Photo Gallery: Buzzketball Home Opener(s)

A behind-the-lens look at the first two home games for Virginia Tech men's basketball; Detroit Mercy (W, 111-79) and The Citadel (W, 132-93).

Hello and welcome to the first of (hopefully many) Buzzketball photo gallery stories that I'll be doing for everyone. I'm combining the first two home games into one post, so these won't be in any particular order today. I've always enjoyed photographing basketball more than football (being inside and not rained on helps), and I'm excited to be back in Cassell again this season to capture year 4 of the Buzz Williams experience.

A lot of newcomers on the court this year, especially this guy:

Nickeil Alexander-Walker looks like someone who really just enjoys playing basketball. He's practically smiling in the majority of my photos, even while subtly and quickly avoiding defenders:

Other trends that I see popping up over and over over the years, Justin Robinson looking absolutely and totally calm as he moves with the ball:

And a more recent trend, something that I've picked up on is a big increase in no-look passing. I don't think my basketball eye is expert level by any means, but I feel like I've managed to make a few more photos of this play than I remember seeing in the past and I don't think it's because I just plain missed them before:

The first two games were somewhat of a blowout each time, which starts to get kind of boring for me, photographically. There's less tension present and less pressure to not miss The Next Big Play, so this is about the time that I start to shoot more with the wide lens. Almost all of my favorite basketball photos (as in ones made by other photographers) are wide shots; I think they tell a better story:

Finally, on somewhat of a tangent, one of my favorite recurring photos is The Hair Photo. The High Techs always produce something new every time they go out onto the court and the hair flying around always makes for a fun and slightly pseudorandom number generator photo experience.
