Buzzketball: Devin Johnson promoted to Assistant Coach

Been with Buzz since back in his days at the University of New Orleans and has served in a variety of roles. Not the splash hire, but Buzz going with his guy it looks like.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

So I mentioned this before in the b-ball thread we wouldn't be surprised. Through a friend I found out for the most part buzz was planning on basically moving everyone up and breaking up the responsibilites among staff members and bringing on more junior coaches to take the non coaching positions left behind from those that were promoted.

First reading the headline I thought I read Devin Wilson, was shocked!

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

For a second I thought Buzz hired a genetic hybrid of Devin Wilson and Will Johnston. That was grown in a lab on campus.

After a "national search"? /s

There may have been a cursory National search but this close to the beginning of school you're not going to be able to pry anybody away who's worth anything.

The Weaver Special is acceptable in this instance.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Yeah, I was absolutely making a joke.

I will try to keep an open mind to this promotion as its a great story, my major concern here is his lack of recruiting experience. While I didn't expect to see Buzz hire away a top assistant with how close we are now to the school year, I did at least anticipate him being able to bring in a lower level assistant with some recruiting background, preferably one with a decent AAU rolodex. I frankly do not see that right now in Johnson. He may develop it over time but now that means half the staff is "developing" their recruiting acumen and leaves the heavy lifting to Buzz and McNeilly which isn't ideal.

Who took Reynolds' position?

Odd that the two grayest and most tenured assistants opted to jump ship for equal or lesser jobs, after this program had arguably hit it's all time high in reaching back to back NCAA tournaments.

Lyle Wolf per the announcement today took Reynolds position. Reynolds didn't jump ship to an equal or lesser job. He went from being Director of Operations (non-coaching) to an assistant coach at Texas A&M. When Isaac Chew left Buzz two years ago, he got an $85,000.00 raise and was moving from a coaching spot to a coaching spot. Its likely Reynolds got at least that much of a bump but potentially more.

As has been detailed in other posts now, Roccaforte and Buzz got into a huge fight but had been at odds for a while and so Roccaforte took an opportunity to stick it to Buzz by leaving essentially after the major hiring window was over. If he had left earlier, my understanding is that Reynolds would have been moved to the coaching staff and likely would not have left for A&M.

Having slim pickings Buzz has promoted from within twice now, with Johnson moving to assistant coach and Wolf moving to Director of Operations. While I was hoping for a bit more experience at least in the coaching slot, I do believe that Wolf will do an amazing job in the Ops slot.

Wow, if that is true I hope Roccaforte never gets another P5 job. Completely unprofessional.

I don't understand why Whit/Buzz wouldn't have fired roc to protect the program and allow time to hire somebody else?

My understanding was that the situation came more to a head for Roccaforte than for Buzz. Buzz was going to work through it at least for this season. Roc decided he had had enough and there was a D1 job open to him so he took it.
