The fourteenth member of Virginia Tech's 2018 recruiting class is its first representative from the Commonwealth. Armani Chatman made a late night pledge to the Hokies on Friday.
"I really like the change that's going on at Tech right now. I like what's going on there," Chatman told Ultimate Recruit in October 2016.
The versatile 6-0, 180 pound 757 athlete provides Tech an option on either side of the ball — defensive back or wide receiver. Chatman committed to Tech over Maryland, Central Florida, N.C. State, Rutgers, and Auburn among other offers. The 247Sports Composite ranks him as a 3-star product. Rivals rates him with a loftier 4-star grade, the 163rd prospect in the nation. Regardless of what the recruiting services conclude, Tech had the opportunity to evaluate Chatman in person during a satellite camp on June 13 at Hampton University and his decision had the Hokies giddy.
Chatman earned first-team All-Tidewater recognition last season as a defensive back for Bayside HS.
Intercepted four passes, returning two of them for touchdowns, and collected 24 tackles. Also a key playmaker on offense (26 receptions, 352 yards, five TDs) and special teams (two punt-return TDs). "Dominant in all three phases of the game." Bayside coach Jon White.
Chatman announced on Wednesday he would transfer to powerhouse Bishop Sullivan CHS for his senior campaign.
Michael Clark of Scout noted Chatman's performance at the recent Washington, D.C. Under Armour Camp.
Armani Chatman has always been a dynamic playmaker, but the Virginia Beach (Va.) Bayside wide receiver has taken his game to a new level in the offseason. He was bigger, stronger and faster than in the fall. Chatman made tough intermediate catches and also beat defenders deep.
ESPN's scouting report lauds what he is capable of producing on the field.
Strengths: Plays fast and precise. Savvy route runner. Can shift gears and create separation. Long arms, adequate height. Can extend and elevate to make plays on throws outside of his catch radius. Sneaky vertical burst. Areas of Improvement: Hasn't timed great. Better as run and catch guy than after catch. Bottomline: Very productive, reliable player with athleticism and instincts for making plays. Increased speed as a senior will enhance his recruitment.
