AMA: Bill Roth

ESPN and CBS broadcaster, Virginia Tech faculty member, and Voice of the Hokies is here to answer your questions today at noon, TKP. Leave them in advance.

Hey Gang! I'm looking forward to visiting with you right here on TKP today at noon. It should be a lot of fun and even if it's not, it's only an hour right? I mean, how bad can one-hour be?

We all sat through the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl, and that game took at least 4 hours. Maybe it was 5. That was the night where the Hokies rushed the ball 32 times for a grand total of one yard. (To make that statistic sound better on the broadcast, I mentioned that we actually rushed for three feet. Impressive, eh?) For those who don't recall, Tech had one-yard rushing, five fumbles, committed 14 penalties ... and won in overtime. God Bless Rutgers.

I promise this AMA will be better than the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl. While that may be somewhat of a low bar, with your help, we can do it.

Hopefully, we can talk about our new Sports Media & Analytics Program at Virginia Tech. This semester, we have over 100 students taking these classes, and in the Spring 2018, that number will hit 120. I think these kids are learning a lot about sports media, journalism and broadcasting. I know they're teaching me about a lot of cool stuff too ... like why Avocado Toast is great, and insightful millennial phrases like "Deuce" and "Sipping Tea."

You can learn more about what we're doing in our classrooms and studios at Tech, and how I'm spending my weekends broadcasting games, on my new on-line home, www.RothReportOnline.com. Please take a look.

So now, the ball is on the tee. Let's get this AMA started. And together, we can beat Rutgers again!

The bar is set soooo lowww. That game made you want to gauge your eyes out just so ya wouldn't have to watch it. This will be much better.
So do you or any of your students have a helping hand in the broadcasts that we hear these days?

"I'm a Miller Lite guy, always have been, since I was 8." -John Daly

Hi there and thanks for your great question to start us off today. One of the wonderful things we can offer students at Tech right now is the opportunity to get involved in-front of, or behind the cameras. There are dozens of students working in Hokievision and some of them produce things you see on the video boards at Lane and Cassell.

And Tech students are calling games too on the ACC Network Extra package. Tech softball, wrestling, soccer, volleyball, etc.

We have great opportunities for young people who wants to get involved in this awesome field. That's one of exciting things about our new Sports Media & Analytics program here at Tech now. #RecruitingPitch

Bill thanks for agreeing to do this. Now to get the important questions out of the way Early. Every person on TKP has to answer a simply question or two. Do you prefer cake or pie? Do you prefer Moe's over Chipotle?

Now to the less important question. Can the Hokie Club reach the membership it needs to make Tech competitive every year in multiple sports, but especially football where we fall far behind our peers in funding and Support?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

I was tipped-off that this question was coming, so I'm going Kobayashi Maru on you and changing the rules.

My Aunt Clara made this amazing Hungarian Apple Cake. Aunt Clara was from Budapest, so this was a legit recipe not some knockoff. Her Hungarian Apple Cake, cut in little diamonds, sprinkled with powdered sugar, wasn't really cake though. The crust was like pie. The filling was like pie, but it also had sour cream and lots of butter. (NOTE: You can make any dish "Hungarian" by throwing in a stick of butter and top if off with Paprika.) So, I'm goin' with Aunt Clara.

Moe's

And your question is spot-on. Every school is working harder than ever to increase giving from its donor base, including Tech. It's vital for the future of Tech's program. Tech has awesome people in place who are working really hard to ensure the program hits its goals.

HE SAID MOE'S

Bill, not sure if you realize this or not, but you just made Fireman's year saying you prefer Moe's. He will hold that over the Chipolte crowd until the end of time.

Bill, thanks so much for doing this. There aren't many folks on campus that have had the privileged of seeing the ins and outs of Tech's last quarter century the way you did.

So my question for you is out of all your years broadcasting Hokie games, which away venues were your favorite in terms of gameday atmosphere and as well as accommodations for your crew? Least favorites?

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

I have to agree re. LSU. My son graduated from there and I attended a home game there in Death Valley in 2014 and it was a tremendous gameday experience. The people I sat with in the stadium, who were very accommodating when they heard my son was a student (teaching me all of the cheers/etc), were particularly so when I mentioned I was a VT grad and remembered the 2007 debacle. They basically said their goal was to show all visitors a great time, but once the ball is kicked off things get serious and you become "tiger bait" ha ha. Very common for multiple generations to attend/graduate LSU. The place isn't much to look at but the people are super-nice and all 100,000+ of them really love their school.

If you could pick any hokie (coach or player, past or present, dead or alive) to call a game with you, who would it be? And no, you can't say Mike Burnop.

Also, what has been your favorite win over LOLUVa?

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

That's a neat question.

Hmmm. Surprise Answer: Chuck Noe.
Chuck was head coach at VT, as well as UVA and South Carolina and VCU, but he was the guy who helped design Cassell. I visited with Coach Noe at his house in the Fan in Richmond and he showed me how he insisted the place have steep sidelines to create a great homeport advantage. He was right! He got into broadcasting and ended up hosting a Sunday night radio show in Richmond, plus coaches' shows with Terry Holland and George Welsh at UVA. He was a funny guy. Great personality. He was Dickie V before Dickie V!

Favorite win over UVA? Hmm There've been so many, it's hard to keep track! 1995 at C'Ville is the pick.

Bill- I listened to that 95 call from a transistor AM radio in a camper with my dad over in Craig County after being blown out of the woods by the nasty weather. It is a memory that will live with me forever. Thank you for the terrific call.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

For those that either weren't around in 95 or need something to get them pumped up on a Thursday morning...

I guess I'm too late to ask this, but I always wondered if Roth had "Jim Druckenmiller just ENGINEERED the best comeback I've ever seen!" in his backpocket for a while or if that was impromptu.

When he yells "TOUCHDOWN TECH" it just sends chills.

It's pretty awesome to hear all of the people cheering in the press box behind him too.

Dammit, that would have been my question!

My son & I re-lived the game-winning "Druckenmiller fake" pass from that 1995 game many times in the backyard with the ol' Nerf football.

The week before the game, my wife and I met with her ob/gyn to discuss the upcoming birth of our daughter. The issue of inducing came up and as I was ignored, the suggestion was made that they induce the following Friday if the birth hadn't occurred by then. I perked up and interjected, 'But, but, the Tech-UVa game is on Saturday'. Cue dismissive rolling eyes.
My daughter was born Friday, Nov 17, '95. Still at the hospital on Saturday, the friends and family came by to visit early in the day, at my suggestion because, wink, wink, my wife would be tired and needed her rest. I rushed everyone out around 11:30 am and we went into my wife's room where she proceeded to go to sleep. Thankfully, there was a TV in the room and I was able watch the game while she got her rest.
It wasn't looking good for the good guys until that Druckenmiller pump fake and Holmes catch. I was trying to be quiet but it was impossible. My wife rolled over and glared at me with a look that could make any man shrivel up. All I could do was grin and say, not too quietly, 'I'm sorry honey, but we're going to win'!
My All-Time Favorite Tech Story!

You've been inside and outside of the program.....
Can you critique what VT and the Hokie nation needs to address in the next 5 years to continue to compete and hopefully improve in today's world of college athletics?
In what are we doing well, and in what are we failing?

(Love us some Bill Roth! Thanks for your work.)

Thanks. Tech has a great AD, amazing coaches and and what appears to be elite fund raisers and administrators in place. So you should be very happy on that front.

Increasing revenues through ticket sales, fund raising, sponsorships and ACC Network are vital.

That's not breaking news, but more and more the focus will be on the $$.

Your Almighty Graciousness, Mr. Bill Roth Sir, I am a Junior in High School in Central PA. I am looking into schools with good Radio Broadcasting programs and majors. I took a visit last spring and learned that the Media Comm major most students go through is not very Radio specific. Is there any chance in the next couple years that VT is expanding their Radio program and in specific, Sports Radio. I also took a visit to Indiana University of Pa and they have an extended Radio specific major and a Radio Station that I would be able to broadcast on exclusively basically whenever I would like and I am not sure it would be worth it to go to my dream school (VT) when they don't have a Radio Exclusive Major, and not an a lot of Radio specific classes especially when the out of state cost is around 40k a year
Also will this new Sports Journalism program be more Radio Specific?
sorry I kind of rambled on a bit there

I'd suggest two things:
1- Pick a college that will give you a great education in all areas. You'll be a much better sports talk host if your depth of knowledge includes history, politics, culture, journalism, as well as multi-media journalism and many other subjects. Go somewhere you can develop and grow in all areas.
2- Send me an email (billroth@vt.edu) and we can discuss more including financial aid, and I can tell you what were doing at Tech. We're building something special here. And did I mention the food? :)

I find myself wanting to go back to college just so I can take classes from Bill Roth.

Legs for the good food reference!

No questions. I just want to sincerely thank you for all you've done for Hokie Nation. Laaser is doing a great job, but he will never hold a candle to you in the booth.

Do you remember me?

In all seriousness, Hokie Nation misses you on the radio broadcasts (see my signature below). You brought heart and soul into every broadcast. You and Mikey made a great team.

What do you miss most about being the voice of the Hokies?

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

You are out of whack!

As someone that studied Aero at Tech and is now working in sports analytics I'm excited to hear the school is adding sports-related majors. How's the analytics part going to fit in with the rest of the program?

Rip his freaking head off!

The analytics we're focusing on right now are more Neilsen ratings, television numbers, etc, and how they relate to sports programming decisions. (Who plays where and when? What teams, sports, leagues do well in certain markets. Why specific sponsors align with certain teams/networks.)

I'm interested to hear more about what you're doing too. Shoot me an e-mail. I want to get VT alums who are in this business engaged with our kids here.

What's your email? I'd love to work with some VT kids interested in this line of work.

Bill, thank you for doing this - your voice is part of many iconic Hokie memories for me.

I would like to ask - what is the most exciting moment in VT football that you've called live over the air?

Thanks Guitar man. And thanks for all these questions. Y'all are great.

Most exciting? Druck to Holmes, '95 UVA. Brandon Manning's blocked punt vs. Miami in '01. And DeAngelo's strip of Roscoe Parrish in '04.

*2003 was the strip return for TD. Keeping you honest, Bill ;)

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

That '95 pass was one of my most memorable moments of Hokiedom. I was there, on the 50 with a bunch of UVA lawyers. Their reaction was priceless. Set up the Sugar Bowl and totally destroyed the after game party I went to with many of those lawyers/fans. I was so hoarse I couldn't gloat much, but my beatific smile said it all. Thanks for the reminder, and. like most if not all of us here, I miss you, man!

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Bill I have so many great childhood memories associated with your voice. My dad and I always muted the TV to listen to the radio call even if it was out of sync.

On to the question; If the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl was the ugliest Tech win you ever called then what was the second ugliest and why?

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

What's the most almost arrested you've ever been?

Chem PhD '16

Whadya mean by 'almost?'

The situation where you felt like you definitely deserved it but then didn't.

Edit: I'm not asking you to dish on having been arrested. I've just found that people's close calls often make for great stories.

Thank you for doing this Mr. Roth and thank you for your service to Virginia Tech.

Hi Bill...thanks for doing this!
Did you notice any difference working in a big city like LA, as far as fan support, gameday traditions, stadium atmosphere, than in a small, rural town like Blacksburg? Or were UCLA fans pretty much the same as VT fans?
Also, and hopefully this isn't too controversial of a question...but you don't seriously think krispy kreme is better than Dunkin Donuts, do you?

Hi Bill! Thanks for doing this AMA.

My question: What is your interest level in commentating on live Virginia Tech sporting events in the future?

Dear Bill:
Do you think Coach Fuentos would be interested in the Florida coaching job? Would hate to lose him. Will A.

totally kidding.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

We all miss you, Bill. Thanks for all that you've done for Virginia Tech!

I read your Roth Report the other day and you had an intriguing take on the need to upgrade Cassell Colliseum to a mulit-purpose convention center to really get a steady revenue stream flowing besides just ticket sales and signage. I would love to see this happen down the road. I would hate to see Cassell lose it's character, but I think it may become necessary to meet the university's financial targets with the upside this would offer.

With that being said, my question is this: With recent upgrades (completed or proposed) to the football, track, soccer, and baseball facilities, what do you think (bedsides Cassell) would need to be the next big step? Also, do you ever see Lane Stadium undergoing another expansion?

Thank you!

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

I know we've all benefited from your talents in the booth over the years, but have you ever considered covering Tech sports pro bono for a growing online VT sports community? If not pro bono, would you take payment in made up internet turkey legs?

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

We all know bad officiating happens for and against (looking at you personal foul call vs Miami).

What's the most egregious call to go against VT? Josh Hyman offensive pass interference against USC comes to mind! Any inside scoop on what coaches really want to say about officiating?

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

For all you young Hokies...that's high quality TV right there!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

That was a bad call in the USC game for sure. Honestly, the official get most of 'em right. They do a great job and just about every coach I've been around has great respect for the work the officials do. Theres a tremendous amount of respect for the officials actually.

You can tell you spend a lot of time with the coaches. LOL.

What's your overall opinion of how Virginia Tech is changing? The university is growing rapidly - in academics (see new Med school, Sports Media and Analytics, etc), size of student body, and physical size of campus. How do you feel about our rapid expansion? How do you foresee it affecting the town of Blacksburg? What (if any) growing pains do you think we'll encounter on our path to world domination?

Twitter me

Now that you've been back in Blacksburg for a little while, any plans to get back in the booth for a game or two? I think I can speak for most, if not all of us when I say the dream is a Bill Roth announced Hokies game on TV for us, be it broadcast or streamed. (which I believe happened for us at least once during a snow-out in basketball, which I remember being an excellent experience for those watching)

Oh, and to throw a bit of a curveball, what's your favorite non-football broadcasting moment for the Hokies?

Hey, Skutt. A coworker took his kid to visit tech yesterday and apparently you were his tour guide (or some other guy named Henry who was from Blacksburg and wants to do sports journalism). Said you did a great job. So, yeah, good job.

Bill, what's your take on the slowwwly developing ACC Network? Has our conference missed the boat on these cable sports channels and their $$ carriage fees, or are we well positioned to lead the way into the Streaming TV marketplace?

Also, have you ever considered doing play by play for a broadcast network like ESPN, CBS, Fox, etc?

We're all counting on the ACC Network to be a success. The schools. The league. ESPN. The landscape is changing week-by-week (this was something we covered in class last week actually). Cord-cutting, OTT services, how the Disney BamTech acquisition will change not just Netflix, but how a new ESPN App will change how we all get our games.

And I'm really enjoying working these TV games. Next Friday I've got two games on CBS Sports Network (Tulane vs. Colorado State & Florida State vs. Fordham) from Jamaica. My next ESPN football game is November 25th. Site TBA.

With that out of the way, with the brief time that you called UCLA basketball games, and in turn seen the innards of a true blue blood basketball program, what areas of improvement would you say Tech needs to make in their basketball program, to truly take it to the next level? And do you see any signs of that already taking place under Whit and Buzz?

"...I'm getting a little tired of hearing how good everybody else is..." -Coach Fu [This week: 1-0]

Best Frank Beamer Story?

We were flying to Richmond for a Hokie Club dinner and the seats on the school plane, which face each other, can get really tight.

So if you can picture this, I was sitting across from Jim Weaver and because of the configuration we're all jammed-in there with our legs bunched together.

Next to me, Coach Beamer was sitting across from his lovely wife Cheryl who was wearing a beautiful white outfit for the event. Cheryl always looks stunning, but for this big event (1200+ people) she was dazzling. She looked every bit the First Lady of VT Football that night. Cheryl was also drinking a diet Coke out of a cup.

At some point during the flight, Coach decided to cross his legs and accidently kicked the soda all over Cheryl and her dress.

"FRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANK!!" she yelled.

I looked at Jim and we mouthed to each other "Holy S*&$."

Frank jumped into super hero/super husband mode. He scrambled to get towels. He was doing anything he could to salvage the situation.

He might have been college football's winningest coach, but at that very moment, he was in a world of trouble.

Frank started cleaning up everything and drying Cheryl off with napkins.

"Honey, you can't even tell it's wet," he told Cheryl.

At that point, Jim and I were biting our lips to keep from bursting-out laughing because, in all honesty, it looked like Cheryl had been hosed-down by coke machine.

But by the time we landed in Richmond, Frank had it all cleaned-up and Cheryl looked as stunning and dazzling as always.

For those 25-minutes you could see how much Frank and Cheryl love each other and what kind of amazing, loving husband Frank is. That was a real crisis, and Jim and I got front row seats to see how Frank handled it. When you hear stories about how genuine and caring Frank Beamer was to his players and his staff, they're true.

But always remember this:: Frank Beamer's best-ever recruit was Cheryl Oakley from Highland Springs, Virginia.

holy crap. I just read that with your voice in my head. You should totally do audiobooks.

I know that might sound surprising, but I like Al a lot. He's smart and he knows a ton about football. Al was an NFL Coach, and do you know how hard it is to be a head coach at that level? And in NYC with the Jets?

Trust me: If you had a few beers with Al, you'd say the same thing. Good guy.

Great guy! One of the best coaches VT has ever had...

This needs to go plaid.

Did you know Groh used to be a cop?

Oh, wait, that doesn't sound right.

Bill I'm intrigued by these millennial phrases you speak of. Give me a top 3 that you've learned from students so far.

Hi Bill, Communications graduate here from VT, class of '07. I have always admired your work from the broadcast booth, thanks for the years of many great calls.

What sports announcers did you look up to when you were younger? Did you have any mentors and what did they teach you?

Also, rumor has it we are members of the same "social club" on campus... In Hoc Signo Vinces

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Bill

I see you from time to time downtown, never introduced myself 'cause I don't want to bug you, but always been a big fan of yours. Always had the TV on mute and listened to your play by play, even if there was a delay.

My question(s)....what was the first football game that you called with Mike Burnop and what was it like working with him that first day, and also, what game to you think you and Mike called the best as a team?

When you call a game, is there anything you struggle with? Is there a phrase or particular word that consistently throws you off? Do you have any exercises that you do to train?
For instance, I can't type words that end in "in". They always end up "ing". Obviously, it's not spoken word, but it's a similar issue.

Being a Syracuse alum, did you ever have any anxiety calling a VT/Syracuse matchup? Or did you look forward to those?

Don't get suckered into the pie vs. cake debate. Milkshakes are the universal dessert.

Followup: do you cringe as much as we do when national commentators mispronounce our players' names?

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Ha, exactly. Easiest way to lose credibility as an announcer or journalist on any platform? Mis-prounounce a name.

Hello Senator Blutarsky,

What a neat question.

I'm ok with words, but some names get me. For example, when Michael Tauiliili and Ayanga Okpokowuruk played for Duke, I was always hoping they would not make the tackle. But they were really good players. So I'd say ... "and the tackle was made by .... the linebacker."

Just kiddin' of course.

Thanks for all the questions. Sorry I can't get to them all. 1 p.m. class time!

I appreciate all the nice words and comments. On behalf of my Aunt Clara and her amazing apple cake/pie thanks for your questions!

This was way better than the Russell Athletic Bowl!

Geeze Bill, work doesn't stop most people here from continuing to post and peruse

But seriously, thanks for all that! The Beamer story was especially good.

Hey Bill,

When you and Mike were calling a game, how often did you depend on the stats from dsalas and how often did y'all make it up on the fly?

I swear to drunk, I'm not God

Between Damian and Carter, we always had great stats. Every game, every play!

Bill, as a lot of people have already said, thanks for being the voice of the Hokies and for providing the soundtrack to so many Saturdays watching games with my folks. I may or may not have cried when you left for UCLA.

Which did you enjoy calling more during your time, Football or Basketball games?

Which VT non-QB was the most fun to watch/call games for?

From your days at UCLA, what's the one thing that UCLA does that could benefit VT?

In Bud we trust

Bill,

Thanks for doing this. I have 2 questions:

1) When you watch a VT game do you mute the TV and call it yourself?

2) Have you met Hank? Is he as likable as he looks in the pictures or is he just putting on a show for the camera?

It says you just joined TPK 4 days ago, my question is did you know about us during your time as a broadcaster?

He said give to me Roscoe

What are some of your pet peeves when you watch a broadcast, or when you were broadcasting?

How is your relationship with Jon Laaser? Do you offer him any advice, does he ever reach out to you or just stay out of the way?

Hi, Bill. I'm wondering if you might have any insight on why "Enter Sandman" is sometimes covered up on TV when the entrance is otherwise being fully shown. The two cases where that happened this year were the UNC (ESPN2) and Duke (Raycom) games. Meanwhile, the intro was fully heard for WVU and Clemson, both ABC primetime games.

Is it simply a rights issue, where ESPN is willing to pay the money for the big games, but not for the games buried on ESPN2 in the afternoon? Or is it just a function of how those "smaller" broadcasts are produced?
