight.

Apologies for the multiple posts in one day

Please. You're one of like 3 people who can provide actual information on recruits. And the only one that doesn't tease for it. Appreciate the insight.

If/when Doeren gets the ax, how many of their guys could we make a run at? I know we went after Graves a bit and Ricky Person is a big talent.

I might be out of the loop here, but is OP someone with sauces?

No, Hokie Fireman recently visited with the coaches but only as a fan.

If you're referring to just this comment, yes LAHokie is a Sage Sauceror.

Yes referring to LAHokie.

Does having a 247 membership count as having sauces?

Hahah I do admittedly have a 247 account, but I know a lot of the same people that those guys know around the program. I get my info from those connections and then expand on it and interpret from the different interviews and things that they provide. The difference is they actually talk to recruits and I don't.

"Vick's so amazing, that unleashing his skills on some poor defense is almost unsportsmanlike. It's not fair."
- Chris Fowler, ESPN analyst

I think Person stays regardless. Graves wants to be a Hokie but his parents want him to stay true to his original commitment. Gonzales would probably jump ship. Eason if he realizes OL is where his future is. Pennix would have had a spot prior to Steward.

If we beat Clemson, do you think that'll give us a much better shot at KJ Henry and maybe locking up some of the 50/50 guys? I'm getting the feeling that winning that game could lead to a huge recruiting breakthrough for us and we could land some big targets, but I really have no clue about this stuff to be honest I just have that gut feeling.

Zero insider knowledge but from past experience a single game does not seem to make a significant enough difference to affect recruit's decisions.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Probably wouldn't hurt if we lost (unless we lost big), but would help if we won.

If only winning recruits was the same as the football imperialism map. We beat Clemson we get all the Clemson 'cruits!

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck, don't ever come on my show and talk about your football." - Colin Cowherd

It will as long as we don't follow it up by laying 2 eggs in the following weeks.

I think our only shot at KJ is if Clemson and Bama fill up first. Even then I think he'd big time us and head to UGA. Would definitely help with guys like Dax and Gervin.

Where it would help us the most is in '19 and beyond. We were really making huge perception changes in VA until the Cape situation. The one thing that can truly reverse that is to beat big time teams. Luckily Fu seems to have the big game gene.

LAhokie, what is the perception most 4 and 5 star recruits seem to have of Va Tech especially the instate kids?

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

Mostly that VT isn't big time enough for them. Comparatively kids in VA don't have a ton of state pride so we're already at a disadvantage compared to most schools.

A little confused about this offer. If he's actually a LB, why are we offering? I thought our only spot left was for Artis or Dax? His video linked looks like he lines up at DE a lot, so if he's a DE target I thought our only open spot was for KJ?

I don't know all the specifics around commitable v. non-commitable offers, but is this guy a back-up plan, or an actual target? I don't mean to be disrespectful to him, but it seemed like we were saying it's Artis/Dax/Henry or bust at those positions.

I get the feeling the coaches are not sold on DL depth across the board and will be looking to improve the options at those positions.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Big time names, both old and new, will be in town for Blacksburg. Basically every big prospect ( KJ Dax maybe Sheed) we're still going after in '18 minus one or two. Ford, Smiley, and maybe savion jackson and Jordan Houston, among others) will be there repping the '19 kids.

I have no idea what I am talking but about, but I believe your friend needs to get mean and show some nasty. Most of the plays in the first Hudl video just seem to show him in pass blocking getting in the way of a lineman who doesn't want to try to run around him. He needs to piledrive some people into the dirt, make indentured pancakes of their bodies which will serve as fertilizer for future forests. Also, he needs some footage of what he can do on run blocking. Look at Wyatt Teller highlights for ideas. I wish him luck. Get in shape. See Tim Settle history for further ideas. Work on his footwork and mobility. You're a good friend to him.

Play ball!

Came here to mention footwork. Gotta get them feet chopping through guys in some run blocking highlights! Good frame though, keep workin!!

Alim McNeil is dropping big news today

hmmm...hopefully it's an updated top group and not a commitment. I don't think he has visited us yet this year and NC State hasn't totally crapped the bed yet...he's maybe my top recruit on the board.

The similarities of this upcoming game against Clemson and the 2005 Miami game are uncanny...

1) Ranked matchup
2) Gameday there
3) Night game in Lane stadium (and most anticipated game in Lane for a long time at the time of each game)
4) Big time recruits all in attendance

Lets just hope the score isn't similar lol

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

A lot of people thought we'd win that game. We are the clear underdogs in this one.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

That is true.... I don't think anybody will favorite us/pick us to win..... Vegas line is at VT + 7.5

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

What's the difference if it's VT +7.5 vs Clemson -7.5? I don't understand the convention at all.

I've always thought it can be used to indicate the home team but I guess if you are just betting with the team name you could use it as well. So it would be Clemson @ VT (+7.5) but nothing really changes if you say Clemson (-7.5) @ VT

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

you are correct, usually/most often indicates home team.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Ok, so does VT +7.5 mean that VT is the home team and they are favored to win by 7.5 points?

+ means that Vegas thinks VT needs 7.5 points to tie Clemson.

Negative points next to the team name means you are favored by that many points.

"Facyson is a baller."
-CFB

If you bet VT +7.5, it means that you add 7.5 to VT's score and if that makes them win, you win your bet.

If you bet Clemson -7.5, you subtract 7.5 from Clemson's score and if that makes them win, you win your bet.

Same odds/spread.

So, for instance, last weekend, I put money on Syracuse +23.5 against LSU. That meant that as long as Syracuse lost by less than 23.5 points, I won my bet. In other years, LSU would have killed Syracuse, but as it was SU kept it within 9 and I got my money.

I'm not touching Tech/Clemson one way or the other. A key injury could make this a Clemson blowout and we could just as easily humble them. I'm gonna just watch the game as a fan with no betting interest. However, Georgia -7, was too tempting to pass up. Tennessee is hot garbage and UGa is gonna roll them.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

No difference at all, the official line is just based on the home team

Usually on the newspaper/tv/any medium, they will display whoever the home team is. So if Clemson was home, it would read Clemson - 7.5 instead.

Both mean the same really. Place a bet with VT, you win if they win or lose by less than 7.5 points (or you can say 7 or less). Place a bet with Clemson, you only win if they win by more than 7.5 points (or you can just say 8 or more).

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

We got a 2019 WR commit!

With or without these 247 kids from VA with rankings in the 90 and above range we will go on to beast and win our fair share of games. They can continue to build up other states teams where those states make their kids a priority first and those kids have state pride. The coaches are finding plenty of talent hidden under the rocks. Hopefully between last season, this season, and the next several there will be a change of heart. I am happy we got a 2019 recruit today, I hope he sticks to his word.
