Virginia Tech Football Recruiting: Chatman Chooses Hokies

A 757 standout opts for the Hokies.

The fourteenth member of Virginia Tech's 2018 recruiting class is its first representative from the Commonwealth. Armani Chatman made a late night pledge to the Hokies on Friday.

"I really like the change that's going on at Tech right now. I like what's going on there," Chatman told Ultimate Recruit in October 2016.

The versatile 6-0, 180 pound 757 athlete provides Tech an option on either side of the ball — defensive back or wide receiver. Chatman committed to Tech over Maryland, Central Florida, N.C. State, Rutgers, and Auburn among other offers. The 247Sports Composite ranks him as a 3-star product. Rivals rates him with a loftier 4-star grade, the 163rd prospect in the nation. Regardless of what the recruiting services conclude, Tech had the opportunity to evaluate Chatman in person during a satellite camp on June 13 at Hampton University and his decision had the Hokies giddy.

Chatman earned first-team All-Tidewater recognition last season as a defensive back for Bayside HS.

Intercepted four passes, returning two of them for touchdowns, and collected 24 tackles. Also a key playmaker on offense (26 receptions, 352 yards, five TDs) and special teams (two punt-return TDs). "Dominant in all three phases of the game." Bayside coach Jon White.

Chatman announced on Wednesday he would transfer to powerhouse Bishop Sullivan CHS for his senior campaign.

Michael Clark of Scout noted Chatman's performance at the recent Washington, D.C. Under Armour Camp.

Armani Chatman has always been a dynamic playmaker, but the Virginia Beach (Va.) Bayside wide receiver has taken his game to a new level in the offseason. He was bigger, stronger and faster than in the fall. Chatman made tough intermediate catches and also beat defenders deep.

ESPN's scouting report lauds what he is capable of producing on the field.

Strengths: Plays fast and precise. Savvy route runner. Can shift gears and create separation. Long arms, adequate height. Can extend and elevate to make plays on throws outside of his catch radius. Sneaky vertical burst. Areas of Improvement: Hasn't timed great. Better as run and catch guy than after catch. Bottomline: Very productive, reliable player with athleticism and instincts for making plays. Increased speed as a senior will enhance his recruitment.

I'm really liking this recruiting class. Gets better every day!

Welcome aboard, Armani!

If French is to be believed, Fuente really prefers guys who make plays after the catch. The scouting report (while these are sometimes dubious) implies he's more of a possession guy or sort of a Ford-style jump pass catcher. I'm guessing he projects as a corner for us?

Being recruited as an athlete, so he is going to practice on both sides of the ball until they find which is the better fit for him. Personally I'd prefer him as a DB/whip type player. theme thus far.

i'd like to see one more pure cover corner in this class

Gervin and/or Williams would be great to go along with Thompson

My top 3 DBs left, in order, are; Gervin, Nate Thompson, and Brents. Though I wouldn't be surprised if we only have a spot for Gervin after Chatman committed. This seems like a total 180 from last years DB recruiting.

So much for the "but we're ignoring Virginia" mantra about our recruiting...

Excellent get and continues an excellent overall class. I really get the feeling we're about to make a strong push in the ACC the next few years.

Hokie Love!

No Doubt! We are LOADED

Way to lead strong with the TKPclub before posting. Worth a leg of respect for that alone. Welcome home!

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

757 in the house, y'all!

757 in the house, y'all!

Bono reference?

Year 3 is coming up!

Even though he's transferring from Bayside...

Did he have to transfer from Bayside after they drilled for oil on the football field?

But will it re-open the Sullivan channel?

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Wow, 2018 class looks amazing. Fuente and crew are grabbing talent, right and left. Start JUMPIN'

This guy is so Isaiah like. The mix of receiver talent we r getting will drive defenses crazy.

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

Chatman had a clip on the local 757 news about his commitment. He said he was going to play DB for Bud Foster.

Gotta admit I am slightly perturbed his file photo is not him in a suit, that aside welcome aboard

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Where are the BagMen to provide him with the Armani suit?

🦃 🦃 🦃

I submitted my design, but they returned it using the letters from my Hardee's coupons to form both a Cease & Desist AND a Restraining Order.

So does this guy sort of defy the old mantra that if a DB could catch he would be playing WR? I like the idea of a guy who fits well on the defensive side, but has some good hands and ball carrying skills, especially returning the ball against WRs and OL rather than 11 defenders.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Welcome to the Hokie Nation Armani! Can't wait to see you play at Lane! Not a bad drive for your family and friends to see you, too! We'll ALL be cheering loudly! GO HOKIES!
